Chapter 70

Part Two - Chapter One

Looking Down the Barrel of a Brand New Day - COMPLETED

Tuesday, March 6, 2018

Jack

Insane case over money, guns, drugs, and a multi-million $$ dynasty. Our adversaries have one client (a female heir to the fortune), two lawyers, three eager staffers, and a four-man armed security detail. My two clients (the heiress's husband and son) have me, with Ruth running around backing us up on all things. The heiress is alleging domestic violence.

The last day of the trial starts tomorrow morning, 8 AM.

Their evil legions are powerful and wearing really expensive suits.

Ceci

I hope your guys aren't in too much trouble.

Jack

Ceci

Nice

Jack

Yup. Beer on a Wednesday. Cause after Court today, Wednesday is Friday!

Ceci, you gorgeous thing, justice was served!  The millionaire heiress, her lawyers, and all her security guards with dark sunglasses....we stomped them into the ground!!

I'm having anchovy slices and beer!

Worked last 10 days straight till 1AM, up 4AM. Stopped eating food, except a hard-boiled egg and banana in the morning.

Now on my second slice and second beer.

Ceci

No wonder you're not fat.

Eat!

Jack

Do you shake your fist when you say, "Eat!"

If you wear a babushka and shake your fist, I would have no choice but to eat.

Ceci

✊

That was not the shaking fist icon I was looking for.

Jack

I love babushkas.

May I regale you with the story of our righteous victory?

Ceci

Nice photo.

Jack

No time to regale as we burn up the freeway in Ruth's Mini to get to the Denver DA's office. Meeting at 1 PM where they tell us why they will, or will not, prosecute the cop who, point blank, shot our client to death as he was apparently surrendering after a bank robbery.

Denver DAs Office

On the 8th floor we meet with three senior DAs.

The top DA spoke. She explained that it was a tough decision, that they reviewed all the evidence, talked to all the witnesses, and decided it was a justified homicide. We sat silent and let her continue. She described what they decided happened: Our guy robs the bank, flees, hides behind a dumpster. The officer comes up. Pullshis gun. Tells him to show his hands. Our guy says he can't. Our guy twists, The officer shoots him twice.

Death.

Based on this, the DAs decided it was a justified homicide.

Nowhere in the DA's account did she mention the two witnesses who were 10 feet away from the shooting. The two witnesses who reported to police that the officer said nothing. That he walked up to our guy, who was unarmed and showing his hands. And that he shot him twice point blank.

When I asked about these two witnesses and their reports to police, the DA went blank. She had never seen or heard of them. I told her that they both made written statements to the police, and one was video-taped by police.

None of the DAs in the room had heard or seen any of this.

They asked who these witnesses were. I said we had them, and we had video statements from both of them. I offered to share them. The three DAs looked at each other. For a long time. Silently. They decided they needed to see the videos. They decided they were not going to release their decision to the press to absolve the police, as planned, tomorrow. Thought it might be best to look over the "new evidence."

We thanked them. Got up. Left.

Now, we're eating. Cajun.

Ceci

In meeting.

Jack

Good morning. 5:00 AM on a Saturday. Is this when old people flirt? During the few quiet moments of coffee or tea. The brief freedom before we are strapped into a day of responsibility.

I'm waiting to see if enough snow came in over night to ski or if I'll be going in early to clean up the crime scene in my office, then look for a new car.

My doctor referred me to a masseuse and a therapist. The therapist to deal with my anger at the idiot semi driver who crushed me and fled the scene, and my fear that I might now get hit a third time, since "three's the charm".

P.T.S.D.

F.U.C.K.

Ceci

I woke up with some crazy headache. Had a few sips of red wine last night, that's it. Dehydrated or, I hate to even think this, maybe I'm getting sick.

So, I guess your car was totaled?

Jack

yup. car totaled.

I hope you're not sick.

You know, looking on the slightly brighter side, while acknowledging a more perverse and deranged possibility, maybe you got ruphied.

Looking for a car.

Jack

Best of the first four I've seen...

Ceci

Is that white or silver?

Jack

White. Almost the same as the last one, minus about 100,000 miles.

Ceci

I would get white in a second.

What year?

Jack

2003

Ceci

Wow, it still looks good.

What else you looking at?

Jack

Yeah, the sweet years for Outbacks go up to 2004. And I always buy with cash, no debt.

Ceci

That's smart.

Jack

Thought about a WRX. Had one before in electric blue. But picked up tickets and not humble enough for juries.

Uh Oh. Just saw a sweet one owned by a Bulgarian lady.

Ceci

Looks good too

Jack

Yup. Solid. Reliable. Mature. Yet with that stealthy bad boy edge. Females know, even if it's just subliminal, that a dude driving a car like this is entirely at peace with making babies and sexual reproduction. On that note, it's probably fortuitous that our fates and a car like this did not cross when we were younger. I would have wanted to have like 16 kids. Might have created friction in the relationship.

Last stop. Car not here. Mattress and dumpster in front yard. This will be awesome.

Young fellow rolled up with the car. A total gentlemen and sweetheart (not his house). Car not bad. Here's the best part...

Kicking stereo and 5-speed stick, baby!

Comes with stickers.

hmmmm.

Body not mint enough for clients and court.

So, down to the white one, but the sales dude lied to me on a couple key facts

Or the green one, more mileage, but owned by the Bulgarian lady who's brother is a mechanic.

What do you say?

Ceci

I don't know. Where is the white one being sold from?

Jack

Kind of a sketchy chop shop

Ceci

No.

No to mechanic one too

Jack

K

Keep looking?

Ceci

Yes

Jack

Tomorrow is another day.

Sunday, March 11, 2018

Jack

Sweet one. I think I'm buying.

Ceci

Outback?

Jack

Yup. Blue. 113,000 miles, a baby. Same year as the one I lost, but less mileage and cheaper. Super clean. Kept in a garage.

They put it up for sale last night, but I was first on his door step, 8:11 AM.

Ceci

Looks good.

Jack

Called the dude from his front porch. He had to put his clothes on to show me the car.

What do you say?

Ceci

Does it sound good?

Did you ask what work he's done on it lately?

It looks really nice though.

Jack

All Maintenance on schedule. Timing belt at 88K. Interior is showroom. New tires.

Ceci

Timing belt is done!

Jack

Hell yeah!

Ceci

I'd get it.

Is his house kept up?

Jack

Meticulous. Groomed.

Ceci

👍👍👍

Jack

SOLD!

Ceci

Excellent.

Jack

Thanks!

Ceci

Did you buy it?

Jack

Yes. once I (we) decide, I don't mess around.

Ceci

It is a sharp car. Love that blue.

Jack

Yeah. Hey, you know what just struck me. Not theoretically, or dreamily, or whistfully, but concrete and crisp. There's an actual chance that we might end up together. Sure, there's still a pretty good chance that we won't. But it's more than a nice thought. It's sort of like when Einstein's musings about gravity and light went from poetry to experimentally verified fact, only mushier.

Right?

Ceci

I wouldn't rule it out.
