Chapter Nine: Vega’s Desperate Plan
Her Shifter Bodyguard (Shifter World Novella - Book One) (SERIES OF 13 SHORT STORIES)
Johnny Vega studied the man before him. He has heard stories about his kind but has never met one in person. The man didnât seem too scary. The stranger smirked at him as if he could read his thoughts. Hmm, maybe he could. Johnny doesnât know much about them, just what he has read online.
âDonât believe everything you read online,â the man said, his eyes following Johnny around the room.
Johnny nodded, âindeed. So, can you do it?â
âI can,â the man said with a nod. âFor a price.â
âOf course.â Johnny snapped his fingers.
One of his men set a case on the desk, and Johnny opened it.
The man smiled at the amount.
âHalf now and the other half after sheâs mine,â Johnny said, snapping the lid closed.
The man nodded, âof course.â
âDo you understand what I want?â
âYes, but Iâm curious as to why. I meanâif she doesnât want youâ¦.â
Johnny grinned, âshe does. Sheâs just stubborn. We were good together for over three years. Thenâshe just left. No words as to why. I sent men after her, but my men never came back. From what Iâve heard, sheâs been hanging around shifters.â
âShifters, huh?â the man asked, eyeing Johnny. âWhat is a human doing around shifters?â
âI donât knowâI guess she hired them to protect her.â
âFrom what?â
âNo clue. But Iâve had fuck all luck in getting close to her. I was hoping your kind of persuasion would work to bring her homeâaway from the shifters.â
Tate Umber studied the man before him. Heâs not someone he usually does business with, but he owed a friend a favor. And a friend of his owes this man a favor, so here he is, like an expensive love potion for him and his lost girlfriend.
Easy enough job.
But then Vega had to mention shifters. Tate knows plenty of shifters; hell, heâs friends with an entire shifter clan. So, he knows it will be hard to get the woman alone. He should try her work.
He looked at the piece of paper and picture the rich son of a bitch had given him and whistled. Sheâs good-looking, alright. No wonder he didnât want to let her go.
âIâll try to get to her tomorrow,â he told the man.
Johnny nodded. âGoodâhereâs the first payment,â he said, handing Tate the case of money.
âGood.â Tate nodded to the room and left.
Tonight, heâll plan his moves. Then tomorrow, he will bring Johnny Vega, his girlfriendâSharissa Flemmings.
~ð±~
âShar, the boss wants to see you.â
Sharissa looked up at a coworker, nodded, and turned to Dustin, who sat beside her at her desk. He nodded, and they stood together, then headed to her bossâs office.
When Sharissa got to work that morning, she introduced Dustin to her boss as her bodyguard. She doubted Mr. Trinkle would have allowed Dustin to stay if sheâd said, âHey, meet my mate.â She knew her boss had noticed Dustin last week and needed to explain why she had a shifter following her around. So she told her boss about the break-in and the threats to her life. Mr. Trinkle had agreed to let Dustin stay with her during work hours. Shar had a feeling that Dustin would have found a way to stay at her side if Mr. Trinkle had said no.
âSir?â Shar asked as she entered the manâs office.
âSharissa,â Mr. Trinkle said with a smile as he got to his feet. âI want you to meet your new partner, Lyvia Yule.â
Shar turned and smiled at the lovely girl sitting in an office chair. Lyvia smiled up at her, and Shar noticed her silver eyes.
âSo nice to meet you,â Lyvia said as she stood and held her hand out to Shar.
âYou too,â Shar said with a smile as she shook the other womanâs hand.
Lyvia sucked in a shocked breath when she saw Sharâs wrist.
âYou okay, Miss Yule?â their boss asked.
Lyvia cleared her throat. âYes, sir, just fine. Sorry,â she said, staring at Shar with wide eyes.
âPlease show Miss Yule around, Sharissa.â
Shar smiled, âyes, sir.â
Once they were out of the office, Lyvia took hold of Sharâs hand and stared at her wrist.
âI have heard of this before, but Iâve never seen it,â she said, turning Sharâs wrist over and reading the word Unity out loud. âWho is he?â she asked, looking up into Sharâs eyes.
âHeâs behind you.â Shar smiled and pointed behind Lyvia.
Lyvia spun around and placed her hand against her chest. âHoly fuck.â
Dustin chuckled, ânice to meet you, too.â
âSorry,â Lyvia said, out of breath.
âLyvia, this is my mate, Dustin.â
Lyvia smiled up at the tall man. âNice to meet you. Can I see your markings?â
Dustin chuckled as he held his wrists out to her.
âWow,â Lyvia whispered. âDid it hurt?â she asked, looking from one to the other.
Shar chuckled, âif you consider your flesh burning, any kind of pain, yeah, sure, it hurt.â
Dustin laughed, âshe screamed like a banshee.â
Shar snorted. âYeah, well, I didnât have years of knowledge of what was happening.â
âI doubt that would have helped,â Dustin said as he pulled her against his chest and kissed her.
Lyvia cleared her throat, and the couple parted.
âSorry, right, I need to give you a tour of the building,â Shar said as she pulled away from Dustin.
âRight,â Lyvia said with a smile.
âWe wonât need you, Dustin. We should be okay,â Shar assured her mate.
Dustin shook his head, âyou know I donât let you out of my sightâ¦.â
âI donât need a bodyguard hereâyou know that. He wonât attack us with so many witnesses. The actual reason youâre here is that you have nothing else to do.â
He chuckled, âitâs because I hate the thought of being away from you all day.â
Shar grinned and said, âsee. Weâll be back in thirty minutes. Okay?â
Dustin sighed, âalright. But if youâre not back in thirty, Iâm coming looking for you.â
Sharissa grinned up at Dustin. âWouldnât expect anything less.â
He nodded, gave her a quick kiss, and headed back to her desk.
âWow,â Lyvia said as she watched Dustin walk away. âHeâs hot and tall.â
Shar chuckled, âthat he is.â
âSo, is it true?â Lyvia asked, looking at Shar. âDid you get his abilities?â
Shar nodded. âA few of them so far. And heâs a lot stronger, too.â
Lyvia sighed. âI wish it was in my cards to find my mate.â
Shar nodded, âmaybe your Goddesses will smile down on you.â
Lyvia grinned, âI hope so. Now, letâs get this tour over with so we can get you back to your tall drink of water.â
Shar chuckled and started the tour.

Tate snuck into the building where Sharissa Flemmings worked and took the elevator to her floor. She wasnât at her desk, so he went in search of her. He heard female voices down the hall and followed them.
âThis place is a wonderful place to work,â the blond said as she showed the brunette around the break room.
âI can imagine so,â the brunette said with a wide smile. âOh, hello. Do you work here too?â the brunette asked when she saw Tate.
âNot quite,â Tate said as he approached them.
Sharissa Flemmings stared at him. âIâve never seen you around here before.â
Tate smiled. âBecause Iâve never been here before,â he said as he looked into the brunetteâs eyes. âYou want to go back to your desk now.â
The brunetteâs silver eyes glossed over. âOf course,â she said, then walked out of the room.
âWait, Lyvia!â
âDonât worry about the shifterâyou want to come with me,â Tate said, looking into Sharissaâs eyes.
Sharissaâs eyes clouded over. âOf course I do. How silly of me,â she said with a smile.
Tateâs eyebrows lifted. Okay, that was odd. They usually say two words, which is more often than not, âof course,â before they do his bidding. âThis way,â he said as he started walking.
Sharissa followed him to the elevator, but when he stepped inside, she didnât follow.
âWait, I need toâ¦.â
âYou need to follow me,â Tate said, looking into her eyes again, which had started to focus.
âOh, of course,â she said with a smile as she joined him in the elevator.
This was getting odder and odder. They got to the bottom floor, and luckily, no one was in the reception area as they left the building. He led her to the alley and pressed her against the office building wall.
âNow, to get serious,â he said with a smile. âYou love Johnny Vega....â
She shook her head, âno, I donât.â
Tate stared at her, stunned. What the hell was going on? âYou love your boyfriend,â he said.
She nodded. âYes, I am in love with my boyfriend.â
He sighed with relief, âyou will go back to him and tell him you love him.â
She shook her head. âIâm not ready to tell him yet.â
He grunted. This chick is off her rocker or something. There has to be a reason she was disobeying his commands.
âGo tell Johnny that you love him.â
She frowned, âbut I donât love Johnny.â
He growled, âyes, you do. Johnny is your boyfriend, and you love him more than anythingâ¦.â
âNo. Johnny is not my boyfriendâI do not love Johnny.â
âWhat the fucking shit?â Tate grumbled. He took hold of her shoulders and looked deeper into her eyes. âYou love Johnny Vega, and you will tell him how much you love him and tell him youâre sorry for ever leaving him.â
She blinked, âno.â
âNO?! What do you mean, no?!â
She blinked again, and he calmed his irritation.
âOkay, why wonât you tell Johnny you love him?â May as well get some answers from her.
âBecause I never loved Johnny, and I have a mate now. I love my mate.â
âMate? What the fuck?â He grumbled, then took her face in his hands. âHow do you have a mate?â
âI found him when I went to hire a bodyguard. He is tall and beautiful and all mine,â she said with a wide grin.
He shook his head. âThis cannot be. There is only one mating that is strong enough to withstand me,â he grumbled as he took hold of her hands and looked at her wrists. âAh, fuckâ
âThis is not good,â he thought as he looked back into her eyes.
âWho is your mate, Sharissa?â
She smiled, pure joy on her face. âDustin Kraftman.â
âI am so fucking screwed,â he groaned as he started pacing the alley. Occasionally, he looked at Sharissa Flemmings.
She still had that beautiful grin on her face, and it killed him; he was messing with her mind. But he couldnât let her go just yet. She will freak. He needs to get her back to her office and tell Johnny Vega to find someone else to help him because heâs out.
~ð±~
Dustin saw Lyvia but not Sharissa. He stood and moved over to the female shifter.
âExcuse me, do you know where my desk is?â she asked a man sitting at a desk. The man shook his head, and she sighed.
âLyvia?â Dustin asked when he got to her.
She looked at him and smiled. âHi, do you know where my desk is?â
âWhere is Sharissa?â
âSheâs with the man; he told me I need to go to my desk. Do you know where my desk is?â
Dustin growled and took hold of her shoulders. âWhat, man?!â
She blinked up at him. âDo you know where my desk is?â
âWhere is Sharissa, Lyvia?!â he asked as he gave her a gentle shake.
âShe is with the manâhe told me to return to my desk. Do you know where my desk is?â
Dustin growled and pulled her to the desk next to Sharissaâs.
Lyvia sat in the chair at her desk, then blinked.
âDustin?â she asked, looking up at him, her eyes clearing.
âWhere is Sharissa?â Dustin asked with a little more patience.
âUhm. This man came into the break room. He told me to go back to my desk or something like that, and all I could think about was how I needed to return to my desk, but I didnât know where it was.â
âYou didnât see him leave with Shar?â
She shook her head, âno. Who was he?â
âA vampire,â he retorted.
âHoly fuck,â she said with wide eyes.
âI need to find Sharissa.â He got to his feet and headed for the elevator.
âWait up,â Lyvia said, running after him.
Just as they got to the elevator, it dinged, and the man and Sharissa entered the hall.
âFuck,â the vampire cursed when he saw Dustin.
âTate!â Dustin hollered with a growl.
âLook, Dustin, I can explainâ¦.â
But Dustin didnât give him time to explain. His fist connected with the vampireâs jaw before he could explain himself.
âOkay, I deserved that,â Tate said, rubbing his jaw. Dustin moved to hit him again, and Tate held up a hand. âYou only get one free pass, Brother. Think about it.â
Dustin paused, and Tate pushed Sharissa toward him.
âShe is unharmed. Take your mate.â
Dustin looked down into Sharissaâs smiling face. Her eyes were glazed over, and she was still under the vampireâs spell.
âHow do I break your enchantment?â he asked with a growl.
âKiss her,â Tate said with a shrug.
Dustin mumbled as he pulled his mate into his arms and kissed her.
Sharissa moaned as her body relaxed against him. When Dustin pulled back, he watched her eyes clear, her smile never leaving her face.
âWe need to talk.â
âNo fucking shit,â Dustin said, looking at his friend.
âIâll meet you at your place tonight,â Tate said, then turned and vanished.
âWhoa,â Lyvia said with wide eyes.
âWhat happened?â Sharissa asked, looking at them, confused.
âYou just met your first vampire,â Dustin said, looking at the spot the vampire had vanished.
