Chapter Eighteen
Forever Yours
Everyone was on my neck. The wedding was in six weeks and for one I didn't have a dress yet. After my argument with Andrew that made me not talk to him since then, I hadn't had thoughts of a dress.
The guest list was getting bigger with every passing day though I had mentioned that I only wanted a few guests but Miles' mum wouldn't have it, she is basically inviting all of New York.
The gifts and souvenirs we had ordered are a day late and my mother wants to kill me. The venue we had agreed on for the reception is having second thoughts. They had refunded the half payment we made when we booked for the hall, now I have to find another hall in five weeks.
It feels like I'm going crazy. The pressure is much and I just want to curl into a ball and roll into a hole, where no one is going to see me. What pains me most is that I'm going through all these troubles for a wedding I don't want.
"Funke what is it?" I asked immediately I walked into my house. She had called me earlier to come home that it was urgent.
"I know you're probably going to hate me for this but you have to sit down first." She said while coming down the stairs to meet me, a big brown box in her hand.
"What is that?" I placed my handbag on the coffee table.
"Just sit first, please." She dropped the box on the coffee table then dusted her hands.
"Okay," I sat down and stared at the box. "What is in there."
"You'll hate me but thank me later, open it." She gave me a small pocket knife.
I took the knife and began cutting the tape used to hold the box together. When I was done I slowly opened the box and I froze when I saw what was inside.
"You didn't," I shook my head. Angry but happy at the same time. She just saved me a lot of trouble.
"I did," she took out the dress from the box.
It was the wedding dress that I had chosen that day but it was what caused the quarell between Andrew and I.
"You bought it?" I held the white dress in my hand and stood up, pulling it fully out of the box and placing it towards my body.
"Yes. It was the only dress you put interest in but I didn't let your quarell with Andrew stop me, you deserve to have this dress." She held the bottom of the dress, straightening it on the floor, it was flowing. "It's really beautiful so put it on."
I chuckled, not able to express the slight anger I felt, the fact that she bought the dress and didn't tell me. I took off my clothes anyways and stepped into the dress. She helped me adjust and arrange then she held up a finger at me and told me to wait, that she was coming before she ran upstairs.
My front door opened and in walked my mother, her mouth dropped when she saw me. "Where's did you get this dress?"
"Funke," I chuckled. "What do you think?"
She touched the dress and her eyes didn't stop scanning me from head to toe. "It's beautiful, I love it. It's perfect."
I smiled and Funke came back downstairs with the long and movable mirror in her hands. She stood a few meters from me and held the mirror to face me.
The dress was really beautiful but it looked way better on me. It was simple, yet elegant at the same time, I was already in love with myself by just looking at myself in the dress.
"Are you my guardian angel Funke?" I joked and everyone laughed.
"You chose the dress Vick, I just finished the job for you." She shrugged and rested the mirror on the nearest wall than came to stand beside me. "You look so fucking gorgeous right now, Miles is lucky to have you."
I chuckled and chose to ignore her statement. The sentence is supposed to go like this, "Andrew is lucky to have you."
"One thing off the list now, help me out of the dress please, I've got things to do and admiring myself in the dress all day isn't part of it."
Funke nodded and helped with the zipper. "Where are you going to from here?"
"I need to get another dress, remember the Thanksgiving dinner with Miles and his family. None of the dresses I have is good enough." I said while stepping out of the dress and trying not to get it ruined in any way.
"Thanksgiving dinner with Miles and his family?" Mum asked, announcing her presence again, I had almost forgotten she was here.
"Yeah, he invited me. Since neither you or Dad mentioned anything about Thanksgiving, I agreed to go." I answered while putting on my previous clothes.
"Okay then, my regards to his family." She said. "But we need to talk now," she picked her handbag from the couch and beckoned for me to follow her out.
"Come on, I'll drop you." She said while unlocking her car.
I wanted to protest but I got into her car and buckled my seatbelt, waiting for her to speak.
"About the wedding," she started, stealing small glances at me. "I was thinking, why must we use a hall?"
I looked at her, "like an outdoor wedding?"
"Yes," she nodded. "Everything will be outdoor, the joining, the reception, thank God it isn't raining yet."
"I never thought of that. That'll be great mum," I grinned, mentally ticking one item off my list. "But where are we going to use?"
"I was thinking your fathers backyard, it's spacious. Or the Jacobs' I'm going over there to see if it's bigger than ours, whichever is bigger." She said and I nodded.
"Okay, tell me how it goes after. I'm stopping at ShopRite first."
She nodded and continued driving. When she dropped me, I went into the first boutique I saw and I didn't see a dress I liked. Two shops after and I didn't see what I liked so I called Funke, she's always saving me when it comes to dresses.
"Trouble?" She asked when she picked the call.
"Big one, I can't find anything to wear." I sighed as I ran my hand through the dresses in the fourth shop I entered.
"Must you wear a dress? How about a jumpsuit? Is there a law that says you can't wear a jumpsuit to a Thanksgiving dinner?" She said and I sighed heavily.
"I don't think so. You're a genius, you know that right?" I smiled and went to the next isle.
"I know," I could imagine her smirking now. "Call me if you have something." She hung up.
I found a jumpsuit I liked quickly. It was a blue turtle neck, sleeveless palazzo jumpsuit. I had a pair of silver sandal heels I could wear with it so I was good to go.
One item off the list now.
On my way to meet the wedding planner to finalize some things, mum called me and said the wedding would be at my father's house since it happens to have a bigger backyard.
When I was almost finished with the wedding planner, the delivery agent of the souvenirs called and said they were already at my house but no one was there.
I called Funke and she claimed that she had gone out and was quite far from the house so I had to go back since I was closer, leaving the wedding planner.
By the time they were done offloading everything into my living room, I was exhausted so I laid on the couch and the moment I closed my eyes, I slept off.

I felt someone shake me so I swatted their hand away and turned to my side, ignoring whoever it was. I felt the shake again before a loud slap landed on my leg.
"What do you want?" I yelled, my eyes closed.
"Get up, you have a lot of things to do," Funke said, still shaking me.
"Please leave me alone I want to sleep," I groaned and covered my head with the throw pillow I was resting my head on.
I thought Funke had really left me until I felt her holding my legs and she pulled. I held unto the couch but was too slow, my body hit the floor.
"Fuck you," I threw the pillow at Funke which she dodged.
"Get up now, you have a lot to cover." She offered her hand which I swatted away at first but later took it and let her pull me up.
"What's the time?" I tiredly rubbed my eyes, it felt like I hadn't had enough sleep.
"Almost twelve in the afternoon. The wedding planner called, you still have some stuffs to finalise, then you have to get ready for the dinner tonight with Miles' family." She stated and I groaned.
"Can't I just skip all of it?"
"Nope," she shook her head and grabbed my arm, pushing me towards the stairs. "Now will you go upstairs and take a long shower, you need it."
"Is there food?" I dragged my feet on the floor as I reluctantly moved towards the stairs.
"Yes, now go shower and change so you can eat." She wove her hand dismissively and I used the last of my strength to drag myself upstairs.
