Chapter 30

30

Injured (Hinata x Kageyama)

Kageyama woke up in a panic, as he heard his alarm go off.

It wasn't him not expecting the alarm that shocked him, but what the sound was. For the past few years of his life, his alarm had always been the same. Just the default music that came with his alarm clock.

Yesterday however, he invited Nishinoya, Tanaka, and Yamaguchi over to study, so it was probably Nishinoya who changed his alarm to "SOMEBODY TOUCHA MY SPAGHET" on repeat.

He groaned and rubbed his eyes. He hit snooze and decided to give himself another five minutes.

Bad idea.

"SOMEBODY TOUCHA MA SPAGHET! SOMEBODY TOUCHA MY SPAGHET! SOMEBODY-"

Kageyama bolted up again, and quickly dismissed his alarm.

"Tobio? What is that?"

His mom came into his room, yawning and still in her pajamas.

"Uh nothing," Kageyama reassured. "My friends just came over and changed my alarm."

"Alright, where are you going today?"  Kageyama made his way to the washroom.

"I'm going over to Yamaguchi's to hang out."

In his peripheral vision he saw his mom put her hands on her hips.

"...And study?"

She grinned. "Then why aren't you packing your books?"

"Ugh I will.." Kageyama said as he shut the washroom door.

After a moment she sighed. "Tobio, I'm just glad you made friends."

"Sure."

"Don't sound so sarcastic," Kageyama heard her say. "We both know you were quite introverted before. But in a year, you seemed to become closer to your old volleyball friends, and make other friends."

Kageyama poked his head in front of his door. "Mom, shouldn't you be somewhere? It's Sunday, and that's when you usually have your shift."

"It's at twelve today," She hummed. "Okay okay I'll stop bothering you. Have fun today!"

Kageyama yawned as he brushed his teeth lazily. He had terrible bedhead today, and his hair was flying around everywhere. He went back into his room to look for a comb.

As he faltered into his room, he accidentally bumped into his wardrobe.

"Ow..." He whined and rubbed his head. Seconds later the objects he on top of it came crashing down on him as well.

"Shit..." He shoved the box of his chest.

He stood up and noticed that he was bleeding slightly. He looked at the box for any sharp edges but didn't see one in particular.

"Huh." He picked up the box and put it back on top. As he picked up the other objects that fell he saw something glistening slightly.

He picked it up and rubbed his eyes, unsure what it was, as it was still really early in the morning.

"Tobio I'm being called in early today!" His mom  called from downstairs, startling him and making him drop the object.

"Okay!" He looked down and suddenly the object was nowhere in sight.

He decided not to think much about it, and picked up the knee pad that had fell and put it back on the wardrobe.

As he exited his house and locked his door to leave however, he couldn't help but feel as if something in him was missing.

"You're late!" Yamaguchi grinned, as he let Kageyama through the door.

"Why'd you even invite this guy anyway?" Tsukishima called out, as he sat lazily on the couch.

Their textbooks were spread out messily around the floor and study sheets were scattered randomly.

"Midterms are coming up, we should study together."

"If by studying you mean play video games for 3 hours and study for 10 minutes..." Tsukishima scoffed.

"Annoyed that I interrupted your date today?" Kageyama smirked.

"Shut up."

Yamaguchi disappeared into the kitchen. "Do you guys want Sprite?"

"Yep." The two of them said in unison. Kageyama got out his books and binders.

"Wanna play Wii?" Tsukishima suggested.

"I thought we were studying," Kageyama raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah but I borrowed Super Smash Brooos from Haechan yesterday," Yamaguchi grinned.

"Who's that?" Kageyama asked reluctantly.

Tsukishima and Yamaguchi quickly exchanged glances and their faces dropped.

"This first-year on our team."

"Oh?" Kageyama replied nonchalantly.

"He's pretty chill you should meet him some day."

"Sure."

"And Kageyama... our team-"

"Hey let's play Wii shall we? Pass the controller." Kageyama forced a smile.

"Okay but you suck at Smash," Tsukishima scoffed.

"Let's see about that."

"Guys-" It was too late, they were already fully in their competitive mode, and Yamaguchi could do nothing but watch.

Kageyama yawned as he mounted his bike, and waved goodbye to Yamaguchi and Tsukishima.

"You tired King?" Tuskishima mocked.

"Y'all live so far from me, next time you try biking to my house."

"See ya tomorrow," sang the pinch server.

"Have fun on your date!"

"Shut up." Tsukishima countered.

Kageyama biked tirelessly and finally stopped at a red light. He made a turn into a smaller street and continued on his route.

He looked behind him and in the other directions. It was clear.

He slowly let go of the handlebar and continued to bike. He quickly faltered and lost his balance. In a quick attempt to regain control he swerved violently, and did not notice a pedestrian approaching his way.

"Woah!" It was too late when he finally noticed the person ahead of him. He tried to swerve out of the way and brake at the same time but ended up crashing into the person.

"Shoot, I'm so sorry are you okay?" Kageyama quickly got off the bike and set it down. He held out his hand to the person he had crashed into. The person was a man not much older than Kageyama, but extremely handsome. He might be a famous actor or model, but Kageyama didn't follow pop culture.

He chuckled and let Kageyama pull him up. "It's fine. Were you trying to learn how to bike no handed?"

"Yeah," Kageyama said sheepishly. "Sorry about that."

"You gotta practice one-handed first." The more Kageyama looked at him the more familiar he looked. He could be a famous actor he had saw in a movie before. He contemplated if he should ask for a photo with him.

He didn't realize he was talking to him the entire time and now seemed to be waiting for a response from Kageyama.

"Yes!" Kageyama blurted out.

The blond raised an eyebrow. "Do I know you?"

"Well, I was actually going to say the same." Kageyama replied. So he probably wasn't a celebrity.

"Kageyama?"

"Yep," Kageyama croaked, dumbfounded that he still had no idea who the other was.

"Oh, it's me, Satou!" the blond boy beamed. "It's been a while since I saw you!"

"It has been, sorry that I didn't recognize you. You dyed your hair blond." Kageyama didn't mention that Satou also seemed to get even more handsome, somehow.

"You changed your look too! You styled your hair up. Where'd the bangs go?" Satou teased. "Who even are you?"

Kageyama chuckled slightly. They fell silent as there wasn't much to say for small talk.

Kageyama mumbled. "Well I haven't seen you since..."

"Yeah the incident," Satou interrupted quickly.

"It was quite... a day," Kageyama said awkwardly.

"How do you think he's do-" Satou glumly asked.

"Fine. Probably. Who knows." Kageyama interrupted.

They stood across from each other unsure what to say.

"Well I gotta go, I guess," Satou smiled softly. "See you around Kageyama."

Kageyama waved. "See ya."

"And if you hear from the place..."

Kageyama nodded.  "I'll let you know."

"Do you have my number?"

"Uhh..." Kageyama flushed in embarrassment, and handed his phone to him.

When Kageyama got home, his mom was already there.

"You were gone for quite a while." She folded her arms.

"Yamaguchi lives far."

"Mhm." She coaxed.

"I also bumped into an old friend."

"Didn't know you had any of those." She teased.

He walked upstairs, and flopped on his bed. He tossed and turned, restlessly. It wasn't night yet, but he was exhausted.

Meeting Satou changed his mood completely.

He got out of bed eventually and instantly tripped.

"Today's such a crappy day." Kageyama ranted to himself. "First I bump into handsome ol' Satou, knock over shit..."

Something shined in his peripheral vision, and he turned his head. Under his bed, a sharp object's light reflected into his eyes. He crawled under and reached for it.

It was the scalpel.

He looked at his arm again and saw the cut he got when he bumped into his wardrobe. This must have been where it came from.

He wondered if he was really that stupid to put such a sharp object at such a high area.

But he felt his heart wrench as he looked at the scalpel.

He felt the scalpel slip from his hand as he sat down on his bed again.

The scalpel was a reminder that he broke his promise to Hinata.

A/N: Ok so the weather is still weird. It's June and almost July but it isn't even hot? Which is a good thing I have to say, but sometimes it's kinda chilly.

Anyways I consider this chapter the start of a "new season" perhaps? I wasn't sure what to call it (someone gimme ideas), but there's a time jump between last chapter and this, and you'll find out what happened in between slowly as the story unfolds.
