Injured (Hinata x Kageyama)
"Have you been writing poetry, Kageyama-kun?"
"Huh?"
"That seemed really poetic."
"I was being serious..."
"Come on Kageyama, you know it's not true. You can get along with anyone else in terms of volleyball, and adjust to their style. It's really probably not... fun to set to me, is it?"
"Hinata... as much as it's tiring... exhausting... tossing to you is the best part of volleyball."
"Why would it be fun if it's tiring?"
"Is volleyball fun to you, Hinata? Spiking especially?"
"Of course!"
"And isn't volleyball and spiking tiring?"
"I see." Hinata said as he started to grin a bit. It made sense. Not everything that was tiring wasn't fun, and volleyball itself was boring.
"Shouyou!"
"Kenma!?" The Nekoma pair, Kuroo and Kenma, who Kageyama knew as pudding hair and bed-head hair had entered the room.
"Kenma had actually dragged me here surprisingly.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. It's really okay." The three had ignored Kageyama and they acted as if he didn't exist in the room. Kageyama knew he never had many friends. He never had a friend actually. The volleyball club was his home, and his family. He thought he had finally made friends, Hinata especially... and maybe something more special.
But here he was, just watching them chat, and standing there awkwardly. He noticed how the tone of Hinata's voice had changed when he was addressing the Nekoma setter. He usually wasn't one to be very observant on things like this, but he could tell now- Hinata was different around Kenma. There was definitely something up with it.
"Okay, we'll get going then?"
"Yep, thanks for coming by!" Hinata said cheerily.
"I mean, we had to. If I didn't, Kenma would have murdered me in my sleep." Kuroo teased, making Kenma blush in embarrassment.
"No!"
"Yeah!"
"Nope- bye Hinata!" It was as if they actually didn't know Kageyama was there.
"Kageyama? How long have you been standing there?" Hinata exclaimed as he turned his head towards the setter.
"Long enough. You didn't even remember I was here?"
"You didn't make any sound at all!"
"And maybe because you like Kenma?"
"Kenma? Me? He's my friend!" Hinata didn't know what to think at the statement made from Kageyama. What did he mean?
"The way you talk to him is so like- cheery and overly positive."
"I don't do that!"
"You sure do!"
"Kageyama are you jealous?"
"Pfft jealous? Why would I be?"
"That's what I don't understand! I mean, it's not like you like me or your my mom or whatever."
"Oh wow."
"Wait... you don't really... do you?"
"Huh?" Kageyama felt his heart beat faster almost immediately.
"You think you're my mom?" Hinata asked in confusion, startling his friend.
"What the actual fu-" This was obviously not what Kageyama was expecting.
"Don't swear! There are kids watching!"
"I was not expecting that, dumbass!"
"Did I just expose you?"
"Why would you think I thought that I was your mom?"
"I can't think of a better explanation."
"That's stupid. Besides, Sugawara-san is the mother figure of our team." Kageyama said as he rolled his eyes. He was however, secretly glad that Hinata hadn't realized he actually had feelings for the shrimp.
"I'm sorry."
"Huh? Where did that come from?"
"I injured myself, selfishly. Now our team-"
"No," Kageyama interrupted. "Don't you dare say anything like that again."
"Why? I obviously ruined it for the team."
"That's not a single bit true. Think about yourself first!"
"Why would I have to think about myself? This is about our team."
"And blaming yourself isn't going to change anything. You just need to get better."
"What if I don't? They thought I was okay, I did too- and then suddenly nope, I'm not a single bit okay."
"It's hard isn't it?"
"What?"
"Not being able to stand on the court when that's all you've ever wanted." Kageyama didn't mean for it to be deep, but Hinata could feel the emotion in it.
"We don't get along all the time, Kageyama-kun, but I think... the way we think about volleyball connected us. We get each other."
"Where did that come from? I thought we were talking about-"
"Kenma doesn't think volleyball is fun, and I wish I could prove to him... make him feel that it was enjoyable and amazing."
"Everything is about Kenma isn't it?"
"You don't have to be bitter!"
"We're talking about you here. Why did you have to mention him?"
"I wasn't finished talking! You, Kageyama, you're so intense. You care about volleyball so much, it's all you think about. But that's me as well, and I admire you because of that. You have such overwhelming talent and you're so smart... but that's also why I don't understand why you think someone like me is important to the team."
"If you can score points... any point you score on the court-"
"-It goes to the team. But it's not like I'm everything to you." This silenced the setter. What Hinata had just said, made him realize things he wasn't willing to admit.
"You're right." Kageyama stood up, and proceeded to walked away. He didn't know why he was acting like this but he wanted to get out. He didn't want to face his reality.
"Kageyama-kun?" Hinata exclaimed, scared that he had said something wrong.
"I'm going to go, I stayed for a long time. Rest well okay?"
"Er, okay." The setter exited the room and checked both sides of the hall to find everyone minding their own business. He collapsed on the ground and sat against the wall, burying his face in his clothes.
"I need to learn," Kageyama whispered to himself. A tear rolled down his cheek. "To rely on myself. I got so use to needing you... Hinata... needing you all the time. Wanting you to be here with me... everyday. What am I going to do without you? When your gone? It'll be too risky... I can't risk losing myself completely to you... if you leave one day... I'd rather die."
âââ
"Hm? Tobio-chan?"
"Oikawa-san! What are you doing here?" The Aoba Johsai setter had noticed his kohai walking around pointlessly.
"Ahh, I'm getting deja vu, this happened recently didn't it?" The older setter groaned sarcastically. "And were you crying?"
"Huh!? No, of course not."
"Tobio, you were always like this," Oikawa said with a sigh. "Is your motto conceal don't feel? Is there anyone you go to about your feelings? I wouldn't trust myself either if I were you, and I don't know why I'm even talking to you about this- but you look awful. Go talk to someone you trust. I don't want you to die."
"OIKAWA-SAN I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! HINATA IS INJURED AGAIN AND OUR WHOLE TEAM IS KIND OF STRESSED BUT I'M KIND OF JUST OVERLY WORRIED, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, I DON'T KNOW."
"Woah! Calm down! I didn't say to come to me, do I seem trustworthy to you?" Oikawa was startled by the sudden outburst of his rival.
"Oikawa-san, I've known you for a long time though."
"But who said I like you?"
"I didn't say I liked you either, I just mean I trust you." Kageyama replied honestly, bowing down 90 degrees. For some reason, Oikawa felt extremely flattered by this. He always saw the younger setter as competition and that he was just a moron who he despised. He did admire him, secretly, all the time. No matter how much he tried to ignore and hate Kageyama, he always found himself liking the young boy.
"Alright, what is it?"
"Let's just pretend... it's you and Iwaizumi-san. Do you ever sometimes... feel strange around him? Like it's really satisfying to set to him, but outside of volleyball, he's just special?"
"Cut the pretend bullshit, you have strange feelings for Hinata don't you"
"Er- yeah."
"You afraid your parents will disown you for being gay?"
"What! No?"
"Well, I would be. Are you ready to face your feelings for Hinata?"
"Who said I had feelings for him!?"
"You, obviously. It's too obvious."
"It is?"
"Duh-"
"OKAY I THINK I DO, SO NOW WHAT TO I DO? WHAT IF MY PARENTS DO DISOWN ME? I THINK HINATA LIKES KENMA!" Kageyama exclaimed loudly once again startling Oikawa.
"Would you stop doing that!?"
"I haven't been feeling like myself lately, I've been having bad mood swings and I'm a mess-"
"It's okay." Oikawa interrupted. Kageyama tilted his head to the side, not sure on what he meant.
"Okay?"
"There was a time when I was like that too, but I'd like it if you didn't make the same mistakes as I did."
"What happened?"
"I want you to confess. Give up. Go to Hinata; you like him. Don't be a coward."
"I don't think he likes me."
"You sound like a girl from middle school, Tobio-chan."
"Huh!?"
"Are you a coward, Tobio? Aren't you the king of the court?"
"Don't call me that!"
"King... was this why nobody would hit your tosses? You tossed, and there was... noone there." Kageyama felt his heart beat quicker and quicker. "Your own team didn't trust you, goodness. What kind of team is that? No wonder you were... subbed off. Obviously..."
"No, stop..." The nightmares, the horrible memories, Oikawa had successfully reminded him of all of them.
"What's a team with an egocentric and selfish setter? Certainly not a good one."
"Oikawa-"
"But what about a setter that's so filled with feelings that he can't think straight? What if he can't work well with one of his spikers? What if that affects his play in general? How selfish would that be? Your team depends on you and you let your emotions get in the way."
"How did you think of all that?"
"A very special wing spiker of mine, became a bit too special to me. I was stupid and acted... well, stupidly. I messed up, big time, but as you can see my teamwork with the rest of Seijoh is fine. He was the mature one and decided that staying teammates and friends would be the best for both of us."
"When have you ever been stupid?"
"Hm?"
"You were always... a senpai to me. You never seemed to do anything stupid... you were so smart and good at everything." Oikawa frowned, but deep inside his heart he felt... guilt. He told himself he hated Kageyama to the bottom of his heart, but Kageyama had looked up to him. Truly, he realized that he was always the immature one in relationships.
"Well the special someone made me do things I usually wouldn't do. I acted different than I usually did. And that's how you're like right now."
"So it'd be the best if I just... confronted my feelings."
"You're not as stupid as I thought."
"Hey!" Kageyama exclaimed, expression changing quickly once again.
"And besides... I'm pretty sure you know who I was talking about." Oikawa said calmly. And funny enough, the same person had listened to every single word Oikawa had said to Kageyama about him.
