Chapter 149

Isabella was correct. They had been friends with benefits for five years, and
that meant something. It wasnât love, but it was understanding. Seth knew
her inside out. He observed her in places she didnât realize he was looking, like
when he saw her through his office window. He witnessed all the emotions
she expressed in private.
âI was just⦠justâ¦â Isabella wanted to tell him that she wasnât insulting him, but
the words wouldnât come out.
Seth glanced at the rear-view mirror and raised an eyebrow. âYou were being
sarcastic just now.â
Isabella pursed her lips and gazed out the window. âI canât do anything
because I rely on you.â
âIt doesnât seem like youâre submitting,â Seth remarked.
Isabella placed her hands on the back of the seat. Feeling aggrieved, she
said, âI canât submit forever, or it will hurt my back.â She looked at Seth, and
70%
from her position, she could see his profile. âCan I explain myself now, Mr.
Shaffer?â

Seth ignored her and pressed down on the accelerator, speeding up. Lost in
her thoughts, Isabella didnât realize that the speedometer was tilting to the
right. Leaning forward, she said, âI didnât make the sales. I could never have
closed such a big deal.â
Seth narrowed his eyes. Coldly, he said, âSo he gave you the sales?â
Isabella nodded. âJonas did. I couldnât refuse.â
Seth chuckled. âSomeoneâs charming.â
Isabella didnât want to be arrogant now. She said, âI might not have been able
to close the deal, but Jonas might not be able to either. Something seems off
about that deal. Someone needs to investigate.â
Seth wasnât convinced. He said, âYou need evidence to make an accusation
in my company.â
Isabella shrugged. âI donât have any evidence at the moment.â

âThen youâll have to take responsibility. According to the employeeâs manual,
taking credit for someone elseâs work will result inâ¦â Seth stopped and
swallowed the rest of his sentence.
Isabella realized what the consequences could be, and she became excited.
âTermination?â Thatâs the best news Iâve heard all night. If I had known that
taking credit for someone elseâs work would lead to termination, I would have
done it a long time ago.
âOnce youâre terminated, no one in this city will dare to hire you again,â Seth
continued quietly, shattering Isabellaâs dream of escaping.
Deflated, Isabella sank back into her seat.
Annoyed by Isabellaâs sighs, Seth said, âThe company treats you well, and you
canât wait to leave?â
Isabella looked away. âThe company treats me like any other employee.
Youâre the one whoâs kind to me.â She turned away and rested her head on
her arm. Honestly, she said, âIâve been here for five years. I should have a new
direction in life. Leaving the company is just part of my professional plan.â
Seth looked ahead and gripped the steering wheel tighter, then he turned it.
The car suddenly made a U-turn. Isabella was caught off guard and, as she
was leaning to the side, she fell towards the door and bumped her forehead
against the window. After enduring a lot of pain throughout the day, Isabella
was immune to this level of discomfort. Determinedly, she picked herself up.
âMr. Shaffer, Iâ¦â
âOne more word, and thereâs more where that came from.â Seth shot her a
displeased look through the rear-view mirror.
Isabella fell silent. I canât beg him, and I canât reason with him. What does he
want me to do? She realized that Sethâs annoying attitude had reached a
whole new level. I canât get through to him no matter what I do. The scenery
flew past them. Irritated, Isabella looked out the window. There were many
shops on the roadside, but those were not the kind of shops that should be in
this area. Isabella realized that Seth had never asked her where she wanted
to go after getting into the car.
She sat up straighter, feeling a little nervous. âMr. Shaffer, where are we
going?â
Seth chuckled. âSo, you remembered to ask. At least your brain isnât
completely mush.â
Isabella swallowed nervously and looked at the shops outside. She was
certain she hadnât been here before. âItâs getting late. Why donât you stop by
the roadside, and Iâll get out and hail a cab?â She wasnât sure what Seth was
thinking. All she wanted was to get out of the car.
Seth had a strange expression on his face. He leaned back, relaxed. âWhat?
Scared?â
Isabella choked on her words. Her throat was dry, and she tensed up once
again. Because her adrenaline was pumping, she managed to summon
some strength.
Seth continued driving, and Isabella didnât recognize the place they were in.
She suspected they were outside the city. âMr. Shafferâ¦â She tried calling out
to Seth, but before he could answer, the car made another turn. The same
thing happened again, and this time, Isabella bumped into the window on
the other side of the car. He did it on purpose. She was certain this time.
She knew what to do. She lay back in her seat and no longer stubbornly got

Seeing that she had understood her place, Seth was in a good mood, and he
started a conversation. âDid you arrange for those paparazzi to be there?â
Isabella gritted her teeth. She wondered if she should continue being
stubborn or give in.
Seth looked ahead. Coldly and imperiously, he said, âI donât like people saying
foolish things.â
