Part 23: A New Beginning
Unspoken Bonds
The morning after, the sun cast a warm glow over Kion's apartment, its light spilling through the windows and filling the space with a gentle warmth. Kion woke to the sound of AJ humming quietly beside him, his fingers still tangled in Kion's dreads, the rhythmic motion soothing in its simplicity.
Kion stretched, his body still aching from the events of the past few days. The weight of their conversation from the night before was still there, lingering in the back of his mind. But there was something different today-a sense of calm, of hope that hadn't been there before.
"You up?" AJ's voice broke the silence, and Kion turned to see him grinning, his eyes still heavy with sleep.
"Yeah," Kion muttered, his voice hoarse from the night's talk. "Just... thinking."
AJ raised an eyebrow, sitting up slightly. "About what?"
Kion hesitated for a second, unsure of how to put it into words. "About us. About getting out."
AJ nodded, understanding without needing an explanation. He ran a hand through his hair and then leaned back against the headboard. "We'll figure it out. It's not gonna be easy, but we've got time. Just gotta play it smart."
"I know," Kion agreed, sitting up as well, the weight of the decision starting to settle in again. "But I don't want to keep living this way. I need something more, AJ. We need something more."
AJ looked at him for a long moment before nodding. "I'm with you, always. But we gotta make sure we move right. No slip-ups. Big Boss is no joke."
Kion's gaze hardened at the mention of Big Boss, the man who held their lives in his hands. They both knew the consequences of trying to leave, but Kion's resolve only grew stronger. "I'm done being scared of him," he muttered.
AJ studied him, his face softening. "We'll take him down if we have to. But we do it together, alright?"
Kion met his eyes, a silent promise passing between them. "Together."
The next few days were a whirlwind of planning and quiet conversations. They avoided the streets as much as possible, keeping a low profile while AJ made discreet calls and Kion did his best to lay low. Their plan wasn't perfect, but it was the only option they had. It would take time, but Kion was ready. They both were.
One afternoon, as they sat on the balcony once again, Kion's phone buzzed, breaking the silence. He glanced down at the screen, his stomach tightening when he saw the name flashing across it-Big Boss.
"Answer it," AJ said quietly, his voice steady but knowing.
Kion took a deep breath before accepting the call, holding the phone to his ear. "Yeah?"
"Where the hell are you?" Big Boss's voice came through, gruff and demanding.
"Chillin'," Kion replied coolly, trying to keep his tone neutral. "What's up?"
Big Boss's silence stretched for a moment before he spoke again. "I need you to meet me tomorrow. We got business."
Kion's heart skipped a beat. He glanced over at AJ, who gave him a reassuring look.
"Yeah, alright. I'll be there," Kion said, keeping his voice steady. "But I got somethin' I need to discuss with you too. You're gonna wanna hear this."
Big Boss's tone shifted slightly. "What are you talkin' about?"
"I'll tell you tomorrow," Kion said, hanging up the phone before Big Boss could press him further.
He set the phone down with a quiet exhale, looking at AJ. "Tomorrow. It's go time."
AJ nodded slowly, his expression unreadable. "We're ready."
Kion felt his heart race as the weight of what was to come settled on his shoulders. Tomorrow would be the day they made their move, the day they either broke free or paid the price for their defiance.
But no matter what happened, Kion knew one thing for sure: he wasn't facing it alone. AJ was with him, and together, they could face anything.
The sun set slowly over the city, painting the sky with streaks of orange and pink. It was a new beginning, one full of uncertainty and danger, but it was also the beginning of a future they would build for themselves-one step at a time.
Tomorrow was coming, and Kion was ready.
