~Accident prone~
The Boy In the Basement (Completed)
I slid the flowy blue dress off the rack and added it to my collection. Its probably the only one I would actually try on. The other five were way over the top, with feathers poking out the bottom and florescent lace on the sleeves. Whoever the designer is of these must've got dropped as a child, or tossed out the window. I can't believe she picked these out for me. They are the complete opposite of my type.
"Ooh la la!" Riley held up a burgundy dress covered in ruffles, "What do you think?" I made a choking noise, and the smile on my best friends face diminished.
"Come on Bay! Its pretty, and it would look great with your skin tone." There's my fashion-centered friend for ya. Shopping on the weekends, saving every cent for a new pair of heels. I've put up with it for three years now!
Don't get me wrong, Riley was the coolest friend a girl could ask for. Its when she drags me along for these eternal shopping trips that I start complaining.
"Its prom, not The Great Gatsby auditions" I mumbled, "And besides, I don't even think I'll get asked this year." She folded the dress into her arms anyway and shook her head in disbelief.
"Yes you will. I'm sure a million guys want to go with you, they're are just waiting for the right moment to pop the question." Riley kept rambling on and on. I tuned her out and thought back to two nights ago, when those deep brown eyes locked with mine. Oh, how I wished to run my hands through his messy coal-black hair..... Whoa hold up. Don't get too carried away.
I cut the daydreaming early and travelled back to reality, looking over at Riley. She had a knowing smile on her face. Her mouth opened and I braced myself for an interrogation.
"Who's on your mind, Bayley Marie Davis?" She crossed her arms and smirked at me. Act natural.
"Oh its no one." Might as well write liar on my forehead. By the look on Riley's face, I could tell she didn't buy it.
"Doesn't look like no one. Tell!" Her eyes lit up, ready to absorb every detail. I groaned, and decided I might as well spill. She would have gotten it out of me one way or another.
"I was babysitting for the Berks last night. You know, my moms friend?" I paused to check if she was following along. Riley nodded impatiently. I continued,
"Well, Heather is renting out her basement so she can afford the house. Because of the divorce and all...." I paused. Lets not get into details. I saved Riley from a very boring, very long talk about Heather's husband and got straight to the point.
"I ran into this really cute guy named Jaxon and... um, hesortoffellontopofme."
Its nice to have that out of my system. Riley stared at me with a confused expression. Then, as if a wave of realization washed over her, her jaw dropped.
"Jaxon? As in, The Jaxon Bennett?" I shrugged. She could not contain her excitement, and started smacking my arm.
"Ow! Stop Riley!.... This. Is. Abuse! " Riley pulled away (finally) and I rubbed my arm as it slowly reddened. Jeesh woman get it together.
"Sorry" she managed insincerely, "Okay, just answer me. What did he look like? Dark hair? Brown eyes? Totally gorgeous? Oh, was he ripped? Did you feel his muscles?" Riley started bombarding me with questions. They shifted from funny to just downright annoying. I clasped my hand over her mouth and she shut up. Thats better.
"Look, I think that's him, but stop overreacting, okay? What's so special about this dude anyway?" I removed my hand and wiped the drool on my pants. Gross! Riley beamed at me.
"He just so happens to be Riverside's Bad Boy. You know, the other high school down the road?" Huh, wasn't expecting that. Well, he is beyond attractive. The guy's at my school are, like, hobos compared to him. I pondered his beauty until I noticed Riley's intense stare.
"So, he's a total player, then" I spoke softly, more to myself.
I knew it was too good to be true. Jaxon probably does this to all the girls at his high school. There was no way I was going to fall for him. I would just be tossed away like the rest into his pile of used garbage. Wow, what a similie. Guess I did learn something from english class. I faintly heard Riley saying something along the lines of 'Don't let this opportunity pass you by'. I ignored it.
"When's your next babysitting job" she asked me lightly. I didn't register I had zoned out again. See, look what the subject of boys does to a girl! I'm losing it.
"Whenever they need me" I uttered, "Look, lets just try on these dresses!" Riley looked disappointed, but agreed nonetheless.
"Fine, but lets find you one more dress." She flipped her beach blonde hair over her shoulder, and adjusted the massive pile of clothes. My gaze fixed onto the gown in front of me; a mini white dress polished with sparkles at the neckline. "How about this-" I yanked it off the rack with too much force. Uh oh.
The whole entire rack came crashing down, along with the fancy manikin. I gasped and looked around. Everyone flitting about the store grew completely silent, and turned their attention to me. I felt my cheeks flare up as a plump women a couple feet away scowled at me. Riley's shoulders shook while she supressed a laugh. Ugh, why do I have to be so accident-prone? Can't I just be a normal 16 year old?
"Lets get out of here" I said in a low voice while eyeing the manager, who was currently shooting daggers in my direction. We ditched the dresses and hurried out of the store, Riley giggling like a fool.
"No more shopping for you" She retorted in between laughter.

I slipped off my brown boots and walked inside, warmth pricking my skin. My mom was in the kitchen, swatting away the smoke coming from a boiling pot. I was home a little early due to the unsuccessful trip to the mall. She gave me a surprised look as I stepped into the kitchen.
"Back so soon? I thought you said 7:30." She turned around and started kneading the dough on the counter. I headed towards the sink and turned the water on hot.
"Yeah, well, I've never been that much of a shopper" I remarked. Once my hands were cleaned, I cut the dough in half and started rolling it into strips. The silence was nice... or atleast it was, before my mom interrupted my moment of peace.
"Heather called today. She was wondering if you would be up to babysitting again." I turned to face her and thought over the offer. After what happened on Thursday, things would be a little strange between Jaxon and I. But I really could use some money....
"Sure. When does she need me?"
"Every Wednesday for the next month and a half. Plus a couple Friday's if she has to work overtime." What???
"Um, excuse me? May I remind you that I have a life?" My mom sighed, and turned to look at me with her weary blue eyes.
"I already told her yes. She's going through a rough time, its the least we could do-"
"You mean the least I could do. You haven't done anything" I snapped angrily. This wasn't the first time she had messed up my life without permission. "If you think you can just-"
"Enough, Bayley. You're doing it and that's final." She turned back to making dinner as if nothing had even happened. I clenched my teeth together. Just let it go. But it was easier said than done. I stomped off into my room instead, and snatched a pillow from my bed to scream into.
My mom thinks she has control over me, and for the past sixteen years, I've had to deal with a variety of decisions she makes 'For my own good.' Like canceling our T.V. a year ago. Or confiscating my skateboard because it was too dangerous. Ever since my dad left us, she became overprotective and mean. I never even got a say in the matter. She's taking over my life, and I hate it. I hate her.
After a very quiet meal, I excused myself and brushed my teeth quickly, avoiding my mom at all costs. I'm not ready to face her yet. I'll just end up yelling in her face and causing a bigger problem. I slipped on a overlarge t-shirt and shorts, making sure to lock the door, before climbing under my floral sheets.
I didn't hate my mom. We have been together through thick and thin, and no matter what I do, I know she will love me in the end. I just wish she could see notice how I feel. She needs to stop being the 'perfect parent' for once and just be my mom. Why does life have to be so complicated.
I turned over to the side and pulled the covers closer to my face. As soon as my eyes drooped close, thoughts about Jaxon conquered my brain. I dreamed about his strong arms wrapped around me, forgetting all my fears and troubles. Hey, maybe babysitting won't be so bad after all.
Well, I hope ya'll liked it. PLEASE tell me what'ya think, i'd really appreciate it! Don't be shy :) Comment n Vote- keeps me motivated.
P.S.- The shopping incident is based off a real event.....hahaha
