Chapter 56 – Facing the Day
Astralyth Online
Madelyn stirred, her mind still foggy as she slowly came to consciousness. Fragments of the night before flickered through her mindâfear, anger, confusion, and then Sarahâs voice. That voice had pulled her back from the edge of chaos, grounding her when she thought sheâd be lost. She remembered opening her eyes and seeing Sarahâs warm, determined expression as she soothed her. But something else had happenedâsomething strange. She had been⦠a small fox.
Now, as she tried to shift into a more comfortable position, something felt off. Her body wasnât responding the way she expected it to. Her limbs were short and small, her tail was curled against her, and her senses were unusually heightened. She felt fur brushing against her skin with every tiny movement, and the soft texture of fabric beneath her paws.
And then there was the odd sensation of lying on something warm and softâsomething that moved slightly with every breath.
Madelyn froze, her ears twitching as she tried to process what she was feeling. Her amber eyes flicked open, and she realized she was nestled on Sarahâs chest, her head resting over her friendâs heart. Sarahâs arm was wrapped loosely around her, holding her securely in place, while her steady breathing created a gentle rise and fall beneath Madelyn.
Madelynâs eyes widened in shock as the reality of her situation hit her. She was still in her fox form, and she was lying on Sarah. Her ears flattened in embarrassment, her tiny body stiffening as she tried to figure out what to do. She squirmed slightly, hoping to slip free without waking Sarah, but the arm draped around her tightened instinctively.
âMm⦠Maddy?â Sarahâs sleepy voice murmured, her tone groggy but soft. Her hand moved, her fingers brushing lightly against Madelynâs fur. âYou okay?â
Madelyn froze again, her heart racing. All she could do was stare up at Sarah with wide, apologetic eyes.
Sarahâs eyelids fluttered open, and for a moment, she simply stared at the little fox curled against her. Then a warm smile spread across her face. âOh, hey,â she said softly. âYou scared me last night, you know.â
Madelyn whimpered softly, lowering her head as her tail curled tighter against her body. She didnât know how to convey how sorry she was for worrying Sarahâor how mortified she felt about the position she was in.
But Sarah didnât seem fazed. She reached up to scratch gently behind one of Madelynâs ears, her touch soothing and affectionate. âItâs okay, Maddy,â she said. âIâve got you. Youâre safe.â
Madelyn let out a small sigh, her body relaxing slightly despite her embarrassment. Sarahâs calm and caring demeanor made it hard to feel anything but comforted, even in such an awkward situation.
Madelyn nestled against Sarah a bit closer, her small fox body still cradled in her friendâs arms, her ears twitching as she listened to the soft rhythm of Sarahâs breathing. Despite everythingâthe overwhelming emotions, the strange transformation, waking up in a completely unexpected situationâshe felt oddly calm. It didnât make sense.
Why am I not panicking? she wondered, her mind racing even as her body stayed relaxed. She had every reason to freak out. She was still a fox, curled up on her best friend, who didnât seem remotely concerned that she was, in fact, a fox.
Her tail swished slightly at the thought, betraying her inner turmoil. Sarahâs hand continued to stroke her back gently, as if she instinctively knew how to keep Madelyn grounded. Each touch sent a wave of calm through her, washing away the panic that threatened to creep in.
âYouâre doing that thing again,â Sarah murmured, her voice still heavy with sleep.
Madelyn tilted her head, confused. Doing what thing?
Sarah chuckled softly, her hand brushing against Madelynâs ears again. âOverthinking,â she said, her tone teasing but affectionate. âI can feel it. Your tailâs twitching.â
Madelyn froze, her tail going completely still as if that would somehow make her thoughts less obvious. She looked up at Sarah with wide eyes, a soft whine escaping her throat.
Sarahâs smile softened. âItâs okay, Maddy. You donât have to explain anything. I canât imagine what youâre going through, but⦠I just want you to know that Iâm here, alright?â
Madelyn blinked, her heart swelling at Sarahâs words. She didnât know how Sarah managed to be so understanding, so unwaveringly supportive, but it made all the difference. She pressed her tiny wet nose against Sarahâs arm in a gesture of thanks, hoping it conveyed what she couldnât say.
Sarah grinned. âThatâs what I thought,â she said, her tone light. âNow, letâs figure this out. Do you think you can change back?â
Madelynâs ears drooped. Change back? How? She had no idea how sheâd transformed in the first place, let alone how to reverse it.
Sarah seemed to sense her hesitation. âNo rush,â she said quickly. âLyra mentioned something about your powers being tied to your emotions? Maybe itâs just a matter of calming down and focusing.â
Calming down. Madelyn wasnât sure how she could be any calmer than she already was, but she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, willing her body to change. For a moment, nothing happened. Then, slowly, she felt a tingling sensation wash over her, starting at her paws and spreading through her entire body.
Sarah gasped softly as Madelyn began to grow, her small fox form shifting back into her fox-girl body. Within moments, Madelyn was herself again, still lying partially on Sarah, her face inches from her friendâs.
Madelynâs amber eyes darted to Sarahâs, her cheeks burning as she realized the situation she was in. She was practically lying on top of her best friend, their faces so close she could feel Sarahâs breath against her skin. Her tail swished awkwardly, betraying the storm of emotions churning inside her. âUh⦠hey,â Madelyn murmured, her cheeks flushing even more.
Sarahâs lips quirked into a small, teasing smile, though her own cheeks were tinged with pink. âUh⦠hey yourself,â she said, her voice light but with an edge of something softer.
Madelyn scrambled to sit up, her movements jerky and uncoordinated as she tried to create some distance between them. âIâIâm so sorry!â she stammered, brushing her fiery hair out of her face as if that would somehow help her recover. âI didnât mean to, um, end up⦠like that.â
Sarah sat up more slowly, leaning back on her hands as she watched Madelyn with an amused expression. âRelax, Maddy,â she said, her tone gentle but teasing. âI didnât mind.â
Madelynâs ears twitched uncontrollably. Her blush now a deep red. âYouâyou didnât?â
Sarah shrugged, her grin widening. âI mean, youâre warm, soft, and kind of adorable, so no complaints here.â
Madelyn froze, her heart skipping a beat. Warm? Soft? Adorable? Her mind raced as she tried to process Sarahâs words. Did she mean it? Was she teasing? The combination of Sarahâs playful tone and the sincerity in her eyes made it impossible to tell.
Sarah seemed to notice her friendâs flustered state and decided to lean into it. âYou know,â she said, leaning slightly closer to Madelyn, âyou made these little fox noises in your sleep. Itâs⦠cute.â
Madelyn covered her face with both hands, groaning softly. âStop!â she mumbled, her voice muffled by her palms. âYouâre going to kill me with embarrassment.â
Sarah laughed, the sound bright and musical. âOh, come on, Maddy. Youâre too fun to tease.â
Madelyn peeked at Sarah through her fingers, her heart pounding. âWhy do you like doing this to me?â
Sarahâs grin softened into something more tender, though her eyes still sparkled with mischief. âBecause youâre important to me,â she said simply. âAnd⦠seeing you smileâor blushâmakes me happy.â
Madelynâs breath caught, her hands lowering slightly. She searched Sarahâs face for any hint of insincerity, but all she saw was warmth and a hint of something deeper. âYou mean that?â
Sarah nodded, her smile turning shy for the first time. âOf course I do.â
For a moment, neither of them spoke, the room filled with an almost tangible tension. Then Madelynâs tail swished behind her, breaking the silence with its gentle movement.
âWell,â Sarah said, her voice breaking the spell. âI guess I should add âfox rescuerâ to my list of talents.â
Madelyn giggled despite herself, the sound light and genuine. âYouâre impossible.â
âAnd youâre adorable,â Sarah shot back with a wink, making Madelyn groan and bury her face in her hands again.
But this time, she was smiling.
They sat together for a while longer, leaning against the headboard. The initial awkwardness had faded, replaced by a quiet intimacy. Madelyn hesitated, glancing at Sarah as she tried to put her thoughts into words.
âI⦠I had another dream,â Madelyn started softly, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her blanket. âThere was this figure, cloaked in shadows. I couldnât see their face or even tell if they were male or female, but⦠they felt wrong, like their presence alone was twisting everything around them.â
Sarah shifted closer, her hand finding Madelynâs and giving it a reassuring squeeze. âWhat did they say?â she asked, her voice gentle.
Madelyn swallowed hard, her tail curling slightly against her side. âThey told Aeloria that she could never have a child. That it would bring ruin. And the way they said it, like it wasnât just a warningâit was a threat.â
Sarahâs brows furrowed, her grip on Madelynâs hand tightening briefly. âThatâs awful,â she murmured. âWhat did your mom say? I mean, Aeloria.â
Madelyn managed a faint smile at Sarahâs choice of words. âShe didnât back down. She said if they feared her child, maybe it was their own actions that would bring ruin.â Her voice wavered slightly as she continued. âBut the whole scene just felt so⦠heavy. Like thereâs something so much bigger going on, and Iâm caught in the middle of it.â
Sarah gave her hand another squeeze, her gaze steady and reassuring. âMaddy, youâre not alone in this. Youâve got me. Weâll figure it out together, okay?â
Madelyn nodded, her heart warming at Sarahâs unwavering support. âThanks,â she said softly. âItâs just⦠hard to piece everything together. Every time I think Iâve learned something, more questions pop up.
Madelyn looked at Sarah. âAlso, what happened when I⦠you know, transformed?â
Sarahâs eyes lit up as she recounted her side of the story. âI heard something from your roomâlike, whimpering or cryingâand I ran in. Lyra was fluttering around like crazy, glowing so bright I could barely see. She was surrounding you with this golden light, trying to calm you down, I think.â
Madelynâs ears perked up as her gaze darted around the room. âWait⦠where is Lyra?â
Sarah blinked, realization dawning on her. âOh, no,â she said, her voice rising in concern. âLyra!â
Both girls scrambled to their feet, scanning the room in a panic. Then they spotted her. Lyra was curled up on one of Madelynâs pillows, which had fallen off her bed, her glow dim and her tiny chest rising and falling in steady breaths.
âSheâs sleeping,â Madelyn said softly, relief washing over her. âShe mustâve used a lot of energy trying to help me.â
Sarah let out a breath she hadnât realized sheâd been holding. âPoor thing,â she murmured, crouching to get a closer look. âShe looks exhausted.â
Madelyn gently adjusted the pillow, making sure Lyra was as comfortable as possible. âSheâs been doing so much for me,â she said quietly. âI owe her so much.â
Sarah smiled, her voice warm. âYou both look out for each other. Thatâs what matters.â
Madelyn nodded, her hand brushing lightly over Lyraâs tiny form. âYeah,â she said softly. âThatâs what matters.â
Madelyn and Sarah made their way downstairs, now dressed and ready for the day. The comforting scent of coffee and toast greeted them, and Emily was already in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. She glanced up as they entered, her expression softening when she saw their still-tired faces.
"Hey, girls," Emily said warmly, though her tone carried a hint of reproach. "I told you not to make it too late. You both look like you barely slept."
Madelyn exchanged a glance with Sarah before stepping closer to the table. âIt⦠wasnât exactly planned,â she admitted softly, her voice tinged with hesitation.
Emily raised an eyebrow but didnât press further, instead motioning for them to sit first. âAlright, spill. What happened?â
Madelyn hesitated, her fingers tracing the edge of the table. Sarah gave her an encouraging nod, and with a deep breath, Madelyn began recounting the events of the night before. She spoke about the dream, the shadowy figure, the overwhelming emotions that had consumed her, and how she had lost control. Her voice trembled as she described waking up as a fox, thrashing and crying, unable to stop the flood of hopelessness that had taken over.
Emily listened intently, her brow furrowing with concern as Madelyn continued. When Madelyn reached the part about Sarah coming to her rescue and Lyraâs desperate attempts to help, her mom didnât say a word. Instead, as soon as Madelyn finished, Emily stepped forward and wrapped her arms around her daughter.
Madelyn stiffened for a moment before leaning into the embrace, her body trembling slightly. âI just felt⦠so lost,â she whispered, her voice barely audible. âLike everything was too much, and I couldnât breathe. It was like... I was drowning.â
Emily tightened her hold, her voice soft but firm. âOh, sweetheart,â she murmured, stroking Madelynâs fiery red hair. âYouâve been carrying so much, trying to handle it all on your own. Itâs no wonder it became too much.â
Sarah watched quietly, her gaze filled with a mixture of empathy and determination. âSheâs not alone, Mrs. Roth,â Sarah said firmly. âIâll always be here for her.â
Emily pulled back slightly, just enough to look Madelyn in the eyes. âAnd so will we,â she said gently. âYou donât have to do this on your own, Maddy. Weâre in this together, every step of the way. And I will keep repeating that as many times as necessary.â
Madelyn wiped at her eyes, her tail flicking softly behind her. âThanks, Mom,â she said, her voice steadying. âAnd you too, Sarah. I'd be lost without you.â
Emily smiled warmly, brushing a stray tear from Madelynâs cheek. âYouâre stronger than you think, Maddy. But even the strongest people need their support system.â
The room fell into a comfortable silence, the weight of the conversation easing slightly. Emily turned back to the stove, flipping the last piece of toast onto a plate. âAlright, letâs get some food in you two,â she said with a small smile. âYouâll feel better with a good breakfast.â
Madelyn and Sarah exchanged small smiles before sitting down at the table.
As they sat around the table eating their breakfast, the cozy clinking of plates and forks filled the air. Emily sat down with her cup of coffee, glancing at the newspaper in front of her. âDid you two hear the storm last night?â she asked casually, though her tone carried a hint of concern.
Madelyn looked up, her tail flicking lazily behind her chair. âNot really,â she admitted. âI guess I was⦠preoccupied.â
Emily nodded knowingly. âTheyâre saying on the news that it was one of the worst storms weâve had in years. Trees down, power outagesâseems like we were lucky it didnât hit harder here.â
Sarah perked up, her hands wrapped around her mug of tea. âI thought I heard something earlier in the night, but I was out like a light after everything.â
Madelyn smiled faintly. âYou did more than enough, Sarah.â
Emilyâs eyes softened as she looked at the two girls, but the practical side of her quickly kicked in. âWell, the weather cleared up, so the roads should be fine. What about school?â
Madelyn nodded, taking a bite of her toast. The warmth of the food settled her nerves even further. As she finished, she pushed her plate aside and glanced at her mom. âI think weâre good,â she said, her voice steady.
Emily hesitated for a moment, studying Madelyn carefully. âAre you sure youâre up for school today, Maddy?â she asked gently. âAfter a night like that, I wouldnât blame you if you wanted to stay home.â
Madelynâs ears twitched. She gave her mom a reassuring smile. âI feel way better already,â she said. âAnd besides, Sarahâs with me. I have nothing to fear.â
Sarah grinned, nudging her lightly. âDarn right you donât.â
Emily didnât seem entirely convinced, but she relented with a small nod. âAlright, but if you need anythingâanything at allâyou call me, okay?â
âI will,â Madelyn promised, standing up and grabbing her bag. Sarah followed suit, slinging her backpack over one shoulder.
As they both moved to the door, Emily called out, âHave a good day, girls! And stay safe.â
Madelyn glanced back, her tail giving a small, invisible flick of gratitude. âThanks, Mom.â
With Sarah by her side, Madelyn stepped out into the brisk morning air, the weight of the night slowly giving way to the promise of a new day.
