Chapter 57 – The Need for Control
Astralyth Online
Madelyn and Sarah walked side by side, their pace unhurried as they made their way to school. The streets were damp from the previous nightâs storm, the air fresh and cool. As they reached the halfway point, Sarah suddenly reached out and intertwined her hand with Madelyn's.
Madelynâs cheeks flushed immediately, her breath catching in her throat. She didnât pull back, though. Instead, she allowed herself to enjoy the warmth of Sarahâs hand in hers, even as her heart pounded in her chest. If her fox ears and tail werenât hidden by her Human Disguise, theyâd be twitching and wagging like crazy.
âIs this okay?â Sarah asked, glancing at her with a small, playful smile.
Madelyn nodded quickly, her voice barely above a whisper. âYeah, itâs⦠fine.â
Sarah grinned, her steps becoming even lighter. âGood,â she said simply, giving Madelynâs hand a gentle squeeze.
As they continued walking, Madelynâs thoughts began to wander. The comfort of Sarahâs hand in hers helped ease her growing anxiety for school, but a small pang of guilt tugged at her. âI feel bad about leaving Lyra behind,â she admitted softly, glancing at Sarah. âSheâs probably still asleep, but I didnât even check on her this morning. She used so much of her energy last nightâ¦â
Sarahâs smile softened, her thumb brushing lightly against Madelynâs knuckles. âSheâll understand, Maddy. Lyra knows you care about her, and sheâd probably tell you not to worry so much. Besides,â she added with a teasing grin, âsheâll get her turn to scold you when we get back.â
Madelyn let out a small laugh. âYeah, youâre probably right. Still, I shouldâve made sure she was okay before we left.â
Sarah bumped her shoulder playfully. âYou can make it up to her later. Maybe let her boss you around for a bitâitâs her favorite thing to do anyway.â
Madelyn laughed again, the sound light and genuine this time. âThatâs true. Sheâs surprisingly good at it for someone so small.â
The rest of the walk to school was quiet but comfortable. Madelyn found herself relaxing into Sarahâs presence, the physical connection grounding her in a way she hadnât realized she needed. By the time they reached the school gates, the fluttering nerves had been replaced with a soft warmth.
James, Lillian, and David were waiting by their usual spot near the entrance, chatting among themselves. When they spotted Madelyn and Sarah approaching, James raised an eyebrow, noticing their joined hands but wisely choosing not to comment.
âMorning, ladies,â James greeted, his usual easygoing grin in place.
âHey,â Lillian added warmly, her gaze flickering briefly to Madelyn. âHow are you feeling?â
âIâm fine,â Madelyn replied with a small smile. She and Sarah let go of each otherâs hands as they stopped in front of the group, though the faint blush on Madelynâs cheeks lingered. âWe actually wanted to talk to you guys about something.â
David crossed his arms, his expression growing serious. âWhatâs up?â
Madelyn glanced at Sarah, who gave her an encouraging nod. Taking a deep breath, she began recounting the events of the previous night, from the conversation with her father about Astralyth Corporation to the overwhelming emotions that had led to her transformation.
Before she could delve too far into the details, Lillian leaned forward, her voice soft but full of concern. âMaddy, before we go any further... how are you feeling? After everything that happened last night?â
Madelyn blinked, momentarily caught off guard by the question. She glanced down at her hands, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her sweater. âI⦠Iâm better now,â she admitted, though her voice wavered slightly. âIt was a lotâtoo much, honestly. But Sarah was there⦠she helped me through it.â
As she continued, the group listened intently. Lillianâs eyes widened at the mention of the missing people, her hands clasping tightly in front of her. Davidâs brow furrowed in concern, while Jamesâ usual laid-back demeanor shifted to something more focused.
âSo Astralyth Corporation is behind the disappearances?â James asked, his tone sharp.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Madelyn nodded. âThatâs what my dadâs team has discovered. He thinks theyâre connected to⦠well, everything. Including Aeloria.â
Lillianâs voice was soft but resolute. âThatâs awful. But what does it mean for you?â
âIt means Iâm not allowed to log into the game until they know more,â Madelyn admitted, her ears drooping invisibly. âAnd⦠I think you guys should be careful too.â
David nodded thoughtfully. âMakes sense. Weâll have to be smart about this.â
âAgreed,â Lillian said, placing a reassuring hand on Madelynâs arm. âWeâll do whatever we can to help.â
Madelynâs heart swelled at their support. Despite the danger and uncertainty, she knew she wasnât aloneâand that made all the difference.
Lyra stirred, her wings twitching slightly as she blinked herself awake. The warm glow that usually emanated from her body was faint, flickering like a dying ember. She groggily sat up, taking in her surroundings.
The room was quiet, and sunlight streamed through the curtains, casting soft patterns on the walls. She noticed that she was nestled on one of the pillows Madelyn had thrown on the floor the night before, makeshift covers draped over her small form. A faint blush crossed her cheeks as she realized she had completely passed out after expending so much energy.
"Great," Lyra muttered to herself, running a tiny hand through her tousled hair. "Some protector I am."
She fluttered her wings experimentally, feeling a bit of resistance at first, but soon the familiar warmth returned to her core. Slowly, she rose into the air, her flight wobbly as she hovered above the pillow. Looking around, she realized the room was empty. Madelyn was gone, as was Sarah.
âWhereâd they go?â she wondered aloud, her voice carrying a hint of concern.
Lyra zipped around the room, inspecting every corner as if the answer might be hidden there. The faint scent of Madelynâs foxkin aura lingered in the air, but it was mixed with anotherâSarahâs. That calmed Lyra slightly. If Madelyn was with Sarah, she was probably fine.
Still, the events of the previous night weighed heavily on the tiny fairy. She hadnât expected Madelynâs emotional turmoil to manifest in such a powerful and physical way. The transformation into a fox had drained Madelyn, but it had also drained Lyra. She hadnât realized just how much energy sheâd used trying to calm her down.
Lyra sighed, floating toward the window. She peeked out through the glass, catching a glimpse of the world beyond. âMadelyn,â she murmured, her voice soft. âYouâre carrying so much, more than anyone should have to. But Iâll help you.â
She turned back to the room, her tiny hands on her hips as she surveyed the chaos from the night before. The crumpled blankets, the disheveled bed, the faint sense of lingering distressâit all told the story of a restless night.
With a determined nod, Lyra flew to the bedside table and perched there, her wings folded neatly behind her. âAlright, first things first,â she said to herself. âWhen Maddy gets back, sheâs getting a proper lecture about asking for help before things spiral out of control and then leaving me alone. And Sarahââ Lyra paused, a sly smile playing on her lips. ââsheâs definitely up to something.â
A bit later Lyra floated down the stairs, her wings softly humming in the quiet house. With a flick of her tiny hand, the door to the living room eased open, her magic making the gesture seamless. Inside, she found Emily sitting at the dining table, her laptop open, and a cup of tea steaming beside her. The faint sound of typing filled the room as Emily focused on her screen.
Hovering in the doorway for a moment, Lyra debated her approach. She was still a little annoyed that Madelyn had left her behind without so much as a note, and she figured now might be the time to have a proper talk with Emily. After all, there were things about Madelyn that needed explainingâthings Emily might not fully understand.
Lyra cleared her throatâa small, tinkling sound that drew Emilyâs attention. The woman glanced up, her expression softening into a smile when she saw the tiny fairy.
âGood morning, Lyra,â Emily said warmly, sitting back in her chair. âYouâre finally awake. How are you feeling?â
Lyra floated closer, settling onto the edge of the table with a small huff. âBetter, I suppose. Though Iâm not exactly thrilled that Madelyn left without waking me up.â
Emily chuckled softly, taking a sip of her tea. âShe and Sarah had school. She mentioned you were exhausted and didnât want to disturb you.â
âStill,â Lyra said, crossing her arms. âShe couldâve at least said something. After last nightâ¦â She trailed off, her expression shifting from irritation to concern. âThereâs a lot going on with her, more than sheâs letting on.â
Emily closed her laptop gently, giving Lyra her full attention. âI know,â she said softly. âShe told me a bit about her dreams and how overwhelming itâs all been. But I have a feeling thereâs more you want to share.â
Lyra nodded, her wings fluttering as she stood. âMadelynâs emotions, her powersâtheyâre deeply connected. When sheâs overwhelmed, itâs not just a mental or emotional struggle; it affects her physically. That transformation into a fox last night wasnât randomâit was her body reacting to her emotional state. If she doesnât learn to control it, things could get dangerous, extremely dangerous.â
Emilyâs brow furrowed, her hands clasping the mug tightly. âDangerous how?â
âShe could lose herself,â Lyra said bluntly. âHer emotions could take over completely, leaving her trapped in a form she canât control.â
Emilyâs lips pressed into a thin line, worry etched across her face. âHow do we help her?â
âFor now, keep supporting her like youâve been doing,â Lyra said gently. âShe needs to feel safe, loved, and grounded. And as she learns more about her powers, Iâll be here to guide and teach her.â
Emily nodded, her expression softening. âThank you, Lyra. Youâve been such a blessing to herâand to us.â
Lyra smiled, her annoyance from earlier fading. âI care about her, too,â she said softly. âMore than she probably realizes. Weâll get through this.â
Emily reached out, her finger gently brushing Lyraâs tiny hand. âWe will.â
Emily set her mug down with a soft clink, her gaze sharpening as she leaned forward. âLyra,â she began, her voice steady but filled with curiosity, âbesides transforming into a fox, what other powers could Madelyn potentially⦠unleash?â
Lyra tilted her head, her wings fluttering slightly as she considered the question. âQuite literally anything,â the fairy replied, her voice tinged with a mix of awe and concern. âThere isnât really a limit to a Goddessâs powers. Madelynâs potential is vastâitâs tied to her emotions, her connection to the world, and her lineage.â
Emilyâs eyes widened, her earlier suspicions now solidified. She had always sensed that there was something extraordinary about her daughterâs transformation, but this confirmed it. âSheâs⦠sheâs really a Goddess herself,â Emily murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
Lyra nodded firmly. âAfter last night, Iâm certain of it. The way her magic felt when she transformedâit was overwhelming. Even in her current state, where her powers are undeveloped, it was almost impossible for me to calm her down. And compared to someone like Aeloria, you could describe her magic as a babyâs first steps. But the raw potential⦠itâs there, Emily. Itâs undeniable.â
Emilyâs head shot up, her expression shifting from awe to alarm. âWait,â she said quickly, âthat storm last night. Was that⦠was that her?â
Lyra blinked, her tiny hands resting on her hips. âThe storm?â
âThey said on the news this morning that it was the strongest storm in sixteen years,â Emily continued, her voice rising slightly. âIt came out of nowhere. If what youâre saying about her powers being tied to her emotions is trueâ¦â
Lyraâs wings fluttered faster as she connected the dots. âItâs possible,â she admitted. âWhen she transformed, her magic was out of control. It wasnât just localized to herâit reached out, affecting everything around her. A storm like that⦠it would make sense if it was a manifestation of her turmoil.â
Emily leaned back in her chair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The implications were staggering. âIf her emotions alone can cause a storm like that⦠what happens when her powers fully awaken?â
Lyraâs expression turned serious, her usual lighthearted demeanor replaced by a rare gravity. âThatâs why itâs so important for her to learn control. Right now, her powers are tied directly to her feelings. If she doesnât gain mastery over them, the consequences could be⦠catastrophic.â
Emily swallowed hard, her maternal instincts kicking into overdrive. âThen we have to do everything we can to help her. She canât carry this alone.â
Lyra gave a small, reassuring smile. âSheâs lucky to have you and Jack. With your supportâand maybe a little patienceâsheâll find her way.â
Emily nodded, her resolve hardening. âWeâll do whatever it takes. Sheâs our daughter, no matter what. Goddess or not, weâll help her through this.â
Lyra hovered closer, her tiny hand resting lightly on Emilyâs arm. âAnd Iâll be right here with her, every step of the way. Weâll make sure sheâs ready for whatever comes next.â
