The room grew louder with every passing minute as people filed into it and began to locate their seats. I tried to keep the disgusted look off my face as they entered with smiles on their face. How was this fun for them? How could they enjoy watching two creatures, who've done no harm, fight?
It was vile.
"Is everyone ready?" I asked through the pack's mind link.
"Yes, alpha!" Many linked back.
"Good, it's almost time for us to start. We can't afford anyone messing up if we want to get them all out of here. The trucks will be pulling up soon for the rescues to be placed in, so be ready."
There was a chorus of 'Yes sirs', but I remained quiet as I watched more and more people enter. Most smelled human which told me that the man in charge had yet to show up. If we were right, he'd enter right before the first round was about to start and that's when we'd take action. He didn't know we were here yet so the goal was to take him by surprise.
My eyes scanned the room and I saw warriors scattered around as they waited for the signal. It wasn't just our pack that was here either. Due to the large number of people here, we requested help from two other packs in the area. One was stationed outside to stop anybody who managed to escape the building, the other was blended into the crowd like we were.
As the lights dimmed, the crowd began to break out into cheers. I fought back a wince and kept my attention on the arena. We couldn't mess up tonight.
The crowd grew more wild as a door in the back of the arena began to open. Two men came out with leashes in their hands as they held tight grips on the werewolves attached to them.
It's almost time.
The crowd grew louder and some began to chant 'Fight!' over and over. One of the two men raised their hand and the crowd began to quiet down. The men each moved to the sides and slowly, a man approached from behind the door. My eyes narrowed at the sight of him.
It's go time.
I nodded my head once, allowing Alpha Emerson - the leader of the other pack in the room - to know it was time.
"Now!" I linked to my pack members.
The man in the center of the arena's eyes met mine, and I watched as the smile on his face disappeared and was replaced with a frown. Instantly, he turned around and disappeared back through the doors, but I wasn't worried. We had prepared for this.
The crowd let out a confused murmur, some began to yell and try to force the fight to start. Alpha Emerson and I both stood up and eyes turned to us. I raced down the stairs and towards the arena, warriors followed me. In the back, I could hear the shouts from the crowd as Emerson's warriors began to shift and began to round up those in the crowd. It didn't matter if they weren't directly linked with the capture of the wolves, they were just as bad in our books.
When I reached the caged arena, I attempted to yank the flimsy door open. The two men from earlier tried to block the path, but the moment I got the door unlocked, two of my warriors were already on top of them. When the leashes dropped, the two wolves scheduled to fight both looked at each other and began to snarl. They bared their teeth and their bodies tensed.
They began to lunge, but before they could do so, I grabbed one of them, and Indiana - my gamma - grabbed the other.
With the men effectively knocked out, the warrior quickly moved to take the rogue from me and Indiana nodded at the door.
"Go on ahead, we can handle things here!" She called out, over the yelling and growls.
I took one last look at the scene behind me. People were running around, desperately trying to look for a way out but it was futile. Warriors chased them down and dragged them away as they kicked and screamed. In the center, Alpha Emerson stood, leading it all.
I turned back to Indiana and gestured in the direction of the wolves. "Take these two to the van outside."
Indiana nodded and I quickly disappeared behind the door. The sound of growls grew louder the more I walked until I was met face-to-face with cages of wolves. Some whimpered while others growled loudly. My eyes ran down the rows of wolves but stopped when I met a pair of light brown eyes.
The wolf inside was smaller than the others, and its coat was dirtier, but that didn't stop it from letting out a loud growl in my direction. The closer I got to it, the more I could feel my wolf fighting to come forward.
Mate!
I opened my mouth to say something but stopped when I heard the sound of rustling further down. I glanced at the wolf one last time, before turning away.
"I'll come back," I promised it and myself before quickly moving in the direction of where the noise was coming from.
When I got closer, my steps slowed down and my eyes moved slowly and cautiously, examining everything. He's in there somewhere, the question was where?
I stopped walking when more rustling came from the corner. Before I could take another step forward, a black wolf lunged from seemingly out of nowhere and began to attack. Right before we collided, I shifted as well.
Here he was.
A snarl escaped him as he attempted to bite my neck. I growled back, before kicking him off me. He collided with one of the cages, causing the rogue inside to whimper. His eyes darted around the area, seeming to come to the same conclusion I had.
This area was too small to fight.
If we were to continue here, we'd risk harming the wolves and ourselves in the process. It was clear that these cages weren't very stable and one wrong move could send some of them falling.
The wolf's eyes met mine before he quickly turned in the other direction and took off. I began to chase after him, but he didn't manage to get too far before he ran into Stellan, my beta, in his wolf form.
The wolf didn't even get a chance to consider another route before Stellan lunged at him, sending the both of them to the floor. With the wolf pinned below him, Stellan quickly managed to knock him out before he turned back to me and shifted. He glanced down at the wolf before looking around the room.
Wolves stared at us, some were shivering in fear while others were tensed up and ready to fight if they needed to.
"What are we going to do with all of them?" He asked me as he continued to look around the room.
The image of the brown-eyed wolf flooded my mind and I let out a sigh.
"First, let's get them out of this hell hole."
