As the car moved, my eyes darted around. I wanted to get out. I wanted to leave.

"You're going to be okay," A woman told me, trying to calm me down, but ignored her. Instead, I thrashed around the small cage, trying to knock it over—to bust it open—anything to get me out of there.

Where was I going? Was I going to be okay? Where was everyone else?

Questions swarmed my mind and I couldn't help but think of the worst possible outcomes.

"Please, calm down-" the woman tried again.

I growled at her and shot her a glare before returning my attention to trying to get out. Suddenly, the car came to a stop and I held my breath as the door opened. The dark brown-eyed man from earlier stood there and stared at me. His hands gripped the cage I was locked inside of and he carried me into an unknown building. My body tensed up as he walked. There was something there; something that drew my attention to him, but right now that didn't matter.

Where was he taking me?

Was he going to kill me?

As if reading my mind, the man's deep voice rang through my ears. "I'm not going to hurt you."

His words sounded sincere, but it wouldn't have been the first time I was lied to. So instead, I responded with another growl.

The man sighed before opening a door to an empty white room. There was almost nothing inside it. He slowly placed my cage onto the floor and eyed me as if he was thinking about something.

The man turned towards the door and I heard the sound of something clicking before he made his way back towards my cage. He leaned down before opening it.

Instantly, I escaped my small prison and darted around the room, looking for any way to get out of there. The man didn't say anything as he watched my movements.

The more I ran around the room, the more frustrated I grew. The only way out was the door and the window and without shifting, I wouldn't be able to open either of them, and shifting was out of the question.

I hadn't been in my human form in years when I first showed up and the thought of suddenly changing back scared me. After being in my wolf form for so long, I almost didn't want to see what I looked like in my human form.

"You won't be able to get out," the man said, reminding me of his presence.

Well, no shit.

That's what I wanted to say, but instead growling would have to do.

"Are you only ever going to growl?" The man sighed. "If you can, why don't you shift and talk to me? Wouldn't that be easier?"

Not going to happen.

I stared at him blankly and the man frowned. "Am I supposed to just call you 'wolf' then? I don't even know your name, mate."

My body unintentionally shivered at the use of the word mate. Is that what we were? I wasn't stupid, I knew what mates were, but I didn't know if the man was telling the truth or not. I hadn't felt my wolf in over five years and even now, in the presence of my supposed mate, it still didn't come forward.

It didn't matter though. I didn't know this man. For all I know, he could be using that as an excuse to get me to trust him, and then he'd lock me up just like the other man did.

He sighed before standing up and making his way to the door and opening it. His form disappeared but not before I heard the familiar click of the door once again.

Maybe I had made him mad.

The thought caused my body to tense up even more. What would he do when he came back? Was he the same as the other man? Would he harm me?

More and more scenarios ran through my head to the point where I didn't even realize the door had opened once again. The man had returned, but he didn't look mad. Instead, he held a plate in his hand and placed it on the ground a little ways away from me.

"That's for you," he explained, but I didn't believe him.

What was the catch?

Was it poisoned?

Did he drug it?

I eyed the food with suspicion. The man shook his head before he crouched down and picked up a piece of what looked like chicken. My eyes traveled up his form and I watched as he took a bite of it and swallowed it.

"See, there's nothing wrong with it."

I didn't want to eat it, but the hungry feeling in my stomach became much more prominent. My stomach growled and finally, I gave in. I moved closer to the plate and slowly took a bite of the food. The man took a seat on the bed and I could feel his eyes on me.

Creep.

Ignoring him, I continued to eat until the plate was empty. Licking my face clean, I noticed the man was smiling at me. My head tilted in confusion. Why was he smiling like that? Was he planning something?

I glared at him and bared my teeth, but the man's smile didn't waver, instead, it grew to cause me to huff and turn away from him.

The man was strange, there was no doubt about that.

I could hear the sound of him standing up and his feet moving toward the door. When he reached it, he stopped and I could hear him turning around. I didn't bother to turn to look at him.

"Not that you asked," the man started. "But my name is Slater, mate. I hope that one day, you'll tell me yours."

With that, the man left the room leaving me alone with my thoughts.

Why was he so worried about my name? It had been years since anyone used it. If anything, I was more commonly referred to as the omega or mutt.

I turned around and stared at the door for a minute before shaking my head.

The man—Slater—was definitely strange. There was no doubt about it.
