RECAP
Hope gave a questioning look to Alaric. "Why would one monster disguise itself as another monster?" Hope inquired. "The Oneiroi sounds freaky enough." Hope looked at you while you nodded in agreement.
Landon looked at all of us. "Because if we knew what it actually was-" Landon didn't get to finish his sentence.
"We'd know how to stop it." Alaric finished his sentence. Landon looked at Alaric with a 'yes' face. Before Alaric left he spoke up again. "Kate, kiss him for me." He looked at you while you looked at Hope and Landon. Alaric then left with the book.
That was awkward. "I hope he meant cheek and not lips." You looked into Landons eyes while he nodded in agreement. Hope looked down as she wanted to laugh at that comment.
ââââ
"A black-winged what?" Kaleb asked, confused what you just said.
At the same time you all spoke. "Shapeshifting dream demon."
"I know it sounds bad, but now that we know what the creature is, we can fight it." Hope continued. You pulled out your phone to see the time seeing it was 8 o'clock at night and you were freaking tired.
Rafael looked at everyone quickly then back to you 3. "How the hell are we supposed to kill a dream demon?" Rafael inquired.
"Leave that part up to Kate and I." Hope looked at you before looking at everyone else.
You cut in. "But since we can't fall asleep without compromising the location of the urn, we need someone else to pull it out of the dream plane and into our reality." You looked at everyone.
All eyes fell on MG. "So, Freddy Krueger. Like I said." MG looked at Kaleb while Kaleb scoffed.
"Wait, how the hell are we supposed to do that?" Rafael asked.
MG spoke up again. "If it's anything like he movies, we just grab and pull." MG explained, motioning a grabbing and pulling example.
"Yeah, okay. Is it too late to get on the, uh, evacuation bus?" Kaleb asked, obviously not wanting to do this.
You placed your hands on your hips. "No. I mean, We're not gonna ask all of you to stay for this, it has to be your choice." You spoke, earning the attention of everyone in the room.
There was a moment of silence, until Landon got up. "I'm not leaving unless Hope does." It was obvious Landon still had a thing for Hope and it annoyed you and hope but Landon had to get to the fact Hope liked you.
"We already knew the answer to that, so..." Hope mumbled, looking at Landon then you for help while you just slightly shrugged.
Rafael looked around. "I'm not leaving Landon or Kate behind." He then got up.
MG spoke up. "I'm a founding member of the Super Squad, so, I can't bail." MG smile as he got up.
Kaleb looked at everyone in the room. "Y'all gonna get yourselves killed." Everyone looked at him until he sighed. "But if MG stays, I stay." MG had a happy smile on as Kaleb said that. "No child left behind."
Hope looked at everyone besides you. "In the case," She started. "it's nap time."
You and Hope had left the group to allow them to set up the sleeping plan in the gym.
It was now 10pm at night and you were exhausted but had to stay awake. Hope and you walked into Alarics office but found him asleep. You looked at Hope's side profile, until Landon came. "What'd you two do to him?" Landon asked.
You and Hope looked at Landon. "Nothing." You responded as you looked back at Alaric.
"He's so tired, he must've nodded off on his own." Hope continued, looking back at Alaric as Landon moved to stand next to you.
ââââ
You were now in the gym, everyone else doing their own thing while you and Landon spoke. "Landon, I don't think you should do this." You looked up in his soft eyes.
Landon shook his head. "No. Uh-uh." He said, making you confused. "You don't get to ignore me all day, then make decisions for me." He stated.
"You're gonna be inside of a nightmare!" You whisper-shouted to him.
Landon nodded. "Yeah." He simply replied.
"This monster can get inside of your head, use your worst fears against you." You started, speaking about what happened to you. "It's happened to me and it's horrible." You didn't take your eyes off of his.
Landon looked back and forth between your eyes. "Are you kidding?" He questioned. "My biggest fear was fitting in here." He paused, laughing a little. "Now I'm a dream warrior. Plus, I saved the day. Well, I... no, I found the plan that saved the day. You and Hope are the ones that's actually gonna save the day." He stated, looking down. "Which is so cool, by the way." You smiled as he said that. "I'm staying, and I'm gonna help you stop this thing." Landon continued.
You sighed. "I don't know what it's gonna take to stop it." You paused. "But maybe there's one thing that you can do to help Hope and me." You replied to Landon. Landon's eyes glowing up in excitement. You went close to his ears, whispering. "I need you to hide the urn." You moved away from the ear, he nodded and pulled you into a hug, you hugging back. You then backed away from the hug. "Sweet dreams." You looked into his eyes.
You watched as Landon moved away and to the others. Everyone was now lying down asleep and it was now 11pm at night. You and hope walked up to everyone making sure they were asleep. They all looked to be having a nightmare. You walked over to Landon and sat down next to him. Your face softened as you saw his all scrunched up because of the nightmare he as having.
You felt so bad for Landon. "He looks in pain.." You mumbled but loud enough for Hope to hear.
Hope looked over at you but you didn't bother looking up at her. "He isn't.." hope responded. "He's just in a nightmare."
"Isn't a nightmare enough pain, though?" You asked, finally looking up at her.
Hope sighed and sat next to you. "I'm sure he's fine." Hope grabbed your right hand and squeezed it reassuringly. You squeezed back.
"Stay with Landon, please." You got up, letting go of Hope's hand.
Hope was confused but stayed seated. "Why?" She asked.
You sighed. "Cause he'll need someone here when he wakes up." You responded.
Hope scoffed. "That should be you! You have a better connection with him." Hope argued,
"There is no time for arguing, Hope!" You shouted. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to yell but just please stay with him.." You said as you ran out of the gym.
You then heard yelling from Landon, he was calling your name. It broke your heart but now you stood in the hallway, hearing stomping from the monster. The monster had broken a painting that revealed a safe.
He then broke the safe door down but didn't find the urn. You took it as your chance to expose yourself. "Did I tell Landon the wrong hiding place for the urn?" You asked sarcastically. The both of you stared at each other but the monster looked mad. "Oops." Was all you said, then the both of you ran at each other and started fighting.
You threw the monster at the doors of the gym causing the doors to break down but the monster grabbed a hold of you at the moment causing you to get thrown through the doors as well.
"That hurt like a bitch." You groaned as you both got up.
"Pretty much like that." Rafael said, scared. Your were confused but stayed focus. It then opened its wings, everyone was ready to charge at it.
Hope came and stood by your side. "Stay back, guys." Hope yelled. "I got this." She continued, she looked at you. "Back away, Kate." She asked you.
You shook your head. "No." You replied.
She looked at you. "Ad Somnum." Hope casted on you which made you fall into Landon's arms and into a deep sleep.
You woke up after a short while to see the fighting was over. You saw that Landon was holding on the ground, making sure you were safe. You got up and hugged him. "Thank god you're okay." You whispered in the crook of his neck.
"I'm glad you're okay, too." He responded, whispering as well.
Once you two got up, Hope came over. "I'm sorry for casting that spell. I just didn't want you too get hurt." Hope looked back and forth between your eyes.
"I understand, I would've done the same if I was faster at casting the spell."Â You responded and Hope nodded, knowing you would definitely have done it as well. We all walk out of the gym, you and Hope next to each other, Landon to your right, Rafael and MG at the back while Kaleb was on the right. You all then saw Alaric come out from a corner and look at you all.
ââââ
When you opened the door to the girls shower to leave you saw Rafael walk past. "Hey." You said as you shut the door. Rafael turned around. "I'm sure you did a great job tonight."
"Thanks." Rafael said in a monotone voice, turning around to walk off.
You looked at him confused, it seemed he was mad with you. "Are you okay?" You asked. Rafael stopped walking but didn't turn around and didn't respond. "You know, all day it feels like I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop with you." You continued.
Rafael turned around. "You know, uh, when Landon and I first met at Hector and Maria's?" You nodded to his question. "Remember how he told me the story about the guy who lives four towns over and who used to burn him with cigarettes for sport?" He questioned.
"Yeah, I remember that." You responded in a calm voice.
"I felt this crazy need to protect him." He paused. "Even though I knew it wouldn't change anything." He started. "So, one day I took a couple buses, I knocked on his door and I beat the crap out of him." You looked between Rafael eyes but he didn't make eye contact with you.
"I never told Landon about it, either. And I never told you." He paused. "I knew that he wouldn't and you wouldn't want to be a part of something like that. So, what I said earlier about lying, I... I was being a hypocrite. Because when someone is as important as Landon is to me, I'll do what's best for him. Even if that means having to lie." Rafael paused again, looking up at you.
"But I'll also have to protect him from being hurt in other ways, too." Rafael said. What was that suppose to mean? "So, you and I, we can't talk like this anymore." Rafael whispered, as if using a louder voice would shatter the windows.
You gave Rafael a confused look. 'What does he mean by that? Why can't we talk?' That thought lingered in your mind as you watched Rafael walk away.
You then made your way to MG, Kaleb and Landon who were singing, but Kaleb was the one singing, MG was beatboxing, and Landon was playing the guitar. "Never dreamed I'd be the one to be a dream killer. It's like Salvatore's School meets 'Thriller.' It tried to creep up on me, but it was sleeping on me. Couldn't touch it, couldn't put my hand on. And MG is the homie I can land on. His girl Kate, I'm-a always take a chance on. She fought a demon, and I just killed the damn song." You smiled as you watched them get along.
"What?" MG asked, laughing. "No, that's crazy."
Kaleb laughed. "Yeah, yeah, yeah." Kaleb said, looking over at Landon. "Yo, that's nut. Hey, man, you can play." They laughed but then Landon saw you and his smile dropped. You quickly moved away and ran down stairs to the fireplace.
"That was clean. That was clean. Okay, so when did you start playing the guitar?" MG questioned and that was the last thing you heard before you moved away and ran down stairs to the fireplace.
You were just starring at the fire while sitting on the floor. "Kate?" You heard from behind you. You looked backwards to see Landon. "Hey." He whispered lowly.
"Hi." You responded.
Landon sat down next to you and you watched him. "Hey." He looked at the fire, resting his head on his arms as he looked over at you. "SO I have this whole thing I need to say." He looked at the fire then back to you. "Is it cool if I say it?" Landon questioned.
You nodded. "Yeah." You replied, slightly unsure of what he wanted to say.
Silence took over us as he debated where to start. "We've spent most of our life, afraid... and unsure. I mean, even when you guys brought me back here, it didn't get better, it got worse because now I actually had something to lose." He looked at you. That made you realise he was meaning you, he was scared about loosing you. "And it didn't help that it felt like you were... avoiding me, keeping things from me." He trailed off.
Sighing, he continued. "And then I fought a dream demon. A creature who exists literally to make me live out my worst fears, and I thought, 'What have I been so afraid of?' " He paused as his voice cracks. "If you want to change your mind about me being someone you rely on, change your mind." He locked eyes with you. " 'Cause I'm gonna work that much harder to make you change it back." Your eyes started to water as he said that. "If you need to lie to keep dream demons from getting their claws on the urn, lie. If you need to keep secrets because you feel burdened with all the responsibilities no one else can handle, all right then, keep your secrets." Landon paused to catch his breathe.
He then looked back at you. "It is my job to bust my ass until, you see me as someone to confide in." A few tears dropped as he said that. "I'm not gonna be afraid of losing you anymore, Kate." You quickly wiped the tears as he continued talking. " 'Cause I'm gonna be the guy who always fights, to find you again." He looked back and forth between your eyes. "Sorry. I'm done."
You grabbed and pulled him in for a hug. More tears fell as felt him hug back. Both of you sat like that for a while, enjoying the comfort of each other. "I have to go check on Dr.Saltzman, apparently he hurt himself." Your voice cracked a little as you spoke.
Landon nodded. "All right, I'll let you be." Landon smiled up at you as you got up and left.
You walked into Hope on the way to Ric's office. "Hey." She said, when she looked at your face she saw damp tears. "Have you been crying?" She asked, worried.
"Oh, right." You chuckled. "Landon said some heartfelt things to me." You looked over at her. "Nothing else." You smiled while Hope nodded. You realised she held the urn but didn't question it.
Hope knocked on the door as we walked in. Alaric groaned softly as he looked at who it was. "Tweaked your shoulder throwing me that bolt?" Hope questioned, smiling lightly.
"Tweaked my body driving it into a tree, and I think I have a concussion." Alaric held an ice pack on his shoulder. You were kind of glad you missed out on the action.
Hope placed the urn down on the table, Alaric eyes instantly falling on it. "Well, I hope you weren't planning on going to sleep anytime soon." Hope replied.
Alaric looked back at us. "Where did you end up hiding that? In my dream you have a safe tucked away under the floorboards in your closet." Alaric responded.
You cut in. "You know, we couldn't fully decide on a new hiding spot, so we just stashed it under Hope's pillow." You all chuckled at that. "Mm, go figure."
Alaric looked between the both of you. "Well, you were all very smart today, while I fell asleep on the job." Alaric grabbed the ice pack but his face winced in pain as he did it.
Hope looked away from you and to Ric. "You drove halfway across the country in three days, cut yourself some slack." Hope smiled. there was a moment of silence as you guys didn't know what to say. "We need a new plan." Hope looked down at the table then back to Ric. "We can have eighty percent of the students living at the Lockwood Mansion." Hope continued.
"Well," Alaric placed the ice pack on the table. "I'm sure we'll think of something." Alaric replied, looking at the urn.
You both looked at them. "I'm rich?" You asked. Hope looked at you and giggled. "Well, I mean, "I'm guessing I'm rich since you just said 'Lockwood' and Mansion' in the same sentence." You looked between both of them.
Alaric laughed before he spoke up. "You, Kate, come from a very wealthy family but your dad wanted nothing to do with the money believe it or not." Alaric explained.
"I've been alive for seventeen years and yet I never knew of this place." You said, still amazed at the fact you are rich. Alaric and Hope just chuckled as you said that. Hope found it adorable how shocked your were.
