Chapter 100 The Smell of Gunpowder
Elizabeth wanted to get close to Liam, but she almost let out a yelp when she heard Gwynethâs words. She turned to look at Gwyneth, who was dealing with the police, and felt a chill all over her body.
âHow did this bitch find out that Kingsley is behind all this? What if the police find Kingsley, and he rats me outâ¦â
Elizabeth pursed her lips, wanting to step forward and say something to the officers, but her guilty conscience held her back. She did not dare to look at Liam at that moment, let alone the police.
Elizabeth had always wanted to be in the spotlight, but now, she wanted everyone to forget she was there. After thinking about it, she
immediately moved to the corner of the room, trying not to let people notice her.
On the other side of the room, Gwyneth reiterated the conversation between the kidnapper and Kingsley to the police. She told them. everything word for word and imitated the same tone of voice the kidnappers had to bring out the situationâs essence.
The police were a little surprised by the reenactment. Still, they jotted down everything in their notepads because they could not afford to
offend the victims involved.
Liam stood aside the whole time Gwyneth talked to the authorities and never looked away from her. He was truly relieved as he listened to her telling the police everything in such detail because it meant that she did not get injured.
When the captain was leading his men to retreat from the scene, Liam took the opportunity to approach Gwyneth. âCome on. Letâs get you home.â he said. Initially, he wanted to say. âLetâs go home,â but he feared Gwyneth would feel embarrassed in front of many people. In the end, he phrased the sentence differently.
However, before Gwyneth could reply. Hayden suddenly appeared before her. âGwyneth, itâs been long since we last saw each other. You must be hungry after all of that action. May I treat you to dinner tonight?â
Liam gritted his teeth and turned to look at that man when he heard those words. âHow can this dude be so insensitive that he canât take a hint?â He thought.
Hayden frowned and slightly averted his eyes, probably because of Liamâs burning stare. The two men met each otherâs gaze and did not say anything to each other, but there was an obvious tension between them as the smell of gunpowder was still present in the air.
To Liam and Haydenâs surprise, Gwyneth ignored the two of them. She turned around, walked toward Wanda, and put her arms around the girlâs shoulders. It was clear that she was startled by the whole incident.
Although Wanda displayed strength and courage when confronting the kidnappers earlier, it was hard not to be affected when she was at gunpoint. Now that everything was over, panic and fear swept over her. It was as if her emotions were going to consume her.
Gwynethâs heart ached for Wanda as she saw her trembling uncontrollably, her cheeks pale.
âIâll take my secretary home. You two should go about your day,â said Gwyneth, not trying to be standoffish with the men.
On the one hand, she was really concerned about Wanda. She planned to send her home and call a private doctor to conduct a thorough diagnosis. On the other hand, she hated having tedious entanglements with two men. It bored her.
Liam and Hayden, who were looking at each other coldly, slumped their shoulders in an instant after hearing what Gwyneth had said. Although disappointed, they could not deny that Wandaâs wellâbeing was more important.
Liam lowered his head, touched his nose, and took a step back. His actions were meant to let Gwyneth see that he respected her opinion and did not want to force himself upon her. After all, even though Gwyneth was going to send Wanda home, she would still have to return. to the villa.
Seeing this, Gwyneth rolled her eyes at Liam with a face full of disgust, but she could not help but giggle to herself. She held Wanda in her arms and was about to walk toward the warehouse doorway when Wanda suddenly stopped.
âWhatâs wrong? Is something the matter?â Gwyneth moved slightly and looked at Wanda, only to find her staring at Hayden. Gwynethâs heart skipped a beat at that realization, and she immediately thought of the conversation they had in the underground parking lot after the auction.
Gwyneth noticed the way Hayden gazed upon Wanda was by no means the first time they met. It seemed more like a reunion of old friends. Gwyneth hesitated for a moment and let go of Wanda. âYou can let me in on what you wanted to tell me earlier, Wanda,â she said
Wanda picked at her fingers and lowered her head as she heard that, her eyes still red. âIâve always wanted to tell you the truth, Ms. Glen.
But there was never the right time.â
Hearing this, Gwyneth felt a little uneasy and frowned.
