Chapter 35 A Jerk with Zero Taste
Gwyneth glanced at her friendâs selfâsatisfled expression and grinned, lifting her glass. The two of them clinked their glasses together, their laughter blending into the vibrant buzz of the bar.
âYou know, this is the first time weâve seen each other since you took over Glen Corporation. So, congratulations to you,â Aubrey said, her raised eyebrows conveying a playful tone influenced by the alcohol. Both of them wore a slightly dazed look, their cheeks flushed.
âI believe thereâs something else worthy of congratulations, aside from the Glen Corporation acquisition, Gwyneth remarked, lightly running her fingertip along the rim of her glass. A smirk danced at the corner of her mouth, hinting at a mix of emotions. However, in the dim lighting. Aubrey remained oblivious to Gwynethâs inner conflict.
âOh! Right, right! How could I forget? Congratulations on reclaiming your lifestyle,â Aubrey exclaimed. Initially, Aubrey had intended to congratulate Gwyneth on her newfound singlehood. But given the present circumstances, she had to amend her words.
Gwynethâs smile waned, her thoughts occupying her more than words. âItâs the same old deal. Iâve survived three years, canât I handle three more months?â As she contemplated, Liamâs lace flickered in her mind, creasing her brows.
Just as Gwyneth reached for her glass, Aubrey abruptly slammed the table, jolting her.
âWhatâs happening?â Gwyneth pondered. âWe havenât even finished this bottle of wine. She couldnât possibly be drunk, could she?â
âGirl, let me tell you, that Liam Luther is nothing but a jerk!â Aubrey exclaimed.
Gwyneth breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that she hadnât taken a sip of her drink just moments ago, or she would have surely spat it out.
âAnd you know whatâs even worse? He has zero taste!â Aubrey ranted.
Gwyneth chuckled inwardly, thinking. âItâs amusing, but I canât deny it.â Gathering her thoughts, she spoke up, âHonestly, if I didnât feel obligated to repay his grandfatherâs favor, I would gladly embrace the single life forever.â As she uttered those words, Gwyneth narrowed her eyes, gazing at the vibrant lights surrounding her, her lips forming a faint smile.
However, that smile didnât quite reach her eyes.
Under normal circumstances, Gwyneth wouldnât find herself drawn to such lively places. However, her emotions were driving her tonight.
Gwyneth couldnât deny that Elizabeth, that pretentious woman, had her own set of skills. She couldnât help but imagine Elizabeth was probably enjoying herself with Liam at the Luther residence. As this thought crossed her mind, the phone rang once more. Gwynethâs eyes darted to the caller ID, and she moistened her lips.
But her reflexes acted quicker than her rationality. Before she could think twice, she had already answered the call, and the deep voice of a man resonated in her ear. âWhere are you? Iâll come to pick you up.â
No one had ever dared to ignore Liam Lutherâs phone calls, let alone make him call twice after being rejected. Hence, Liam was not in the best mood at the moment. Yet, deep down, he also felt a glimmer of joy when Gwyneth finally answered the call.
âWhy do you want to pick me up? What? Your girl isnât giving you enough attention anymore?â Gwyneth spoke the words, a departure from her usual indifference. However, she was seething inside, furious that Llam hadnât shown even a hint of stopping her from leaving the Luther residence.
The clamor of the bar seeped into Liamâs ears, deepening his frown. He was about to respond when a loud crash sounded from the other end of the line.
âGwyneth!â he shouted, but there was no response. Then, a dial tone resounded through the phone. In that instant, Liamâs eyes turned bloodshot. He clenched his fist tightly, started the carâs engine, and hastily dialed Henryâs number.
Meanwhile, inside the bar, Gwyneth embraced Aubrey as she approached, a mixture of laughter and tears bubbling up inside her. She had been in the middle of a conversation with Liam when Aubrey unexpectedly jumped onto her, unintentionally causing Gwyneth to lose grip of her phone, which fell and landed on the ground.
âDarling, are you feeling a little off today?â Gwyneth asked.
âWhat? Donât you want to spend some extra time cuddling with me instead of chatting with that jerk?â Aubrey teased, playfully planting a kiss on Gwynethâs cheek before bursting into laughter.
Outside the Munroe residence, Henry came out wearing casual clothes and got into Liamâs car without saying a word.
âWhatâs going on?â Henry asked.
âDidnât you tell me before that you have a way to track a phoneâs precise location? Find out where Gwyneth is,â Liam said.
âAre you serious? I mean, you two, are you really playing these games now?â Henry chuckled, but his laughter faded when he encountered Liamâs glare. He swiftly regained his composure, contacted his subordinates, and promptly initiated the tracking process.
Half an hour later, Liamâs car pulled up outside the Ante Bar, where Gwyneth was located.
âAnte Bar? Itâs a new place?â Henry remarked, glancing up at the sign. Meanwhile, Liam marched straight in without hesitation.
Even amid the bustling crowd, he immediately spotted Gwyneth in a secluded corner. And, unsurprisingly, she was embracing someone in her arms.
