Chapter 2

Dragon's Heir

Blood of the Dragon[on Hold]

Kings Landing

Viserys and Aemmas chambers

Aemma Arryn, the lady married to Prince Viserys Targaryen, was in her room. She smiled as she massaged her swollen belly.

"One day, very soon, I will hold you in my arms and shower you with love as only a mother could." Aemma said. "You'll hunt and ride on your dragon."

"How is my little dragon?" Viserys asked as he entered the room.

Aemma chuckled. "Busy. He's been kicking all day."

"Perhaps he's ready to come out." Viserys said.

Aemma laughed. "Well, the maester said that he should be ready to come any day now."

Viserys put his hands on Aemmas belly. "I can't wait to meet him."

"What if we have a girl?" Aemma asked.

"Then she will be loved and adored by both of her parents." Viserys said. Suddenly, Aemma winced in pain. "Are you alright, my love?" The young prince asked.

Aemma looked down and saw a wet puddle on the floor. "Viserys, the baby is coming."

A few minutes later, Aemma was moved to a birthing room and was surrounded by handmaidens and the Grandmaester.

"You have to push, my lady!" The Grandmaester urged.

"Guaaahh!" Aemma screamed and shot her head back. She then looked at her handmaidens. "Please let my child live. I can't lose another one. Exchange my child's life for mine if you must."

"Shhh. Take deep breaths, my lady." The handmaiden urged.

"Arghh!" Aemma pushed again when she felt a contraction hit her.

"One more push, my lady." The Grandmaester said. "I can see the head."

"Huaahhh!" Aemma screamed loudly, and she felt something slip out of her.

"Wahhhh! Wahhhh! Wahhh!" A loud cry filled the room.

"A boy, my lady." The Grandmaester said after cleaning the baby.

"Praise the mother." A handmaiden said.

"Give to me. Let me hold him." Aemma said. The Grandmaester immediately gave the babe to Aemma. She started shedding tears of joy. "You're here. You're finally here."

Just then, Viserys entered the room. "My love?" He called out.

"I'm fine. We're both fine." Aemma said. "This is your papa." She told the babe. Aemma looked at her husband. "I want to call him Rhaegon."

Even though Viserys wanted to name his son after the conquerer, Aegon, he didn't care in this moment. His son was here, and his wife was happy. Prince Baelon Targaryen entered the room.

"What happy news this day!" He beamed with pride. "Where is my grandchild?"

"Grandson, father." Viserys corrected Baelon.

"A boy." Baelon laughed. "I'm proud of you both."

"Thank you, my prince." Aemma said.

"Shouldn't you be asleep?" Baelon asked.

"I should, but I can't stop looking at him. He's perfect." Aemma said.

"He'll be a great warrior. The greatest in the realm." Baelon praised. His face then fell.

"What's wrong, Father?" Viserys asked.

"Nothing. I just wish your mother were here." Baelon said. "She'd be so proud of you, my son."

"Thank you, Father. His name is Rhaegon." Viserys said.

"Ah. I was so excited I forgot to ask his name." Baelon said. He then looked at the babe. Rhaegon Targaryen. "What a fine warrior you will be."

6 years later

"Can she go faster, Grandpa?" A 6 year old Rhaegon asked as Prince Baelon the Brave took him for a flight on his dragon, the monstrous queen Vhagar.

"There's only one way to find out. Go faster, Vhagar!" Baelon commanded, and the Queens of all dragons did what she was told.

"Whaaahooo!" The little boy exclaimed. He loved it when his grandfather took him on a flight since his egg still did not hatch.

They had flown for 2 hours, and Baelon didn't voice it, but he did not feel well. "I'm glad we got to fly together, my grandson." Baelon loved the boy with all his heart and would always make time for him. They finally landed and were in a wheelhouse carriage on the way back to the Red Keep.

"I like it when we fly on Vhagar too, Grandpa. Maybe we can fly again on the morrow." Rhaegon excitedly said.

"You will have to ask your father, my boy." Baelon said.

"Father will do what you tell him. You're the hand and soon to be king, grandsire." Rhaegon said, and Baelon laughed. As he was laughing, he felt some pain in his abdomen. "Are you alright, grandsire?" Rhaegon asked.

"I'm fine. I'm fine, I just need rest." Baelon said and saw Ser Harrold. "Ser Harrold, please take Rhaegon to his parents."

"I have training with Uncle Daemon." Rhaegon said.

"Ah, yes. How forgetful of me. Take him to the training yard." Baelon said.

"Yes, my lord Hand. Come, my prince." Ser Harrold said and took Rhaegon to training yard.

Training yard

Rhaegon was sparring against a straw dummy while his uncle Daemon watched.

"You're swinging too wildly." Daemon said. "Your foot placement is weak."

"How can I fix it, uncle?" Rhaegon asked.

"Let me show you." Daemon lightly kicked Rhaegon feet apart. "This is where your power comes from. Now swing as if your life depends on it." Rhaegon started swinging again, and he was doing much better than before, but Daemon noticed something else. "Stop looking down. Your enemy is in front of you."

"Of course." Rhaegon said. He then stopped swinging and looked at Daemon. "Can I go flying with you later?" He asked.

Daemon laughed. "You just came from flying."

"I know, but I love flying, and my dragons egg has not hatched yet." Rhaegon said.

"It will hatch. Just give it time." Daemon said. Just then, Ser Harrold walked to Daemon and whispered something in his ear. "What?! How?!" Daemon angrily asked.

"I don't know, my prince." Ser Harrold said. "He was found in the Tower of the Hand."

"Take my nephew to his parents. I'll talk to my grandsire." Daemon said.

"Yes, my prince." Ser Harrold said and took Rhaegon to his parents.

Viserys and Aemmas chambers

Aemma couldn't believe the news that she and her husband had received. Prince Baelon Targaryen had just passed away.

"Mother!" Rhaegon ran to Aemma and hugged her. "What's wrong? He asked. You look sad."

"Sit down, my son." Aemma told Rhaegaon. "You as well, Rhaenyra." She told her 3 year old daughter. "Your grandsire, Baelon, is no longer with us."

"Where did he go?" Rhaegon asked. Aemma couldn't find the words to explain to her children that their grandfather was dead.

"He's gone to a better place, and we will join him someday." Aemma said.

"Grandpa gone." Rhaenyra said, and she started tearing up. Rhaegon immediately hugged her.

"I'm sorry, sister. I promise that I will never leave." Rhaegon said.

A few days later

The royal family and council members were putting Prince Baelon to rest. King Jaehaerys Targaryen couldn't believe that his son was dead. This gave him to reflect on what a bad father he has been.

Rhaegon held his sisters hand the entire time. Even for a 3 year old, Rhaenyra could still understand that her grandfather was not coming back. Rhaegon himself was torn. His grandfather was his best friend, and now he was gone.

Jaehaerys looked at his dragon Vermithor. "Dracarys." The old king commanded, and Vermithor set the pyre on fire. A few days after the funeral, King Jaehaerys was in his room. He had a lot in his mind, and his thoughts were interrupted by a knock in the door. "Come." He said, and Rhaegon entered the room.

"Apologies for the intrusion, great-grandsire, I thought perhaps we could play." Rhaegon said. Jaehaerys said nothing. "Or perhaps we could just sit here, and when you're ready, you can talk to me."

"That's very kind of you, Rhaegon." Jaehaerys said. The old king then sighed. "I want you to remember something, boy. Family comes first. Learn from my mistakes."

"Mistakes. You've ruled the realm for many years with peace." Rhaegon said.

"And it cost me my family." Jaehaerys said. "Promise me that you'll learn from my faults."

"I promise, your grace." Rhaegon said. "Should I leave?" He asked.

"No. Please stay for a little while." Jaehaerys said.

"Of course." Rhaegon said. They talked for a while, and Rhaegon helped the king to his bed.

"As the first century of the Targaryen dynasty came to a close The health of the Old King, Jaehaerys, was failing. In those days, House Targaryen stood at the height of its strength with ten adult dragons under its yoke. No power in the world could stand against it. King Jaehaerys reigned over nearly sixty years of peace and prosperity, but tragedy had claimed both his sons, leaving his succession in doubt. So, in the year one hundred and one, The Old King called a Great Council to choose an heir. Over a thousand lords made the journey to Harrenhal. Fourteen succession claims were heard, but only two were truly considered. Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, the king's eldest descendant and her younger cousin, Prince Viserys Targaryen The King's eldest male descendant." Rhaegon said.

Two men walked in with a case containing a letter.' "It is declared by all lords paramount and lords vassal of the Seven Kingdoms That Prince Viserys Targaryen be made Prince of Dragonstone!"

The coutiers cheered. "Rhaenys, a woman, would not inherit the Iron Throne. The lords instead chose Viserys ... my father. Jaehaerys called the Great Council to prevent a war from being fought over his succession. For he knew the cold truth. The only thing that could tear down the House of the Dragon was itself..." Rhaegon knew that this day would change everything.

4 years later

Above the clouds, a dragon was seen. It was Crimson red with a black belly. This was the dragon Slyrak, dragon of Rhaegon Targaryen. A few days after King Jaehaerys passed away, the egg hatched, and Rhaegon had finally got a dragon.

"Faster Slyrak!" A 10 year old Rhaegon commanded. The dragon immediately picked up speed, and Rhaegon enjoyed every second of it. Slyrak had already grown big for his age.

They finally landed, and when Rhaegon climbed off his dragon, he turned to see his mother.

"How many times have I told you that you're not to fly without informing us?" Aemma asked.

"I'm sorry, mother, but I was done with my lessons, and Slyrak begged me to go, so there wasn't time to tell you." Rhaegon said, and Slyrak growled at him.

"I don't need a translator to tell me that you're lying." Aemma said.

Rhaegon looked at Slyrak. "Thanks for nothing." The dragonkeepers then directed Slyrak to the dragonpit. "Perhaps I should let Rhaenyra fly with me?"

"Perhaps on the morrow, but your father has been looking for you." Aemma said.

"Am I in trouble?" Rhaegon asked.

Aemma chuckled. She then knelt down to hee sons level. "You truly are a trouble maker. Go see your father, he'll explain it better than I."

"I will, mother." Rhaegon said.

A few minutes later

Balerions shrine

Rhaegon was escorted by Lord commander Ryam to the shrine of Balerion The Black Dread, his mother told him that his father wanted to talk to him about something important and that he needed to take it seriously, which he did, or at least as serious as a 10 year old boy could take it.

"Father?" He called out

"Balerion was the last living creature to have seen Old Valyria, before the doom, it's greatness and his flaws." Viserys said and looked at his son. "When you look at the dragons, what do you see?" He asked.

"What? Forgive me, father, but I thought I was in trouble. I thought I'm to be punished for my actions, or that's at least what Mother made it seem like. Isn't that why you had a Kingsguard esc-" He tried to explain but was cut off.

"Answer me, son, it's important. What do you see?" He asked more sternly.

Rhaegon swallowed thickly and then looked at the skull of Balerion and then at his father. "I suppose I see us." He said.

"Tell me." Viserys said, wanting to understand what Rhaegon meant.

"Everyone says Targaryens are closer to gods than to men, but I believe that they say that because of our dragons. Without them, we're just like everyone else." Rhaegon explained.

Viserys smiled with pride. He always knew that his son was smart. "The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. They're power man should never have trifled with, one that brought Valyria its doom. If we don't mind our own histories, it will do the same to us." The king explained. "A Targaryen must understand this when he is heir,... and when he is king." Viserys said, and Rhaegon looked at his father in shock, he wasnt being punished. He was officially being named as his father's successor. "I'm sorry, my son. I have wasted the years, waiting for you to mature." He chuckled. "When all I needed was to give you a chance to prove yourself. You are my pride, my first-born. The very best of your mother."

"Thank you, Father." He said.

"I've spoken to your mother, and I believe, just as I know she does, that you will make a great ruling king. No one is more suited than you are, my son. I'll make sure of that, but know that this is no trivial gesture, Rhaegon, a dragons saddle, is one thing, but the Iron Throne is the most dangerous seat in the realm." Viserys said. He then sighed. "There's something else that I need to tell you. It might be difficult for you to understand now, but you must hear it. Our histories, they tell us that Aegon looked across the Blackwater from Dragonstone, and saw a rich land ripe for capture, but ambition alone is not what drove Aegon to conquest, it was a dream, and just as Daenys foresaw the end of Valyria, Aegon foresaw the end of the world of men." Viserys sighed again. "'Tis to begin with a terrible winter, gusting out of the distant North." He said, and Rhaegon looked scared. "Aegon saw abslute darkness riding on those winds, and whatever dwells within will destroy the world of the living." He walked closer to Rhaegon. "When this great winter comes, my son, all of Westeros must stand against it, and if the world of men is to survive, a Targaryen must be seated on the Iron Throne, a king strong enough to unite the realm against the cold and the dark, Aegon called his dream 'the Song of Ice and Fire'." Viserys gripped the handle of his dagger. "This secret has been passed down from king to heir since Aegons time, now you must promise to carry it, and protect it."Promise me, Rhaegon. Promise me." He pleaded.

"I promise father." Rhaegon said.

"Good, you will be named my heir in two days  the whole court must pledge fealty to you." Viserys told his son.

Two days later

Rhaegons chambers

"I need to make sure you're not dirty at all." Aemma said. She was getting Rhaegon ready, for today is the day that he would officially be named as heir to the Iron Throne.

"I didn't play outside today. Father had me as a cupbearer in the council." Rhaegon said.

"Good, but I just need to make sure." She said and looked at her son. A tear left her eye. "I'm so proud of you, and you look so handsome."

The boy blushed, and they made their way to the throne room

Throne room

The throne room was filled with lords and ladies of the realm, and a had come to pledge fealty to Prince Rhaegon Targaryen as Prince of Dragonstone and Heir to the Iron Throne. Grandmaester Mellos started the announcements.

"Corlys of House Velaryon, lord of the tides and master of Driftmark." He called out.

Corlys stepped forward and bent the knee. "I, Corlys Velaryon, Lord of the tides and master of Driftmark, promise to be faithful to King Viserys and his named heir, the Prince Rhaegon. I pledge fealty to them and shall defend them against all enemies, in good faith and without deceit. I swear this by the old gods and the new."

"Hobert Hightower of House Hightower, beacon of the south, defender of the Citadel, and voice of Oldtown." Mellos called out Lord Hobert

"I, Hobert Hightower of House Hightower, beacon of the south, defender of the Citadel, and voice of Oldtown, promise to be faithful to King Viserys and his named heir, the Prince Rhaegon, I pledge fealty to them and shall defend them against all enemies, in good faith and without deceit. I swear this by the old gods and the new."

One by one, the lords bent the knee and swore fealty. When they were done, Rhaegon turned to his father, who sat on the Iron Throne. Rhaegon bowed his head and looked up at his father again. Viserys stood up.

"I, Viserys Targaryen, first of my name, King of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, do hereby name Rhaegon Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone and Heir to the Iron Throne." Viserys declared, and everyone bowed their heads to him, including Rhaegon.

Rhaegon then turned to the court. He couldn't tell why, but he had a feeling that everything was about to change from here, not just him being heir but everything. He then looked at his sister Rhaenyra and smiled as if he could face anything as long as she was by his side.
