The Return
Blood of the Dragon[on Hold]
Pentos
8 years later
Rhaegon had entered a tavern. At the age of 18, he was already lean and strong. He wasn't wearing any Targaryen colors or any clothing that made him look like royalty. Instead, he wore clothes that made him look as if he were a commoner.
"Good day, noble lords." Rhaegon greeted the two men who were drinking.
"Good day to you." One man greeted.
"The weather seems hot today. I could use a drink." Rhaegon said.
"Try some arbor gold. It's like nothing you've ever had." The other man said.
"Well then, I'll have some arbor gold." Rhaegon said, and the barkeep poured some wine for Rhaegon.
"What do you think?" The man asked Rhaegon.
"You're right. It's the best." Rhaegon said. He then turned to face the men. "What brings you both to Pentos?"
"The wine. I'm a wine farmer." The first man said and laughed.
"I'm a soldier. I have been all my life." The second man said. "I go where the road takes me. I recently visited Westeros."
"Ah, I'm from Westeros." Rhaegon said.
"Where in Westeros?" The second man asked.
"The best place to be. The capital." Rhaegon rose from his seat and sat with the two men. "I heard a tale of this man terrorizing the Stepstones. He feeds his victims to crabs. He then raised his cup, and the two men did the same. I was looking for two men who might know where he is. One was a wine farmer." He toasted to the wine farmer. He then looked at the soldier. "The other was a soldier." Rhaegon toasted to him as well. The three men looked at each other as they drank their wine. Suddenly, the soldier unsheathed his dagger and attempted to stab Rhaegon, but Rhaegon easily disarmed him. Rhaegon then read the carvings on the dagger. "Blood and Honor." Rhaegon read. He then looked at the soldier. "Which would you like to shed first?"
"I'm not telling you anything!" The man spat.
"So blood then." Before anyone could react, Rhaegon stabbed the soldier in this neck. Before the wine farmer could run, Rhaegon threw the dagger in his chest, and it instantly killed him. Rhaegon then walked to the barkeep.
"Please. All they do is drink wine here." He said.
"I've seen them enter with many men, women, and children, but I've never seen them leave." Rhaegon said. "I wonder what happened to those people that were brought in but never left."
"Please. I'll tell you anything. Just please spare me." The man begged.
"Tell me what you know, and I'll consider letting you live." Rhaegon said. The man started talking, and Rhaegon was horrified by everything this Craghas Drahar had done. "Remember when I said that I would consider letting you live. I've made my decision." Without hesitation, Rhaegon stabbed the man through his chest. He then left the tavern.
Kings Landing
Rhaenyra had just finished her flight and was on her way to see her mother. She was accompanied by her best friend Alicent Hightower.
"Ah, Rhaenyra." Aemma greeted. "You know I don't like when you flying while I'm in this condition."
"You don't like me to go flying when you're in any condition." Rhaenyra said.
"Your grace." Alicent greeted.
"Good morrow, Alicent." Aemma greeted back.
"Did you sleep?" Rhaenyra asked as she sat down next to her mother.
"I did." Aemma said.
"For how long?" Rhaenyra asked.
"I don't need mothering, Rhaenyra." Aemma said.
"Well, here you are, surrounded by attendants, all focused on the babe. Someone needs to attend to you." Rhaenyra pointed out.
Aemma tapped her daughters leg with her foot. "You will lie in this bed, Rhaenyra. As will Rhaegons wife. We have royal wombs. This discomfort is how we serve the realm."
"I'd rather serve as a knight and ride to battle in glory." Rhaenyra said. She then looked at her mother with sadness. "Have you received word from Rhaegon?" She asked.
"It's been 3 months since his last letter." Aemma said. "I don't know if that's good or bad."
"I'm worried about him." Rhaenyra said. Rhaenyra had developed feelings for her brother. Feelings that a sister should not have for her brother, but she couldn't escape it.
"As am I, my child." Aemma sighed. "You should go to the small council, but take a bath. You stink of dragon." Rhaenyra chuckled and left the room.
Small council chambers
"So then I said to him, well you might be looking up at the wrong end." Viserys said and started laughing, and some members of the council joined him as well.
Corlys rolled his eyes. "My Lords, the growing alliance among the Free Cities has taken to styling itself the Triarchy." He got up and unrolled a map. "They've massed on Bloodstone and are presently ridding the Stepstones of its pirate infestation." Corlys said.
"Well, that sounds suspiciously like good news, Lord Corlys." Viserys pointed out.
"A man called Craghas Drahar has styled himself the prince-admiral of this Triarchy, they call him 'The Crabfeeder' due to his inventive ways of punishing his enemies." Corlys said, and just then, Rhaenyra walked in.
"Are we meant to weep for dead pirates?" Viserys asked.
"No, your grace." Corlys answered.
Viserys noticed Rhaenyra entered. "Rhaenyra, you're late. The King's cupbearer must not be late, it leave people wanting for cups." The king said.
"I was visiting Mother." She said and kissed the king on the cheek.
Viserys sniffed her. "On dragonback?" He asked.
Lord Lyman, the master of coin, spoke up. "Your grace, at Prince Daemon's urging, the crown had invested significant capital in the re-training and re-equipping of his City Watch. I thought you might urge your brother to fill his seat on the council and provide his progress as commander of the Watch." He said, and Otto nodded his head in agreement.
"Do you think Daemon is distracted by his present tasks and that his thoughts and energies are occupied?" Viserys asked.
"Well, one would hope so, considering the associated costs." Lyman answered.
"Then let us all consider your gold well-invested, Lord Beesbury." Viserys said.
Corlys interrupted them. "I would urge that you not allow this Triarchy much latitude in the Stepstones, your grace. If those shipping lanes fall, it will beggar our ports."
"The crown had heard your report, Lord Corlys, and takes it under advisement. Otto said, and Corlys looked at the king, and he said nothing. "Shall we discuss the princes' tournament, your grace?" He asked.
Suddenly, the doors opened, and Rhaegon entered with a box. "I personally think that we should focus on the Crabfeeder."
"My son!" Viserys happily greeted. Even though Rhaegon was meant to be touring the realm in search of a wife, the King didn't care. His son was home after being away for a year. "Welcome home."
"Not the welcome I was expecting. Otto dismisses the obvious problems as always." Rhaegon said.
"My prince, I only meant -" Rhaegon cut Otto off.
"I don't care what you meant." Rhaegon walked to Otto and put the box in front of him. "I only care about this. Go on open it. Otto carefully opened the box and saw 3 severed heads. It took me a few months to find them and an hour to remove their heads."
"What is the meaning of this, Rhaegon?" Viserys asked.
"A year ago, I told you that we had spies in the capital, and you dismissed it. You were more worried about me marrying, so I took the advantage." Rhaegon said. "These men of lieutenants for Craghas Drahar."
"You've declared war on the Crabfeeder, my prince." Otto said.
"A war he started. I will do whatever I have to to protect the ones I love." Rhaegon looked at Rhaenyra. "Without question." He then looked at Otto. "We're going to be here for a while, and we're not going to talk about a fucking babe's tournament." Rhaegon then sat down on his chair.
Rhaenyra fought the urge to hug her brother right there. For now she was happy that he was home.
Corlys Velaryon couldn't hold back his smirk. He loved seeing Otto put in place, and he also respected that it was the crown prince who did it.
A few hours later after the meeting Rhaenyra was finally alone with her brother in the small council chambers. She rushed to him and hugged him.
"I missed you!" She said.
"I missed you as well." Rhaegon said. "I have something for you." He presented a chain to her.
"Valyrian steel?" Rhaenyra inquired. "Like father's Blackfyre and uncles Dark Sister."
"I had it made for you." Rhaegon said. "Turn around." Rhaenyra blushed and did what she was told. She then moved her hair aside and Rhaegon put the chain around her neck. She then let her hair down and turned to face Rhaegon. "Beautiful."
"Were you with other women while you were away?" Rhaenyra asked.
Rhaegon smirked. "If I say yes, will you be angry?"
"No. I'd like to be experienced for when we eventually..." Rhaenyra didn't know how to finish that sentence.
"I assure you, I'm well educated in the art of pleasing a woman." Rhaegon said. "Perhaps when you're older, you and I could try." Rhaenyra blushed. "I have to see mother, but I'll see you tonight for supper." He then kissed her on the cheek and left.
Viserys and Aemmas chambers
"I'm glad you're home, my son." Aemma said.
"I'm glad to be home, mother." Rhaegon said. "Although I'm surprised to find that you are with child again."
"Your father and I decided to try again. I didn't really want to, but the realm needs to be better defended against those who would challenge us." Aemma said. I heard you made quite the entrance in the small council.
"I needed everyone, including father to understand how serious I am." Rhaegon said.
"And were you successful?" Aemma asked.
"Not as much as I wanted to be. I was talking to a bunch of idiots." Rhaegon said. "Sometimes I wonder if the realm would've been better of Rhaenys were Queen of the Seven Kingdoms instead."
"You're questioning the Great Council?" Aemma asked.
"I do, but not because I'm upset. It's simply because father is a weak king." Rhaegon said. "Make no mistake, I love him, but he's not a king."
"The realm wouldn't have a woman rule the Seven Kingdoms, just as I don't sit on the council." Aemma said.
"That's something I would change once I'm King." Rhaegon said.
"I'm sure your wife would love that, if you ever marry." Aemma said.
"I'd even have Rhaenyra sit on the council." Rhaegon said.
Aemma chuckled. "Will Rhaenyra be sitting as a princess, or as your queen?" She asked.
"So you know?" Rhaegon inquired.
"There's very few things that you can hide from me, my son. This isn't one of them." Aemma said.
"I tried. I tried to ignore my feelings for her. She's only 14 and yet I see myself with her. Is that wrong of me?" Rhaegon asked.
Aemma put her hand on her son's. "I would never tell anyone whom to love. I love your father with all my heart, and if someone told me that I couldn't...well I don't know what I would do."
"So you're saying that I could take her to wife?" Rhaegon asked.
"I know that telling you otherwise would be futile." Aemma said. "Wait till she's older before you wed."
"I will, mother." Rhaegon said.
Godswood
Did you read it?" Alicent asked as the two girls were sitting by the weirwood tree, Alicent was holding a book while Rhaenyra laid on her lap. Rhaenyra told her friend about her feelings for her brothers and needed her advice on whomever to choose.
"Of course I read it." Rhaenyra answered.
Alicent sighed and decided to test her. "When Princess Nymeria arrived in Dorne, who did she take to husband?" She asked.
"A man." Rhaenyra simply answered.
"What was his name?" Alicent rolled her eyes
"Lord something." Rhaenyra was playing around at this point.
"If you answer with lord something, Septa Marlow will be furious". Alicent reminded her.
"She's funny when she's furious." Rhaenyra sighed. "Can we talk about something else?" She asked.
"There's only one thing that you wish to talk about is Rhaegon." Alicent said. Alicent herself had developed feelings for Rhaegon, but she couldn't tell Rhaenyra for it would be a betrayal for their friendship.
"He's so handsome, you should've seen how he stood up to my father, he will make a great king one day." She said.
Alicent decided to change the subject. "You always do this when you're worried." Alicent said
"Do what?" Rhaenyra asked.
"Distract yourself." Alicent said and Rhaenyra looked up at her. "You worried that your father is about to overshadow you with another son". Alicent blatantly stated.
"I only worry for my mother, and I hope for my father that he gets another son." Rhaenyra stated.
"You want him to have more sons?" Alicent asked.
"I want to fly with you dragonback, see the great wonders across the Narrow Sea and eat only cake, then when we come back I want Rhaegon to beg for my hand." She said.
"I'm being serious." Alicent said.
"I never jest about cake, or Rhaegon. " Rhaenyra argued.
"You aren't worried about your position?" Alicent asked.
"I like this position it's quite comfortable." Rhaenyra smiled. Alicent got up to leave. "Where are you going?" Rhaenyra asked
"Home." She said. "The hour has grown late."
"Princess Nymeria led her Rhoynar across the Narrow Sea." Rhaenyra started to recite what was in the book. "On ten thousand ships to flee their Valyrian pursuers, she took Lord Mors Martell of Dorne to husband, and burnt her own fleet off Sunspear to show her people that they were finished running." Alicent was impressed and Rhaenyra then ripped out the page which surprised her friend.
"What are you doing?" Alicent asked
"To remember." She answered and put the torn page back in the book.
"But if the Septa sees this book then-" Rhaenyra cut Alicent off
"Fuck the Septa!" Rhaenyra spat.
"Rhaenyra!" Alicent scolded and the girls laughed as they walked back to the Red Keep. Alicent couldn't stop thinking about Rhaegon.
Throne room
Rhaegon looked at the Iron Throne and wondered how he would rule. Will he be a good king or a bad one. One thing that he knew for certain was that he'd be a better king than his father.
"That chair will be yours one day." Rhaegon heard his uncle Daemons voice. "When did you arrive?"
"Earlier than you." Rhaegon said and Daemon chuckled.
"It's good to see you again, nephew." Daemon hugged his nephew and Rhaegon returned it. "I suppose we should celebrate your return."
Rhaegon chuckled. "Very well, but I can't stay out the whole night. I promised my parents I'd join them for supper."
"We'll be back before they even know that you left." Daemon smirked.
