Chapter 6

Tragedy Strikes

Blood of the Dragon[on Hold]

Viserys' chambers

"I warned you! I warned you!" Rhaegon had his hands wrapped around his father's throat. He then delivered a punch to the king. "You killed her! You fucking killed her!" He repeatedly punched his father in the face.

"Rhaegon stop!" Daemon entered the room and tried to get Rhaegon off Viserys. "Enough, nephew!"

"No!" Rhaegon shoved Daemon off and choked his father. "I'm going to fucking kill you! Just then Lord commander Ryam and ser Harrold entered as well. They took Rhaegon off the king.

"Please, calm down, my prince." Ser Harrold said. Please.

Rhaegon continued to fight the kinguards grip. He then heard a familiar voice. "Rhaegon!" He turned to see his sister, Rhaenyra. Rhaegon calmed down. He then removed his grip from the Kingsguard and left his father's room.

Rhaegons chambers

Rhaenyra entered her brothers chambers and saw him seated on a chair. The moment Rhaegon saw his sister he started crying. Rhaenyra immediately rushed to her brother and hugged him.

"He killed her." Rhaegon choked. "She loved him and he killed her."

"Shhh. I'm here, Rhaegon." Rhaenyra tried to calm Rhaegon down. "I'm here."

2 days later

Queen Aemma Arryn and her baby wer wrapped up and set on a pyre outside, ready to be laid to rest. The mourners all wore black and saw the queen and her infant son on the pyre as it was ready to be lit.

"They're waiting for you, nephew." Daemon told Rhaegon.

"I wonder if in those few hours that my brother was alive if father was happy?" Rhaegon asked.

"Your father needs you now, more than ever." Daemon pointed out.

"I'll never be what he wants me to be." Rhaegon said. "He wanted a son that would listen to him. An heir that he could control." Rhaegon said and walked forward and looked at his father. He then looked at his dragon Slyrak. He was waiting for his riders' command. Rhaegon then looked at the pyre. "Goodbye, mother. Dracarys!" He comanded, and Slyrak set the pyre on fire. Viserys closed his eyes and silently cried. He had loved only one woman in his life, and now one is gone, his Aemma was gone, and it was all his fault. "I will never forgive this, Father." Rhaegon said and walked up the hill and climbed on Slyrak. "Fly, Slyrak!" The Crimson dragon took off with his rider.

Kingswood

Slyrak was flying with his tremendous speed while Rhaegon was shouting.

"Why?! Why her?!" He yelled. "Faster, Slyrak!" Rhaegon commanded, and the Crimson Beast went faster. "Faster!" The crown prince commanded again. As Slyrak increased his speed, Rhaegon started to remember his mother.

"One day, your father will give up the throne to you, my son." Aemma said to a 10 year old Rhaegon. "You will be the greatest king to ever live."

"Faster!" Rhaegon commanded once again, and the dragon obeyed his rider. Anyone in sight, man, tree, or animal was pushed back. The speed was too much for even Rhaegon, but he didn't care.

"You are strong, my son. It's stronger than I am. Stronger than your father." Aemma told a 13 year old Rhaegon.

"Go faster, Slyrak!" Everything in sight was obliterated as Slyrak kept flying fast.

"Take this, my son." Aemma handed her 17 year old son a token with the symbol of House Arryn. "You are a Targaryen, yes, but you have Arryn blood in you as well. You are pure, and you are good. Promise me you will remember that."

"Stop!" Rhaegon shouted, and Slyrak immediately stopped. Rhaegon was pushed forward and fell off Slyrak into the lake he didn't try to swim. Instead, he kept sinking. He then heard an unfamiliar voice.

"You have to live for her." The voice said, and Rhaegon immediately swam up.

"I'm so sorry, Mother." Rhaegon said and swam to the shore. Slyrak landed beside him.

Red Keep

Alicent was walking in the Red Keep. She had a book with her and was on her way to Prince Rhaegons chambers. Her father had suggested that she comfort him and wear her mother's dress. This isn't how Alicent wanted to be with Rhaegon. She wanted everything to be perfect, but she couldn't defy her father. As she got closer, she saw Rhaenyra and Rhaegon at the door of the crown princes chambers. She smiled when she saw him. She then turned around, hoping that she could talk to Rhaegon tomorrow in her own way, at her own time.

Rhaegons chambers

"How drunk are you?" Rhaenyra asked.

"Not drunk enough." Rhaegon drank more ale and walked to his table to pour another cup.

"Mother wouldn't want this." Rhaenyra tried to reason.

"The dead don't want anything, sister." Rhaegon said. "It's why they're dead."

Rhaenyra walked to Rhaegon and took his cup. She then put it on the table and led Rhaegon to his bed. She sat him down and started to remove his shoes. "You need some rest. We'll deal with all of this on the morrow when your mind is clear." Rhaenyra then stood up and removed his tunic. She saw how muscular her brother was and got distracted. Rhaenyra quickly snapped out of it. "Lay down." She said, and Rhaegon did. Rhaenyra got into bed with Rhaegon and Rhaegon laid on her lap.

"The sad part about this is, this isn't even the worst day." Rhaegon said.

"What do you mean?" Rhaenyra inquired.

"Tonight. Tomorrow and the next few days will be easy. Everyone will try to help and offer condolences, but the following week. That's when it will all be quiet. That's when I'll be alone." Rhaegon explained.

Rhaenyra stroked Rhaegons hair until he fell asleep. "You're not alone, Rhaegon. You're never alone."

The next morning

Rhaenyra woke up in Rhaegons bed. She didn't remember when she fell asleep, nor did she cover herself under the sheets.

"Rhaegon?" Rhaenyra called out.

"I'm here." Rhaegon walked to his bed.

"I don't remember falling asleep. Did we..." Rhaenyra wanted to know if she and Rhaegon had sex.

"No." Rhaegon chuckled. "I woke up to find you asleep, and when I saw you sleeping. I decided that you should sleep in my bed. I slept on the couch."

"Oh. You didn't have to." Rhaenyra said.

"I know, but I didn't want you to question your morals." Rhaegon smirked. "Alicent was looking for you."

"Ah, yes, I forgot. She comforted me last night after the funeral, and I chose to comfort you, hoping it would help." Rhaenyra said.

"Well, I feel better than I did last night." Rhaegon said. "Thank you."

"I'll always be there, brother. No matter the cost." Rhaenyra said.

6 months later

Red Keep

"My prince?" Alicent called out.

"Lady Alicent. What can I do for you?" Rhaegon asked.

"I've only come see how you're doing." Alicent said.

"I'm taking it one day at a time." Rhaegon smiled.

"That's good to hear. Are you going somewhere?" Alicent asked.

"I was on my way to the small council." Rhaegon said. Alicent hid her disappointment. For the last 6 months, she's been talking to the king, but she also tried to talk to Rhaegon when she could. "Ser Erryk, tell my father I'll be late for the meeting."

"Of course, my prince." Ser Erryk bowed and left.

"You seem upset." Rhaegon said.

"I...it's nothing." Alicent waved it off.

"Well, if you wish to talk about it, perhaps I could ask Rhaenyra to accompany you." Rhaegon suggested.

"That would be lovely, but I'm sure I'll see her later. I'll talk to her then." Alicent said. "Would you like to walk with me to the godswood, my prince?" She asked.

"Of course." Rhaegon said. They arrived in the godswood and talked for an hour. It was time for Rhaegon to leave, and he entered the small council chambers and sat on his chair.

"He was a strong lord commander." Viserys said. It's been 6 months since Queen Aemma passed away, and things got worse. Rhaegon does what he wants, no matter how many times his father councils restraint, and Rhaenyra doesn't know what to say or do about anything.

"He was ill for quite some time." Rhaegon pointed out. "Did he pass in peace?"

"Yes, my prince." Mellos said. "He was found to have passed gently in his sleep, his remains are being prepared by the silent sisters, the succeeding Lord Commander Harrold would like to make haste in finding Ser Ryams replacement on the Kingsguard."

"Your grace, my Lords. The Kingsguard must soon be restored to its full complement of seven. With the help of the hand, I've invited a number of fine candidates to court. All have passed fair trials." Lord commander Harrold said.

Just then, Lord Corlys furiously entered the council chambers. "Four ships have been lost. The last one was flying my banner. The Stepstones have now grown into a conflagration, yet you sit here and dither about court business."

"If you have something to discuss, Lord Corlys-" Otto tried.

"I want to know what is to be done about my ships and my men." Corlys said.

"The crown will compensate you for your ship and crew and make an offering to the men's families." Otto said.

"Compensation. It's as if you're gifting him a virgin whore." Rhaegon spoke up. "If the Crabfeeder is on the move, then we ought to deal with him."

"Prince Rhaegon is correct. I don't want compensation. I want to seize the Stepstones by force and burn out this Crabfeeder." Corlys said.

"I am not prepared to start a war with the free cities." Viserys said.

"These pirates are not the free cities." Lord Corlys said.

"Who do you think provides them with their ships and tender Lord Corlys?" Viserys interjected.

"In all of its history, my lord, the Seven Kingdoms have never entered open war with the Free Cities. Were that to happen, the losses would be incalculable." Lord Lyman Beesbury said.

Lord Corlys walked toward Lord Lyman to intimidate him. "What reason does the Crabfeeder have to fear us? The king's own brother has been allowed to seize Dragonstone and fortify it with an army of their Gold Cloaks. Daemon has squatted there for half a year without even a protest from the crown." He said.

"I'll caution you, Lord Corlys." Otto spoke up. A seat at the King's table does not make you his equal."

"Daemon will be dealt with, Lord Corlys, but for now, the Triarchy are an immediate problem, and I agree that there should be a solution to this problem. What do you think should be done about this, your grace?" Rhaegon asked, and that stung for Viserys when Rhaegon called him your grace, not father.

Rhaenyra knew she wasn't allowed to, but she felt that she should voice her opinion. "You have dragon riders, father." Everyone turned to her. "Send us." Rhaegon smirked at his sisters boldness.

"It's not that simple, Rhaenyra." The king told his daughter.

"It is. It would send a message." Rhaegon argued. "It's been a long time since Slyrak flew that distance."

"It would be a show of force." Rhaenyra agreed.

"At least the Crown Prince and the princess have plans." Corlys said arrogantly.

"I only meant that we should at least -" Rhaenyra was cut off by Otto.

"Perhaps there's some better use for the princesses' talents, your grace?" He suggested.

"Since when is pouring wine a talent?" Rhaegon came to the defense of his sister. "Perhaps being the kings fool should be yours then Otto."

Viserys sighed. "Why don't you take the princess to see about the new Kingsguard posting, Lord Commander?" The king suggested.

"A fine idea, your grace." Harrold said.

"This knight will protect you as well. You should choose." Viserys said.

Rhaegon also got up. "I'll come with you." He said, and this made Rhaenyra even happier. "Since the king doesn't wish to talk about things that concern the realm. When all of you are ready to talk about the Stepstones, you will know where to find me. Until then, I'll take my leave for now, my Lords. Your grace." He said and left the small council chambers with Rhaenyra.

Red Keep

Rhaegon and Rhaenyra walked until they got to the their destination, they saw a group of knights whom were ready, fortunately for Taeron, he was tall enough to see them but Rhaenyra needed a step to stand on.

"Not one word, brother." She said, thinking Rhaegon would joke at her for being short.

"You do look beautiful still, sister. Short or not." Rhaegon said and Rhaenyra blushed.

Lord commander Harrold started announcing the candidates. "Ser Desmond Caron, a fine knight, princess. Step forward ser Desmond." Lord commander Harrold said, and Otto walked in to join them. "Son of Ser Royce Caron, Ser Desmond has proved to be strong and steady in both the tourney lists and without, and while traveling through the Kingswood, on his way to Kings Landing, Ser Desmond recently brought quite would-be poacher to justice." Lord commander Harrold said, and there was silence. They were waiting for Rhaenyra to say something, but Rhaegon picked up on the fact that even Rhaenyra didn't know that she had to say something.

Rhaegon chuckled and walked closer to Rhaenyra. "You're supposed to thank him for his loyal service, sister." He whispered.

"We thank you for your loyal service to the crown, Ser." Rhaenyra said.

The knight bowed and stood back with the other knights. The siblings did not fail to notice Princess Rhaenys looking at them. Lord commander Harrold moved a token forward.

"Ser Rymum Mallister." Lord commander Harrold called out. "Son of Lord Lymond Mallister of Seagard, winner of the melee at Cider Hall, he was the last mounted of three and twenty knights, Ser Rymum was knighted at 8 and 10."

Rhaegon was annoyed with hearing how good these knights were at riding horses and pointing lances. "How many of these knights have combat experience, Lord commander? Beyond catching poachers?" The Crown Prince asked.

Lord commander Harrold nodded at the Prince, and Rhaegon couldn't hear Otto sighing. "Ser Criston Cole, son of the steward of the lord of Blackhaven."

"Be welcome, Ser Criston. Rhaenyra said. She then leaned forward. "You saw combat in the Stormlands?" She asked.

"Dornish marches, princess, I fought for a year as a foot soldier against the dornish incursions. Ser Arian Dondarrion knighted me after we razed two of the watchtower along the Boneway" Ser Criston said.

"Impressive, and I was more impressed by your performance in the tourney, unhorsing 2 Baratheons and 2 Targaryens is quite a thing, Ser." Rhaegon said. He remembered how this knight unhorsed him.

"Thank you, my prince." Criston said and bowed his head.

Rhaenyra then looked at Lord commander Harrold. "I choose Ser Criston Cole. Thank you for making this easy, brother." She said and got off the step stool.

"Anything for you." Rhaegon helped her down the stool.

Otto interjected. "Let's not be too hasty, princess. There's no doubt Ser Criston is a fine warrior, but houses such as Crakehall and Mallister are important allies to the crown. Seagard, for instance, is the realm's prime defense against readers from the Iron Islands."

"That is true, but we will not lose the house to rebellion, besides, the houses that were mentioned have only produced tourney knights. Men who want to get anger and frustration out of their system. They aren't worthy candidates to protect my father or myself, regardless of whether I need it or not." Rhaegon pointed out.

"My brother is right. My father and brother should be defended by a man whose known real combat, should he not?" Rhaenyra asked.

"Of course, princess, and forgive me, my prince." Otto said.

"Mm, let us plan ser Cristons investiture then." Rhaegon said.

Originally Otto wanted his daughter to marry Rhaegon, but he knew how dangerous Rhaegon was. Instead when his daughter came back to him to tell him that the crown prince was occupied, Otto thought that perhaps if Alicent went to the king and produced a worthy son, Viserys would name him heir over Rhaegon.
