Chapter 8

Dragons Rage

Blood of the Dragon[on Hold]

Grand Sept

"It's only been half a year since my mother died, and I have a feeling that they want to overthrow my brother as heir. I know how those men plot the moment Rhaegon leaves the council. They don't have the courage to tell it to his face." Rhaenyra said.

"You should not concern yourself with the matters of kings and Lords, Rhaenyra." Alicent assured.

"I'm just disappointed in how my father allows it." Rhaenyra stated.

"I'm sure he's trying his best." Alicent said. She had just come from visiting the king and was looking for Rhaegon, but found Rhaenyra instead. "Come kneel with me. I find this is a way to be with my mother. I know it may sound foolish, but..."

"I don't think it's foolish." Rhaenyra said. She then knelt down. "What do I say?"

"Whatever you wish. It's only for the gods to know." Alicent said.

Rhaenyra started crying. "I just want him to see Rhaegon as worthy."

"Your father loves you and Rhaegon. He'll always choose you both." Alicent assured Rhaenyra.

Royal Gardens

Lord Corlys and Princess Rhaenys were meeting with the King. Lord Corlys was still angered by what had happened this morning in the Small Council Chambers, but he thought that maybe he should talk to the King about the Crown Prince marrying his daughter Laena.

"Your grace." Corlys greeted.

"I'm glad we could meet, I know tempers ran hot today, and I wanted to assure you how much I appreciate the bind between our houses, Rhaenys is my favorite cousin, after all." Viserys said.

Corlys spoke up. "I wish to apologize fir the tenor at the small council today, your grace, It was not my intent to make offense." He said.

"Your fleet is one of the realms' most important assets, Lord Corlys, but you must understand, as king, it is my obligation to avoid war until such time it is unavoidable." Viserys pointed out.

"None among us desire open war. Might I speak plainly, your grace?" He asked.

"I always welcome the unfettered thoughts of the council, Lord Corlys." The king said.

"I fear that the eyes of our enemies are presently fixed on the Red Keep. The Queen has passed. The heir to the throne has no wife. The kings own brother is so angered that he has claimed the Targaryen seat on Dragonstone without challenge, and now a foreign power has established a colony in our most critical shipping lanes." Corlys said.

"You paint such an aspirant portrait of my reign, Lord Corlys." The king said.

"It's an honest one, cousin, at the moment, the crown us perceived as being vulnerable." Rhaenys said.

"You believe that this blind incursion in the Stepstones is the only way to demonstrate that we are not?" Viserys asked.

"To elude a storm, you can either sail into it or around it, but you must never await its coming." Lord Corlys said.

"Do you have a specific course of action to propose, my lord?" Viserys asked, and Corlys and Rhaenys looked at each other.

"Join our families. Have Prince Rhaegon wed our daughter, Laena. Unite the two surviving Valyrian houses. With the Targaryen dragons and the Velaryon fleet bound in blood, you can show the realm that the crown's strongest days are ahead, not behind." Corlys proposed.

"I haven't even thought of Rhaegons betrothals. It's been only 6 months since Aemma has passed, and I'm not sure if he's ready yet, and isn't Laena but a child?" Viserys asked.

"The realm expects Rhaegon to marry, soon or late, your grace. He needs to produce heirs of his own so that the Iron Throne can be secured without challenge. You could not ask for a better match than Laena." Rhaenys said, not answering The Kings question.

Viserys sighed. "I will talk to Rhaegon tonight." He said, and the Velaryon couple looked hopeful.

"If the crown prince declines this proposal, perhaps you could marry Laena, your grace?" Corlys suggested.

"I...I will talk to Rhaegon. Hear what he has to say." Viserys said. They then left the Royal Gardens

Red Keep

The royal family was dining together for the first time in 6 months, Viserys sat at the head. Rhaegon sat next to the empty seat that used to be his mothers, and Rhaenyra sat next Rhaegon.

"We haven't been together or really spoken since..." Rhaenyra spoke up, looking at the empty seat.

"Yes, a regret of mine." Viserys said sadly and looked at his son. Rhaegon was eating. He didn't want to talk to his father at all. He just dined with him for Rhaenyra.

"Ser Harrold provided a fine field of tourney knights, but when Rhaegon questioned them, we discovered that Ser Criston was the only man with true combat experience." Rhaenyra spoke up, wanting to change the subject.

"He'll make a fine knight of the Kingsguard, thank you, son." Viserys said, and Rhaegon just nodded at him.

"Today at the small council -" Rhaenyra started

"Pay it no mind." Viserys cut his daughter off.

"I just thought that I could at least -" She tried again

"You're still young. You will learn how to talk to the lords." Viserys said.

"Don't worry, sister. I'll teach you, and don't pay any mind to Otto, I'll handle him." Rhaegon said, and she smiled at him. He then looked at his father. "Young as she is, she must know how to lead as well."

The king sighed. "I wish to speak to you, Rhaegon. Lord Corlys has offered the hand of Lady Laena to you, and I told him that we would talk about it." Viserys said.

"How old is she?" Rhaegon asked.

"Ten and two, my son." Viserys said, and Rhaegon heard the disgust in his voice. "If you say yes, your betrothal can be as long as you need it to be, but for now mayhaps you can walk with her in the Royal Gardens and get to know her before you make up your mind?" Viserys suggested.

"I decline the offer." Rhaegon calmly said.

"My son -" Rhaegon rudely cut his father off.

"You should take the child to wife since you're eager to kill pregnant women." Rhaegon spat. Rhaenyra was quiet. She knew that Rhaegon had a lot to get off his chest.

"Rhaegon, I never meant for this to happen." Viserys explained.

"Yet my mother is gone. Dead, and you killed her." Rhaegon said. "Know that you have no power over me. Remember that." Rhaegon stood up and left.

Rhaegons chambers

Rhaegon walked into his room, and a few seconds later, he heard a knock on his door.

"Enter." Rhaegon said, and Rhaenyra entered the room.

"Rhaegon, I'm sorry. I thought that us dining together would be good for our family." Rhaenyra said.

"It's not you. Come sit with me." Rhaegon said, and Rhaenyra sat next to Rhaegon. "Father destroyed us, and I can't pretend as if nothing's happened."

"I would never ask that of you." Rhaenyra said.

"Thank you, Rhaenyra." Rhaegon put his hand on hers. "Do you wish to sleep here tonight?" He asked.

"Yes. I want you to hold me tonight." Rhaenyra said.

Rhaegon smiled. "Come here." He laid her on the bed and held her. She eventually fell asleep in his arms, and he smiled at her. Rhaegon then kissed her forehead and fell asleep as well.

The next day

Training yard

Rhaenyra watched as Rhaegon was sparring against Ser Criston, Ser Erryk, and Ser Arryk. One thing that she knew about her brother was that he loved fighting.

Rhaegon seemed to have the upper hand until Ser Erryk smacked the crown prince in his face with the wooden sword. This made Rhaenyra gasp.

Rhaegon smirked as he wiped the blood from his cheek. "That's more like it."

"My prince, forgive me." Ser Erryk apologized.

"There's nothing to forgive." Rhaegon waved it off. "From here on, I don't want you to hold back. Fight me as you would an enemy."

"Yes, my prince." The three knights bowed their heads.

Rhaegon looked up and saw Rhaenyra smiling at him. He then winked at her, and she blushed. Even though all they did was sleep last night, both of them felt a connection to each other. That was the moment they both fell in love. Just then, Otto walked to Rhaegon.

"My prince, I've called the small council to an emergency session." Otto said.

"Why?" Rhaegon asked.

"I think it's best you hear it yourself." Otto said.

"Very well." Rhaegon looked at his sister. "Rhae, I'm going to the small council chambers. Accompany me?" He asked.

Rhaenyra was still blushing from when Rhaegon winked at her. "Yes. I would love that."

Small council chambers

A dragonkeeper stood in the small council chambers. He had something important to report. "It occurred in the darkest of hours, my Lords, during the hour of the bat." The dragonkeeper said in high valyrian. "The thief eluded our pursuit."

"How is it possible for a dragons egg to be stolen out from beneath more than fifty dragonkeepers?" Viserys asked furiously.

"It was Prince Daemon who was the culprit, your grace." The dragonkeeper said.

"Daemon." Viserys said with surprise

"The prince left a missive, which I believe might explain." Otto said

Mellos started to read the letter. "It is the pleasure of Daemon Targaryen, the new Prince of Dragonstone and new heir to the Iron Throne, to announce that he is to take a second wife in the tradition of Old Valyria" Mellos read the letter. "She is to assume the title Lady Mysaria of Dragonstone. She is with child and is to have a dragons egg placed in the babes cradle in the custom of house Targaryen. The prince has invited you to his wedding, your grace, It is in two days' time."

"Gods be good." Lyman said as he sipped his wine.

"Who is lady Mysaria?" Lord Corlys asked

"We believe she's -" Mellos started

"Daemons whore." Otto finished. "This is nothing less than sedition."

"I strongly agree sire." Lyonel said

"My brother wishes to provoke me by calling himself heir and taking over my sons home, he wants me to act on this." Viserys said.

"I was more than willing to look the other way until the Crabfeeder was dealt with, but Daemon couldn't give me that time." Rhaegon said.

"Yes well Daemon does what Daemon wants." Viserys said.

"I'll go to Dragonstone and talk to him." Rhaegon said.

"No, son. Daemon is too dangerous." Viserys pleaded.

"As am I." Rhaegon pointed out.

"The realm is watching, your grace." Corlys reminded the king

"What will you have me do?" Viserys asked. "Send him to the wall? Or perhaps I can put his head on a spike."

"Daemon has seized Dragonstone, surrounded himself with an army of Gold Cloaks, and have now stolen a dangerous weapon." Otto pointed out.

"I'll handle Daemon. He's had his fun, and now its time for me to intervene." Rhaegon stated.

"We've talked about this, Rhaegon." Viserys protested.

"You talked, I listened, and I'm done listening." Rhaegon spat.

"Which egg?" Rhaenyra asked in high valyrian. "Which egg did Daemon take?" She asked again in high valyrian.

The dragonkeeper looked at her in sadness. "It was Dreamfyre's princess, the egg you chose for Queen Aemmas babe's cradle."

Viserys knew exactly what was about to happen. His son, Rhaegon, would want action, maybe even kill Daemon.

"Assemble a detachment, Otto." Rhaegon said as he furiously rose from his chair. "I will go to Dragonstone and drag Daemon back to face justice myself!"

"My prince." Otto called out and Rhaegon stopped. "My apologies, my prince, but I can not allow it. Daemon is without limit. Let me go to Dragonstone." He offered. Otto didn't care about Rhaegon after Alicent started talking to the king, but for now he had to pretend.

"Do it." Viserys quickly commanded before his son could say anything.

"Rhaegon." Rhaenyra softly called out.

Rhaegon could see the hurt in his sisters eyes, and nothing would stop him from getting justice for those who would hurt her.

Dragonstone

Ser Otto, Lord commander Harrold, ser Criston, some household guards Grandmaester Mellos and two dragonkeepers walked on the bridge of Dragonstone. As they got closer they met Daemon, Mysaria and a few gold clocks. Daemon held the egg and tossed it in his hands like a ball.

"Welcome to Dragonstone Otto." Daemon said

"Your occupation of this island is at an end." Otto stated boldy. "You are to relinquish the dragon's egg, disband your army, banish your whore, and leave Dragonstone at once by order of his grace, King Viserys-"

"Where is the king? I don't see him." Daemon cut Otto off.

"His grace would never lower themselves to entertain such a mummers farce." Otto said.

Daemon smirked and then looked at the man who unhorsed him and his nephew. "Ser Crispin, wasn't it?" The Rogue Prince inquired

"Ser Criston Cole, my prince." He corrected Daemon.

"Ah yes apologies I couldn't recall." Daemon said.

"Perhaps my prince recalls when I knocked him off his horse." He said

Daemon laughed. "Very good."

"This is a truly pathetic show." Otto interrupted. "Are you so desperate for the king attention that you've resorted to skulking about like a common cutpurse?"

"I'm simply keeping with the traditions of my house the same as my brother did for his heir." Daemon defended himself.

"Those traditions are for the trueborn children of royalty, not for bastards fathered on a common whore." Otto said.

"Lady Mysaria is to be my wife." Daemon said.

"This is an abomination, with every breath you soil your name, your house, and your brothers reign." Otto reminded him.

"Well our love does not know titles and traditions." Daemon defended.

"And what of you men of the City Watch, aiding the prince in his treason?" Otto asked.

"The king made me their commander, they are loyal to me." Daemon said

"You've come for the egg" Daemon said putting his hand forward. "Here it is."

"Are you mad? Otto asked. "You'd never survive this."

"Well happily neither would you." Daemon said.

"To choose violence here is to declare war against your King." Otto reminded him.

"Wonderful." Daemon smugly said.

"Even if it ends in the death of your unborn child and it's mother?" Otto asked

Those words were threatening enough for Daemon, and the men of the city watch unsheathed their swords and the opposing side did the same. Both sides looked at each other for a while, and then Otto heard a low growl, and it was the bloodwyrm Caraxes. Otto knew that there was no way his men had a chance against a dragon.

"All of you, sheathe the fucking steel." Otto commanded his men and they did as they were told.

Just then he heard a faint roar in the distance and Otto stepped forward to see what it was and from the clouds the Crimson beast, Slyrak who was bigger than Caraxes, ascended with Rhaegon riding him. Slyrak decended behind Otto and the others. He then walked past them as they bowed their heads to his presence.

Otto blocked his path. "What are you doing here, my prince?" Otto asked. He didn't care about Rhaegon anymore, but the king did.

"Preventing bloodshed." Rhaegon responded.

"Ser Criston, please escort the prince to safety." Otto commanded.

"Take care not to startle Slyrak, my lords, for he has not eaten yet." He pushed past Otto and walked toward Daemon.

"You are in my castle, uncle." Rhaegon said in high valyrian.

"You're barely here, so I decided to keep your seat warm." Daemon said.

"You've angered the king." Rhaegon stated.

"I don't see why. This is a day of celebration. I am to be wed." Daemon defended.

"You already have a wife." Rhaegon reminded him.

"Not one of my choosing." Daemon argued.

"And this required you to steal my brother's egg?" He asked.

"Your father placed dragon eggs in yours and your sisters cradle, and I want the same for my child." Daemon defended.

"You're to have a child?" Rhaegon challenged.

"Some day." He said, and Mysaria left in anger.

"I know you're angry. Well, I'm right here, uncle, the reason for your banishment, the reason you're not heir, the Heir who is the bain of your existence. If you wish to kill me, then do it and be done with all this shit." Rhaegon challenged Daemon.

Daemon had always admired his nephews bravery, he remembered when Rhaegon was 11 years old, he would take him for a flight on Caraxes and Rhaegon would intentionally not strap himself in to jump off Caraxes to test Daemon. Daemon walked away, but not before tossing the egg at Rhaegon, who caught it with ease.

Rhaegon then placed the egg in the warm pot that was held by the dragonkeepers, and he gave Otto a dangerous look. He then climbed on Slyrak and left Dragonstone

Kings Landing

Viserys was annoyed with everything that had been happening. He knew marrying his son to Laena Velaryon was the right move, but he also knew that Rhaegon didn't want to marry now. The king went to one of the few people in the Seven Kingdoms that he knew had honor and would be honest with him, Lord Lyonel Strong.

"No, please, Lord Lyonel." He said," Ask he entered the small council chambers, and Lyonel rose and sat down. "I have come looking for an unencumbered opinion."

"That's all I would ever give, your grace." He said.

"Ever since my name was read by the archmaesters at the great council, I have felt Corlys Velaryon's envious gaze staring at me from across the blackwater." Viserys said bitterly.

"You sit upon the highest seat in the realm, your grace, proud men do not like looking up." Lyonel pointed out.

"Yes." He sighed and walked closer to Lyonel. "Laena Velaryon."

"Lord Corlys is your Master of Ships...and she is the eldest daughter of the wealthiest house in the realm." Lyonel continued making his points. "She comes from unimpeachable Velaryon stock, and she has Targaryen blood. What's to mislike?"

"She is twelve, and Lord Corlys wants her to marry my heir or myself." Viserys said with discomfort.

"She will mature." He reminded him

"I never asked to remarry. I wanted to give the throne to Rhaegon after Aemma gave birth." Viserys snapped.

"As King, you have claim to all things, even those you don't want. Marrying again or planning your heirs betrothal is not an obligation you can put off for long, and it would be wise to have Prince Rhaegon marry to produce his own line, or for you to continue your own." Lyonel said.

Viserys sighed. "What if I were to reject Lord Corlys' proposal?" He asked.

"He would not be like to take it well." Lyonel reminded him. "I fear nothing short of a direct line to the Iron Throne would satisfy him. You should also consider that we find ourselves on the precipice of war in the Stepstones, and the Sea Snake holds claim to nearly half the realms ships."

"He would not dare withhold them in the face of the realms need." Viserys said defiantly. "Who is he to Hector me?"

"No one, your grace, but Driftmark makes for a better ally than it does an enemy. The Sea Snake has made a calculated reach, a fair play for a man of his position." Lyonel said. "If you truly want my unencumbered opinion."

"I do." Viserys said visibly, annoyed.

"You should wed Laena Velaryon, your grace. Sate Lord Corlys and fix him at your side permanently as an ally." Lyonel said.

"What of Rhaegon?" Viserys asked.

"The crown prince is angry. Perhaps you should wait until he is ready, your grace." Lyonel said, and Viserys nodded in agreement at the master of laws

Just then, the door opened, and Ser Steffon walked in. "Your grace, the Crown Prince, has returned from Dragonstone."

"Dragonstone? Where is he now?" The king asked.

"The Prince is in his chambers, your grace." Ser Steffon said.

Viserys practically sprinted out of the small council chambers and went straight to his son's room.

Rhaegons chambers

"I told you that I'd handle it." Rhaegon arrogantly said.

"You lied to me. You said that you would inform Father." Rhaenyra stated.

"Yes, well, I don't regret not telling him." Rhaegon said. He then walked to Rhaenyra and put his hands on her shoulders. "For the last 6 months, you've taken care of me. Today was my turn, and if it meant that I had to defy father, then so be it."

Rhaenyra smiled. She thought that this would be the perfect time to tell Rhaegon how she felt about him.

"Rhaegon, I have to tell you something." Rhaenyra said.

"Tell me." Rhaegon eagerly said.

"I-" Rhaenyra was interrupted by Viserys bursting through the door.

"You disobeyed me." Viserys said.

"I wasn't under the impression that I was given an order, father." Rhaegon said, and Rhaenyra had to hide her smirk.

"You fled Kings Landing without a word, and you acted without the crowns leave." Viserys stated angrily. "You are my only heir. Daemon could've killed you!"

"He could've tried." Rhaegon said and looked at Rhaenyra. "I need to talk to Father, but I shall see you on the morrow." Rhaenyra nodded and walked out of Rhaegons room.

Once Rhaenyra left the room, the king sat down on a chair. "You went to Dragonstone." Viserys pointed out

"And I retrieved the egg without bloodshed, a feat I'm sure Ser Otto would never be able to accomplish...with Daemon hating him and all." Rhaegon stated.

"Yes, well..." Viserys couldn't help but chuckle. "I sometimes forget how alike you and your mother were. If she were here, she'd scold you and then hug you, and say how proud she is of you." Viserys sighed. "Your mother's absence is a wound that will never heal. Without her, the Red Keep has lost a warmth, and I dare say it would never return."

"It won't." Rhaegon said. "I can't forgive you for what you did, but it pleases me to hear you say this. To know that Rhaenyra and I aren't alone in our grief."

"I wish I had known better what to say to you in the aftermath. I struggle to realize that my son had so quickly become a man and grown, but I finally understand that he knows that as rulers, we must do what is expected of us." Viserys said.

Rhaegon looked at her father with straight face. "The king and his heir needs a wife, but I'm not ready yet, father, and you can't force me."

"I could never take back what I have done to your mother, but I will spend the rest of my life trying to make things right with you and your sister." He looked at his son. "You are my heir, Rhaegon. That won't change, but our line is vulnerable. Too easily ended." Rhaegon nodded in understanding. "By you starting a new line, you may begin to ensure that our family is better defended."

"Against whomever may dare to challenge us?" Rhaegon inquired.

Viserys nodded and sighed. He then looked at his son. "I do not wish to make us estranged."

"I know, father, but I can't marry because you say so. It has to be my choice." Rhaegon said, and Viserys nodded. Even though Viserys wasn't on board with his son waiting, he didn't want to push.

Small Council Chambers

The next day

King Viserys called a small council meeting. He stared outside the window as his council entered the chambers along with Rhaenyra, Alicent, and Laena. The council members took their seats, and Alicent stood next to her father. Rhaenyra stood next to Rhaegon, and Laena stood next to her father.

"Good morrow, my Lords, my Ladies." Viserys greeted his council and the women in the room. He placed his marble in its holder. "I have decided to take a new wife." He looked at his son and daughter, who both smiled and nodded at him. "I intend to marry..." Lord Corlys was smiling. His blood would finally be on the throne. The king then looked at Alicent, and Rhaenyras' worst fear was about to come true. Her best friend was about to be chosen as her fathers new wife. "The lady Alicent Hightower, before springs end." This shocked Rhaegon.

Lord Corlys looked at the king angrily. "This is an absurdity he stood up. My house is Valyrian, the greatest power in the realm."

"And I am your King." Viserys reminded him.

Corlys looked at Otto, who had a smug look on his face. With that, he just got up with his daughter and left essentially resigning his position as master of ships.

Rhaenyra was destroyed, heartbroken. Her best friend had betrayed her, and Alicent couldn't even look at Rhaenyra.

"Rhaenyra?" Viserys called out, and with that, she also left.

"Congratulations, your grace." Otto said, and Rhaegon furiously rose from his seat.

"Shut up Otto, or I tear your tongue from your fucking head!" Rhaegon spat. He then looked at his father. "You've destroyed my sister and you dishonor my mother... Fuck you." Rhaegon the left the council to see to Rhaenyra.
