Echoes of You: Chapter 36
Echoes of You (The Lost & Found Series Book 2)
Maddie smoothed the invisible wrinkles in her sundress for at least the tenth time since weâd left the cabin fifteen minutes ago. I covered her hand with mine. âYou look beautiful.â
âMaybe I shouldâve worn the green one.â
I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing. âThis one brings out the color of your eyes.â
Maddieâs expression softened. âHave I told you I love you?â
âMaybe once or twice. But Iâll never get tired of hearing it.â I slowed to a stop and rolled down my window so I could punch in the code to my parentsâ gate.
âI think I might be sick,â Maddie mumbled.
âYouâve been here more times than I can count. My family loves you. You have nothing to worry about.â I took my foot off the brake, and we eased through the opening.
âBut I was your friend then. Things are different now. What if they donât want us together?â
I stopped my SUV on the drive and turned to her. âDo you honestly believe theyâd think that?â
Maddie pressed her lips together before she spoke. âIâve brought a lot of trouble into your life. And your parents might think Iâm not good enough for you.â
Pain lanced my chest, and I lifted my hands to cup Maddieâs cheeks. âYou are the thing to ever happen to me. They know that.â
She nodded shakily.
âBut it wouldnât matter what anyone thinks anyway because youâre it for me, Mads.â
Maddieâs breath hitched. âNashâ¦â
âI know itâs soon, but itâs also not. Iâve known you practically my whole life. Thereâs no one else I want to live the rest of my days with.â
Tears glistened in her eyes. âNash Hartley, I spent almost an hour on this makeup. If you ruin it by being all sweet, Iâm going to be really freaking pissed.â
I chuckled and leaned forward to kiss her. It was warmth and comfort and home. âLove you.â
âMore than I thought possible,â Maddie whispered against my lips.
âGood. Now letâs go because Iâm starving.â
She laughed. âWhat else is new?â
âHey, sometimes itâs good to be predictable.â
I guided my SUV up the steep drive to my childhood home. I pulled into a makeshift spot next to a row of other vehicles. It looked like we were the last to arrive.
A panicked look overtook Maddieâs face. âI thought you said dinner was at six.â
âIt is. I think people just got here early for drinks and appetizers.â
She scowled at me as she grabbed a plate from the back seat. âWeâre late.â
I sighed. âWe arenât late.â
But Maddie didnât even hear me because she was already out of the SUV. I couldnât help but laugh. I loved that she cared so much about what my family thought. But they already loved her like a member of our crazy brood.
I hurried to catch up with Maddie, taking her hand as she climbed the steps. I opened the front door without knocking and almost ran into Lawsonâs eldest son.
Luke simply grunted and kept right on walking toward the basement.
His younger brother, Drew, rolled his eyes as he followed him. âLukeâs in a .â
âShut up,â Luke called without looking back.
Drew grinned. âProbably pissed because I just kicked his ass in Halo.â
I held up my free hand for a fist bump. âMy man.â
Drew made a show of dusting off his shoulders. âIâll school you if you want.â
I grinned. âAfter dinner. You and me. Just donât go crying to your dad when I decimate you.â
Drew shook his head, a devilish smile on his face. âDonât you whine when I make you cry in front of your hot new girlfriend.â He winked at said . âHey, Maddie.â
She choked on a laugh. âHow old are you again?â
He straightened to his full height. âThirteen.â
âGoing on twenty-two,â Maddie mumbled.
âDonât go trying to steal my girl,â I warned my nephew.
Drewâs smile only widened as he took off down the hall. âNot my fault she might want a winner.â
âMaddie!â a little voice yelled as a blur of motion caught my eye.
Maddie grinned as Charlie skidded to a stop in front of her. âHey, Charlie.â
âCady said you got a dog. Did you? Did you?â
âI did. Think you want to come over and meet him one of these days?â
He bobbed his head up and down. âWhadya name him?â
âClyde.â
Charlie giggled. âThatâs a funny name.â
âWell, heâs kind of a funny dog.â
Charlie stretched up on his tiptoes. âWhadya bring?â
Maddie released my hand and crouched down. âBrownies.â
Charlieâs eyes widened. âWith frosting and sprinkles?â
âI donât mess around when it comes to brownies.â
âThink I could have one before dinner?â he asked hopefully.
I chuckled. âI donât think Grandma would be too happy about that.â
Charlie clasped his hands together in front of him and rocked back and forth. âShe wouldnât have to knowâ¦â
âI heard that, Charlie Bear,â my mom said as she walked up.
âShoot!â he grumbled.
My mom grinned. âGotta have eyes in the back of your head around here.â
As Maddie straightened, my mom pulled her into a hug. âI canât tell you how happy I am that youâre back. Feels like everything is just as it should be.â
Maddie melted into her hold, returning her hug. âThank you.â
As my mom released her, I stepped forward and wrapped my arm around Maddieâs waist, brushing my lips against hers. âIt does feel right.â
Momâs eyes widened as they ping-ponged between Maddie and me. âAre you twoâ?â
Charlie made a gagging noise. âKissing is gross.â
I chuckled as I looked at my mom. âI thought for sure gossip wouldâve made its way to you by now.â
âIt did, but I thought gossip was all it was. You know everyone always thought you two were dating when you werenât.â My mom grabbed the plate from Maddieâs hand and shoved it at me. Then she pulled her in for another hug. âThis couldnât make me happier. The one girl who could keep my boy in line.â
âHey,â I clipped. âI keep myself in line.â
Mom sent me an exasperated stare. âYou give your poor mother weekly heart attacks.â
Maddie chuckled as she released my mom. âIâm not sure anyone can reel this one in.â She looked up at me. âBut Iâm kind of partial to him when heâs wild.â
I dipped to kiss her softly.
âKissing!â Charlie yelled at the same time my mom said, âI think Iâm going to cry.â
âDaaaaaaad!â Charlie called as Lawson walked up. âYou gotta arrest Uncle Nash. He keeps kissing Maddie.â
Lawson arched a brow. âThat is quite the offense.â
I handed Charlie the plate of brownies. âWhy donât you put these in the kitchen?â
âOkay.â He took off with the plate.
My mom smacked me and headed after him. âHeâll eat them all before he gets there.â
Lawson grinned at Maddie and me. âFirst official family dinner. Howâs it feel?â
âI was a little nervous,â Maddie confessed.
Lawson squeezed her shoulder. âYouâll do great. Itâs Nash who needs to worry about being on his A-game. Mom and Dad will never forgive him if he upsets you.â
The light in Maddieâs eyes danced. âItâs good to have that trump card in my back pocket.â
I narrowed my eyes on them. âYou know, itâs not nice to gang up on someone.â
Lawson chuckled, but the action didnât reach his eyes.
âIs everything okay?â I asked.
He glanced over his shoulder at the crowd in the kitchen. âThereâs something I need to talk to you about. Can you take five in Dadâs office?â
Maddie stiffened. âDoes this have anything to do with me?â
Lawsonâs gaze shifted back to us, but he didnât say anything.
âIf Iâm involved, I deserve to hear whatâs going on,â Maddie pushed.
Lawson let out a sigh. âOkay.â
We moved farther away from the living area, slipping into my dadâs study.
âWhatâs going on?â I asked.
Lawson looked between the two of us. âI got a call from the mayor a little while ago. There are now two complaints against you.â
My jaw worked back and forth as Maddie gripped my hand. âWho else? Jimmy?â
Maddieâs hand spasmed around mine.
Lawson shook his head. âAdam Westchester. He said youâre harassing him and that he wants you fired from the department.â
