Chapter 24
Behind The Alpha Series Book 6 Oliver
(Chapter Song âOriginal Pranksterâ by The Offspring)
OLIVER My head is spinning. Iâm trying to keep it together, but all these people telling me to wait is really starting to piss me off.
After changing, eating and cleaning up, we hop a chopper to Phoenix.
Iâm checking in with River on the hour. Ezra has slipped into a coma and my head is about to explode.
I walk into the Alpha council room. Itâs a lot different here than Falcon. I always get a weird vibe from them.
As I walk through the doors, Graham is on the phone. Heâs talking quiet, but I still catch itâ¦itâs interesting.
âPolly, I have no idea what youâre talking aboutâ¦Noâ¦No, I wasnât thereâ¦Polly, I'd know if I was outside your houseâ¦Stalker?!...Are you kidding me right now?...Pollyâ¦Noâ¦Yes, I will stayâ¦I didnât do thisâ¦Donât hang upâ¦Pollyâ¦â He pulls his phone away and looks at his phone with confusion.
âEverything alright?â I stop and study his face.
He glances at me, runs his thumb down his screen and pockets his phone. âOliver.â He gives me a half smile. âUhâ¦yeahâ¦.Just a misunderstanding.â He huffs a chuckle and straightens up. âYou want answers.â
âYes.â I nod.
He puts a hand on my upper back. âYou came the right place.â
We all take our seats and Owen takes the front. âAlpha Fredericks. Welcome to Phoenix.â He greets and I nod in acknowledgment. âI think you know everyone here.â
âI do.â I grumble.
âNice to see you, Compa. When you coming to play poker with me?â Mateo smirks.
âWhen you stop cheating.â I smirk back. Iâve been fleeced by him before.
âSmart.â Bear mumbles from the wall.
Mateo turns his chair and shoves him with his foot. Bear chuckles and Mateo shakes his head.
âAlright, Oliver. You have an issue with a rogue?â Owen asks.
âYesâ¦Sheâs myâ¦Sheâs a rogue and sheâs dying.â I donât need these guys freaking out like Falcon.
Darcy leans on the table. âWhy do you want to save her?â
âI just do.â I narrow my eyes. I donât have time to have my life picked apart.
âBroâs helping a girl. If we can cure her, we can help the rest of them.â Brody says.
âRight.â I nod.
Darcy ticks his head. âThatâs noble.â He smirks and narrows his eyes. âBut I suspect thereâs more to this girl then Oliverâs letting on.â
âFocus.â I grit.
He sits up and puts up his hands.
âMy mother and Miranda are searching their vault as we speak. If they find anything theyâll call, but I will tell you, this new Croak, itâs not good. Everything weâve tried so far has failed.â Jake informs. âLondonâs medical teams are working around the clock. Ricky says they may have something, but they have to confirm it.â
âWhat?â I ask.
âA string of DNA implanted in the virus. Apparently, Ricky can only describe it as a new set of genetic instructions.â
I scrunch my brow. âWhat the hell does that mean?â
He leans on the table. âWell, if what she says is true, the rogues are evolving.â
âEvolving into what?â Confusion fills me.
He taps his fingertips together. âIf they are allowed to continue we could be looking at a whole new species of shifter. One that will pretty much resemble the genetics and behavior of Dire wolves.â
My brows go up. âYou have got be kidding me.â
Owen shakes his head. âThe results are pretty conclusive. In human history, dire wolves with a thing of the ice age, in our worldâ¦A dire wolf was a fierce soldier. Willing to kill at a moments notice. Well trained, relentless and determined. The last fell 1000 years ago. By the looks of things, someone has found a way to genetically manipulate us and bring them back.â
âOk. So this could be a good thing then.â I offer.
âIf in the right hands. The problem with Dire wolves is they are easily swayed and controlled. History shows they want the fight. They donât care what fight. Right now, this army is the worst possible thing that could exist.â He says grimly.
âHow do we stop it?â I ask.
Graham leans on the table. âThis is the ethical question. In proper hands, these people can be trained to live decent lives if given the opportunity to live and evolve. The question becomes, do we allow that? Can we contain it? Do we want that responsibility of birthing a whole species?â
âAlliance Labs have been playing God for decades. If we allow this to happen, weâd be doing the same.â Hunter interjects.
I lean back and turn to him. âIf we slaughter them, aren't we still playing God? What if this a fate thing?â
âFate and science canât really play in the same yard though.â Hunter says.
âWhy not? If everything happens for a reason, maybe thereâs a reason theyâre evolving. We donât know that this isnât some plan by them.â I point up to the ceiling.
Jake ticks his head. âWe could ask.â
I arch a brow. âAsk?â
He turns his chair and looks up at the roof. âLen!!â
I jut back and stare at him like he has a screw loose. âLen?â
Hunter sighs. âPrepare yourself.â
âPrepare for whatâ¦â
âHi!â
I jump out of my skin as some skinny, pissant kid with moppy brown hair appears, cross legged on the table in front of me.
âWHAT THE FUCK?!â I growl loud.
He laughs and slaps his leg. He points to me and looks around the table. âI like this guy.â
I swing at him and he disappears. He appears on the wall beside Bear.
âHey, Ash. Howâs it going, buddy?â Len grins.
âGet away from me.â Bear growls.
âI see youâre in a mood. I get it.â He pushes off the wall, walks to Jake and starts to massage his shoulder. âYou rang?â He says playfully.
I point to him and look at Hunter. âWhat the fuck is that?â
âThatâ¦â Hunter starts.
âIâ¦my psychopathic friendâ¦am Len a.k.aâ¦Destiny of the World.â He bows.
âDestinyâ¦Heâs bullshitting?â I ask Hunter.
Hunter shakes his head. âNope, that annoying puke is Destiny.â
Huntâ¦We talked about this.â Len put his hands on his hips.
âNoâ¦You fucked with my systems, laughed in my face and blinked your ass out. Itâs taken me a year fix the shit you caused.â He growls.
He nods. âClearly youâre still madâ¦OKâ¦Wallow in your bitternessâ¦.Moving on.â He claps his hands together and looks around the table. âWhat can I do you for?â
âThe rogues.â Jake says.
Len blinks out and blinks on the table. He leans back on Owen's podium and kicks his legs out, crossing his feet. âRogues? Those are fun guys, huh.â He smiles.
âNo, theyâre not!â I bark.
Len scowls. âWhoa, buddy. Find your center.â He snaps his fingers and a tin with burning incense appears in front of me. âGood vibes in, bad vibes out. Find your happy place.â He imitates breathing deep with his hand.
âMan!â I bat the incense away. It flies across the table and onto the floor. I point to him. âI will kill you!â
âYou could, but then I would just kill you back, then you kill me againâ¦It would just get messy. We should just talk it out. Want a hug?â His brows go up.
âOwenâ¦â My mouth goes small, I tilt my head and glare daggers.
âLen. What are you doing with the rogues?â Owen asks with annoyance.
He ticks his lips down and shrugs. âNothing. Just letting things happen.â
âPeople are dying!â I growl.
âPeople die every day. How many have you killed recently? Donât tell me youâve all of a sudden grown a set of morals. Ollie, we all know you like the dark side.â He smirks.
âNot like this, you dick.â I snarl.
He sits up. âOK. Yes, a few eggs are brokenâ¦horribly, butâ¦this is a teaching moment, guys. Look, the Len-miester has it all under control.â He holds his hands out to the side and looks around the table.
Jake crosses his arms. âWhat are we exactly supposed be learning Len?â
Len smirks and leans to him. âIf I told you, you wouldnât learn anything.â
âThatâs it!â I shoot out of my chair and Len disappears with a cackling laugh echoing around the room.
I glare at Owen.
âHeâs his friend, not mine.â Owen points to Jake. âI only wore him for a year.â
Jake nods in shame.
I twist my face into confusion. âIâm in hell!â I flop my arms to my side and slam into my chair.
Owen straightens his suit and hair. âAlright. Cosmic idiot aside, what we have is confirmation that the guys up there couldnât give a shit about whatâs going on down here. So, strategies on how to proceed?â
Sawyer kicks back. âLoad em up and start firing. Open season.â He says as he picks his nails with a pocket knife.
âI can agree with that. Wipe em out.â Zane says.
Peter holds out his hand. âAfter we find out we canât cure them, of course.â
âWell, if they turn into these dire things, that would be bad. Do we want to wait until that happens?â Brody asks.
âNot another meeting. Are you serious?â
I turn to Graham as he pushes his chair back. He has this look of snarkiness and attitude. My brow goes up at his outburst.
He stands and rips off his glasses. âUgh. Outta here. Catch ya guys later.â He waves his arm at the council and walks out of the room.
âOKâ¦Thatâs the fifth time heâs done something weird. Now, can we say thereâs something wrong?â Darcy holds his hand out to the door while looking at Owen.
Owen nods. âOK. Iâll set him up with a psych evaluation.â
âThank you.â Darcy breathes.
I flip my eyes between the two. I canât even. OK, focus.
âWe arent hunting the rogues.â I state. âI have some information on where theyâre coming from.â
âWe know theyâre coming from the North.â
I eye him. âTheyâre coming from Axelridge.â
âWhat?!â Hunter turns his chair to me. âNoâ¦no, Oliver.â
âYes, they are." I cross my arms and turn my chair to him.
âWhere did you get this information?â Owen asks.
âNo, itâs bullshit. Finn doesnât create rogues.â Hunter grits.
âI didnât say he was creating them, but something or someone is.â I correct.
âWho?â Jake asks.
âHe goes by the name of Cornell. He made a deal with Michael and Lefu to make a rogue army. From what I understand, heâs using Axelridge as his breeding ground.â I inform.
Hunter searches his tablet. âI canât find anything on a rogue maker, just a serial kidnapper.â
âThatâs him.â I point to the picture. âHeâs making rogues and from what I was told, heâs in Axelridge.â
âOk. Hunter, make a profile on this guy. Contact Trezner. Weâre still waiting for the shamans so Oliver, youâre welcome to use the guest penthouse here until we figure this out.â Owen instructs.
âI wasnât leaving any way.â I say.
Jakeâs phone rings. He puts it to his ear. âQuinn?...Whoa, slow down. What happened?...â He looks around the room with concern. âHow many?...Same guy?...OK, OKâ¦We'll get the Enforcers on itâ¦Quinn, calm downâ¦No, do not engageâ¦Quinn!â He stuffs his phone in his pocket and stands. âThe guy in black struck again."
âWhat? Where?â Owen asks.
âThe school.â Jake grumbles as he packs his stuff. âSeveral kids injured. All lycans. Quinnâs off the rails. I gotta go.â
âShit.â
âAre you serious?â
âWhat dick attacks a bunch of kids?!â
âWhatâs going on?â I look around the room.
âWeâve had a problem with a guy dressed all in black going around the city killing lycans. Like a vigilante of sorts. We call him the Black Mace.â Owen rubs his nape.
âThe Black Mace.â I raise a brow. âWhat? Are we in a comic book now?â I flop my hands open on the table.
âWell, biker in black with spiked ball sounded weird.â Darcy smirks. âHot, but weird.â
I press my lips together. Iâm surrounded by idiots.
âWell, have fun with your super hero shit. I'll be fighting rogues like a normal person.â I wave them off and head for the guest apartment.
As I walk through the halls, my phone rings. âRiver, is she awake?â I stop. âRepeatâ¦When?...Where were you, rubbing one off?! How could youâ¦Fuckâ¦â I rub my forehead. âIâll call my Enforcers to look for herâ¦Iâm in Phoenixâ¦Iâm trying to find a cure, Riverâ¦if you even think of shooting her, Iâll shred you to goddamn pieces!...FIND HER! ALIVE!â
I hang up and dial my brother. I start walking to my apartment. âIanâ¦Ezra escaped the infirmaryâ¦I knowâ¦I need all units on the search. Rescue only, Ian. If she dies, Iâll throw down bodies, I swear it.â I get my key card and head to the elevator. âIâll be 24 hours and Iâm coming home. She might show up there. I want to have a cure ready for her.â
I hang up and rub my nape. I want to hop the first chopper out of here, but I cant. Not when Iâm so close. Iâm not really afraid of her surviving out there, I know she can do it with ease. Iâm afraid her wolf will get her killed. It feels like her wolf is more sick than she is. Ezra has a form of understanding that I can punch through. Getting through her wolf is almost next to impossible.
âWhat are you doing, baby bird?â I mumble as I look up at the ceiling.
