Chapter 132
The Luna and her Quadruplet Pups
3rd Person Riley, Ryder, Parker and Paisley gazed around the dimly lit underground chambers where they now stood.
Sophie had led them deep into the bowels of the old sewer system, finally stopping when they reached what could only be described as the headquarters of Alta Montañaâs unofficial orphanage.
The entire space was littered with old mattresses and discarded furnishings, with more than one half-
starved pup looking on at the new arrivals with open curiosity. Sophie guided them forward through the melee, seeming completely unbothered by the unpleasant sights and smells.
For the quadruplets, who had only ever known comfort and safety, the sights were truly horrifying, but they knew better than to judge. Young as they were, they realized none of the children around them had chosen this life, but had been forced into it by circumstance.
All four offered shy smiles to the other pups in the dank sewers, even as they descended deeper into the eerie space. The other pups however, did not return there friendly expressions. âl donâ like this.â
Paisley murmured in her sisterâs ears. The other kids look really grumpy.â
âSheâs right.â Ryder agreed. â| donâ feel good âbout this.â
âWeâre âready in it.â Riley replied, taking Paisleyâs hand and giving it a squeeze. âWe canât really back out now.â
âI mean, we could:â Parker countered, âand if they try to stops us, then we know is not okay.â
âYou haves a point.â Riley conceded, leaning forward to tap Sophie on the shoulder. However before she could make contact, Sophie rounded the corner, leading them into a new corner of the sewers.
There was a high vaulted ceiling, and an iron bridge over a steady stream of black water. On the other side of the bridge, a teenage boy sat in an ornate chair, watching their approach with bright eyed interest.
âWhatâs this, Sophie?â He asked. His voice was clearly in the middle of transitioning from child to adult, cracking a squeaking awkwardly.
âI found them in the alley.â Sophie announced, offering the boy a wide smile. They were hiding from the police.â
âAnd so youngâ The boy remarked, seeming pleased by this fact. âQuadruplets too â thatâll be good for business.â
âI thought you might appreciate themâ Sophie blushed prettily, seeming suddenly much less jaded than before.
âWhat are your names?â The boy asked, looking between the pups.
âYou first.ââ Parker countered, leaning into his siblings for support.
âIm Fabian The boy stated simply, surprising no one. âIâve been living here for more than five years now, i can help you with whatever you need- assuming you pay me my due respect.â
âAnd what âspect is that?â Riley asked, âWe donâ know you, so is not like we owe you anything.â
The other pups in the room exchanged worried glances, which did not go unnoticed by Ryder, Riley, Parker and Paisley. The more they saw of this place, the less they liked it. Sophie had made it sound like a safe haven, but the other children here didnât seem all that happy. In fact, they seemed rather intimidated by Fabian and his schemes.
âYou will.â Fabian proclaimed, his smile never slipping. âIf you stick with me, Iâll show you how to survive here, Iâll help you in any way I can.â
âWe donât wanna survive heres.â Paisley repeated the same sentiment theyâd expressed to Sophie.
âWe want to goes homeâ
âAnd where is home?â Fabian asked.
âThe NightFang packâ Ryder answered promptly, not pausing to wonder when heâd stopped thinking of the Dark Moon territory as his home. The moment they found Paisley and Ethan, home became wherever their family was, and he wasnât about to question that.
âThatâs a very long way away.â Fabian assessed, his brow wrinkling with confusion. âHow did you get here.â
âWe were pup-nappedâ Riley shared. âAnd we appreciate you letting us hide here, but we donâ wanna stay.â
âAre you sure?â Fabian pressed. âYou could have a good life hereâ
None of the pups were old enough to know how to handle such an awkward situation. The truth was that their life in the NightFang pack was a thousand times better, but they didnât want to insult their potential allies by pointing this out. âThanks,â Parker murmured, âbut we just wanna get back to our Mommy and Daddy.
A few of the pups scattered throughout the space inhaled sharply. âYouâre not orphans?â Fabian questioned.
âNoâ Paisley answered softly. âWeâre just lost.â
âWell thatâs alright.â Fabian decided, gesturing for the other children in the room to settle down. âEither way youâre going to need some money in order to make it back home. And thereâs only one way for pups to make money in this town.â
âWe donâ wanna steal.â Ryder said, trying not to offend their hosts, but not knowing how else to express this sentiment.
âNo one wants to steal.â Fabian scoffed. âItâs not a choice, itâs just a way of getting by.â
âCan we has a minute?â Riley asked him, not sure why she was deferring to a teenagerâs authority, but realizing it was the right thing to do nonetheless.
âOf course.â Fabian agreed, giving them his blessing to consult each other in private.
The pups huddled together, exchanging worried expressions as they contemplated their options. âIs not as simple as heâs making it seem.â Parker insisted.
Specially not for us. lf weâre caughts, weâll be taken to the kingâ
âI donâ think many of these pups worry âbout being caught.â Riley reasoned. âIt seems like they get away with their schemes, oth-wise theyâd be much more afraid.â
âYou haves a pointâ Ryder contributed, âbut I still donâ like it. Fabian seems awfully slimy.â
âHe does.â Paisley confirmed, âl donâ like the way he looks at us. Like weâre some kinda trophy or sperimentâ
âAnd heâs only just met us.â Riley added, âso itâs kinda creepy.â
âIs defintly creepyâ Ryder confirmed.
âSo what do we do?â Parker cut in, trying to reassert some order in their discussion.
âI dunnoâ Paisley grimaced. âI mean we do haves to eat and sleep, anâ heâs offering us a place to stay.
âI think we should stayâ Riley put forth, âbut I donât thinks we should trust him.â
âl agree.â Ryder said, âI donâ like the way he looks at us, but I dunno what else to do.â
âIs agreed then.â Parker decided, turning back to Fabian. He straightened himself up to his full height-
technically the oldest of his siblings, he was also the most dominant, if not the most mischievous. So in times like these it was only right that he take control and speak for their small pack. Still, heâd never felt the kind of pressure he did now, for theyâd never been in such a dire situation. âWhat do we have to do?â He asked Fabian, hoping against hope that the answer wouldnât be too terrible.
âThatâs excellent news.â Fabian grinned, looking to Sophie. âLetâs set them up with their own corner, and then we can see what theyâre made of.â
Sophie nodded eagerly. âI like it, and as cute as they are, theyâre bound to bring in lots of cash.â
Half an hour later, Riley, Ryder, Parker and Paisley were gathered at the end of a narrow street in the village, nervously looking around for signs of the shepherds or the police. âWhat do we do?â
âItâs really simple.â Sophie answered, pushing a collection bin into their hands. âJust look really pitiful and beg for money. Some pups sing or put on little shows to try and bring in more money, but itâs only your first day. Tomorrow Iâll teach you how to pick pockets so sneakily that no one will ever suspect theyâre missing their wallets, but today letâs just focus on testing your cuteness.â
âOur cuteness?â Riley repeated, crinkling her nose.
âYeah, the cuter you are, the more money you make.â Sophie reasoned. âItâs not the best system, but it definitely works.â
âHow much of the moneys we make do we get to keep?â Parker asked, all too aware that part of their earnings was going to be handed over to Fabian.
âWell,â Sophie hedged, looking as though she didnât really want to answer. âItâs hard at first because it takes a little bit of cash to get set up- and thereâs four of you. Thatâs a lot of supplies.â
âAre you saying we donâ get to keep any of it?â
Paisley guessed, eyeing the older girl with fresh suspicion.
âJust for now.â Sophie nodded. âknow itâs not ideal, but in time youâll learn to love it here.â
âWe arenât going to stay long enough for that.â
Riley reminded her.
âOh, right.ââ Sophie blushed, instantly sparking the suspicions of her young protegees. âIâm sorry, most of the pups who come through here stay for the long haul.
â1f thatâs true, then how is Fabian the oldest?â
Paisley questioned. âImean heâs bigger, but itâs not like heâs that growned.â
âMaybe not, but he is in charge.â Sophie reminded them. âAnd you donât want to cross him.â
âWhy not?â Ryder inquired.
âYou donât.â Sophie remarked grimly, just trust me on that. Now are you okay, do you need me to stay with you a while longer?â
âNo, weâve gots it from here.â Riley announced, wanting to be rid of the older girl quickly, so that she could talk with her siblings in peace.
As soon as Sophie departed, the pups turned towards each other. âDoes anyone else have the feeling that these pups are bad news?â Ryder asked.
âMaybe not all of them.â Paisley amended, âbut Fabian and Sophie seem very âspicious.â
âl agree.â Parker nodded. âWe canât trust them, theyâre up to something.â
âYouâre rightâ Riley affirmed. âBut we still have to find a way to get out of here, and we canât do that without monies.â
âAre you really suggesting that we steal?â Paisley gasped.
âItâs like they said.â Parker sighed, âwe donâ have a choice.â
