Chapter 154
The Luna and her Quadruplet Pups
3rd Person âShhh, youâre gonna wakes him!â Paisley, whispered, scolding her brothers when they started to get a little too rowdy at Ethanâs bedside.
âWhen is he gonna gets up, anyway?â Parker frowned. âHeâs been sleeping forevers!â
âMommy says we haves to give him time.â Riley reminded him, peeking up over the edge of the bed.
âHe looks really sleepy.â
âWell a course he does.â Ryder responded wryly, everyone looks sleepy when theyâre sleeping.â
âYou know what I mean.â Riley countered archly. â
Like he needs rest.â
âAre you pups being good?â Lindaâs voice sounded at the doorway. Sheâd been checking in at the nurses station when the pups disappeared from her side. Of course, it didnât take her long to find them at all. Theyâd been trying to sneak into Ethanâs room all night, not understanding the hospitalâs rules about visiting hours.
âYes Auntie Linda.â They chimed in unison.
âAre you sure about that?â Ethanâs groggy voice surprised them all, and five sets of feet left the ground as they positively leapt into the air.
âDaddy!â Ryder, Riley, Parker and Paisley were instantly at his side, clambering around him in excitement.
âHello pups.â He grinned, still not awake enough to open his eyes. âIâm sorry if I scared you.'â
âWe werenât scared Daddy!â Parker insisted. Riley nudged him with her elbow, and he flushed. âAt least not very scared.â
âYou were so braveâ Paisley praised. âWe couldnâ really see the fights, but we could hear you!â
âYou were really mads.â Ryder adds, his eyes going wide at the memory.
âAre you all okay?â Ethan asked, reaching for them blindly. The pups went to him promptly, snugling up against the bed and eyeing the narrow mattress as if trying to figure out if there was room for them too.
Whereâs your Mommy?â
âWeâre fine. Mommy too â but sheâs in another roomâ Parker explained.
âCan we gets in bed with him?â Riley asked, turning to Linda.
âI donât think thatâs a good idea.â Their aunt cautioned. âThe doctor still has to come give his post-op report.â
âPost-op?â Ethan repeated dazedly. âI had surgery?
âYeah, Iâm afraid they wonât tell me any more details about what happened since lâm not family. And Janeâs in a completely different ward!ââ Linda shared.
Sheâs okay,â She added, sensing Ethanâs sudden worry.
âBut she was pretty bruised up between Anita and the guards â they wanted to do some extra tests just to make sure she wasnât injured internally.â
Ethan grunted, his brow furrowing with concern.
They couldnât put us in the same room?â
Sheâll be here as soon as they release her.â Linda promised. âYouâre just in different departments.â
Ethan grunted again, not seeming to care for this idea. âls there any news about Eric?â
âHeâs here too â under observationâ Linda explained. âHeâs been in the dungeons for weeks being interrogated. Heâs very thin and worn down, but he said thank you for killing his fatherâ
Ethan chuckled, âd do it again if I could.â
âKnock knockâ A bright, unfamiliar voice prompted Ethan to peek one eye open. A doctor in a white coat was leaning against the door frame, looking in on the scene with a somber smile. âAre you awake Mr. Blackwell?â
âMostly.â Ethan murmured, absentmindedly petting the pups. He was coming back to himself a little bit more with every moment that passed. âWill I be released soon?â
âIf l could have a moment alone with the Alpha?â
The doctor requested, looking to Linda.
âOf courseâ She agreed. âCome on kids, letâs go see if we can find some breakfast.â
âBut we wanna stay with Daddy!â The pups protested.
âOh yeah, more than you want⦠waffles?â Linda dangled the idea, knowing the children must be starving. Theyâd been up most of the night, and waffles were a sweet treat they didnât get very often.
Four little heads turned in her direction, and four pairs of eyes widened with intrigue. âWaffles?â
âUh-huhâ Linda confirmed knowingly, âwith butter and syrup, or ooh, strawberries and whipped cream?â
âItâs okay little ones.â Ethan laughed. âI wonât be offended if you pick waffles over me.â
âAre you sure?â Paisley inquired, reaching out to stroke his cheek.
Ethan caught her tiny hand and brought it to his l!ps. âI promise, go on now.â
As the pups skipped out with Linda, the doctor came forward. Ethan studied her expression, feeling a fresh wave of unease. The truth was that heâd been trying to piece together the events at the palace ever since waking. He felt very foggy, and his body was still heavily under the influence of anesthesia.
Still, he remembered his last thoughts before passing out, and heâd been trying to move his legs all through the conversation with the pups â to no avail.
Tell me,â He prompted the doctor. âThe surgery was on my spine?â
She nodded. âlâm very sorry, Mr. Blackwell.â His heart sank, and Ethan suddenly felt like his entire world was slipping away. âYou came in with a very acute spinal cord injury. You were bitten near your lumbar and while the laceration itself didnât sever the cord, it did result in significant swelling and bleeding, enough to cut off the nerves your brain uses to communicate to your lower body. We went into the OR hoping to drain enough blood to reduce the swelling and repair the injury, but unfortunately we were unsuccessful.â
âAnd what does that mean exactly?â Ethan questioned, fearing he already knew the answer.
âlâm afraid youâre looking at a total loss of function from the waist down. Thereâs a possibility that one day the condition can be reversed with physical therapy and additional surgeries, but in all likelihood, the condition is permanent.â The doctor replied gently.
âYouâre saying Iâm paralyzed?â Ethan clarified, the words feeling very strange and foreign on his tongue.
Iâll never walk again?â
âIâm sorry, but yes.â The doctor confirmed.
Will l be able to shift?â Ethan couldnât process any of this information, but the questions continued pouring out of him. He had to know how bad things were before he could begin to wrap his brain around this. âWhat about s*x?â
âIâm very sorry, Ethan.â The doctorâs apology was all the answer he needed, and he almost wanted to cut her off before she could finish, but he held himself back.
âNeither will be possible.â
âDoes my mate know?â He choked.
âNoâ The doctor sighed.âYouâre not legally married at the moment, so we didnât have the option without speaking to you first.â
âGooâ Ethan nodded. âNot a word about this to anyone.â
On the other side of the hospital, Jane was getting some very different news. âItâs confirmed Mrs.
Blackwell, youâre pregnant.â
Jane beamed so brightly the doctor couldnât help but laugh. âGood news, I take it?â
âThe best news.â Jane hiccuped, wiping tears of joy from her eyes. You have no idea what this means to me.â
âI have some idea.â The doctor smiled. âBut you have to start being more careful! No more racing into danger and fighting wolves twice your size.â
âTrust me, that was a fluke -I donât normally do that sort of thing.â Jane promised.
âWeâll get you on some prenatal vitamins immediately. Youâre a little underweight and lâd feel much better if you put on a few pounds before we release you.â The doctor advised, eyeing Janeâs chart.
âOh please donât make me stay until thenâ Jane begged. âl promise Iâll get really fat when I go home, Iâve been under a lot of stress and it will be easier to take care of myself if my life can get back to normal sooner rather than later.â
âOkay, but I want you to make yourself an appointment with your OBGYN as soon as you get home.â
The doctor cautioned. âAnd you need to rest in the meantimeâ
âl donât know if thatâs entirely possible. I have four pups already and my mate just had surgery.â Jane shared.
This baby needs you to take it easy, Jane.â The doctor replied sternly. âEvery time you feel yourself getting stressed again, just remind yourself of that.
âOkayâ Jane nodded, taking a deep breath. It was daunting to think about the mess waiting for them back home, but the idea that she and Ethan were going to have another baby⦠that they could go through it all together this time⦠made her happier than sheâd been in a very long time. She was still grinning like a fool as she departed the office, already dreaming of the tiny life growing inside her.
How would the pups react to learning they were going to have more siblings? Would Ethan want to get remarried? Oh Goddess, what if she was carrying multiples again? Could she really handle growing their pack? Remembering the doctorâs words as her thoughts began to spiral, she focused only on the joy. Whatever else happened, she was going to have another precious pup, another love of her life.
And speaking of the first love of her life⦠l canât wait to tell Ethan.
