Chapter 53

Deaf Wish

The morning came way too early, considering the short amount of time I had to actually sleep. Luckily, my sister woke me up today, because I wasn't wearing my watch to wake me up, I must have forgotten to put it around my wrist last night. Reluctantly, I got out from under my warm blanket, turning on my phone while opening the window and breathing the fresh air that entered my room to get rid of the disgusting stench in here.

Good morning beautiful, hope you slept well. I'll pick you up in an hour, you're probably not up yet though.

His message was the first thing that popped up on my screen, making me grin automatically like the idiot I am. Well, at least I can't be blamed, since that's not exactly my fault.

I head over to the bathroom, leaving the window opened while getting ready in the other room, trying to cover up the not fading hickey and coming back soon after. Standing in front of my huge closet I try to decide what to wear, choosing a normal brownish t-shirt and black shorts, standard if you ask me. While pulling the shirt over my head, I have a free view on the scars that I haven't been paying attention to a lot these days. Ever since Nathan and I talked about them, I'm way more confident with having them on my body. He had said that he liked me for the person I am and was.

Fully dressed and ready to go, I scurried down the stairs, greeting my parents with a cheerful good morning. "I'm so glad you seem happier today. And we both can't wait to meet your new friend. Aren't we, Alan.", she pinched the grumpy man in the arm, earning an annoyed side glance and a small nod, before his head disappeared behind the papers he was reading."Ignore him, we really are.", my mother smiled, her blue eyes sparkling in the light of the morning sun that entered through the window to our left.

Alex joined us soon after, Just in time as Nathan wrote me that he's waiting outside. My mother saw us both off, closing the door behind us with a charming smile on her face. My heart started to pick up it's pace as I walked over to his black pickup, earning a wink from the driver sitting inside it. This would be our first day as an official couple and I'm kinda anxious to whether or not we are going to tell the others.

The others? There is no Claire or Dillon, there is just Mika and we might as well tell him since he already assumed that we were dating. My sister and I hurried to take our seats, greeting Nathan while buckling up. As my eyes met with his for the first actual time today, I couldn't help but grin at him, so did he. I really wanted to kiss, but with my sister in the back...well, she did see us before, so might as well. Without further hesitation, I leaned into his lips, smiling into them slightly. He immediately returned the kiss, maintaining it sweet and innocent.

"It's good to see.", we parted and looked at each other for a little while longer, before completely leaning back into our seats. "It is.", he answered, starting up the engine and driving us towards our school. Suddenly my watch vibrated, displaying a message from my sister, which was odd, since she was sitting right behind me.

You guys are really sweet together, would have never imagined you to get in a relationship that fast. Mom told me that you'll be inviting a friend over for dinner,I'm guessing she meant Nathan.

I looked over my shoulder, eying the girl sitting behind me and nodding slowly, before turning back to the front. Yet again, my watch vibrated.

Awesome! What I wanted to ask,are you and Nathan going to prom together?

I had thought about that too, not sure if I should ask him or not.

I don't know, should I ask him?

I felt a little guilty for not talking to my boyfriend while he was driving but I guess there is really no other way than staying silent, if we don't want to cause an accident or anything. We reached the school pretty fast, entering the parking lot as my watch vibrated.

I don't know, but it would be a great opportunity to get you guys official, you know.

Honestly, I don't necessarily want to be found out by the whole school, it was awful enough when they found out that I was deaf. My sister and I decided to drop the subject for now, not wanting to exclude Nathan from our secret conversation we had in the car. We got out headed over to the school building, being greeted by the prom committee which started handing out flayers to the students that passed through the entrance to get to class.

"-you'll come.", a girl with extremely long black hair and friendly amber colored eyes held out one of the light blue tinted papers towards me, a wide smile narrowing her eyes to a minimum. I've seen her before, she's one of the seniors and quite popular with the other students at this school and even the one next town, where she used to be student body president. Why I know that? Because she's one of Claire's closer friends next to me, her name is Junia.

I took the flayer, skipping through it for a second, before looking back at her. "I rarely see you anymore, is everything okay between you and Claire?", she's always been quite nosy, well, to be expected from a formal president."Everything is fine, thanks.", I searched for Nathan who was talking to girl in the hallway. I couldn't see his face but the chick in front of him seemed rather flustered, her gaze dropping down to the floor multiple times.

Even though, I knew that I have nothing to worry about, there was still a weird sting in my heart as I saw her smiling at him like she had some kind of chance at winning his heart. Sorry sister, he's already taken. I entered the building, waiting across the hallway for the two to finish their talk, watching their every move. The girl was rather tall, almost as tall as Nathan himself, her chocolate brown hair tied up to a bun. Face full full full of makeup, do I have to add anything else? Maybe the short crop top and hot pants she was wearing. In other words, she is was at Claire would warn me about.

Suddenly, her expression changed and she glared at Nathan as he shook his head in denial. I'd really want to listen to their conversation right now. She turned on her heels, which were probably about five centimeters, and stormed off. Nathan shook his head once more, staring after the girl with pure amusement on his face. He turned around a few times, like he was searching for something and I guess he found it as his eyes locked with mine. He walked over to me, hands tugged into his pockets and head slightly tilted. "What's wrong?", he knew something was off the second he saw me and that's kinda weird if you ask me.

"It's nothing, but who was that girl you talked to? She was glaring at you like you told her how ugly she is.", I crack a smile as he started to laugh. "Oh, it's nothing like that, although I did piss her off, I guess. She asked me, if I wanted to go to prom with her, like, what even, I never talked to her before.", he scratched the back of his head, grinning at me. "Anyway, let's get to class, before we're too late.",it's like he almost reached out for my hand, but decided not too, pushing both of them deeper into the pockets of the jeans shorts he was wearing. I'm glad he didn't though, not here in school where everyone could see us and start spreading rumors.

We walked to class in silence, but every once in a while, our hands or shoulders brushed each other, sending shivers down my spine almost immediately. Why is there so much affection in only one single, simple touch?

Entering the classroom, almost every pair of eyes was on us, embarrassment making me keep my head low and gaze towards the gray floor. They must be curious after the scenario that played in this room yesterday. I felt Nathan touch my shoulder lightly, trying to get me to read his lips. "-sit in the back.", was all I caught after I reluctantly looked up at him. Simply nodding, I followed him as he lead us to the back of the room, which was practically empty. I wasn't sure if I was even allowed to sit so far away from the teacher, since I have to read his lips from this distance.

Some of the students kept turning around towards us, weird looks on their faces. I felt so uncomfortable that I wanted to just run away again, but I knew I couldn't pull that off, not after yesterday at least. A sudden wave of nausea hit me as my former best friend and sister by heart entered the room. Not only were the looks on me now, but also on her, jumping back and forth like they were expecting us to slit each other's throats. Claire glanced at the two of us, before sitting down on her regular place, where I would be sitting next to her.

I didn't want us to fight anymore, too big was the desire to just go talk to her, but honestly,I didn't even know how to do that. What should I say to her? Start a regular conversation or just apologize for being such an idiot? I don't know and this uncertainty is crushing me beneath it. Nathan grabbed my hand, luckily we have double tables at our school, so it was easy for us to hide it underneath the brown wooden surface. He gave it a light squeeze, flashing me a reassuring smile. How could I never deserve someone as perfect and caring as him?

My watch vibrated indicating the start of the first period and sure enough, our teacher entered, her eyes scanning through the rows, before stopping at me. "Why are you sitting in the back, Sky?", although it was harder to read her lips from that far, it wasn't impossible. "Uhm, is that not okay?",answering a question by simply returning another question is the best way out of situations like these, I read that on the internet once."No, it's fine, we're not doing anything today anyway. Let's just watch a movie or something.", she smiled, her small frame causing her to get mistaken for a student quite often. I watched her closely as she put her natural red hair into a high ponytail, while talking to a few kids in the front rows.
