Chapter 59
Deaf Wish
Something around my wrist vibrates and for the first few seconds, I'm too confused as I try to figure out what it is. I sit up straight, the warm blanket slipping down my body as I rub my itching eyes. This night was way too short, or at least the parts where I actually slept. My head hurts, pulsing with every beat of my heart, which made things even more uncomfortable than they already were. With another heavy sigh, I force myself to get up and fix myself for the last day of school. The only thing that's going to happen today is that we get out report cards, after that we are free to leave and get ready for prom which is held later that evening.
I stumble over to my door and across the hallway towards the bathroom, which was unoccupied to my luck. With the speed of a turtle walking through a field of peanut butter, I get ready and head back over to my room, my thoughts being left behind on the trip over here. I feel somewhat passive, like it's not actually me, putting on clothes and turning the airplane mode of my phone off. It's more like I'm being controlled, my actions seeming unfamiliar, even though I've been doing the same things for as long as I can remember. My watch vibrates, gaining my attention faster than a blink of an eye.
Good morning baby, I hope you slept well, do you want to go out and have breakfast somewhere? You can bring Alex if you want to.
Breakfast with Nathan? Sounds like the perfect thing after a stressful night. I'll have to ask Alex if she wants to join us. I put my phone in my pocket, exiting my room and heading down the stairs towards the kitchen where, just like every morning, my mother and sister were already sitting at the counter, talking with each other.
"Good morning.", I smile tiredly, receiving two wide grins from the two females. "Good morning to you too. I hope you slept well.", my mother places alight kiss on my forehead. "It was okay, oh and Alex, Nathan asked if we want to go out and have breakfast together, do you want to come with us?", I look past my mother who was standing in front of me."No, you two have fun, I already ate a bunch of pancakes and scrambled eggs.", she winks before biting into her last remaining pancake, like she wanted to proof her statement correct. "Okay, suit yourself.", I sit down next to her, pulling my phone out of my pocket and answering Nathan.
Good morning, sleep was rather rare this night, but oh well. Alex already ate, so it's just going to be the two of us.
I waited for him to answer, heading outside as soon as he gave the okay. Even more than the last few days, I was really looking forward to seeing him this morning and even getting to do something before school. Seeing Nathan sitting in his truck I can't help but break a smile, waving over to him as I make my way to the vehicle. I receive a wink from the driver as I stand in front of the rolled down window, leaning inside to peck his lips. "How are you?", his fingers push my hair back a little, since I didn't really do anything with it this morning. "Well, now I'm fine.", I response with a wide grin and a slight blush displayed on my face. "Then I'm glad I could safe the day.",Nathan smiles broadly at his own statement.
Sometimes he's like a dork, but loveable that is.
"So, are you up for some food?", he asks, one of his hands rests on the steering wheel."Sure.", with that, I make my way around the car and onto the passenger seat, buckling up while he starts the engine. He told me about this breakfast place he found while strolling through town, driving there in quite the speed. Everything seems cramped today, even at this early hour, there are a lot of people walking down the streets and a sudden sense of restlessness following their movements. It doesn't really affect me that much these days, it's more the uneasiness that keeps tabs on me for most of the time.
We arrive at a rather small diner, hidden behind trees and a larger building next to it. How is he always finding these places? It looks more homely, just like the café we first went to and where I confessed, the windows allowing a nice overview of the whole interior and kitchen. Not many people are sitting inside, so it should be nice and quiet in there. Unless there are kids, then it won't be all that quiet. Nathan and I exit the car, the heat being even in the morning hours quite hot already. He takes my hand in his, opening the door and leading us inside. We are greeted by a lot of posters, mostly old Rock 'n' Roll or Jazz themed, but also newer ones, like Adele. A waiter walks up to us almost immediately, a soft smile on his lips.
"Welcome to Dad's cabin, just the two of you?", Nathan nods, smiling back at the tall blonde guy who leads us over to one of the empty tables next to another couple, students most likely. "Can I get you something to drink? Like coffee, hot chocolate or various different juices?", something must be odd about the way he talks, because reading his lips is quite the challenge. I exchange a quick glance with Nathan who gestures for me to go first with the order. "Uhm, I'll have a hot chocolate please.", receiving another small smile, he takes it down before looking back up and at the boy sitting across from me. "Make that two.", the waiter nods, seeming happy about our order. He left after handing us the menu, stalking over to another group of adults who wanted to pay.
"Say, does he have an accent or something?", I whisper over to Nathan who immediately cracks a silent laugh. "Yup, and one hell of an accent. I think he's from Texas or something. Didn't expect you to be able to read his lips.",he places his menu flat on the surface of the table instead of holding it up, scanning through it. "That's why I'm asking, it was really hard.", I say, as I read through the different things I could eat. After a few minutes of deciding, I finally set my mind on scrambled eggs with bacon and toast. Very basic, I know.
The waiter comes back with two steaming cups of hot chocolate and a smile on his lips. What a cheerful guy. "Have you already decided on what to eat?", this time Nathan goes first, ordering two ham and cheese sandwiches. Waiting for him to write that down, I place my order, receiving multiple nods from him before he left again.
"I'm looking forward to this evening, I bet it will be cool.", Nathan takes a tiny sip of his cup, putting it back down after realizing how hot it is. "I hope. Claire will probably be there as well.", I bite my lower lip at the thought of her. "It'll be fine, you'll see. In a short while, you guys will be best friends again.", he flashes me a reassuring smile, placing his warm hand over mine. "Let's hope for the best. Before I forget.", there was another person we haven't heard of In a while, "Did you hear anything from Mika, he's been sick the last few days?" Nathan scratches the back of his head, nodding a few times. "I did, he asked me how you are because he heard of what happened between you and Claire. Sorry, I completely forgot to tell you.", with an apologetic glint in his eyes he interlaced our fingers.
"It's fine, but why didn't he ask me himself?", I tilt my head a little, enjoying the feeling of his warm hand around mine. "No idea, maybe he didn't want you to think about it too much, you know, forget for at least a few moments.", I nod, staring at his lips in somewhat deep in thoughts. Nathan didn't say anything else after that, waiting for me to snapback to reality on my own. The food was done quite fast, much to my surprise as the waiter placed our plates in front of the two of us and adding a barely readable "Enjoy your meal".
Of course Nathan didn't start by trying his own food, no, he stole a spoonful of my scrambled eggs, eating it with an almost completely innocent smile. "It's good, you should try it.", he informs, cracking into a short laughter."Well, I'm glad you like it then.", I can't help but laugh as well, this time actually starting to eat my food. And he was right,it's actually really good.
As we ate we talked about summer break, the things he planned to do, or planned us to do and smirking a devilishly hint on his face as he invited me to come to his hometown with him. "It'll be fun, I can teach you how to ice-skate", was his strongest argument next to meeting his friends and spending time together. "We'll see.", I laugh, shoving the last piece of bacon inside my mouth and emptying the cup of hot chocolate that has cooled down. "You should though.", he really wasn't gonna let go of this topic until I agree, is he? "Fine, I'll go with you. I just have to ask my parents first.", I sigh with a relieved smile as he finally stopped begging me and just continued eating his sandwiches. If things keep going the way they do between Claire and I, there probably won't be all that much to do during the three months long break anyway.
We both finish at the same time, waiting for our waiter to notice our empty plates and bringing us the bill. "Was everything okay?", I simply nod, unlike Nathan, who complimented the food he had ordered. And after a short fight over who should pay, which he won, we left the dinner and started heading over to the school building with only a few minutes to spare. We both head over to our classroom for the last time this school year, sitting down in the back and ignoring the stares that followed us there.
