Chapter 76
When His Eyes Opened
Chapter 76
If Ben had mentioned this when he arrived at the house, Avery never would have gotten into his car.
âMr. Schaffer, I know that all of you want to get on Elliotâs good side-âAvery began to say.
âWhat do you mean? Havenât you ever gotten presents for your friends?â Ben interjected with a smile.
âHe always gets us something for our birthdays.â
âSo, you donât get him a gift just because he told you not to? That just shows that you donât see him as
a friend at all, but as a boss,â Avery said. âI donât think you should drag me into this. If I accept your gift
on his behalf, it would be the same as me accepting a gift from him. If thatâs the case, I wonât be able to
take pleasure in reprimanding him when he makes me angry in the future.â
Ben was bewildered.
Take pleasure in reprimanding him? How exactly does Avery treat Elliot every day?
Ben began to suspect that his boss had a masochistic side to him.
âYou should think of something else! Iâm leaving,â Avery said, then turned and began to walk away.
Ben immediately reached out and grabbed her arm.
âMiss Tate, Elliotâs birthday this year is different from the ones before,â he said.
He had already prepared the perfect script, and his professional acting instantly silenced Avery.
âIt was after his last birthday that he had gotten into that accident and that rendered him a vegetable. At
the time, the doctors said that he didnât have much longer to live⦠None of us expected him to pull
through, but he woke up in the end. Itâs a good thing he did, too. Otherwise, he wouldnât be able to
celebrate his birthday this yearâ¦â
Averyâs heart turned as soft as cotton.
She put herself in his shoes and thought about how painful it would have been if she was the one who
was in a coma after getting into a car crash.
All Ben wanted was to celebrate Elliotâs birthday and get him a gift to cheer him up. Was that so wrong?
âDonât worry, Miss Tate. We wonât give you anything too expensive. I hope you will be able to accept it
with ease,â added Ben.
Avery gestured at the jewelry counter and said, âEverything here is too expensive. Letâs go somewhere
else.â
She finally gave in!
âDo you need some beauty products, Miss Tate? I see youâve got makeup on. Should we get some new
makeup products? Youâll need some makeup remover to go along with that, right?â
Ben was in full swing.
âYou have slender wrists, Miss Tate. Iâm sure a bracelet would look good on you! Letâs get one! Itâs
pretty cheap!
âWhat do you think of these brandâs bags, Miss Tate? Letâs get something classy! A classic style would
go with everything and you can itâs big enough to carry a bunch of stuff! Itâs both stylish and practical!
âMiss Tate⦠Your shoes are looking worn out. Letâs get you a new pair! I know a store that sells flats
that
last forever. Iâll take you there!â
Avery saw a whole new side to Ben.
It was like he had never-ending spirit and energy.
He also seemed to have a vast knowledge of womenâs products.
He was able to easily list out everything from the best tampons to the stores with the most comfortable
lingerie.
He truly was womankindâs best friend.
Avery would have been less cautious with him if it were not for the fact that he was Elliotâs CFO.
After spending the whole morning shopping, her entire body began to ache.
She spotted a cafe and immediately went in and took a seat. She refused to walk into another store.
âWhat would you like to eat, Miss Tate? Go ahead and order whatever you want,â Ben said as he
passed a menu to her.
All Avery could feel was fatigue, so she was not very hungry.
âDonât call me out for things like this again, Mr. Schaffer. Iâm only helping you out this once.â
There were about twenty to thirty gifts in total.
Avery felt restless and uneasy.
She should not have given in so easily.
However, when she thought of Elliot now, his face was less loathsome to her than before.
Her head began to ache.
Ben took a sip of water, then said casually, âSure thing. Thanks for your help today! You havenât gotten
back to Charlie Tierney with an answer, have you?â
âNot yet,â Avery responded. âHe sent me an email last night with a revised proposal. I havenât gotten a
chance to look at it.â âHeâs really pulling out all the stops for a chance to work with you!â Ben said, then
