The Billionaire’s Baby: Chapter 22
The Billionaire’s Baby (Seduced by the Billionaire Book 3)
AMANDINE SAT ON THE BED, looking at Gavinâs ring. After a time, someone placed a hand on her shoulder. Startled, she looked up.
âYou okay?â Brooke said, settling next to her.
âYeah. No. Maybe.â Amandine buried her face in her hands. âDamn it.â
âWhat did she say?â
Amandine told Brooke everything. As she went through it, she realized Catherine was right. Amandine would never know the true reason Gavin wanted to keep her. He was always so busy, and babies took a lot of time and effort. Countless children grew up with divorced parents. Meredith hadnât even bothered to get married before having a kid, and no one from his family seemed to care.
So why was he insisting on staying together? âAvoiding personal defeatâ seemed like a feeble excuse, something heâd made up on the fly so he didnât have to give her the real reason.
And if it werenât, why should she care about his personal defeat? Catherine was right. What about Amandineâs future? What about what she wanted? She needed more than âavoiding personal defeatâ to stay with Gavin. If he hadnât figured out that nothing less than love would do after three years and three monthsâ¦
âI hate to say it, but Catherine has a point,â Brooke said. âYou deserve a man like the one she talked about. You shouldnât stay with a guy who doesnât love you just because youâre pregnant.â
Amandine rubbed her temples. Sheâd been content, even hopeful, until Catherine had shown up. If only she could erase everything her cousin had said from her memoryâ¦
Eighteen more years. Did she want to spend that much time with a man who didnât love her just because they had a baby together? What would she do if she realized her situation was really hopeless? Would she have the courage to start over?
Even if she did, would it be possible in her mid-forties?
Gavin stalked inside, his face dark and grim.
Amandine forced a smile. âHow was your visit? Everything go well?â
He nodded. âAs expected. Mother sends her regards.â
âLunaâs making dinner.â
âI donât have time.â
Of course .
âI have to return to the office soon,â he added.
No surprise there , either . âIâll ask her to pack something for you then.â When she started to rise, Gavin stopped her.
âBrooke, can you give us a moment?â he asked.
âSure.â She left.
Gavin sat next to Amandine. âWhat did Catherine say?â His gaze bore into hers, like he could will her thoughts to surface on her face.
âThis and that.â She shrugged. âShe wanted to return your wedding band.â Amandine handed it to him. âSo now you have two.â
âThat I do.â He stared at the original ring, then took the replacement off and put it in his jacket pocket. He threaded the original ring onto the finger.
âI thought about what you asked me last night and⦠Iâm wondering why you married me.â She looked at him, at the old ring now back on his hand, hoping and waiting.
He looked back at her, his dark gaze shuttered.
âWhy, Gavin? You couldâve married anybody. It didnât have to be me.â
He hesitated, then finally said, âI thought youâd make a good wife. Youâre smart and loyal andââ
âIâm not a dog, Gavin.â
âI never said you were.â
She jumped to her feet, hugging herself. âYou might as well have. Your actions have proved it over and over again. I was just too stupid to see it.â
âAmandine, youâre upset.â
âUpset? Iâm furious!â She flung an arm. âDo you have any idea what itâs like to be constantly pushed onto others because your husband canât be bothered? You started hiring people to groom me, feed meâdress me, for fuckâs sakeâlike Iâm some kind of helpless puppy.â
âThatâs notââ
âDid you really think Josephine could fix me?â
âJesus, I thought having clothes selected for you would lessen your workload after you started doing all those fundraisers and charity work.â
âNo. You hired her so she could make sure I wouldnât wear anything that would embarrass you.â
âOh forâ Amandine, wear whatever you like. Okay?â
âHow can I, when Josephine doesnât buy anything that I like?â
âThen tell her what you want.â
âShe only listens to you.â
âThen fire her!â
âHow am I going to fire somebody you hired without consulting me? She works for you, not me.â
Gavin rubbed his face. âWeâre a couple, Amandine. Weâre supposed to be able to talk about stuff like this if itâs been bothering you so much.â
She folded her arms. âWhen?â
âWhat?â
âWhen are we supposed to talk about it? When youâre at work? You never have time to talk. Our âmovie nightsâ? They were your idea, but you hardly ever made it on time. And now you donât come at all.â She started pacing. âFor the love of god, Gavin, I didnât even get to tell you I was pregnant! You had to find it out because I dropped a sonogram printout.â
âYou had an opportunity to tell meââ
âWhen? In the private jet? Which you bought forâ¦I donât even know why you bought it since you know I donât travel much. Or during our anniversary dinner? Oh wait, thatâs right.â She snapped her fingers. âYou were with Catherine.â
âCalm down, Amanââ
âIâm through being calm!â She slashed the air with her hand. âYou always give me things to make up for the fact that you never have the time or the energy for me. Iâm an afterthought, something you take for granted. But you wonât give me anything of yourself, not even the baby, since youâre going to take it from me if I decide to leave you. Ridiculous, isnât it, when you and I both know that you donât have the time for a baby.â
âThatâs enough!â Gavin stood up. âWhatâs wrong with you? What the hell did Catherine say? That I came on to her? I did no such thing. Sheâs lying.â
âShe didnât have to tell me that. I trust you. I hope the feeling is mutual.â
âYeah, well, Iâm an expert on investing, and Iâm not investing myself in anything or anyone I can lose. To Jacob, or anyone else. Itâs not worth it,â Gavin said, then looked somewhat surprised, as though it wasnât something heâd ever planned to speak out loud.
Suddenly it dawned on Amandine. Sheâd heard whispers of Jacob stealing Gavinâs girlfriends. Heâd ended up with Catherine, too. Amandine had assumed it was just a rumor, but maybe not. âYou think Iâd leave you for Jacob?â
Breaths sawed in and out of Gavin. âNot for Jacob, no.â
How could she have not seen how hopeless their situation was? If sheâd had the guts to speak her mind sooner, they wouldâve avoided wasting so much time. âNothing can make me leave you except yourself. I married you because I loved you,â she spoke through the cold lump in her throat. âThereâs no point in continuing this joke of a reconciliation anymore. Iâm going to divorce you, Gavin. And no, you cannot have the baby. Iâm going to fight for it with everything I have. Iâm entitled to at least that much.â If I canât have your love , I want to have something of you âthe baby we created together , so I can give it all the love in my heart . âBut you can keep your money. All of it. I donât want it.â
âAmandineâ¦â
âI canât live with you like this, Gavin. Iâm not happy.â
His Adamâs apple worked. âAre youâ¦are you truly unhappy? With me?â
She nodded, closing her eyes with the pain of her heart splintering. âIâm miserable, Gavin. I canât live my life feelingâ¦unwanted.â
It took a while before he finally said, âI see. Iâll have my lawyer call yours.â
When she opened her eyes, he was gone.
* * *
Gavin stumbled into the Bentley waiting outside. âOffice,â he croaked.
If Thomas noticed anything odd, he didnât comment. The car pulled smoothly away.
Gavinâs head rolled listlessly until it rested against the back of the leather seat. His gut twisted as he replayed her words. Heâd never known heâd made her so miserable. She knew she was risking a nasty legal battle by trying to take the baby with her, and still she didnât care, so long as she could be free of him.
He racked his brain. Where had he gone wrong? Had his mother been right, and it was a case of too little too late? Was it something Catherine had said?
Heâd focused most of his life on work, trying to multiply his wealth and his clientsâ in every way he knew how. He was good at it too, and beating the marketâwinningâmade him feel like a god. It was as addictive as cocaine, and he craved the high from each victory.
But it wasnât worth making Amandine miserable.
His mother was right. What could he do with another twenty billion? He shouldâve paid more attention, listened to his gut, and realized Amandine was not at all like the other women out there, like Damien had said. It shouldnât have taken this long for Gavin to realize heâd been a bad husband, who took advantage of Amandineâs good, accommodating nature.
He sighed. No matter how much Gavin wanted to hold Catherine responsible for poisoning his marriage, he ultimately had nobody but himself to blame. If he hadnât been so blind, Catherine wouldnât have been able to influence Amandine. And Amandine wouldnât have decided to cut her losses.
What should I do?
He was good at finding out what needed to be done. But now no matter how he examined the problem, there was only one course of action left for him to take, except it wouldâve been preferable to stick his finger in a live socket.
Closing his eyes against the ache in his heart, he pulled out his phone and dialed Craigâs number.
âGavin. Whatâs going on?â Craig asked, not wasting time with how are you? s. Clients didnât call this late at night when they were doing well.
âAmandine wants to leave me. Told me to keep all my money.â
âCongratulations.â
A bitter taste spread in his mouth. What kind of lawyer congratulated his client on an impending divorce he didnât want? âI intend to provide a large settlement for her.â
âWhy? I thought you said she didnât want any money.â Gavin could hear a fiduciary scowl in Craigâs voice.
âItâs something Iâm offering. Thatâs the least I can do.â
âAll right. Depending on how much is on the tableâ¦could be a pretty smart strategy. That way she canât change her mind about money later and claim you took advantage.â
Gavinâs hand tightened around the phone. He hated Craigâs reasonable voice. Never mind he was just doing his job. âShe can have half my assets.â
Craig sputtered. âHalf! Thatâs way too much, Gavin. Half a percent is plenty enough, given the prenup.â
âJust do it. Thatâs why I hired you.â
âYou hired me to give you good legal advice.â
âI am the client.â
Craig sighed. âYou sure you donât want to think it over? Thereâs no rush.â
âNo. My mindâs made up. But there are some conditions. Here are the most important onesâ¦â
