Chapter 9

7. A Divorce of Convenience

Divorced Yet Married

Ishika's POV

Yesterday, I decided with Aditi that I should start job hunting since it will take time to find a position due to my lack of work experience.

I pursued my education to become a teacher, inspired by my mother, who was a teacher herself. However, after completing my studies, my uncle arranged my marriage to the Malhotra family to strengthen his position in the business world. The Malhotra family is well-respected, and they believe that having their daughter-in-law work would degrade their reputation in high society.

Now, I find myself without any work experience, making it challenging to enter a good private school as a fresher. I've decided to give it a try; I have emailed as many schools as I can with my CV and applied for several vacancies listed on their profiles.

Aditi has also tried to advocate for me at her school for an interview opportunity. Now, I am waiting for some calls from these schools.

Aditi and I met during my B.Ed. course, and we immediately connected, becoming best friends. We are alike in almost every way. She has always stood by me when I needed someone, and whenever I sought advice, she was there for me. Aditi always tries to help me when I feel lost, providing support and guidance. She truly is the best friend anyone could ask for. I feel lucky to have her in my chaotic life.

Author's POV

At Malhotra Enterprises

Sahil sat at his desk, the weight of the previous night heavy on his shoulders. A dull throb pulsed in his temples, intensifying his already sour mood.

Rajat, his assistant, sensed the tension crackling in the air. He had witnessed this storm before-Sahil's dark clouds could ruin the day for everyone. Desperate to lift his boss's spirits, Rajat racked his brain, seeking a solution that could pierce through the gloom.

Suddenly, a spark ignited within him. He hurried out of the office, determination driving each step. Moments later, he returned, his heart racing with hope. In his hands was a steaming cup of black coffee, its rich aroma filling the air with a promise of comfort.

He placed the cup delicately on Sahil's desk, the clatter of ceramic punctuating the silence. "Sir," he said, his voice steady yet cautious, "I thought you might need this."

Sahil's eyes flicked up, the shadows in them momentarily clearing as he took in the gesture. The warmth of the coffee seemed to challenge the chill surrounding him.

Rajat lingered for a moment, feeling the tension shift, he stepped back, leaving his boss alone with his thoughts.

For a moment, Sahil just stared at his coffee. He was thinking about the events of last night; he couldn't believe Ishika would behave like this with him.

He was fuming with anger, realizing that he had shown her too much leniency, which was why she was acting this way. He thought that if it weren't for his position as the heir of Malhotra Enterprises being at stake, he would have given her a divorce right at that moment.

But he couldn't do that now, as it would tarnish his reputation and jeopardize his position as CEO. Consequently, everything would be handed over to his good-for-nothing cousin, Ayaan Malhotra, who had been waiting for this moment.

He then started drinking coffee to soothe his headache, contemplating how to escape his situation.

Suddenly, there was a knock on his office door. Irritated, he called out, "Come in."

His friend and lawyer from a prestigious firm, Mr. Rajveer Khanna, entered with a smile and sat down across from Sahil.

He handed him a file and said, "Your matter has been resolved." Sahil merely nodded and replied, "Good."

Noticing Sahil's cold reaction to the news, Rajveer said, "I thought you would be delighted to hear this. No 'thank you' or appreciation?"

Sahil sighed deeply and replied, "It's not that; I truly appreciate your help, but right now I'm caught up in a personal matter."

Rajveer frowned and asked, "What's going on? Is everything alright?"

After a moment of hesitation, he finally spoke, his voice heavy with frustration.

"Ishika asked for a divorce," he said, running a hand through his hair. "I'm in a tight spot. I can't let this get out, not now. It could jeopardize my position as CEO. The board will see it as a sign of instability."

Rajveer listened quietly, tapping his fingers on the desk After a brief pause, he leaned forward with a faint smile.

"I might have a solution for you," he said calmly. "But you might not like it." he said with a smirk.

Sahil furrowed his brows, his voice tense "What is it?"

Rajveer cleared his throat, glancing around before leaning in "Why don't you give her a fake divorce decree to pacify her? She won't be able to tell it's fake. That will calm her down for now. After a year or so, when you've fully taken over as CEO of Malhotra Enterprises, the decision will be yours-whether to divorce her for real or not."

The air between them thickened with the weight of the suggestion, and Sahil's heart raced as he absorbed the gravity of what Rajveer had just proposed.

After contemplating his situation, he reluctantly agreed. With that, the two shifted their conversation to other matters.
