Canto 4 What Do We Have Here?
Keisha and the Rise of the Legacy
Keisha couldnât tell whether or not it was morning. The Dark Woods made it impossible for light to break through. Verona had to shake her awake to pull her from her sleep.
âCanât I sleep in, mamma?â Keisha moaned and buried her head into the pillow. The woody sweetness from it reminded her of maple syrup and made her mouth water. âItâs too early.â
âThe earlier, the better. We want to make good time to catch a blacksmith,â Verona replied.
Realizing that the voice was not her mamma, Keisha sat her head up and looked around. It took a moment to remember that she was a Legacy in the Inferno, and her mamma was nowhere to be found.
âOh,â Keisha mumbled. She flopped on her back, and tears welled in her eyes. Her big wild hair sprawled out as she stared at the ceiling. She wished that the other night was a nightmare, and she, and her mamma, were on the internet looking up staffs.
âHey.â
Keisha looked from the corner of her eye. Verona stood above her with something in her arms. âDonât let the despair linger; that can affect your Malia. Youâve got to keep moving, or else youâll never be able to help yourself and find your mamma.â
Keisha sniffed, wiping her nose and tears with her arm. Verona was right; Keisha knew this. If she wanted to find her ma, sheâd need to drag her butt out of bed and learn to fight so she could save her.
âYeahâ¦yeah, youâre right!â Keisha exclaimed, jumping from the bed. She fist-pumped the air, almost tripping on the long gown. Had Verona not been there to hold her upright, she would have busted her face on the wooden floor.
âMmm, energy, good. Youâll need it. Here are some of my clothes you can change into. You can get ready in the washroom; Iâve already drawn the bath.â
âOkay. Youâll teach me more about our magicâ¦I mean, Malia, right?â
Verona nodded. âYup, and Maleficio.â
Keisha scrunched her face. âMale-who?â
âItâs the opposite of Malia and used for evil. Iâll explain more when you get ready,â Verona told her before leaving back downstairs.
Keisha shivered, but she was eager to learn. She headed toward the washroom to get clean from the dirt, sweat, and grime from the day prior. After the bath, she got dressed and went downstairs to meet with Verona.
***
THE NEAREST VILLAGE WAS a quarter of a mile away, but the Dark Woods was always changing, and it would take them fifteen minutes to get to their destination.
âI donât think Iâm used to this kind of material,â Keisha mumbled and tugged at the burgundy tunic on her. The long white puffy sleeve were loose-fitting and the black leather pants were slightly big, but she was still able to move easily.
Keisha decided she would stay with her Timberlands since theyâd be useful for the journey. Verona had given her a black, hooded cloak to wrap around her shoulders to conceal her identity.
âStop complaining and stay close,â Verona said. She grabbed the hood and tossed it over Keishaâs head. Two portions of her big hair stuck out on each side. âWe canât have you sticking out like a sore thumbâyour eyes will give you away.â
âMy eyes?â Keisha pointed to her face. âWhat about them? Donât people have different color eyes?â
âNot like human eyes, no.â
There was a large fallen tree trunk that blocked their path. Verona jumped and grabbed the trunk's edges, placing one foot in front of the other. She placed one foot in front of the other to climb over it.
Keisha gaped at Veronaâs prowess and flexibility. She admired her strength and her ability to stay nimble.
Verona reached out a hand for Keisha to grab to help her climb. Verona grunted as she pulled Keishaâs arm.
One last tug and Keisha flailed over to the side and bumped into Verona, the two almost falling off the trunk. Verona secured her arms on Keishaâs shoulder so she wouldnât topple over.
Keishaâs heart jumped. She looked down, seeing how far she would have dropped and broken her leg.
âMaybe be a little more careful? We canât afford any mess-ups.â
Keishaâs cheeks reddened, nodding. The two eventually found their way back to the ground.
âAlright, letâs continue with a bit of training. I told you Iâd explain more about Malia and how it aids our Stanza to use Verses.â
They walked the dirt and rooted vine path. The dark forest was on either side of them. Keisha stayed close to Verona while keeping an eye out for any more Demiâs that lurked in the darkness.
âThe Stanzas had something called Circuit Gems?â Keisha asked, keeping her balance from tripping over upturned roots.
âThatâs right. Circuit Gems are based on the seven elements, and the stronger the Legacy, the stronger your Malia, the more potent your Verses will be. Legacies can learn five: Water, Fire, Earth, Air, and Light. Spirit can only be mastered by Shikariâand their bloodline, if theyâre strong enough.â
Keisha counted on her fingers and named all the elements. âSo that meansâ¦Darkness is left, right?â
âGood, and thatâs where Maleficio comes in. For us, thatâs when Verses are turned into Wild Verses and used for evil that cause negativity. Thatâs the only enchantment that can perform the Darkness element.â
The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.
âThatâs amazing! I mean, not about using Maleficio for evil, but how you know so much. Did you learn all this from your papà ? You must be very proud of him and have all kinds of stories about him. Did you two do anything together? For fun, me and papà would have a contest to see how many words we knew in different languages, like Latin, Greek, Russian, Spanish, Romanian, Kaixana, Chinese, and Japanese.â
Keisha prattled on about the different languages as she counted off on her fingers and smiled as memories of her papà came into her head. Verona stared at Keisha and the way she smiled so carelessly. For a moment, Veronaâs eyes gleamed before disappearing.
âBut of course papà always won. He said I was getting better. What did you and Mr. Virgil do?â
Verona raised her brow. âMister?â
Keisha shrugged. âWell, yeah, Iâm being polite, but I guess by how close our papáâs wereâ¦.â Keisha stopped mid-sentence to jump over a branch in her way. âI guess he should be âUncleâ Virgil.â
Keisha chuckled. However, Verona said nothing. Keisha's lips pressed staring at the back of Veronaâs head, wondering if she might have gone too far.
âWeâ¦wrote several books together,â Verona mumbled. âHe was a great Shikari but didnât care that Dante received the attention, he preferred to be in the background. He was a simple man, who loved a simple lifestyle, but when he wrote the Aeneid, that changedââ Verona suddenly stopped and peered around the forest.
âWhat changed?â Keisha asked. âDid something happen to it?â
âKeisha, shh,â Verona hushed her. She held her hand in the air to signal that something was lurking in the woods, watching them.
Keishaâs eyes grew wide, and she chewed on her lip. It wasnât until a low growl sent both girls on high alert when two creatures stepped in front of their pathâa lion, with a scorpion stinger for a tail, and a leopard with spikes and scales.
âDemiâs.â Verona stood protectively in front of Keisha, eyeing the two creatures as they circled them, though they didnât attack; instead, they eyeballed them with red slits.
âAnd what do we have here,â the leopard said, a hiss escaped its throat. The leopardâs tongue was like a snake.
âA Legacy andâ¦well thatâs intriguing, do you sense that?â the lion said to his friend, jutting its mane at Keishaâs expression.
The leopardâs eyes and tongue flickered. âOh, yes, yes, that power is strong and familiar.â
The lion growled. âYesâ¦familiar. Ah, wait, the girlâs eyes. Could it be?â
âDante Alighieri. The betrayer Shikari. Oh, how interesting this news is.â The leopard tilted its head back and let out a cackle that Keisha assumed was a laugh. âSurely, we can get something for turning her in.â
âYouâre not getting anything from this,â Verona said. âI advise the both of you to move away and let us pass, or else.â
Both of the Demiâs backed away as they barred their fangs.
âWe donât wish to pick a fight with the Daughter of Virgil,â the leopard said. âYou know as well as weââ
Verona sucked her teeth. âYou mustnât have heard me. Let. Us. Through.â
In a glimmer of bright white light, Verona called forth her Stanza.
The lion took a chance and pounced in Veronaâs direction. She shouted, âOnda fi Fuoco,â and a blast of flames came from her Stanza in the lionâs direction, burning its fur.
The Demiâs left the scene, growling behind them as they jumped from the treetops to evade any more devastating blows.
Verona returned to normal and sighed.
âWell, thatâs thatâare you okay?â
Keisha stood frozen as she stared in shock at what had happened. Veronaâs hardened expression softened when she touched Keishaâs shoulder.
âHey, weâre safe. We can keep moving. You donât need to be afraid.â
She wasnât sure if that was the case because it was also mixed with excitement.
Verona touched Keishaâs forehead with her hands and whispered the Verse, âSenza Paura.â Without fear. She recognized the words. And the tightness in her stomach and the racing of her heart disappeared.
Keisha took another deep breath and grabbed her chest.
Verona shook her head. âThat was a little too easy. We need to stay vigilant. That Demi was right, Legacies with no proper training or ordainment by the Monarchs are considered treason.â
Keisha tilted her head. âMonarchs?â
The two continued their journey.
Verona nodded. âEach town or city is run by one of the Thirteen Monarchs in the Inferno. They make up the rules, and the Natura Borne respect their power.â
âNatura Borne?â Keisha asked.
âPeople that are born in the Inferno.â
âDo you think the Monarchs could know what happened to my mamma?â Keisha asked.
âI have no way of knowing,â Verona said as they neared Aspara Village.
The exterior of the town was small, yet, several crowds of Natura Borne walked from one establishment to another. The housing and storefronts were connected, and others were separate stalls with vendors selling various knick-knacks on the streets.
âKeisha, come here for a second.â Verona reached her hand to cover her eyes.
âWhat are you doing?â
âIâm changing them violet, like mineâtravestimento.â Nothing happened, but Verona removed her hand from her face. âThere, that should hold for a while. Keep your hood on just in case, and donât look at anyone directly in the eye.â
âWhy did you need to change my eyes anyway?â
âBecause a Natura Borne has silver eyes, and if they notice yours are different, they will report it.â
She assumed if they found out, the Thirteen Monarchs would punish her. Keisha grabbed both edges of the cloak, and they headed for a blacksmithâs shop.
âIf anyone asks,â Verona whispered to her as they passed a few Natura Borne. âYouâre a resident of Dolent.â
âRight, got it, I donât know what that is, but got it.â
Verona shook her head, but they were already coming close to the blacksmith. âCome on, letâs hurry inside.â
***
âYou want what now, missy?â
âWell, clearly, I didnât stutter. I need you to make a Stanza for my friend. Iâm showing her the ropes.â Verona tried convincing the blacksmith. He was a tawny brown-skinned man who stood close to six feet tall with a bald head and a thick beard with bulging muscles.
âIâm from Dolent!â Keisha exclaimed. She was off to the side, examining the different weapons he had for any situation or creature.
The blacksmithâs silver eyes stared at Keisha and side glanced at Verona.
âRight, sheâs a trainee?â
âDonât judge a book by its cover, you know. Sheâs a real fighting machine.â
A clang brought Veronaâs attention back to Keisha, who had dropped a plate of armor that she had picked up to inspect. Seeing that she had an audience, Keisha hid the armor behind her back and gave them a toothy smile.
âUh-huh, dangerous. Look, whatever, you girls can be as tough as nails, but what you ask will take timeâ¦and money, which I donât think you two can afford.â
Verona grumbled. She placed her hand in her pocket to show him sparkly jeweled Shards of different colors, but the blacksmith shook his head, saying it wouldnât be enough.
âSir, please,â Keisha begged, coming over to the counter. âWe need that Stanza so I can protect myself.â
The blacksmith narrowed his eyes at her. Keisha forgot to look away and regretted speaking when she did. She was worried about the consequences or what the Monarchs would do to her if they found out she was here.
âGuess thereâs one thing you can do,â the blacksmith said. âWeâve got a She-Wolf problem, and if you can get rid of it, Iâll do this without pay.â
Keisha wanted to jump in victory.
âDeal,â Verona said. âAnd one last thing, do they still appear?â
âThe Mortal Light? Theyâre located in the Descent last someone seen them. They have eyes and ears on everything, but there are dangers on that path.â
Verona tapped the counter. âWeâll be fine; thanks for the heads up.â
The two of them left the store to handle the townsâ She-wolf problem. âWhoâs the Mortal Light?â Keisha asked, and her heart skipped a beat. âIs this someone who has answers to find my mamma?â
Verona grinned. âThey might be able to help find your papa, too.â
