Chapter 17

14 | INTO THE BAYOU THEY WENT

WAR OF HEARTS • hayley marshall

Khalia Mikaelson has wanted to kill her two brothers multiple times over the last millennia, but her desire to do so has never been as high as it was right now. The two have been bickering constantly since they’ve arrived at the Bayou and the female as been taking it under high consideration to leave them and search for Hayley on her own. The Mikaelson trio was near the werewolf encampments and Khalia was trying to listen if she could find the familiar double heartbeats that she has branded as Hayley’s.

“We should head south towards the water.” Elijah said and Khalia frowned.

“Why?” She asked but never got an answer as Klaus once again started to bicker with his eldest brother once again.

“You seem quite determined to find the little wolf.”  The Hybrid baited with a smirk on his lips. Khalia threw a glare in his direction.

“If I'm moving too fast for you, Niklaus, you're welcome to wait in the car. Do be certain to leave the windows down.” And that was when Khalia’s patience reached it’s end and she exploded. She sped in front of them.

“ENOUGH!” She practically roared, making the birds in the trees scatter away. Her vampire eyes was out and her glare murderous. The duo of brothers’ knew that they were about to get it good. “Hayley is missing. As in she’s gone. The woman carrying your child.” She jabbed a finger in Klaus’ direction. “They woman you promised to protect.” She pointed to Elijah. “And the woman I don’t want to lose.” Her brother’s eyes widened at her words but she was so busy being mad at them that she didn’t even notice it. “So, you two are going to put your big boy panties on, move your differences aside and help me find her. Because so help me God, if something happens to her because you couldn’t put your differences apart, I won’t forgive you. ”

“Alright.” Elijah agreed, fixing his cufflinks.

“Niklaus?” She asked sharply. He nodded distractedly and begins to sniff at the air as he looked around.

“Have you found her scent?” Elijah asked his brother, and Khalia keeps a curious and hopeful eye on her brother with the werewolf nose.

“Klaus!” She snapped when he took to long for her liking to respond. The trio comes upon an SUV and Klaus starts searching through its contents. Khalia was fuming inside because he wouldn’t answer them.

The Hybrid groans before finally answering, much to the relief of Khaia, “No, but I found someone else's. This vehicle reeks of someone I thought I was rid of... Tyler Lockwood.” Khalia groaned before face-palming. She must have know that their troubles from Mystic Falls would follow him. And Khalia isn’t to sure that Klaus would actually kill Tyler because of a certain blonde cheerleader.

“And why would your little hybrid-sidekick from Mystic Falls have any interest in Hayley?” Elijah asked. Sometimes Khalia forgets that their eldest living brother wasn’t with them in Mystic Falls all the time. It’s funny if you really think about it, Khalia and Hayley were in the same little town at the same time, but they never met each other.

“He wants revenge because I went after his girl.” Klaus answered vaguely and the female rolled her eyes, knowing that Elijah won’t buy what he’s selling.

“Oh please, Caroline’s not even that interesting. She’s hot, but beyond that I don’t see anything worth fighting over.” Khalia snarled at her brother. His obsession with the Forbes vampire girl had gotten them into a lot of troubles.

“Says the emotionally retarded one.” He fired back at his sister, gaining a glare in return that shut him up.

Elijah luckily intervened, “Why do I suspect this is the least of your offenses?” He asked his brother.

“Because it is.” She knows what he’s done. She was in town with Kol, trying to stop the Mystic Falls gang from waking up Silas. She would have liked to get in a couple of rounds in with the reason that her brother was killed.

“Back when I had the means to sire hybrids, he was my first, Although, I didn't give him much choice in the matter.” The Hybrid pulls a blanket out of the abandoned car and sniffs at it. “He was loyal in the beginning, but he grew insubordinate, turned my other hybrids against me. I couldn't have that, so I massacred the lot of them. Tyler ran like a coward before I could finish him off.” Niklaus was still bitter about that fact.

Elijah sighs in clear frustration, “Anything else that you would like to share?” The suited Original asks his Hybrid brother.

“In one of his rage filled moods, Niklaus decided it would be a wonderful idea to drown mama Lockwood.” Khalia quipped with a smirk, Klaus has irritated her multiple times today and she was going to give it back to him in tenfold.

“You killed his mother. Wonderful.” Elijah’s tone was coated with incredulity.

“He needed to be taught a lesson!” The Hybrid said as if that was explaination enough. “And don’t give me your demon eye, Khalia, you did as much damage as I. ”

“I was busy protecting my twin brother, who ended up dead anyways!” She screamed at him, the emotions from Hayley’s disappearance clashing with her pain over her twins death.  Her chest heaved up and down from all of the feelings burning inside of her. It was all to much for her and she was dangerously close to breaking.

“And what lesson will you be taught, Niklaus, if he retaliates by harming Hayley?” Elijah asked the Hybrid and any thought of her brother’s death immediately disappeared from her brains. It was taking over by vivid images of torturing her brother’s Hybrid and ultimately killing him.

“If Tyler Lockwood hurts so much as a hair on my sweetheart’s head, Niklaus will be the very least of his problems.” She informed her brothers darkly. For a moment Klaus wondered if he should make a comment about Hayley but ultimately decided against it.

“Khalia, what did you do?” Elijah asked referring to the comment Klaus made earlier about her doing as much damage as he, if the eldest Mikaelson was going to battle with an enemy, he didn’t need anymore surprises.

“To Tyler Lockwood? Nothing.” She said, carefully answering his question that she isn’t lying to him. She is just as good with her words as her eldest brother.

“Come now, Khalia. If I had to confess to my sins, you should to.” The Hybrid taunted her. He knew it was a dangerous move, but he didn’t think it was fair that all of the heat was brought onto him.

“Khalia.” The eldest Mikaelson demanded.

She let out a heavy sigh, “After Kol’s… death, I let the vervain pass out of someone’s system before compelling said person to kill Jeremy Gilbert, so that I couldn’t get cursed.” She finally admitted, not feeling guilty or ashamed. The hunter Gilbert killed her twin brother, her best friend. He didn’t think he would get away with it, did he?

“And who might that someone you compelled be?” Elijah questioned, sensing that, that wasn’t the full story.

She sighed again, running her hand through her hair once again. “Elena Gilbert.” This was something not even Klaus knew. He only knew that she had Jeremy Gilbert killed not that she had compelled his own sister to kill him. That was a cold move, even for him. But he never understood the bond that the twins had, no one ever did. The two Mikaelson males were rightly gob smacked. They started at her, mouths slightly hung open. “He killed my best friend and she helped. I wanted them both to hurt like I did. I would have had him kill her, but I couldn’t compel him so I settled for second best.”

“Khalia…” Elijah trailed off, not knowing what to say. He wanted nothing more than to rip Matt Donovan apart when he killed Finn, and the two of them weren’t even that close, not as close as Khalia and Kol were. He only now started to understand the pain that his sister is dealing with on a daily basis.

“I'll kill Tyler Lockwood myself.” Klaus promised before vamp-speeding away to find Tyler.

“Hey, you don’t get to have all the fun.” The brunette female objected with a frown on her lovely face before following after him.

Somewhere deep in the Bayou, Hayley is alone in the shack, zip-tied to a fire stove. The werewolf was worried and scared. She knows that the Mikaelson’s are looking for her, well, Klaus and Elijah are. Khalia and Rebekah left. Khalia Mikaelson. Now, that’s a vampire she wishes would have just stayed. Or maybe she could have gone with her. But she knew that the female brunette Mikaelson doesn’t have feelings for her. Or maybe she does, but she is too scared to get close to someone after losing her best friend of a thousand years. So many maybe’s, so many unasked and unanswered questions.

When Tyler walks in and joins her, she knows she is going to have to stall Tyler and buy the Originals some time to find her. “Tyler, there's been a wolf watching me lately. Protecting me, like it instinctively knows that I'm part of it's pack.” She pauses a beat. “You're a hybrid, you can turn into a wolf whenever you want... Was it you?” She really wondered, did he or didn’t he? But if he is protecting her, he wouldn’t have kidnapped her.

Tyler is clearly confused by her last question, “No, but you're right – only hybrids can control when they change. And I'm the only one left, besides Klaus. Which is why we're here.” He informed her.

“Whatever you think you're doing, you know that whole Original family has made some sort of pact, or something, to keep me and the baby safe. So, if you hurt me, they'll kill you.” Hayley told him confidently, it was the one thing she knew she could count on.

“What makes you think I'm afraid to die?” He asked her rhetorically. An idea pops into her head, she knows it’s crazy and stupid, but it’s all she’s got. It’s her last resort. Her last hope.

“Well, Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah might kill you.” She said, nodding her head to herself. “But not Khalia.” At the mention of the one Mikaelson he fears more than he used to fear Klaus, Tyler stills. With narrowed eyes he watches the female wearily. “She’ll torture you, painfully and slowly for years and years. And she’ll kill your precious little Caroline.”

“Klaus won’t let her.” Tyler interrupts her, not actually sounding sure of himself. Khalia isn't nicknamed the Demon Mikaelson for nothing.

She chuckles lowly, but there was no humor in it. “Do you really think that Klaus can control her? I’ve seen her take him by the neck.”

“She doesn’t care about anything. She doesn’t care about you. So, what makes you so sure that she will come for you? For me?” He smirked when he saw Hayley flinch. She knew this was true, Khalia wasn’t even in town. But he didn’t know that.

She leaned forward, looking him straight in the eyes, “What makes you so sure she won’t?”

“You know she had Jeremy killed, right?” No, Hayley didn’t know. But she doesn’t care.

“He killed her twin brother.” She said with a shrug, narrowing her eyes. If Tyler thinks she was going to let him badmouth her vampire, he had another thing coming.

“Oh my God.” Tyler said, his eyes widening in realization and he took a step back in shock. It all made sense. “You’re in love with her.”

Hayley didn’t even bother denying it.

Following a vampire is not easy, following the Original Hybrid was impossible. After a half and hour, she gave up and tried to find Hayley again. She searched tents, went down to the river where she saw a few alligators and back into the forest again. Listening intently, Khalia found the double heart beats that she has used to lull herself to sleep. A huge sigh of relief left her when she realized that the heartbeats is strong and firm. Running faster than she’s ever done before, the female Mikaelson took off towards where it was coming from.

She stopped when she heard her brother’s name. Of course, she thought bitterly, he just had to play hero. “ Klaus must have known, that's the only explanation! He could care less about the baby. He just wants her to be born so he can use her to make more sired hybrids.” At this Khalia frowned heavily. If this news got out, a lot of people would be coming for the baby. She wouldn’t let that happen.

The werewolf came into the immortal girl’s line of view and she saw an clearly exhausted Hayley is sitting against a tree as she tells Elijah what she's learned. Elijah paces anxiously while he listens. Her brother looks troubled by Hayley's news and Khalia couldn’t believe it. She had this sudden urge to defend Klaus – from both Elijah and Hayley.

“I can not believe you.” Khalia spat furiously, walking up to her brother. Hayley lit up like a candle at the sight of her favorite Mikaelson. All that was going through her head was that Khalia wasn’t gone. She was here and all was perfect in the world of Hayley Marshall once again. The smile fell of her face when the female vampire turned to her with a furious expression on her face. “And you either.”

“Khalia, you know as well as I, that Niklaus cares about nothing other than power.” Elijah told her, his voice having just as much power as hers. But she wasn’t backing down. Not from this. Klaus has his faults but he loves his family. Even if he doesn’t show it all day long. Or even in years.

She shook her head determinedly, “You’re wrong. He cares about us. About our family.”

“He daggers us. How can you defend him?” Elijah asks, glaring at his sister, stepping in front of Hayley to shield her from his little sister. The gesture made Hayley frown dangerously and Khalia see red. No one would keep her sweetheart from her. Especially her brother.

“Because Niklaus hasn’t always been this way. Neither was I. We were both made who we are today because of circumstances. Me because of Kol’s death, and Nik because of our father. But he can change. How is it that you fight for him for a thousand years, but the second a opportunity presents itself, you doubt him? And how can you, even for a second, believe that he will put that little girl through what Mikeal put him through? The better question is, how is it that I am the one defending him instead of you?” Her glare was murderous and he felt two feet big.

“Actually, don't answer that because I know how, because of her.” She gives an accusatory glance in Hayley’s direction, who felt very ashamed of herself and very near to tears because of how harsh Khalia was being. She didn’t like being on the receiving end of Khalia’s anger and didn’t want to be ever again. “Whenever there is a woman involved, you can trust Elijah Mikaelson to think with his dick instead of his head.” Her words were full of anger and fire. They were also true.

“Regardless of Niklaus’ intentions, mine remain the same. I said that I would protect her, even, if need be, from Klaus himself.” He didn’t dare say that he would protect Hayley from his brunette sister, he knew he would get his neck snapped.

“Hey, I can take care of myself. I've done it for a long time.” Hayley interjects, she wasn’t a damsel in distress that needs saving. She proved that today. Well, unless it was Khalia doing the saving. Then she would be more that happy to play the roll of damsel.

“Protecting Hayley and accusing our brother of wanting a child for power, is not the same thing.” She countered angrily, crossing her arms over her chest.  No family is perfect, especially not theirs. They argue, the fight and they even stop talking to each other for decades on end, but in the end, she would always fight for her family. And Klaus is her family, she would protect him, even from Elijah.
