Chapter 29

26 | WORST CASE SCENARIO

WAR OF HEARTS • hayley marshall

Khalia Mikaelson is a short tempered person in general. But when it comes to her family and Hayley, it is even shorter than normal. After her talk with Marcel in the kitchen - one that would never be mentioned again, the brunette Mikaelson was walking to her room, wanting to get out of her blood stained clothes and take a shower. Walking with blood on herself for hours wasn't unusual for the Demon Mikaelson and she didn't mind it but the smell was starting to get to her. Then, as she walked past Hayley's room, one sentence caught her attention.

"Please, don't tell Khalia. I don't want her to worry." The pregnant girl's voice hit her vampire ears and immediately she began to worry. She can never control her feelings around the werewolf. That is why she entered the room, eyes narrowed as she looked at Hayley and who the werewolf was talking to. Elijah.

"Don't tell Khalia, what?" The female vampire asked, taking a step closer to the duo. She heard Hayley's heartbeat speed up, watched as her brother adverted his eyes all around the room expect at her. "People might not believe it, but I do have patience. Albeit it's not an amount to be proud of, but it's there and after the day I've had most of it has evaporated, suffice to say, if I don't get an answer in the next five seconds, I am not going to be held responsible for my actions. I will ask again, don't tell Khalia, what?"

Hayley sighed, caving when Khalia fixed her dark brown eyes on her. "Earlier today, Rebekah was taken. That's how that Papa-guy was so powerful, he was channeling her. Elijah and I found her in a warehouse but in order to save her, I had to let him bite me so we could use the baby's witch blood to break the spell."

Khalia's heart stopped, her world tilted on its axis for a few seconds and the only thing that was keeping her grounded, that was keeping her from lashing out at everything and everyone, was the fact that Hayley was standing infront of her without a scratch. But knowing what the werewolf did - after Khalia had asked her a thousand times to stay inside the Compound when she was not around to protect her - made her angry. Angry because, what if something happened at that warehouse and I wasn't there to protect her?

Elijah winced and Hayley braced herself for the yelling that was about to come from the female Mikaelson. But it never came. The looked at Khalia and saw her looking at them in silence and really, this was so much worse that any of her yelling.

"I have to go." Was all the Original vampire said before turning around and leaving the room to go and take a shower. In her room she got a change of clothes and entered her ensuite. Water cascaded down her body as worst case scenario's flashed across her mind and each one of them ended with a lifeless Hayley. Khalia let out a roar of frustration, hitting the shower wall with her fist. The tiles shattered under the force of her supernatural strength.

After her shower, she went to find her Hybrid brother. He told her that he wanted to give a speech but needed her by his side. Something about presenting a united front. Khalia wasn't sure why exactly he wanted her and not Elijah, but she agreed. She wasn't exactly in the mood for her brother or a certain werewolf.

She stood by his side, face stone cold and hands locked behind her back as Klaus gives a speech to the crew of vampires in the compound. "Not long ago, you all united against me. You failed. Since then, in my benevolence, I have wiped the slate clean. Yet, it seems clear you think that I am the one who needs to earn your respect, your loyalty. You're mistaken. It is you who must prove yourselves to me. Our community is under attack. I require soldiers. I need warriors, not cowards. Each of you has a decision to make. You either fight alongside me or you leave now."

"We don't owe you anything. If staying in the Quarter means living under your rule, I'd just as soon get the hell out." Thierry spat glaringly, eyes looking from the Devil Mikaelson to Demon Mikaelson. Klaus watches as a handful of vampires join Thierry and walk out of the compound. Thierry looks at Diego in hopes that he'll come along, but he gives him a pained look and stays behind.

They walked to the study, where Marcel and Sophie was waiting for them. Khalia zeroed in on the bottle of vodka, Klaus watching his sister with a smile - he always made sure that there was at least two bottle of vodka in the house for his sister. Most of his family preferred bourbon but Khalia always did her own thing.

"I got to admit, I thought you'd lose a lot more guys than that." Marcel commented and Khalia just plopped down on the couch, not really caring about the vampires they lost - she could take them all anyways.

"Well, good riddance to them, I say. We've no room for slackers or cowards in our kingdom." The Hybrid informed the two people infront of him with a nonchalant attitude.

"Do you want me to kill them for you?" Khalia offer her brother, ignoring the look of utter outrage on Marcel's face. Killing was her favourite hobby, right alongside drinking vodka.

"That won't be necessary, sister. I would rather have a smaller army than an unloyal one." He assured his sister with a smile before turning to Marcel. "Now that you've regained your composure, let's move on to the next item of business, shall we, with a little help from our dear friend Sophie."

"I got no reason to help you two," She gestured to Khalia but didn't look at her, still embarrassed about what happened earlier that night. "And I sure as hell don't have a reason to help him."

"Now, now, don't be difficult, love. You'll only live as long as you're of use to me, and right now, your best use is to explain why a witch I killed has come back for revenge. Come on. Resurrected witches with vast power?" Klaus asked the Devereaux witch.

"It's the Harvest. To die and be reborn. I don't know how, but someone jacked that power, and they used it to bring back four witches... Just not the right ones." Sophie explained and Khalia frowned. She really thought all of these witches were a bunch of fuckers. Sure, she may fight and argue with her siblings but when it comes down to it, she would lay down her life to save each one of them. Yes, even the asshole Finn.

"Why don't you just do a locator concoction and find him?" Khalia asked, taking a long pull from her vodka, looking at Sophie, who was still not looking the female vampire.

"He is stronger than me and if I tracked him, he would sense it and put up a blocking spell." Sophie answered, looking at Klaus - who wisely hid his laughter. He heard Sophie's failed attempt to ask his sister out earlier.

"So there's still a chance? If we can get that power back, we can save Davina." And of course, that was all Marcel heard.

"Let's concentrate on the immediate problem, shall we? Papa Tunde wants revenge. He'll continue to attack us, channeling power from the vampires he sacrifices. He kills, he grows more dangerous. So how do I end him? He needs sacrifices to gain power." And for the first time, Khalia's interest was really grabbed by the conversation.

"Hmm. You keep him from killing any more nightwalkers, that's a start." The witch answered him snarkily and Khalia thought that she was out to get herself killed.

"Oh geez, that's a great idea, Sophie. We'll get right onto compelling a witch we can't find." Khalia snapped glaringly before taking a long pull of her vodka.

"Unless he finds the one place with a load of vampires ready to be sacrificed." Klaus said and Sophie, Marcel and the Hybrid look at each other with a look of dawning realization while Khalia frowned.

"What the hell are you talk- oh fuck, the garden." She shot up with wide eyes, following her brother and his sireling as they sped of.  The three arrive at the garden only to discover that they are too late. All of the vampires are dead, sacrificed by Papa Tunde.

"Marcel, next time you come up with a spectacular idea like this one, you might want to put up some safety precautions." Khalia's tone was judging and her words hit like a fire poker, her eyes was glaring. She was angry with Hayley and Elijah and now she was taking it out on everyone around her.

"And what exactly would you have done, your Majesty?" Marcel sarcastically asked her, because he knew the talk they had earlier didn't make things between them right or suddenly make them friends.

"Put two guards at the door and two nightwalkers down here, patrolling around and making sure no unwanted visitors came inside." Khalia shrugged and Marcel opened his mouth before closing it again because it was actually a really good idea.

The Demon Mikaelson was more than ready to sleep away the rest of the night and if she could have her way, the whole of tomorrow. She knew that there would probably be another problem tomorrow and thus she intended to enjoy the rest of the night sleeping. At least, that was the plan. Until someone knocked on her door.

"We need to talk." Hayley said the second that Khalia opened her room door. Unlike the immortal girl, the green eyed werewolf actually knocked on door's. Even though, Khalia wouldn't mind or have a problem if she didn't.

"Just go to bed, I've had a long day and I would really like to get some rest before the next victim's of that looney witch pop up." Khalia said in a tired voice, about to close her door in Hayley's face but she never got a chance to as the werewolf pushed past her and into the vampire's room.

"No, we are going to talk now." Hayley spoke sternly, but Khalia could see the nerves in her eyes. "I don't like it when you're angry with me." This time around, her voice was much softer and more vulnerable.

Khalia raised a brow as her face remained blank, "You do realize that if it was anyone else, my siblings included, that did what you have just done, they would end up with a snapped neck?"

"I'm sorry." Hayley's cheeks flushed when she realised she invaded Khalia's privacy of her own accord. "I just, I don't want you to be angry with me and I want to know how to fix it."

"Why don't you ask Elijah, seeing as you trust him so much?" And now, with her bitter tone, she was just being a bitch. The werewolf flinched and not liking that she was the cause of it, Khalia walked to her table of booze. Before she could never touch it, a hand wrapped around her wrist. Fire ignited inside of them, lighting up their shared soul.

"First of all, I already told you that I don't think about him in a romantic way." Hayley said, gently pulling on Khalia's wrist to tug her away from the alcohol. The vampire didn't budge. "Second of all, bourbon is not going to solve your problems."

The Mikaelson girl's eyes stared into hers, the fire in the starting to weaken the werewolf's knees. "Careful, Hayley, you are starting to cross a line here."

"I wasn't aware there is a line." Hayley retorted easily, heart clenching when Khalia ripped her wrist out of her hand and walked away - leaving the liquor untouched.

"I allow you more than I do anyone else in this world, but even I have certain boundaries that I do not want crossed." Her voice was hard and Hayley has not been on the receiving end of it in a long time.

Hayley looked down and muttered to herself as she fidgeted with her fingers, "I wish there was no lines between us."

The immortal girl heard her perfectly, vampire hearing and all. Khalia surpressed a sigh, looking at Hayley and she got the strangest urge to hug the pregnant girl. It was so strong that she had to clench her fists not to do it.

"I'm tired and I want to sleep." She eventually told the werewolf again because it was true and because she had no idea what else to say to what Hayley said.

"Are you still mad at me?" The pregnant girl asked, even though she already knew the answer.

Khalia decided to respond with how she responded to most things in life. With snark. "Well, that depends. Are you going to do anymore stupid things that is going to put your life in danger?"

"Probably." Hayley admitted begrudgingly, rubbing her fidgeting hands over her baby bump and avoiding Khalia's eyes.

"Well, there you go then."

"Khalia, that's not fair." Hayley protested. They live in a city where danger is lurking around every corner. How can the vampire expect her to just sit back and do nothing while her friends and people that she cares about, is in danger.

"What's not fair, Hayley, is the fact that while I was impaled to a wall, you were out somewhere in a warehouse where you could have been attacked and kidnapped, or worse, killed. And I wouldn't have been able to help you." Khalia's chest was heaving and she was talking as if something had finally burst open. "Do you know what the very worst thing in this world is? It is to be powerless while someone you care about, is in danger. I went through it once before and I will not go through it again."

"What- what do you mean?" Hayley voice broke, fear racing in her mind. Her eyes became misty and she feels like someone was sucking all of the air out of her lungs.

Taking a deep breath, Khalia answered. "I think it would be best if we kept our distance from each other."
