Chapter 10 ~ Guilt

Last Fae

I had no idea where to go as I stepped from the building, Freya in my arms. Most of the other Mythics disappeared into the steady stream of people moving down the street as soon as they stepped out. I needed to get her to Kellan. But I had no idea where to find him. The only place I had ever seen him was at The Lone Wolf, but the sun was high in the sky and even if I hadn't been kidnapped it wouldn't be open yet.

Jasper, Darren, and Tia remained with me. They waited beside me as I gazed blankly into the street. People stared at us as they walked passed, their heavy gazes flitting between the lifeless figure in my arms and the three gaunt Mythics around me. We probably looked like something out of their nightmares. Even if Kellan wasn't there, we needed to get off the street and since Kat was my roommate, I no longer had a house to go back to. The Lone Wolf it was.

We picked our way through the streets with care. We kept to the side streets, trying to avoid the suspicion of human eyes. We didn't need anymore attention on us than we already had and getting the human police involved did't seem like a good idea. It wasn't far, a few blocks but we walked in silence.

I'm not sure why the three of them stuck with me. I hadn't done anything to deserve their help, yet having them by my side as we walked through this human world I thought I'd known so well strengthened my resolve. We could do this. We could make it back to The Lone Wolf. We could find Kellan. We could save Freya.

His familiar scent hit me a block away and I sprang into a half jog under the weight of Freya's body. I spotted him moments later running towards us, his eyes locked on the limp figure in my arms and he sped up.

"Freya?" He reached for her, pulling her from my tired arms into his own as he hugged her to him, "Is she okay?" I dropped my gaze to the pavement beneath is feet.

"She's alive," I murmured, a weight settled in the pit of my stomach and my mouth went dry. How was I supposed to tell him that I was responsible for all of this? That his sister was no longer a Wolf and it was all my fault? "We need to get her inside though." I could feel his eyes on me waiting, but I couldn't meet his gaze, not yet.

"Okay," He conceded in the end and turned back the way he'd come. We followed in silence. When we reached the pub, the door was pushed wide and the lights were on. I raced the last few steps, searching the empty building for an assailant. Had someone broken in?

"It was me," Kellan spoke from the doorway, "I let myself in earlier. I was trying to figure out how to find you. I figured this would be the best place to start." I breathed a sigh of relief and nodded my understanding. He laid Freya on the bar before turning back to me with raised eyebrows.

Somehow, he looked even worse than the last time I'd seen him. As far as I could tell he was still wearing the same outfit as well and I wasn't even sure how many days had passed since I'd been taken. He had a 5 O-clock shadow that I'd never seen on him with before and his hair was tangled from too many fingers run through it. Even as I watched he raised his hand and ran it through the mess of hair before swiping it back down his face. The whites of his eyes were red, and he could barely keep them open.

"Kellan, have you even slept since she was taken?" I gasped. He shook his head and I'm not sure if it was in answer or just to keep himself awake, "How long have you been awake? You need to sleep." How many days had it been?

"Not yet. You need to tell me what happened." I opened my mouth to answer, but his bleary eyes were aimed behind me.

"We were all taken. Held in a building a few blocks from here," Jasper rasped, pulling a stool off a table and taking a seat, "Delilah came in, maybe a couple of days ago. I didn't see Freya until," his eyes drifted to mine as he paused for what felt like a lifetime, "until they brought her out strapped to a table." He dropped his gaze to the floor for a moment before focusing back on Kellan.

"What did they do to her?" He growled his body shaking and his hands fisted at his sides.

"They used my cure on her," I whispered, hoping with my entire being that he wouldn't hear me, but knowing without a doubt that he would. I sank down to the floor, head in my hands.

"Who did this?" He growled. My best friend, I should have said, but I couldn't get the words out. Jasper replied instead in the most diplomatic way possible he explained the horrific details of what had happened and how as far as we could tell, Freya was no longer a Wolf. I didn't lift my head until the story was over. He knew it was my fault now. And for some reason that hurt most of all. Once they kicked me to the curb, I really would have nothing left. My fingers twirled around the vial in my pocket as I lifted my gaze ready to face his judgement.

A soft whimper from the bar snapped everyones attention. I jumped to my feet and rushed over followed by Jasper and Darren. Kellan was already leaning over Freya, one hand on her cheek as she blinked up at him. She pushed herself up in a rush and he caught her before she could fall from the bar.

"Freya, it's okay. You're okay," Kellan told her in a calm, controlled tone, she stared at him for a heart beat.

"They were going to try and 'cure' me, stop me from being a Wolf. Make me human," she gasped for air as she spoke, "I can't feel it anymore. I can't feel the change inside me." Moisture welled in her eyes as continued to stare at her brother like she expected him to have the answer. He swiped a hand through his hair and stared back.

"I..."He sighed like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders, "They gave you the cure. But we don't know anything about it yet. It might not actually work."

"I can feel the empty space where the change should be," The tears rolled down her cheeks, dripping one by one onto the timber floor below. Silence filled the bar after she spoke. A hollow empty silence that I had the desperate urge to fill. To say anything that would shatter it and take back everything I'd done that had caused this.

"Bite me," She jumped down from her seat on the bar, forcing Kellan to step back, "Bite me. I'll b a Wolf again. Please. You need to bite me brother. I'm begging you. I can't live like this." She rambled, her voice gaining volume with every word. She lifted her arm to his face an open invitation. Kellan stepped back again shaking his head an apology written across his face. "I can't. It could kill you." He begged.

"It won't. I was a Wolf before. I'm supposed to be a Wolf. It won't kill me. Please." "No one survives a Wolf bite."

"She did," Freya growled at him, an accusing finger pointed my way.

"And we still don't know why," He snapped back, "This only just happened, we don't know enough to make decisions like that. Once we learn more we can see if that is an option. But until then, I'm sorry Freya, but you're going to have to live with this." She recoiled from his words like she'd been hit. Backing up until her back rested against the counter, her shoulders slumped forward and her eyes closed.

"Okay," she whispered, a final tear slid down her cheek and made the long fall to the floor. Her silver aura was barely present anymore, a dim shadow of what it should have been, but it was there a sliver of hope in the darkness. I kept the fact to myself, unsure if it meant anything at all and not wanting to add more to the list of things I'd done to these people by giving them false hope. I'd keep an eye on it.

Kellan turned back to the rest of us, his eyes hesitated on Tia his eyebrows scrunching down over his eyes for a moment before drifting to me. And once again my heart raced as I waited for him to pass judgement on my actions.
