But, I am home and there will be no more distractions.

Lustrous jade orbs reflected back to me in the mirror, surveying my appearance for the night. My dark and wild, kinky curls were sculptured into a tamed mane for once, and my curvaceous lips were coated with a deep red lipstick that heavily contrasted against my eyes, but complimented my warm brown skin.
The natural cat-eye shape my eyes held had been intensified by the winged liner I now wore. I was wearing a form fitting crimson halter top that wrapped around my neck and was open at the shoulders with long, flowing sleeves.
There was a deep slit in the center of the blouse that graciously revealed my breasts and upper torso. I had paired the scarlet shirt with a pair of stark white, skin-tight distressed jeans.
They were one of my favorite pairs since they made my butt look so nice. The curves of my chest and hips and ass were all completely visible, and I smirked at my reflection in admiration. I looked hot.
"Whoa," Lorelai had entered my bedroom, adjusting a hoop earring. She took a moment to indulgence in my appearance before that familiar slow smile spread over her lips.
"Eat your heart out, baby." My tone was flirtatious as I playfully twirled around for her to get a better look. When I was facing her again, I put my hands on my hips and chuckled.
"One of the main reasons we're friends is because you're easy on the eyes." Lorelai countered dismissively and I gaped at her in mockingly offended fashion.
"You're lucky you're cute, too." I told her, shoving her lightly.
Lorelai looked gorgeous tonight. She was wearing a simple black and form-fitting long sleeved t-shirt and a dark blue jean skirt with fishnet leggings underneath.
She'd paired the outfit with a pair of calf-high black boots, a pair almost identical to the ones I was wearing, with a short heel and her favorite leather jacket.
Her steely eyes were surrounded in brown shadow, creating a warm-toned smoky eye and she was wearing red lipstick as well.
Lorelai had also braided her hair earlier in the day to create natural waves in her usually unyieldingly straight waist-length chocolate hair.
"Whatever," She scoffed at me and tossed me my own leather jacket. "Let's go, Princess." After shrugging on my jacket, I glued myself to Lorelai's heels as we raced out of the co-ed dormitory and ducked into the icy air outside.
Lorelai led the way through the forest, running with an inhumane speed and twirling and dodging around trees with supernatural skill.
We must've ran about seven or eight miles into the woods before the heady thumping of bass finally kissed my ears. Exhilaration shot through me and a sly smirk graced my lips.
The mouth of a wide clearing opened up to swallow us, the trees scattering quickly. I guessed that the area was probably a place that was used for Combats lessons because of how massive the space was.
People were haphazardly strewn everywhere, and the decadent stench of liquor assaulted my senses.
The familiar sound of Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer" pulsated through the wintry air around us, slicing the silence of the woods into ribbons. I didn't know who was in charge of the music, but I definitely approved.
"Shots!" Lorelai had turned to me excitedly, gripping my hand before she practically ran to a nearby table where bottles of tequila, gin, and whiskey sat. "Pick your poison." She had grabbed a couple of red plastic cups and gestured grandly to the awaiting liquor.
"Tequila!" A thrilling shudder skittered across my skin and I hurriedly grabbed my first shot and downed it before Lorelai had the chance to toast with me.
"I thought we weren't getting fucked up?" She called to me over the music, but the spark of elation in her silvery-gray eyes told me she was perfectly okay with getting fucked up tonight.
"Shut up and pour me another shot!" She did as told and we clanked our plastic cups together before going in for another. A guy pushed up on me suddenly while I was waiting for Lorelai to finish pouring our drinks.
"Hey!" He called to me over the music, and when I turned to look at him, I recognized him as the guy Carson from my IOS lesson that I'd sat beside the first day. "There's charmed valerian and vervain here if you want some." He was clearly intoxicated and his brown eyes were low, and even in the miniscule light, I could tell his pupils were dilated.
"Thanks, man, but no thanks." I told him easily before accepting the next shot from Lorelai. "We're all good here."
"Suit yourself, beautiful." I sneered haughtily as he turned his back to me and walked away. Lorelai and I had taken a fourth and fifth shot before I started to feel anything at all.
It took a lot of liquor to get us drunk because our bodies would burn off the alcohol before it could effect us.
She stuck a seventh shot into my hand and had me chase it with a beer before pulling me towards the dance floor. "Show me what ya got, Princess!"
Warmth had spread over my face and I felt much lighter. Lorelai led the way over to a crowd where a bunch of other Novices were dancing salaciously against one another. I recognized the song that was playingâKids of 88's "Just A Little Bit".
Lorelai twirled me around as me moved to the fast-paced, sexy beat. We grinded up next to one another, and the radiance of Lorelai's eyes slightly darkened to a gray-black as another girl joined us.
I assumed she must've been a Lycan as well since she was wearing a cute light gray mini-skirt despite the glacial weather.
She effectively distracted my best friend with her long luscious legs, and the amusement that coursed through me at the sight of Lorelai grabbing the girl and moving against her caused a smirk to crawl onto my lips.
The music changed again instantly as the Kids of 88 song came to an end, though there was no pause in between so the people dancing didn't have to stop.
I recognized this one as wellâthe KiTheory remix of Rob Zombie's "Foxy, Foxy". I actually owned the Mando Sex Head album, and it was my absolute favorite track.
It was so sexy and so fun to dance to. My eyes drifted closed as I felt the bass pulsate through me and moved in rhythm.
The tequila was making my skin feel incredibly hot, almost to the point it was itchy. My hands reached up to my hair and I twisted my hips as I danced to Rob Zombie's vocals.
Hands gripped onto me at the waist and the Siberian cold completely fell away, as the person behind me fell in rhythm to the music and my own movements.
Sultry tendrils cascaded across my skin as my shirt slightly inched up and the person's bare fingers touched my waist.
I twisted around from the shock of the sweltering warmth and opened my eyes, coming face-to-face with Derik.
There was a provocative lopsided smirk present on his lips, and his normally cerulean eyes were once again an alluring Navy blue.
He leaned into me as the music changed again, and I thought with a start Derik was going to press his mouth to mine. His lips never met mine, but instead I heard the huskiness in his voice as Derik spoke into my ear. "Told you I'd be seeing you."
Derik pulled away to look into my face and I searched his expression for a time before I shouted over the music, "Are you stalking me?"
I'll be damned, the smirk widened into an unashamed and wolfish grin. Derik's fingers splayed over my throat and before I could think of backing away or protesting, his mouth descended upon mine.
I tensed only for a second and then the sweetness of his lips instantaneously enslaving me. An indescribable hunger flooded through me and I frantically crushed myself into his body, unable to get enough of the saccharine taste this man carried. Derik's hands gripped me so tightly it was painful, but the fever that rocketed through me annihilated the sensation before I could properly register it.
Derik pulled away and I roughly gripped at the hair at the nape of his neck and tried to pull him back to my mouth, needing to taste the addictive flavor that lived on his lips.
His groan as I pulled his hair caused a violent ache to ricochet between my thighs. Derik couldn't deny me and suddenly his mouth was on mine again and I felt his fingers toy with the waistband of my jeans. His grip became volatile on the fabric and then he moved away again.
I had no control. My tongue found its way to his throat and I felt an irrefutable compulsion as my lips lingered over his skin. My fangs elongated and I pressed them into his flesh. The perverse realization of what I'd done slid through me as I tasted the luring tang of Derik's blood flow over my tongue. I tore away suddenly, stumbling back.
His eyes studied me slowly, and he moved toward me cautiously. Derik didn't seem to be concerned at all that he was bleeding. I'd fucking bitten him! I literally tore into his flesh like some kind of psychopathic rabid animal.
"Don't." His voice was a warning, and I froze, paralyzed by the ocean-blue of his eyes. The look on his face was completely calm, but the horror that skittered through me was revolting. My eyes were comically wide and I pressed my fingers to my lips, the remnants of crimson still present on my mouth.
The scent of it was so grating, and I couldn't help how turned on I wasâand how much I wanted more. "Sonya." Derik closed the space I'd put between us and gently slid his fingers over the skin right underneath my eye.
Suddenly realizing they held a hellish warmth I leaned into Derik's touch and let them flutter closed. When I opened them again, the heat had disappeared. The only fervor left was what cascaded across my skin from Derik's touch.
"Sonya!" Lorelai fell into me and Derik let his hand fall as he took in my drunk friend beside me. I twisted to look at her as she sagged all of her weight onto me. "Hey..." She narrowed her eyes suspiciously but the pupils were so dilated, I doubted she could see clearly at all.
"Are you bleeding?" Lorelai seemed only slightly concerned and I hurriedly licked the remainder of Derik's blood from my mouth as I shook my head.
"Did you take something, Lori?" I shot back, slowly sobering up as the tequila ran its course through my system and the lustful haze from earlier melting away.
"Do you need help taking her back to your dorm?" Derik's voice caused me to look over at him again, and I hesitated. "Sonya," He'd scrunched his brows together in concern and I nodded.
Derik easily swept Lorelai into his arms and I held back to urge to tell him I could carry her. The possessiveness that swept through me at the sight of another woman that close to him was strange.
It was Lorelai. Not only was she my best friend, and drunk, she was gay. She could never be interested in Derik in the way I was interested in him.
"Thank you," I started once we'd finally moved far enough away from the party and music to be able to speak at a normal volume and still be heard. "I know you don't know us at all, but thanks for your help."
Derik had taken us to his car, and I was pleased to find it was a '79 dark blue Camaro.
"Are you thick or trying to be funny?" Taken aback by his words, my mouth fell slack as I watched as he leaned into his car to lay my friend across the backseat.
She grumbled about being cramped and Derik rudely closed the door on her as she continued to complain. "I already told you that you're my Sufletul Oglinda."
I just stared at him, unsure of what to say. Derik watched me silently, expectantly. "What does that even mean?" I finally blurted.
His handsome face contorted into confusion. "What?" The single word came out incredulously and I took a step back as his eyes blazed with annoyance.
"Don't back away from me." Derik didn't soften his gaze but reached out and grabbed me by the waist and pulled me into him again.
"You're my soulmate." He breathed onto my skin, and I shuddered at the fire that enveloped me. I was slowly growing accustomed to the sensation of it.
"So, do we just run off and get married now?" My voice was completely flat and Derik looked at me like I was stupid. I felt stupid. I know that Derik was supposed to be my soul mate, but I didn't know much about Mating and how it worked.
Were the two Mates just suddenly in a relationship, no questions asked? Did they immediately have sex and children and ride off into the sunset? Marriage and kids were the farthest thing from my mind. I still wasn't ready for any of that.
Rene was still out there. Rene still had to suffer for what he had taken from me.
"Tell you what," Derik started as the look on his face finally shifted into something more resembling adoration. "If I deliver Rene Olicidove's head to you on a platter, would you consider marriage then?"
I was shocked, and then I wasn't. Of course Derik must've known about my past. If I was truly his soulmate, he had to have done some digging on me.
The information about my mother's death probably wasn't hard to discover considering I was the Final Child of the Royal bloodline.
"I don't want you to touch him." My voice held a vehement firmness. "He is mine to kill." The cerulean blue of Derik's eyes slightly darkened and he squeezed at my hips.
"Whatever you say, Princess."
â¼
A sliver of orange-yellow sunlight slit across the floor of my dormitory bedroom the next evening when I woke up. Lorelai was dead to the world in bed beside me, and my mind immediately floated back to Derik.
The alcohol had completely cleared from my system and it finally registered just how incredibly strange the night before had been.
First, Derik doesn't deny stalking me, and then I chomp into him like he was some sort of snackâhe was delicious, but that was completely beside the pointâand then he offers to murder the Lycan that killed Meredith in exchange for marriage.
Not to mention that Lorelai got so high we needed to leave within the time frame of only an hour. It was such a short, but peculiarly eventful night.
Despite the weirdness, I felt a desperate luring in my chest that pushed me to see Derik again. He had simply told me he'd "be seeing me" again, and I became incredibly aware that he probably would be seeing me, and I wouldn't be seeing him.
My soulmate is kinda creepy.
Then I wondered if maybe he wasn't stalking me. The beginning of the year party was huge and took place in almost the same area every year. Maybe my questioning if he was stalking me had just been funny to him and that's why he had mischievously smiled the way he had.
Sighing, I rose from the bed, letting thoughts of Derik slip away as I made my way to the kitchenette. He knew where I lived now though since he had aided me in taking Lorelai back to my dorm room.
Pulling eggs from the fridge, I cracked five into a bowl and retrieved a skillet to fry some bacon.
The smell of it must've woken Lorelai because she padded out of my bedroom, yawning and rubbing one of her eyes.
She still looked so beautiful, even though her hair was a mess atop her head, there was a line of dried drool on her chin, and dark half-circles were prominent under her swimming gray orbs.
The validity within her steely eyes still seemed sluggish, and I frowned, wondering what it was that she had taken at the party the night before.
"Hey," Lorelai croaked, sleep still heavy in her voice as she greeted me. She moved slowly towards the kitchenette and leaned against the counter beside the stove.
Her radiant gray eyes levelled onto me as seriously as she could manage behind the haziness. "Who was that guy you fuckin' bit last night?"
I rose a brow as I turned my eyes in her direction. "Derik." The tone around his name as I spoke it was flat, even though the emotions that stirred in my chest were quite the opposite.
"Derik Seilyar?" Lorelai's drugged fogginess somewhat cleared at his name. "Why the fuck did you bite him? He's a Vampyre, not a human."
"How do you know that?" I narrowed my eyes at her suspiciously and Lorelai narrowed hers back at me before recognition slapped her across the face and she promptly became sober.
"You Marked him, didn't you?" My head tilted to the side in confusion at her accusation. "Don't play dumb with me, Sonny."
"I'm not, seriously." Technically, it was only partially a lie.
I somewhat knew what a Mark was, but I didn't realize that was what I was doing last night when I bit Derik. I thought I just was so overwhelmed with desire that it made me want to... eat him?
"Are you trying to tell me you thought you had a very intense occurence of cute aggression? You are not that stupid, are you, Sonya?"
"I don't know!" I shouted at my friend suddenly, unable to quelch the frustration that had blossomed within me.
"I don't know anything about Mates or Marks. I didn't know that I could have a Mate until a few days ago and then he just so happens to waltz right the fuck into my life hours later. Like I'm trying to process and I don't need you to stand here and tell me I'm an idiot.
"I know that. I know nothing about the Unknown World or how my own body works and it fucking sucks. So you can either sit here and eat bacon with me and explain this shit to me, or leave me alone."
Lorelai was scowling at me as she listened to me yell, and after a while of looking at me icily, she sucked her teeth and snagged a piece of bacon. Rolling her eyes, she nodded easily as she chewed thoughtfully.
"Okay. Well, from what I know, you should be able to feel the Mate pull. Some people have said it feels like sparksâliteral electricity moving across your skin. Others say it makes you feel incredibly hot all over, so hot it's basically unbearable." I nodded slowly as I listened to her words.
Pushing half of the scrambled eggs I had made onto a plate, I pushed it towards her and gestured to the bacon before discarding the rest onto a plate of my own.
"It is like fire to me." I spoke finally through a sigh. "I don't know if it feels the same for Derik, but it's an indescribable heat." Lorelai took a bite of her eggs and then set her plate down to face me.
"I'm not really sure why everyone feels the Mate pull differently in that way, but I do know that you must've Marked Derik last night because your true nature pushed you to do it. Marking your Mate within the first week you meet is pretty typical. And since Derik Seilyar has already completed the Change, that means the urge for him to Mark you is almost undeniable. Which means..." Lorelai paused and seemed hesitant to continue. I looked at her expectantly and she bit her lip nervously and looked away.
"Which means..." I drawled, echoing her words as I trailed off and waited for her to continue. Her next words sliced through me with a viciousness that had anxiety spilling over my skin after they tumbled out of her mouth.
"That must mean that the Awakening will be happening soon, Sonya."
