CHAPTER 37
Falling Hard
Ari stumbled out of the tent like a zombie, rubbing her eyes as she groggily walked toward Jenni. She didn't say a wordâjust dropped beside her and wrapped her arms around Jenni's waist, burying her face into her side like a cat seeking warmth.
Jenni chuckled, patting Ari's head. "Rough night?"
Ari only groaned in response, curling up more.
I smirked, watching the way she clung to my sister like her life depended on it. For someone who talked a big game, she sure had a soft side.
Lily, on the other hand, had different plans.
"Ariii!" she called out, running toward her.
Ari stiffened immediately.
I could practically feel the rage radiating off her as she squeezed her eyes shut, clearly hoping if she ignored Lily long enough, the kid would disappear.
Didn't work.
Lily tugged at her arm. "Come play with me!"
Ari's fingers twitched. I swear, if she wasn't holding onto Jenni, she might've actually kicked Lily across the campsite.
Still, she forced a smile, though I could see the cracks in her patience. "Lily, I didn't sleep last night."
Lily pouted. "Just for five minutes?"
Ari inhaled deeplyâlike she was praying for patienceâbefore turning to Jenni. "Save me."
Jenni laughed. "Lily, let Ari rest a little."
Lily huffed but finally let go, skipping away.
Ari slumped against Jenni again, muttering under her breath, "I'm going to lose my mind."
I shook my head, amused as hell.
Then, Mom's voice cut through the moment.
"So, Ari, what are your plans for prom?"
Ari stiffened slightly before blinking up at Mom. "Uh... prom?"
Mom nodded, sipping her coffee. "It's coming up soon, isn't it? Have you thought about your dress? Your date?"
Ari sat up straighter, rubbing her temple like the thought alone was giving her a headache. "I haven't thought about it, honestly."
Michelle sighed, looking at her daughter. "Ari, you should go. It's a once-in-a-lifetime event."
Ari shrugged. "I guess."
Mom gave her a knowing look. "No date yet?"
I didn't know why, but I felt myself listening a little too closely to her answer.
Ari just scoffed. "Nope."
Jenni smirked. "Bet you'll get a bunch of offers, though."
Ari rolled her eyes. "Not interested."
I leaned back against the car, crossing my arms. "Didn't take you for the type to skip out on parties."
She glanced at me, unimpressed. "Not in the mood to deal with the whole prom drama."
Mom raised an eyebrow. "Well, if you change your mind, you should find a nice boy to take you."
I clenched my jaw for some reason.
Ari let out a dry laugh. "Yeah, I'll get right on that."
I didn't know why, but I suddenly felt annoyed.
