Chapter 11: "Courtship"
Just Don't Ask {Damijon!}
The sun had only begun to set as Damian watched atop one of the buildings adjacent to the Kent residence. Bent down on one knee and shielded by a plate of lead he watched through a visor, waiting for Superdad and Jon's mom to make their leave.
Damian watched as Clark and Lois made their way down the steps, giving their son a hug and waving goodbye.
"Right on cue." Damian smirked, waiting a moment for them to leave to go on their date, he began grappling down the side of the building.
Damian made his way to the front door, garbed in the finest suit money can buy and armed with his choice weapons, a bouquet of flowers, roses of red, white and lilies, an overly sweet chocolate cake- catered to Jon's liking, his painting and his secret weapon, cologne.
Damian Wayne was trained by the league of assassins since birth to not only be prepared for any battle but also to win; and this was a battle Damian wasn't willing to lose, the only difference now is that he's got flowers and cake sweet enough to rival the lethality of any of his weapons rather than a blade and birdarangs.
Damian stood outside the door, stilling his breath he knocked.
*knock knock knock*
Not a moment later, Jon opened the door dressed in blue shorts, white socks and shirt that looked just a little bit too big for him.
"Who is i- Dami?" Jon asked, a confused look on his face at the sight before him.
"Hello, Jon." Damian paused, a slight tinge of pink hitting his cheeks as he saw Jon, cool emeralds meeting hopeful sapphires, flashing Jon what one could only hope was a smile. "I have come bringing gifts."
"Gifts? But.. it's not my birthday" Jon said
"No Jon, I come to you now in hopes to have your hand, that you would accompany me in the ritual of-" Jon cut him off, bursting out in laughter.
"Dami- if- if this is your idea of asking me out-" Jon paused, attempting to stifle his laughter "then the answer is y-yes."
"Wait- what?" Damian asked, wide eyed.
"I said yes, Dami! I'll go out with you." Jon answered, a few giggles escaping his lips. "Just stop talking like that!" Jon giggled out.
"Like.. out-out? Like a date-date?" Damian asked, his mouth agape.
"Yes, isn't that what you were trying to do? Like.. ask me out?" Jon cooed.
"I mean- I- well.. yes but I.. had a whole plan figured out." Damian said, a slight tinge of pink on his cheeks. "The perfect date for the perfect boy." Damian reiterated.
"Pfffff. Dami, don't overthink things all the time, now come inside a bit." Jon said
"Wait, Jon I- euwoah!" Damian was interrupted by Jon pulling him inside, nearly losing his grip on his gifts as the door closed behind him.
Damian sat at the couch of the living room, resting his chin in the palm of his hands.
"All that planning.. gone to waste. Just like that. First he would have smelt the flowers, acknowledging how perfect my choices were. Then he'd invite me in and ask what's in the box, then I'd say its chocolate cake. Then he'd hug me tight.. so so tight.. then we'd share a piece then we were going to go to his favourite ice cream parlor, then we would have gone to the arcade, then we would have gone to the movies and seen that film he keeps nagging me on about then we would have had dinner in the fanciest place in metropolis then I'd bring him home, and on the steps of the front door he'd look back, smile and kiss me, thanking me for the perfect night and then I'd ask him to be-" Damian cut off his train of thought as an audible ding ringed throughout the residence.
"Popcorn's ready!" Jon called out from the kitchen, Damian only grumbled in response.
"But now.. I'm here. My meticulously planning for the perfect date.. ruined. Doomed to watch a cheesy movie like the Codfather or Thaitanic or oh god maybe even G.I Bro" Damian thought to himself, letting out a sigh as Jon emerged from the kitchen, a bowl of popcorn in hand and two grape sodas in the other.
"I got snacks!" Jon said, a wide smile on his face as he placed them on the coffee table in front of them, beside the chocolate cake, plopping down beside Damian.
"Awww, what's wrong sourpuss?" Jon said, poking Damian's cheek.
"TT." Damian said, swatting away Jon's hand. "Knock it off, Hayseed." Damian said, looking away.
"Dami..? What's wrong?" Jon asked, concern in his voice.
Damian can normally steel wall any form of interrogation but under Jon? He couldn't even begin to hope for it.
"TT. This.. isn't exactly what I had in mind when I thought of asking you out." Damian admitted
"What do you mean?" Jon asked, cocking his head slightly to the right.
"Well.. I just.. we were supposed to go out, and I had everything planned out." Damian said
"Dami, we go out all the time! Like literally all the time, I just.. kinda wanted to have some bonding time with you, like bonding time not after a patrol, you know?" Jon paused "and hey, a date's a date, right? What matters is that it's me and you spending time together."
Damian let out a sigh "that's another thing, kent. I didn't expect you to be so.. compliant seeing as well- you don't like boys and all." Damian said rather bitterly.
"Who said I don't like boys?" Jon smirked playfully, it was supposed to look flirty but came out more of impossibly adorable.
"Wait-" Damian's eyes went wide, turning to look at Jon, his blush returning "What?!"
Jon only giggled in response, flashing his older but shorter friend a wink, only serving to further darken his blush. Jon switched on the tv, flicking through some movies.
"Wanna watch Lord of the bings? Or maybe we could watch raiders of the lost bark or maybe star shrek oooh! Or maybe life of pie or maybe even-"
"Just pick something, Jon." Damian chided.
"Fiiiine. We're watching Fit." Jon said, clicking on the movie.
"Fit?" Damian asked.
"Yeah, it's about a body builder clown who takes away kids from the sewer, you know, the one where he take georgie's boat thing." Jon said.
"Kent, you hate horror movies" Damian said bluntly
"Do not."
"Do to."
"Do not"
"Do to"
"Do not"
"Look, fine. Let's just watch the movie. But if you can't sleep tonight, don't blame me."
The movie started just as the sun went down, leaving the boys in the darkness of the room, the tv screen serving as the only source of light.
Damian honestly couldn't care less for the movie, he had only one thing in mind, or more of one boy; Jon.
He eyed Jon in the corner of his eyes, the way his messy hair falls so perfectly on his face, the way he looks so fixated on the extremely cheesy movie.
Jon extended a hand, looking for the popcorn bowl, not bothering to avert his gaze from the movie, missing the bowl by a mile.
Damian rolled his eyes and pushed the bowl slightly closer.
"Mmnch. Thanks mmnch" Jon said
"Mhm." Damian said, disinterested in the film.
"You know, you can hug and stuff.. right?" Jon said
"Yes, Kent. I am fully aware" Damian answered
"Why don't you?" Jon asked
"Well- I.. I kinda.. want you to intia-aii!" Jon screamed as Fit grabbed Georgie and pulled him into the sewer, jon instinctively grabbed Damian and buried his face in the older boy's shoulder, almost knocking over the bowl."
"K-kent-" Damian stuttered feeling the warmth of the Jon's body on his, and knowing full well Jon instinctively sought him out for safety.
"Mmmmn..!!" Jon hummed as the music of the scene climaxed, before going still.
"Is it- is it gone..?" Jon asked, peeking out at Damian.
"Jon, you can literally melt a man's face off and you're afraid of that? A clown?" Damian asked, raising a brow at the boy.
"A body builder clown demon-thing!" jon corrected but just ended up sounding confused.
"Right.. well-"
"Dami, can you get us a blanket..?" Jon asked
"TT. What? Why?" Damian asked
"I'm cold.." Jon answered, flashing Damian his patented superboy puppy eyes.
Damian groaned but relented. He just couldn't resist that look and by now, Jon probably knew it.
Not a minute later Damian returned with the blankets in-hand.
"Why'd you take so long?!" Jon complained, hugging his knees.
Damian rolled his eyes and carefully draped the blanket over Jon's shoulders, sitting down beside him, arms crossed.
Jon draped the blanket around his friend, sharing it with him before leaning on his shoulder.
"J-jon.. what are you- doing..?" Damian said, blushing deeply.
"Sharing the blanket with you.. don't want you catching a cold so.." Jon's voice trailed off as he focused back on the movie.
Damian opened his mouth to speak but chose to stay quiet and simply try to enjoy the film.
Jon, wrapped an arm around Damian's arm resting his cheek on it.
Damian had already taken off his suit and changed into some pajamas he left from an earlier visit. The movie neared its end as Damian decided to ask the question that had been on his mind all night.
"Hey Jon..?" Damian began
"Mhm?" Jon replied
"What.. what are we?" Damian asked.
"What do you mean?" Jon asked
"I mean like.. what are we.. really? Friends? Best friends? Or.." Damian's voice trailed off
Jon averted his gaze for once, meeting Damian's eyes before the older boy looked away almost immediately, his blush darkening.
"Honestly Damian? I mean.. we do like.. literally everything together. We hang out all the time, we do.. stuff most just friends people don't do.." Jon paused as Damian tensed up "so I mean.. we already are kinda dating?" Jon answered shyly.
Damian was at a loss for words, with all his planning.. he never expected this.
"Y-you mean.. you.. you like-" Damian was interrupted by Jon who tightened his hug around his waist.
"Do I like you..? Yes Dami" Jon said in the sweetest voice one can imagine "Yes, I like you too." He said, kissing his friend on the cheek.
Damian's mind basically went static, he felt like his heart was ready to burst out of his chest and dance the salsa.
"You- you.. Jon... you mean.. it.. and like.. you're not saying it just cause.. that's what I wanna hear..?" Damian asked, almost skeptical of Jon's sincerity.
"Yes Dami, I'm sure. I've had.. the past few months to figure that out" Jon admitted letting out a small laugh. "The way you tense up around me, the way you look at me, how only I can get you to stutter like this and panic how you're always so sweet without even realizing it, how you.. how you're you? Oh Dami.. you're a lot more lovable than you realize.." Jon said, blushing.
"But I- I.. I don't.. Jon-" damian didn't know what to say, so Jon said it for him.
"I also know by now that you'd never end up asking, so I'll do it." Jon smiled, and made Damian face him like that night so many months prior, now disregarding the film.
"You ready?" Jon asked sweetly.
"I- I.. Jon- I" Damian stuttered.
"Damian, my true best friend.. will you be.. my boyfriend?" Jon asked, lightly touching Damian's cheek.
Once more, Damian's eyes showed what is true, once more he cried, but now... he cried for a different reason. He cried because he just heard something he didn't think he'd here in a million life times and with that.. he felt his heart nearly explode.. he was at a loss for words.
"Mnn. M- mhm.. y-yeah.." Damian stuttered, eyeing Jon's face, watching his lips turn into a wide smile.
"See what I mean? You're lovable!" Jon said, planting a kiss on Damian's lips. A few giggles escaping his lips.
"K-kent.. oh.. jon.. jon... J-jon.." Damian said.. tearing up as he wrapped his arms around Jon, keeping him in a tight embrace which Jon lovingly returned.
"Jon.. jon jon jon jon...." Damian mumbled as he cried.
"Dami dami dami dami" Jon teased. "I guess that makes it official! You're my boyfriend now." He said kissing his new boyfriend on the cheek.
That made Damian's breath hitch in his throat, tightening his hug further.
"Mmn.. Kent.. I love you.."
"I love you too Dami.."
