âOh shïtâ
It was nine pm on the next night when Ifrah turned on her side to lie straight on the bed. She glared at the ceiling with her hands tied on her stomach and whispered;
âAayan... â she called out while internally pulling out her hair for stooping this low. She was bored beyond words and wanted to do something but according to the stupid rules, the passengers were to go to bed at eight-thirty and if the staff caught their lights on, they'd have to pay fine.
âHey,â she tried again. She couldn't even see him in the pitch black room to tell if he was deliberately ignoring her or not. âI know you're awake.â
No answer.
She huffed out a breath and moved her hand to feel the pillows which were placed between them and let out a shriek when she felt a nose.
âYou idiot!â she whisper yelled in the dark and was replied with a groan.
âKya maut pari hai tumhe?â (What's wrong with you?) Aayan's groggy voice reached her ears and heat crawled up her face when she realized that it sounded too close to her liking.
âMove away from here.â she said through gritted teeth and shoved his face, making him roll over the bed with a yelp.
âAre you insane?!â Aayan growled.
âShut up, stupid! Do you want to pay that huge amount of fine?â Ifrah whispered harshly.
Her husband let out a scoff. âAs if they are standing outside our door with their ears pressed to it.â
âThey could be.â
He laughed with disbelief. âAre you for real? What kind of psychos do that? People can be doing God knows what in their rooms.â
Ifrah's face turned beet red at the implimentation and she leaned over to swat his arm in the dark, making him hiss in pain. âTum baaz a jao in harkaton se, jahil insaan.â (You better desisit from this behaviour.)
âWhat are you even saying, woman? I didn't do anything!â
âJust shut up.â
âNo. You shut up. You woke me up for whatever stupid reason you had and now you're harassing me.â
Ifrah gasped. âWhat? I'm not harassing you!â
âYeah,â Aayan drawled. âChapairain tou mera chacha maar raha hai na mujhy.â (As if my uncle is slapping me.) he said sarcastically, making his wife roll her eyes. But he couldn't see that.
âYou know what, my mistake. Just return to sleep.â she grumbled and turned back on her left side before closing her eyes.
âEasy for you to say, witch.â Aayan fired back at her, making her tightly clench her fists.
âGo. To. Sleep.â she ground out and her husband just kicked her leg in response. She kicked him back and it went on like this for a few minutes before they both gave up and shut their eyes.
They both kicked each other to Mars in their dreams, though.
ââââââââ
âFinally!â
Ifrah clapped her hands in delight as the boat came to a halt on the shore of the Cocos island. She snapped some pictures with her Canon and grinned, before turning to look at her left. Her grin immediately faded away when she caught Aayan glaring at her.
âWhat?â she snapped.
âPick up your bags, pagal insaan. Everyone is getting off.â
He didn't wait for her and left. Ifrah straightened her blue checkered boyfriend shirt before grabbing her backpack and following after him with a steely look. She was trying to set her backpack down when a strong hand grabbed it and helped her. The chestnut haired girl looked up to find the guide giving her a grin.
She felt uneasy all of a sudden.
âUm... thanks.â she muttered while trying to walk away, but the man stopped her.
âMy pleasure. It's my duty to help beautiful ladies like you.â he said with a thick Spanish accent and Ifrah internally cringed. She tucked some hair behind her ear to flash her wedding band but the guide was focused on her face.
He was going to say something else when someone else joined them and they looked up to see a widely grinning Aayan.
âHere you are, babe. I was waiting for you.â
Was that relief she felt? Yes.
But that 'babe' made her left eye twitch. The guide's face fell immediately and his eyebrows creased together as Aayan nearly snatched the strap of her bag from his hold and grabbed Ifrah's hand.
âThank you for helping my wife.â he said with a tight lipped smile and the tour guide gave an awkward nod in return. Aayan walked away from there with Ifrah and turned his head around to casually throw off his shoulder;
âKutta.â
A horrified gasp escaped from Ifrah's lips but the guide only gave him a frown. Aayan smirked and dragged his wife to some distance where the guide couldn't see them and practically threw her hand away.
âAstagfirullah, my hand is contaminated now.â he mumbled with a glare and took out his sanitizer before squirting some on his hands and rubbing them together.
Ifrah gaped at him before letting out a scoff. âAs if mine are not! And I didn't ask for your help back there!â
âYou just admitted that you needed help.â he replied with his smart mouth and adjusted his ray bans before smiling mockingly at her. âA thank you would suffice.â
âIn your dreams!â she spat at him and picked up her backpack before leaving him there to join the tourists group. Aayan threw daggers at her retreating back but followed none the less.
Ten minutes later, they were all trekking along the designated path for tourists. The guide was telling them some fun facts about the island and Ifrah was recording the whole thing as a Vlog with a big smile on her face. At the end of the line was the raven haired man, who was practically dragging himself like a dead meat with a grumpy look on his face.
He didn't want to be here.
Aayan stopped abruptly, as if he had enough, and the other tourists disappeared around the corner. He inhaled a deep breath and kicked a stone before facing the thick forest with his hands on his waist.
The tour guide had said that it was not allowed to go deeper into the woods because this island was still pretty much undiscovered. Aayan scoffed.
What a boring trip.
He casually walked around the trees and saw that a red line was tied around the trunks to label the boundary. He was trying to squint into the woods when a familiar annoying voice startled him.
âWhat are you doing?â
He jumped around to see his wife standing there with her hands on hips and the camera dangling around her neck. Aayan narrowed his eyes.
âNone of your business.â
âIt is. Because unfortunately, I came with you. So, I have to check if you're lost or not.â Ifrah stated like she was talking to a kid and not a twenty-five year old man.
He rolled his eyes in response. âJust carry on with your stupid tour.â
He faced the red line again and stepped closer to it.
âDon't even try to cross that.â His wife warned. Aayan slowly turned his head in her direction before widening his eyes. He maintained the eye contact with her while putting his right foot on the other side of the line, and watched her face get red with anger.
When he was fully on the other side, he passed her a rakish wink which made her heart flutter involuntarily, before spinning on his heels and continuing his way into the forest. He had walked barely ten steps when a cold hand enclosed around his upper arm to stop him in his tracks.
âStop.â He swiveled around to face Ifrah who had a tight grip around his arm and was glaring at him. âWe're not allowed to go in there.â
âYou're talking as if I give a fück.â
Ifrah flinched at the curse but tightened her hold. âAayanâ â
Her words died in her throat when he pushed his face so close to hers that there was only a millimeter of distance left between them. Aayan smirked as he caught her hitched breath, and stepped back.
He had distracted her to escape out of her grasp.
Ifrah's hands rolled into fists at her sides when he went back to go in the woods and she stood there for a moment or two with her face burning with embarrassment. But she soon snapped out of it and followed him. She was constantly calling his name with insults to make him stop but Aayan was only whistling and looking around like he was all alone there. Finally after some very long minutes, he stopped and turned around to face a very angry Ifrah who looked ready to murder him right there, and raised his hands in front of him as a peace gesture.
âSee? It didn't hurt anybody. We can go back now.â
He moved to go back but halted in his spot, and looked around.
Which way did they come from?
All of his surroundings looked alike and Aayan clicked his tongue while scratching the back of his head. His eyes gazed everywhere in hopes to find the path they had come from but no luck, and it finally settled on his furious wife who was looking at him with her arms crossed.
âWell?â she asked with a mocked smile and he cringed. They heard a rumble all of a sudden and looked up to see the sky getting covered with grey clouds. Their eyes widened when they realized that it was one of those common tropical forest storms which appears out of nowhere and Aayan muttered under his breath;
âOh shït.â
