Chapter 77

Sweet Submission: Reclaiming Her Love

Chapter 77 Let Us Cancel The Engagement Elliot was unsure how much time had passed as he stood there, the image of Corynn leaving with Jason etched in his mind.

He was so absorbed in his thoughts that he didn’t notice Amanda approaching.

“Elliot,” Amanda called out. However, he didn’t respond.

Amanda had come as soon as she got Corynn’s message, which was sharp and slightly contemptuous.

Initially, Amanda was outraged, but her anger subsided when she realized Corynn was with Jason.

To Amanda, it didn’t matter who Corynn was with, as long as she stayed away from her fiance.

But after seeing Elliot look so desolate, Amanda felt a tightness in her chest.

“Elliot, we should head back,” she suggested, her discomfort evident.

She struggled to comprehend what Elliot found so captivating about Corynn. Corynn was with someone else; why couldn’t Elliot let her go? Did Corynn need to vanish completely for Elliot to notice Amanda?

Elliot gave a small nod and started to turn away, but just then, he caught sight of Corynn leaning on Jason’s arm, their group cheerfully piling into a car.

The scene starkly contrasted Elliot’s loneliness.

Amanda reached out and gently took his arm, her gaze briefly meeting Corynn’s.

Consequently, Corynn directed her gaze elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Elliot watched Corynn and her group drive away. When he finally decided to move, he found that his legs had grown numb.

He shrugged off Amanda’s hand. “Please go ahead. I need some time to myself,” he said.

Amanda resisted, wrapping him in a tight embrace. “I understand you’re in pain, but think about how hard this is for me too,” she sobbed.

Elliot struggled to free himself as Amanda’s voice rose sharply. “Corynn is with someone else now! Can’t you turn around and see that I am right here? I’m your fiancee! Have you ever stopped to consider my feelings? I am hurting too!”

Tears streamed down Amanda’s cheeks. She remembered vividly the day Elliot had coldly dismissed her, leaving her alone and vulnerable to danger. Instead of showing concern, Elliot had traveled abroad by himself, and she couldn’t even reach him on his phone.

Through her own efforts, she had found out that he had gone overseas specifically to purchase scar ointment for Corynn.

Did her feelings mean nothing at all?

After a long, heavy silence, Elliot spoke with a resignation that chilled the air. “Amanda, we should end our engagement.”

He recognized that he had been neglecting Amanda, his thoughts consumed by Corynn.

Their engagement had been arranged by their families, but he could not allow Amanda to remain trapped in a loveless union while he pursued another.

More than that, Corynn had been correct. Continuing the engagement would unfairly paint her as a destroyer of homes.

He refused to let Corynn carry such a stigma.

Amanda froze, her grip loosening as she stared at Elliot. In a hushed voice, she asked, “What are you saying?”

In that moment, she wished she could not hear, and that the words he uttered could be unsaid.

“Amanda, let’s cancel our engagement. I cannot in good conscience drag you along in a relationship that lacks love,” Elliot said, his voice devoid of warmth.

Silence hung between them. Suddenly, Amanda laughed. Her laughter was bitter and harsh. “So you suddenly realize it after three whole years?”

They could have been married for three years, during which she had dropped countless hints and even made her intentions clear, yet Elliot remained distant.

Why did he even agree to this engagement if he never loved her?

“Is this because of Corynn again?” Amanda wiped the tears away from her tear–streaked cheeks. Through gritted teeth, she declared, “I do not agree to cancel our engagement. I will not let it happen!”

She was determined not to let him go, even though she knew she might never have his love.
