Chapter 44

Shattered Trust

SIGNED TO BE HIS

The streets of Paris were alive with energy as Grace and Jax ventured out into the city after their quiet morning. The warmth of the sun made everything feel just a little more magical. They walked hand in hand, exchanging light banter, the air between them filled with unspoken comfort. But neither of them knew that the calm of the morning was just a brief pause before everything would take an unexpected turn.

They decided to spend the afternoon sightseeing, visiting iconic spots and exploring hidden corners of the city that felt like they belonged only to them. As they reached the lively Champs-Élysées, a message buzzed on Jax's phone. He glanced at it quickly, frowning. Grace noticed but didn't say anything, assuming it was something work-related.

After a while, they stopped at a charming café for a drink. The soft hum of conversation filled the air, and the world seemed to slow down around them. Grace felt content in the moment, but she couldn't ignore the tension building up in Jax's silence.

"Is everything okay?" she asked, leaning forward, her eyes searching his face.

Jax sighed and set his phone down. "Yeah, it's just... work stuff. You know how it is."

Grace didn't push him, though she could tell something was off. Before she could say anything else, a figure appeared at their table—none other than Kate, Jax's band manager, with a stern look on her face. Grace's eyes widened in surprise.

"Jax," Kate said, her voice sharp. "We need to talk."

Jax immediately stood up, a mix of frustration and confusion crossing his features. "Not now, Kate. We're on a break. Whatever it is, it can wait."

Kate wasn't having it. "It's about the tour. And you, Grace." She turned to Grace, her expression tight. "We need to have a serious discussion about your role. This whole... relationship thing is getting out of hand. It's affecting Jax's focus, and it's becoming a problem."

Grace's heart raced at the sudden confrontation. She hadn't expected this at all. She glanced at Jax, trying to read his expression, but he looked as conflicted as she felt.

"Excuse me?" Grace said, standing up from the table, trying to keep her voice steady. "What exactly are you implying, Kate?"

Jax stepped in, his voice tight. "Kate, stop it. Grace isn't a distraction. I don't know what you think is going on, but she's not the problem here. The pressure, the media, everything—it's too much. And I'm not letting you put this on her."

Kate shot him a look, her eyes narrowing. "You're blind, Jax. This isn't just about you. The media is already spinning rumors. The press is all over us, and this relationship? It's turning into a circus. You need to make a choice—focus on the band or focus on whatever this is."

The words hit Grace like a slap, and she stepped back, stunned by Kate's harshness. Jax seemed equally shaken, and there was a moment of silence before he spoke again, his voice cold.

"I don't have to choose, Kate. This is my life. If you can't accept that, then maybe you should rethink your role in all of this." He turned to Grace, his eyes softening. "I'm sorry. I didn't know this was coming."

Grace shook her head, her emotions swirling. "I didn't know either, Jax. But this is too much. I didn't sign up for being a part of your drama."

Kate shot them both one last, disapproving glance before turning away, leaving them standing there, lost in the chaos of everything that had just happened.

Jax let out a breath, running a hand through his hair. "I'm sorry, Grace. I didn't want this for you. I should've seen this coming."

Grace's mind was spinning. "You should've told me about all the pressure you were under. About what was really going on behind the scenes. This isn't just about us anymore. This is about everything we've been avoiding."

She looked away, her heart sinking. The weight of Kate's words had hit harder than expected. Could she really handle this? Could they really navigate the chaos together?

Jax reached for her hand, his touch gentle. "I promise, we'll figure it out. I won't let anyone tear us apart. Not even the people closest to me."

But Grace wasn't so sure anymore. She pulled her hand away, stepping back slightly. "I don't know, Jax. I don't know if I can keep doing this. Every time I think we're making progress, something else pulls us apart."

Jax's eyes darkened with frustration, but also with the pain of seeing Grace pull away. He knew she had a point. Everything had been moving so fast, and with every step forward, it felt like they took two steps back. The pressure, the expectations—nothing had prepared them for this.

Grace took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "Maybe we need some time. To think. To figure out what we really want."

Jax stared at her for a moment, then nodded slowly. "Okay. I can respect that. But know this, Grace—I'm not going anywhere. I'm not giving up on us."

With those words, Grace felt a flicker of hope, but it was quickly overshadowed by the weight of the situation. She turned to leave, Jax following close behind, but this time, the uncertainty lingered between them. Neither of them knew what the future held.

As they left the café, the bustling streets of Paris felt less like a romantic backdrop and more like a reminder of the world they were trying to navigate. Grace couldn't shake the feeling that everything was about to get even more complicated.

Jax could only watch her walk away, hoping against hope that the future they had imagined together wasn't slipping out of reach.
