✓ 1. | SEPARATION ➸ THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

━━━━━━━━

The Day After Yesterday

━━━━━━━━

LIFE WAS DIFFERENT. It had changed in over a course of just a few days. Athena had lost everything she had: her family and herself. When she and Rebekah drove Elena and Matt off the bridge, everything she had learned about evil disappeared.

The days she spent with her human siblings, running in their field, cooking with her mother and her sister, playing tag with her brothers. It was gone. The days she spent on the Other Side with Thomas, exploring the forest, getting to know one another. It was gone though she didn't remember. The days she spent reuniting with her siblings, crying, smiling, making jokes. It was gone. But the thing that hurt her the most? She had lost herself. When Matt and Elena went off the bridge, so did she.

From that moment forward she was no longer the youngest Mikaelson sibling. She was Athena Mikaelson, the Queen of Werewolves, the female Nyx. And she would waste no time in making people suffer for hurting her family. Athena wouldn't hesitate to kill. The only thing that kept her from killing Elena (who was in transition), was that her sister needed her. Rebekah was in shambles, just like her.

Klaus was gone. They had lost another sibling and the void it left was indescribable. Athena had cried herself to sleep, clutching onto Rebekah. She wanted to make them pay. But she was too broken, too hurt to do anything. All she wanted was her family together. Instead, they had fallen apart much more than they already had.

One thing that she would forever remember about her brother was his love for art. He had drawn her a few pictures. Athena had tucked away safely in her box of memories. The next day she had admired them. But then she found one lying on the table. It was fresh, and she concluded that he must have drawn it when she and Rebekah left him.

The picture was of her in a field of flowers. It was their field they played in as kids. Athena felt the tears sting her eyes and she sniffled, pushing them away. She set it down and sent the whole table flying into the wall.

Footsteps sounded behind her and she stood up straight, growling. "What could you possibly want?" Athena spun to look at Damon. Her lips curved up into a smirk to conceal her sadness. "Aw, have you come to ask me for help with precious Elena. Tragic. I knew she wouldn't last long. Especially with two brothers fighting over her." She turned her back to him. "Oh well, she'll die now anyway."

He flashed to her, holding the white oak stake. Athena predicted it so she flashed to the back of him, grabbing the dagger and then flashed him to the wall, holding him in a chokehold. She had dropped the stake in the process but didn't pay it any mind.

All of a sudden, someone began to fire wooden bullets through the window. The girl was shot in the heart and fell to the ground, temporarily dead. Damon flashed away just in time and was in the clear.

———

When she came to, Athena saw Rebekah and Caroline both watching her. They both sighed in relief when they saw her now awake. Once they realized what they did, both of them glared at each other. Athena tried to move but couldn't. Her head lolled to the side. "What's happening?"

"Alaric outed us all to the Council," Caroline told her with a sad look. "I'm so sorry Athena."

Rebekah scoffed. "She's my sister you dimwit, not yours."

Caroline didn't appreciate the insult and was about to fire back when the wheels of the van screeched. All of the girls gasped as the van flipped over. They went flying. Finally, the car came to a stop on its side.

Athena laid her head against the car. "What the hell?"

Tyler broke off the back door and went towards Athena. She blinked confusedly. "Tyler? Caroline exclaimed his name and he went over to her after helping Athena out of the car. He set her down outside the car and then got out Caroline. She started to question him but he cut her off. "Come on, we've got to go."

Rebekah was even more confused as to why the hybrid would let them out, but not her. She wasn't going to leave her sister with those two. "Wait, what about me?"

Caroline flashed off and Athena went back for Rebekah. "We can't just leave her." Tyler smiled at her. "No worries, little sister. Rebekah is going to hold them off. You're safer with me."

His sister gaped. "Nik?" Tyler/Klaus grabbed his sister and then flashed off in the direction Caroline went.

Athena stopped when she saw Caroline kissing Tyler. However, it was Klaus she the blonde didn't know it. "Oh, my... Caroline!" She stopped and looked at her. "That's Klaus, not Tyler!"

Caroline pulled away and stepped back, gaping in shock at Tyler who was smirking. She slapped him and Athena laughed for the first time in a while. Klaus wasn't affected and smirked still. "You going to hit me again or are we going to save your friends?"

"I vote to save Rebekah!" Athena pipped, following after him.

The blonde that they left behind was still in shock but then groaned in annoyance and followed. Klaus had led them to the Old Witch house where Bonnie was with Jeremy. Klaus wanted out of Tyler's body because the Council would be coming for him, and he didn't want to be in Tyler's body when it happened.

"She said she's not strong enough," Jeremy pointed out.

Athena's brother wouldn't take no for an answer. "You were strong enough to put me in here. Surely, you're strong enough to get me out."

Bonnie was startled by what happened with Elena which they could see clearly. The witch argued, "I upset the spirits trying to save Elena. I can't use that kind of magic again. It's too dangerous."

Klaus shook with anger. "Bonnie, do the bloody spell!"

Athena put a hand on his shoulder. "She can't Nik. We'll find another way ok?"

Not even her soothing was helping. He pushed her hand off and then ripped open his shirt. Claws extended on his right hand and he began to rip Tyler's heart out. They all watched with wide eyes. "I'm ripping Tyler's heart out. If I die, I'll jump into someone else." Klaus looked at Jeremy. "Maybe you."

"You're hurting him! Stop! Stop!" Caroline yelled.

"Nik, stop it!" Athena yelled.

But Klaus wasn't listening. "Pick, Bonnie! You or Tyler!"

More yelling was exchanged as he continued to rip out Tyler's heart. Athena didn't care about Tyler, but Caroline did. Caroline was apart of her pack and if she lost Tyler for good, her pack mate wouldn't be the same and she didn't wish that. Bonnie yelled, "Fine, I'll do it! Just stop."

He took his hand out of his chest and then took a deep breath. "Good. Let's begin."

———

Bonnie had begun chanting. She held her hands on the side of Tyler's head. Athena could tell she was channeling dark magic, she could feel it in the air. But the girl wanted her brother back, there would be consequences, that was just life.

Consequences were something else she had learned overnight. Athena had learned that she couldn't be afraid of fighting anymore. People would die, people would suffer at the hands of her family and she would just have to live with that. Even if that's just not who she was, Athena would have to grow up.

Tyler opened his eyes with a start and looked up at them. Caroline smiled. "Tyler?"

He smiled back at her. "Caroline. Hey."

When he tried to get up, he fell to the floor. Before Athena could react, Klaus woke up in the coffin and then grabbed her, flashing them away. They came to a stop and Athena realized that they were at the Mansion.

"Nik, we have to go back for Rebekah!"

Klaus held her by the shoulders, staring her straight in the eyes. "She can take care of herself."

Athena wasn't having it. She remembered what she told herself about consequences. Her calm face switched to a glare. "We are going back for Rebekah."

He glared right back at her. "No, we aren't."

Three of Elena's blood bags lied nearby and she flashed to them, holding one up. Klaus saw and then sighed, putting his hands up with a calm look. "Athena-"

She threw it against the wall, earning a yell of protest from him. Athena grabbed the other ones while tears streamed down her face. What had become of him? He really wanted to make hybrids instead of living with his own family? "Drop them, Athena."

The girl began to cry. "I thought you were dead! Rebekah and I cried and mourned you! And you come back and you don't even care! All you care about are your stupid hybrids! We have always been there for you and you don't care!"

"Put them down, Athena!" he yelled.

But she wasn't going to budge. Not this time. She continued to cry in front of him. "Well guess what Nik? I don't care either!" Athena squeezed the blood bags and blood splattered everywhere. Klaus yelled. She cried and threw the blood bags at him. "Enjoy your family Nik!"

Athena flashed out of the house and Klaus shook his head. He threw things around the house in his anger. But that was the thing. Athena didn't cry for long. She wiped the tears and sat down on the roof she had appeared at. The moon was high in the sky and her sadness faded.

Just a day after she killed Elena Gilbert, Athena had become a completely different person.

———

My poor baby Athena! This girl honestly deserves Thomas right about now and it hurts me not to skip ahead. But, I already know for a fact that I will have to skip episodes. So the book may or may not be coming to a close in about fifteen chapters or less.
