Part 29 | And Suddenly

NAIRA

We never wish to wake up

from dreams,

It's the nightmares

That leaves us aghast,

And we desperately wish

We never slept in first place.

" Hey! " I felt a hand caressing my forehead.

" Dhruv! What happened? " my voice was hoarse.

" You had an accident but you are fine now. Here, have some water. " He held a bottle inserted with a straw and urged me to take a few sips.

The clock Struck at 1. It's past midnight!

" How long have I been sleeping! "

" You have been unconscious for about 7 hours. " He said and helped me sit upright.

I realised I had a small white bandage on my left temple. My body felt numb and my head a bit heavy.

A female doctor entered with a smile, " Mrs. Oberoi it's good to see you awake. Let's quickly check your vitals." I gave the doctor a small smile.

" How's she? " Dhruv questioned.

" She is fine Mr. Dixit . Ma'am There's no major injury. There are a few bruises in your left arm and a cut in your forehead, not so deep. It will heal in a few days. I have prescribed painkillers, You might feel headaches and mild pain, but There's nothing to worry. You are weak still so Take good rest. " I nodded and thanked her before she left the room.

" Oh my god, Naira " Aditi rushed and engulfed me in a tight hug. " You were unconscious and speechless when we brought you in here, I went nuts for a minute. " I patted her back.

Rudy came in, " Thank God, you woke up. " He gave me a smile but it wasn't a real one.

" Tell me He's fine, Please. "

His face dropped. All three exchanged glances as He sat beside me.

" P- Please." I looked at him with pleading eyes.

Rudy squeezed my hand, " Relax Naira, he'll be fine. We brought him in here bleeding and unconscious. They said he has an airline fracture in his hand. A piece of glass had cut his shoulder and his forehead. They are treating him in the next ward, He's still in unconscious state. "

" I want to see him. " I mumbled.

Standing Outside the room where he laid speechless and in deep sleep, his heart beating in a steady rate, I looked at him through the glass that separated us.

His forehead was covered entirely with a big white bandage so was his right shoulder. His left wrist and palm wrapped with a crepe bandage and the other hand had a tube attached to it.

I ripped off my gaze from him and sat on the metal chair. A lone tear slipped down my eyes.

" He did this to s-save me. " My voice cracked mid sentence.

" Naira don't beat yourself on this dear. " Dad warned.

I shook my head, " N-no no he is here because he .. he tried to protect me. It's on me. He is not waking up. I- I should have... He saved me mom! " I burst into tears as she took me into her embrace.

" Shush... Relax Naira. He will do anything for his family, you are his love! I would have been surprised only if he didn't do this. " I sniffed.

" The doctor said there's nothing to worry, he will wake up soon. Okay! " I nodded wiping my tears.

" He would not like to see his wife crying. " Arjun said.

Rudy kneeled before me. " You need to rest, Princess. "

I refused, " I'm fine. I am staying here. I'll wait for him. "

I will wait to look into those hazel eyes again.

KARTIK

I glanced towards my left to see her sleeping like a baby, with her lips slightly parted and her hands clutching the seat beat.

She looks so cute !

With our hands intertwined, I grazed the back of her hand with my thumb, wanting to feel her presence.

" Na...Naira "

My eyes captured a jet black Range Rover Sport in the rear view mirror before a crashing sound of glasses hit my ears.

I have to save her.

" Naira "

I held her in my arms, her body shuddered in fear. The collision threw us apart, I saw her head clashing against the car window.

" Call the Doctor! NOW! Kartik!"

A stinging pain hit straight up my brain, pounding against my skull. I couldn't feel my body. Plain numbness was all I could feel.

A million black dots blurred my vision. No, I can't slip away.

I need to stay awake.

I have to save her.

" Mr. Oberoi? Sir! "

I wanted to close my eyes, it was hurting. The dark pit was calling to comfort and I let it engulf me after I heard her say my name.

I woke up to the white walls of the hospital room. Beeping sounds played in the background as the darkness faded away.

" Mom! Dad! " I croaked weakly slowly regaining my consciousness.

" Oh darling! Thank god, You scared us all. " Mom placed a tender kiss on my temple.

" Good morning, buddy. " Dad smiled standing beside mom. The bed was raised to a comfortable position.

" I am Dr. Mark. How are you feeling Mr. Oberoi? " A young man in white coat questioned.

" Numb ! " I replied, leaning against the head of the bed.

" Hey! " On the other side of my bed stood Arjun, Aditi and Dhruv.

" For how long was I passed out? "

Arjun sighed, " For about a day and half. "

" Mr. Oberoi, fortunately you didn't have any internal bleeding and- "

" Where's she? " I abruptly interrupted the doctor.

There was no sight of her in the room. Why isn't she here?

" Where's my wife? " I demanded, raising my voice.

" Sir you have to calm down! You just woke up. " I glared at the nurse.

" Don't f****ing ask me to calm down! Get me MY WIFE now! " My voice boomed in the air.

The doctor spoke, " Mr. Oberoi please relax, you are weak. your wife is just fine. "

" I need to see her myself. "

My restless heart needs her.

Ignoring everyone's protests I pulled out the tube from my hand and took steps to the doorway.

That's when I heard a rush of footsteps, I noticed her rushing towards the room followed by my brother, dodging everything and everyone in her path.

She stopped a few feet away from me. I took in her disheaveled state. She was panting with her shoulders hung low, bags under her eyes clearly showed she was sleep deprived.

She covered her mouth and let out a cry as emotions came crashing down at her all at once. I beckoned her with open arms.

" Come here, baby. "

Not a blink of eye and she threw herself on me, her hands around my neck while I held her by waist.

I felt relief spread through my blood.

" why did you do that! Why did you do that. " she smacked my chest and sobbed in my arms.

" I could have lost you. Do you have any idea How scared I was. You - you weren't conscious. You wouldn't wake up, for - for an entire day Kartik. Heck, A whole day! I love you why do you want to leave me. I love you so much. " She hid her face in my bare chest.

"I love you baby. And no one's leaving Okay. I am right here. " She looked at me with teary eyes.

I smiled and planted a kiss on her forehead.

" Are you hurt ? " I scanned her body for injuries.

" Just a little sore, I am fine. " She assured.

Thank heavens

She again smacked my chest, " ouch, what was that for? "

" Why are you out of our bed! You are all injured and weak. " She glared at me.

" I am not weak, I am fine! " she made me lie down on the bed.

" You have to let them take care of you Kartik. " The doctor then checked my vitals.

" Everything looks good, you need to have plenty of rest for the next 2 days. I have prescribed medicines and your wounds must be dressed alternative days till it heals. We need to run a few tests just to be sure. You have stay here one more day for observation Mr. Oberoi. " He explained.

I nodded, " Thank you doctor. "

" Take care, good day. " With that he left us.

" You all should go home and take some rest. " I said to my family.

" Yeah, I'll stay back with him. " Rudy piped in. " Beautiful, you should rest for a while, you haven't got any sleep since the time you woke up. "

" Rudy why don't you find yourself a girl and spare me some time with my wife. " I heaved a loud sigh while others chuckled.

" Let's leave them alone while we go home and refresh. " Dad announced and they all left after asking us to take rest.

Once they vacated the room, I moved aside and making some space for her beside me in the bed.

" Come over. " She hesitated but I insisted.

" I am afraid I am going to hurt you. " She carefully laid beside me, her head rested on my chest while I wrapped my arms around her waist comfortably.

" That's impossible. Don't worry about me sugarplum, sleep now. " her eyes were begging to shut.

She titled her head and with her chin resting on my chest, she stared at me.

I smiled, " what "

Looking deep into my eyes, she said

" Don't close those eyes on me. Ever again. "

I kissed her hair, " Okay. "

" Okay. "

She closed her eyes and Instantly dozed off. I kept caressing her hair, watching her sleep at peace finally.

After about 30 minutes, a nurse entered with a bouquet of flowers.

" This was delivered in your name Sir."

Saying she placed it on the bed stand.

The note stuck between the bunch of flowers caught my eyes. I held the note which read,

" I am a very impatient man,

Mr. Oberoi

I guess now you will come down for a serious negotiation

Get well soon "

I crushed the card and clenched my fist in anger. Naira stirred in sleep as if she felt the rage in me.

I released my fingers and wrapped it around her as she snuggled more into me.

" I will make them pay for this, baby. "
