Chapter 214
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 64: Ayla âSo, what does this actually mean?â Theo asked after we shared what we found. âWhile I can admit that this is interesting, right now, it doesnât seem much more than a fun fact. Not anything to warrant concern.â
âWe have a few theories,â I said, holding his hand. âMost of them do come back to the Waar P akâs idea that we would take over the packs.â
Theo snorted. âEven if this did give us the power to even think about it, thatâs not what either of us wants.â
âThat may be true,â Professor Armand said. âBut when you have people like this who have spent decades believing it would happen, youâll have a hard time convincing them otherwise. Besides, itâs not just you two theyâd be worried about, but your children as well.â
My hand instinctively went to my belly, praying for an extra layer of protection that still didnât seem like enough. Theoâs hand tightened around mine. As much as he was trying to silently reassure me, we both felt that fear and anger through our mate bond.
âThen itâs a good thing weâre taking them out once and for all,â he said, working to sound calmer than he was.
âSpeaking of,â Randy interjected. âIf you plan on taking offensive action soon, Alpha Harden wants to be here. I know Alpha Kingston is also on his way. It may also be time to bring in a couple of the other Alphas. Any that three of you can trust. This is going to cross pack borders. Itâs best to have the support where necessary.â
âYou know of more members than any of us,â Theo said. âYou said there were multiple ranking members in the Waar P ak. Are there any whose Alpha can be trusted? Those ranking members should be our first targets.
âMost of the younger Alphas can be approached,â Randy said. âIâll get you a list and we can discuss it with Alpha Harden and Alpha Kingston.â
Theo nodded.
âWeâre going to have to find a reason for these Alphaâs to be visiting,â I said. âIf someone catches on to their coming and going, itâs not going to look well in our favor about not wanting to take over.â
Randy shrugged. âNot necessarily,â he assured me. âTheo has only been the acting Alpha. The other packs know he is scheduled to take over on the solstice.â
âSeveral plan to be in attendance,â Theo confirmed. âItâs typical for other Alphas to visit the upcoming Alpha to confirm continued alliance agreements. Or establish new ones. Weâll just have to be careful.â
âOkay,â I said, hoping he was right.
âIâm going to make some calls,â Randy said, standing from his chair. âIâll be staying in the area. Let me know if you need me. I wouldnât mind seeing whatâs behind that door either.â
âWeâll keep you posted,â Theo said.
âHave you made any progress with that?â I asked after Randy was gone.
âItâs going to be harder than we thought, but weâll get there,â he said.
âHey, guys,â Briggs said from the lounge across the room. He hadnât pulled himself away from the books throughout our entire conversation. âCheck this out.â He got up and came over, setting the book he had in front of us. âThis is one of the books we pulled from our library here in the packhouse. Pages have been torn out.â
âWhat is the book about?â
âItâs another book on folklore,â he said. âBut this one caters more to Greytooth history and tradition. The table of contents says there should be a chapter here titled Founderâs Blood and the Solstice Moon.â
âThat doesnât sound like any of the stories Iâve heard,â Theo said.
âMe either,â I said.
âYeah, it doesnât ring a bell for me either,â Briggs said. âBut someone thought it was interesting enough to keep. And I think they were keeping others from learning about it. Iâll try to figure out who took this out of the library.â
âItâs worth a shot,â Theo said. âIâll talk to Dad, too. See if he knows more.â
âBut weâll do all that tomorrow,â I said. âYou need to get some rest, Briggs. Weâll pick back up first thing in the morning.â
Briggs said goodnight and headed to his place. I stood up and started re-organizing the documents sprawled across the coffee table. We knew it would take a few days for us to go through it all with a fine tooth comb. We didnât want to miss a single bit of information. But that would be easier with fresh eyes and a clean workspace. I was putting some of the books back in the trunk when I saw Harryâs journal sitting at the bottom.
âIdiot,â I blurted out. âSorry, not you guys. Me,â I clarified when Theo gave me a look. I lifted the book from the trunk. âHow much do you want to bet it was Harry who took those pages?â
âDa mn,â Theo said, scooting up next to me as I flipped. through the pages. âHe did seem to know a lot of things we didnât. Did you finish deciphering that thing?â
I shook my head. âNo, and unfortunately the code started to change later on.â I looked at them. âAs his mind deteriorated he seemed to become more paranoid. But Iâll get there.â
Theoâs hand went to the nape of my neck, pulling me in to kiss my temple.
âOkay,â he said softly. âJust be careful. If working on that starts to get to you... If it starts to bring back memories...â
âIâll be okay, babe,â I assured him, squeezing his hand.
He nodded but was still worried. âIf the nightmares come back...â
âIâll hand it over to Briggs,â I interjected. My hand went to my stomach. âI have enough keeping me awake all night already.â
Theo smiled softly, resting his hand on mine over our growing pup.
âSpeaking of,â he said as he pulled me closer, âdid you remember to get a doctorâs appointment?â
I smiled. âOh, your mother took care of that for me.â
Theo laughed with a shake of his head. âOf course she did. If she ever gets too overbearing, you tell me. Sheâll get carried away if you let her.â
âNo, appreciate her being here,â I said genuinely. âIt means the world to know I still have family with me.â
âAlways, love.â
