Chapter 38
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 38: Briggs Theo wasnât answering his phone and I was freaking out. He was going to do something stup*d. If he showed up in Sablemane territory and tried to get to Ayla, Kingston would kill him on the spot. My only hope was that Ayla wouldnât risk war breaking out because of her.
âBriggs, whatâs wrong?â Mina asked as she met me in the hall. She could tell I was upset.
âYour cousin is about to start a f**king war, thatâs what,â said, making sure not to direct any anger toward her.
âWhoa,â Mina said, her eyes going wide. âHold on. What are you talking about?â
I was tired of being in the dark about this. I would find out who Ayla really was once and for all.
âWould Ayla take money from her mother?â I asked.
Mina scoffed. âYeah, sure, like Aunt Marie would ever have any money for her to take.â
âWhat?â
âMarie has a gambling addiction,â Mina said as if I should have known that. âAyla has been paying for everything for all three of them since she was fourteen. Including Kyleeâs high school and college tuition.â
I felt my face go pale and I thought I would vomit. Realization washed over Minaâs face.
1/6 O Chapter 38. Briggs 1200 Wouchers âWait. Are you saying Kylee said Ayla stole money from Aunt Marie?â
I looked her in the eye. âTheoâs on the warpath. Heâs going after Ayla, and heâs going to get himself killed.â
âAyla would never hurt him. Sheâll be able to clear this all up.â
âNo, Mina,â I said, dreading what I had to do. âAyla isnât a Greytooth anymore. Sheâs not here in our territory.â
âExcuse me?â she said, stepping back from me.
I looked around, not wanting to have this conversation overheard, and pulled her into a nearby room. I made sure it was empty before shutting the door.
âWhat the f**k is going on, Briggs?â
âMina, Iâm going to tell you everything, but I need you to promise me you wonât say anything to Kylee or Marie. Not yet, at least,â I said. âPlease.â
She crossed her arms over her chest. âAnd if I donât?â
I sighed. âThen Iâll still tell you. But it could cause a lot of problems for everyone if you say anything. So, I hope you wonât.â
Her face softened slightly. âFine.â
I nodded. I was terrified of what this would do to our relationship. I didnât want to lose her over this, but I wouldnât keep it from her either.
âAyla cut her ties with the pack about a month ago,â I said.
2/6 Chapter 38: Briggs 1288 Nouchers âWhy the hell would she do that?â Concern and confusion were all over her face.
âBecause sheâs Theoâs fated mate, and he rejected her.â
I watched as shock was quickly replaced with rage. âAre you f**king kidding me right now? Why the hell would he reject her?â
I grimaced.
âIf you tell me he rejected her for Kylee, Iâm the one who just might start a war.â
âItâs not that simple,â I said.
Ttold her the rest of the details, the reasons why they both rejected each other. At least, the parts of Aylaâs side that I knew, although admittedly, that wasnât much. When I told her about Ayla losing her wolf and her car accident, her eyes were rimmed with tears of sadness and anger. It was breaking my heart.
âAyla was in Sablemane territory when she crashed,â I continued. âAlpha Kingston saved her and took her in. He likes her. A lot, from what I can tell. She was still a rogue the last time I saw her, but she wonât be for long. If he hasnât already brought her into the pack.â
âSo you think if Theo goes near her, Kingston will kill him,â Mina said.
âProbably,â I said, âI donât know for sure.â
âAyla wonât let that happen,â Mina rushed. âAlthough, right now, I wouldnât consider it much of a loss. Iâm tempted to kill 3/6 Chapter 38: Boggs him myself.â
âMina...â
288 Vouchers âI get that heâs your Alpha and your best friend, Briggs, but Aylaâs my cousin,â Mina said before turning away. âWhy would she do that?â
âShe wanted to be free of the bond...â
âNot Ayla,â she shot back at me. âKylee. I knew she could be selfish, but this is borderline vindictive. Although, I shouldnât be surprised after our conversation last night.â
âWhat conversation?â I asked, my hackles raised.
âI asked her why she was going through with this mating when she knew they werenât fated mates. She said she knew they were meant to be together even if the goddess didnât,â Mina said bitterly. âI asked what if he meets his mate? What would she do then?â
âWhat did she say?â
Mina made a face. âKylee said she would just have to understand that Theo was hers.â
âWhat the f**k?â I said, sickened at Kyleeâs callousness and blatant sacrilege.
âHey, Iâm sure your Alpha had a hand in this,â she snapped. âHeâs been stringing her along for over two years now. You canât blame her for getting so attached.â
Did she just say two years? Had Kylee been telling people they had been together for over two years?
4/6 O Chapter 38: Briggs âMina, theyâve barely been together a year,â I corrected.
288 Vouchers Minaâs face went slack. âNo, theyâve been together for nearly two and a half years. They met when she visited the college her senior year.â
I shook my head. âNo, Theo didnât even meet her until a few months before we graduated. They only started dating a couple months before his dadâs diagnosis.â
Anger flared through my mate again. Iâd be terrified if she ever directed that look at me. Her hands clenched into fists and she was shaking with rage.
âThat manipulative little b*tch,â she hissed, heading toward the door. âIâm going to tear her apart...â
I grabbed her around the waist before she could leave.
âYou canât tell her,â I insisted. âShe doesnât know about Ayla and Theo. Neither of them do. And they donât know she went rogue either.â
âWell, theyâre sure as hell about to find out,â she seethed.
âNot yet, please.â
âWhy?â she yelled, pushing me away forcefully.
âBecause I donât want to give them the opportunity to talk their way out of this,â I burst out. âBesides, Ayla doesnât want Kylee to know theyâre mates. Even now. She insisted on it.â
âOf course she did,â Mina said bitterly, tears forming again. âD*mn her martyr syndrome.â
I wasnât going to confront Kylee yet. But I would make sure I 5/6 |||
Chapter 36. Briggs got as much information on Ayla as I could to encourage Theo to make the right decision after all this.
288 (Vouchers âYou said Ayla paid for everything for years?â I said. âHow did she manage that when she didnât even graduate high school?â
Mina made a face. âYouâre joking, right? She told you that, too? Ayla graduated with honors at fifteen. Sheâs practically a f**king genius.â
âWait, then why was she just an assistant at the publishing house?â
Mina rolled her eyes. âTheo really didnât bother to learn a d*mn thing about her, did he?â
I didnât want to answer.
âShe wasnât a da*n assistant. Sheâs one of their authors,â she clarified. âOne of their most successful authors, actually.â
