Reborn Through Fire
Chapter 1418 If You Canât Walk, Then Donât Kisa instinctively reached out and gently rubbed her stomach, finding comfort in the thought of this.
Kisa didnât know how long she had been waiting, but she felt increasingly cold. Her legs and feet were almost numb from the cold. She had nowhere else to go, as there was a long stretch of wasteland outside the cemetery. With her reliance on a cane to even walk now, she knew she couldnât even entertain the thought of walking out to hail a taxi.
After waiting for a long, long time, the chilly wind blew around her, rustling the branches of the trees and pricking at her nerves. She couldnât tell whether it was the cold or the fear that made her tremble all over. She couldnât resist looking back, and the more she looked, the more she felt a chill run down her spine.
At this point, she even wished Anthony would come down from wherever he was anyone, really- just so she wouldnât have to be so scared. With a deep breath, she leaned on her cane and prepared to climb up to find Anthony. It never occurred to her that one day she would seek safety from Anthony himself.
Kisa raised her cane, ready to make a move, when a beam of headlights suddenly appeared in the distance. Her heart racing, she squeezed the cane tightly, wondering who it could be â Gilbert or Adrien? The car pulled up about 30 feet away, and she held her breath as she watched a figure emerge from the vehicle. As he approached, she felt a wave of warmth spread through her chest â it was Gilbert.
He had come back for her, just as he promised he would.
As Gilbert stepped out of the car, he did not immediately approach her. Instead, he stood there, his eyes fixed on the woman illuminated by the headlights. Her face was flushed from the cold, and she sat on the staircase. Gilbert could not help but feel a mix of emotions as he watched her â relief that he had found her, annoyance that she was just sitting there.
The man lurking in the darkness had a heavy scowl on his face. He had not left at all. His car had been parked outside all along, waiting for the woman to step out. But she had stubbornly refused to make a move and had not even bothered to give him a call. âIsnât she the one whoâs scared of ghosts and things that go bump in the night? Yet here she is, brazenly sitting on the steps, defying her fears.â
The longer Gilbert thought about it, the angrier he got. âI should have just left and let this heartless woman fend for herself!â But he could not help but come back. He was a glutton for punishment. He cursed himself in his mind but could not bring himself to step forward.
Kisa could not see his face clearly, but she had a hunch that he was in a bad mood. She did not expect him to come over and help her up; the fact that he had even come back to find her was good enough.
She reminded herself not to expect too much. She leaned on her crutches to stand up but felt a sharp pain in her knees as she straightened her legs, probably from too long sitting. Her feet tingled like they were being pricked by needles. She almost lost her balance but managed to steady herself by gripping her crutches tightly.
When Gilbert saw her body swaying, his legs acted before his brain. He took a step forward, but quickly retracted it when he saw that Kisa had regained her balance.
Kisa felt a bit frustrated seeing him standing there motionless. âEven if heâs mad at me and doesnât want to talk to me, Iâm carrying his child. Doesnât he care?â She scolded him in her mind, but her face still wore a bright smile.
She turned to the man and said, âMy legs are numb. Can you come over and carry me to the car?â
âNo!â the man replied coldly.
Kisaâs smile froze, and she muttered, âMy legs are really numb, and I hurt my knee. I canât walk.â
âIf you canât walk, then donât. Keep staying here if you like it so much,â Gilbert said as he started to walk toward his car.
Kisa panicked and hobbled toward the car with her crutches, enduring the prickling pain in her feet.
