Chapter 1469
Reborn Through Fire
âWhere are you?â Gilbert asked.
âIâm with Thomas at the moment-â Before Kisa could finish her sentence, a flurry of urgent footsteps interrupted her. Startled, she quickly hung up the phone and darted behind a nearby tree trunk.
Suddenly, Harry and a few bodyguards came running in her direction. Harry looked around frantically before fixing his gaze on a particular spot on the ground.
âYou cry every damn day for years, never giving it a rest, as if youâre afraid people will forget you exist, right?â Harry snarled, stomping on the ground and barking orders to his men. âGet her some food later so she doesnât keep making a fuss.â
âYes, Harry,â they replied obediently.
Once the men left, Kisa carefully inspected the spot where Harry had stomped and discovered a hidden lock within the grass. The grass around the lock seemed to be slightly loosened, so she lifted it, revealing a hidden iron door beneath it. The sobbing sound from earlier had come from behind that door.
âWhoâs trapped inside?â she wondered.
Worried that someone might come, she quickly covered the iron door with grass and hurried toward the front yard.
Thomas was already waiting at the front gate and rushed over when he saw her approach. âMrs.
Kooper, where did you go? I couldnât find you anywhere.â
âSorry. I just went to the restroom.â Harry was watching her closely, so Kisa deliberately turned to him and said, âBy the way, Harry, I heard a strange noise when I was in the bathroom earlier. It was really creepy.â
âOhâ¦â Harry chuckled. âThat is just our Tibetan Mastiff.â
âTibetan Mastiff?â
âAbsolutely! Mr. Tanner has a massive Tibetan Mastiff. But itâs bitten someone, and he has to lock it up in the basement of the backyard. That beast keeps trying to escape and makes a lot of noise. Didnât it scare you?â
Kisa shook her head and replied, âAs long as itâs locked up, Iâm good.â
âIndeed, Mr. Tanner couldnât bring himself to put the poor thing down. After all, heâs grown attached to it over time.â
Kisa chuckled and nodded, âThatâs my godfather, always so kind-hearted.â
On the way back, Kisa asked Thomas, âDid my godfather use to have a Tibetan Mastiff?â
âYep, he did have one. But he stopped keeping it after it bit someone, and I have no idea where it went.
If Harry hadnât mentioned it today, I would have assumed that beast was long gone.â
Kisa furrowed her brow. âIt couldnât possibly be a Tibetan Mastiff locked up in that basement. The sobbing sound was filled with sadness, anger, and despair, making the emotions incredibly complex.
Could an animal even have such complex feelings?â
She could not shake the feeling that it might be a person locked up in there. âBut if it is a person, why is the person speaking up?
âHey, Thomas,â she asked, âHow well do you know my godfather?â
Thomas thought for a moment and said, âI know him pretty well. I used to hang out at Uncle Adrienâs house all the time when I was younger.â
âSo, what is the deal with him and his ex-girlfriend? I heard my grandmother talking about it earlier.
Not wanting Thomas to overthink, Kisa explained further, âMy godfather has never told me about these private matters before. But when I heard Mrs. Tanner Sr. talk like that, it piqued my curiosity, you know?â
âNot much of a secret, really.â Thomas gave her a warm smile and said, âRumor has it that Uncle Adrien once had a girlfriend whom he adored, but her family thought he was too poor for her and refused to let them be together. So, he started working hard to make more money and prove himself to the family. But hereâs the kicker-when he finally got rich, he left his loyal girlfriend behind. I asked him why he did that, and he told me he just didnât feel the love anymore and parting ways was the best ending.â
