Chapter 206 - Chess (I)
Reborn into a Hamster for 233 Days
Thatâs so tragic,â Xiao Yu said.
âUhh... yeah!â Yan Jin had wanted to say that he didnât care that much about it, but Xiao Yuâs words presented an unexpected opportunity to him. He acted pitiful and added, âRight, so donât I get a consolatory hug?â
âIsnât it a little late to play the pity card? You didnât sound like you needed any pity at all earlier,â Xiao Yu said ruthlessly.
âI was trying to be strong.â
âDonât make me laugh.â
âWell, thatâs how it is then.â Yan Jin didnât mind losing the unexpected potential benefits and directly admitted, âI grew up from a very young age with my grandfather overseas and wasnât at all involved with anything here. So, I donât care that much about the relationship with my parents. You married me, not my family. I didnât care about them to begin with anyways.â
Xiao Yu raised his voice. âI married you? Havenât we already agreed that youâre marrying into my family?â
Yan Jin saw Xiao Yuâs puffed-up red cheeks and tugged on them.
âHey! Only my family can play with my cheeks. You have to first agree to enter my family...â Xiao Yu sputtered while covering his cheeks.
âOkay, sure.â Yan Jin played along and tugged and kneaded Xiao Yuâs cheeks to his heartâs content.
After they played around for a while, Xiao Yu finally remembered that they had been talking about serious matters. For once, he hadnât been successfully deflected by Yan Jin.
âDidnât you say once that your mother passed away?â
â...Yes.â Yan Jin was a little caught off guard but quickly recovered. He added calmly, âI was very young when it happened, so I donât have much recollection of her.â
âHow are things between you and your stepmother then?â
Although Xiao Yu had a very good stepmother, he wasnât naive enough to think that all stepmoms around the world were like Aunt Fang. Furthermore, Yan Jin was a âwhite princeâ. Heâd seen enough enough dramas about the princes of aristocratic families to draw his own conclusions.
âWhere are you going with this?â Yan Jin rapped on Xiao Yuâs forehead lightly with his knuckles.
âOww,â Xiao Yu complained. âDidnât you promise you wouldnât eavesdrop on my thoughts?â
âWhen did I promise that?â
âRight now.â Xiao Yu started to act like a rascal.
âI wouldnât mind agreeing to that, but itâs not something I can control. Itâs like...â Yan Jin searched for an appropriate analogy. âItâs like breathing. I can consciously hold my breath for a while, but not for long periods. If I donât consciously think about it, my body will instinctively breathe on its own.â
Xiao Yu snorted to himself unhappily under his breath.
âAnd, I donât need to listen in on your thoughts to know what kind of strange things youâre thinking about.â Yan Jin tugged on Xiao Yuâs reddened cheeks. âItâs written all over your face, stupid.â
âHmph, youâre the stupid one! Your whole family is stupid!â
âAside from me, my âwhole familyâ is just you,â Yan Jin said.
âDonât exaggerate. Even if you donât count your evil stepmom, you still have your dad and grandpa.â
âMy what and what...?â Yan Jin didnât know whether to laugh or cry. âMy stepmother and I just mind our own business, so she doesnât bully me. In any case, she technically canât be counted as part of the Yan Family main line anymore since Iâm the head of the Yan Family now. Neither my father nor my grandfather can block my decision. So, you donât have to worry about being bullied by an evil mother-in-law or being bribed with a couple million yuan to get lost.
By this point, Xiao Yu felt that he shouldnât dig any further into this, so he unwillingly grunted, âMhm.â
Yan Jin observed Xiao Yuâs downcast expression with a raised eyebrow. âDid you really want my family to attend the wedding that much?â
âNot really, just...â Xiao Yu shook his head and then nodded. âAfter all, itâs natural to wish for a perfect wedding. But, thereâs not much we can do with your familyâs special circumstances...â
âAlright then, seeing that youâre begging me, Iâll make sure to satisfy your request,â Yan Jin declared.
âWait, whoâs begging you? Didnât you also just say that itâs not possible...â Xiao Yu was utterly confused.
âNothing is difficult enough for a determined person. Thereâs always a way.â
Xiao Yu was overjoyed. âThen, when can we talk to your parents?â
âLetâs go after YL develops a little further. My dad is an entrepreneur; business achievements are sure to move him.â
âIâm so motivated to work now,â Xiao Yu said.
âHmm? Werenât you motivated before? Shirking your duties calls for punishment.â
Yan Jinâs hands slipped lower from Xiao Yuâs cheeks, over his sensitive neck, down to Xiao Yuâs waist. It seemed that their âfunâ could start at any second.
âNono, thatâs not what I meant...â
Xiao Yu didnât mind having âfunâ in the office, but he did mind Yan Jin doubting his professionalism.
Xiao Yu loved his work more than anything else. He wouldnât compromise on this.
Xiao Yu gave Yan Jin an accusatory glare.
Coincidentally, Yan Jin glanced around and saw the documents Xiao Yu had rolled into his âmicrophoneâ earlier. âHey, these documents are important in our meetings. Theyâre so crumpled now... Donât forget to reprint them before the meeting,â he reminded.
Xiao Yu: â...â
âAlright, I admit Iâve been slacking off a little,â Xiao Yu said in self-reflection. Then, he added, âItâs not my fault though. Itâs lonely without any competition. SI is pretty much sleepwalking. Weâve suddenly become the ruler of City S, so... I canât find any motivation...â
It wasnât only Xiao Yu. After the Autumn Conference, all of YL was relaxing. For the design department, Xiao Yuâs draft approval rate decreased by fifty percent. Most of the drafts didnât look anywhere close to the caliber that the top design company in City S should have.
âSI wonât fall so easily, the Nan Family even less so.â Yan Jin was probably the only person worrying about the future during such a relaxed situation.
Yan Jin carefully scrutinized SIâs movements after the Autumn Conference and found them almost unbearable to look at. He guessed that on top of underestimating the difficulty of entering the jewelry industry, the Nan family didnât have time to manage SI. They were busy resolving matters with Nan Chan.
However, he did find one thing strange. SIâs slumber was lasting a little too long.
Logically speaking, Yan Jin didnât think it should take the Nan Family this long to make adjustments even under the worst conditions for them. They were one of the only families able to compete with the Yan Family. Surely they had this amount of power.
There was another long-standing issue that had caused Yan Jinâs doubts to become worries: Chu Geâs disappearance.
He never would have guessed that their time on the ambulance was the last time he would see Chu Ge.
In the two months following the incident, Yan Jin didnât hear anything from Chu Ge, nor anything about Chu Ge from anyone else.
Something had probably happened...
âYour phone is ringing!â Xiao Yu shouted in Yan Jinâs ear.
Yan Jin jumped back in shock.
âWhat are you thinking about? I yelled for you so many times.â Xiao Yu stuffed the phone into Yan Jinâs hands. âHow did you not hear it ringing for so long? This guy is pretty persistent too; itâs his third time calling. Who is this?â
Yan Jin unlocked his phone, and his eyes unconsciously widened.
He stared at the screen for a long time.
Then, in a regular tone and a calm expressions, he said, âItâs Chu Ge.â
âChu Ge? Finally! We havenât talked in ages; I donât know what heâs been up to. Ask him how heâs doing for me and tell him I loved his late wedding gift.â
âGot it. Go back to drawing designs; I wonât bother you.â Yan Jin walked into the breakroom and locked the door.
......
âHello, who is this?â Yan Jin knew Chu Ge had probably revealed his identity, so he was a little cautious in case someone else was using Chu Geâs phone to call.
âItâs me.â
The gloomy reply came so fast that Yan Jin had a moment of doubt.
âItâs me, Chu Ge. I have some things to ask you.â
Yan Jin was able to discern it was indeed Chu Geâs voice from the longer reply and relaxed. He replied normally, âHowâs Nan Chan doing?â
âSheâs doing okay. According to the diagnosis, itâs not impossible for her to return to a normal person with some rest, medication, and physical therapy.â
âRest might be hard to come by since sheâs YLâs chairmwoman.â Yan Jin then added humorously, âFor her to truly rest, I fear youâll have to take the position.â
There was a silence.
Then, Chu Geâs next words caused Yan Jin to drop his phone.
The phone fell to the ground. With a heavy beep, the call terminated.
But, the final words Yan Jin had heard were like a scalding brand pressed against his heart.
âWould you believe it if I told you your next words determine whether Nan Chan can recover? At least, I believe so. I donât care about anything else, just one thingâââ
âDid you know that Aunt Du didnât die, but has instead been staying at the Summer Springs Third Clinic for the last twenty years?â
Yan Jin bent down and picked up the phone. When he stood up, he saw spots and colors flash in his vision.
Fortunately, those visions quickly faded.
He redialed Chu Geâs number.
âSorry, I dropped the phone and it ended the call.â
âMmm.â
Yan Jin took a deep breath and slowly said, âI know everything. Youâre correct.â
The call sank into a tense, oppressive silence.
