Chapter 24

Childhood Dreams and timeless love

oneshots (Jikook)

The small town of Busan was a place where everyone knew each other. It was a town where summer days were spent by the beach, and winters were cozy with warm fires and hot chocolate. Jeon Jungkook, a boy of seven, had just moved to this town with his family. With big brown eyes and a serious expression, Jungkook was the type of child who observed more than he spoke. His family had moved into a small house near the beach, a house that was filled with the scent of fresh paint and new beginnings.

The first time Jungkook saw Park Jimin, it was at the playground near the beach. Jimin was playing on the swings, his bright laughter carried by the wind. With golden hair that shone in the sunlight and a smile that could light up the darkest night, Jimin was the exact opposite of Jungkook. He was surrounded by other children, all of them drawn to his warmth and kindness.

Jungkook stood on the edge of the playground, unsure of what to do. He had never been good at making friends, and the sight of the other children laughing and playing made him feel even more out of place. But then, as if sensing his presence, Jimin looked up and met Jungkook's gaze. For a moment, time seemed to stand still. And then, with a smile that could melt the coldest of hearts, Jimin ran over to Jungkook.

"Hi! I'm Jimin! Do you want to play with us?" Jimin's voice was bright and cheerful, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled up at Jungkook.

Jungkook hesitated for a moment, but there was something about Jimin's smile that made him feel safe, made him feel like he belonged. So, he nodded, and just like that, the two boys became inseparable.

As the years passed, Jungkook and Jimin's bond only grew stronger. They did everything together—climbing trees, exploring the woods, and spending lazy afternoons lying on the grass, staring up at the clouds. Jungkook found himself opening up to Jimin in a way he never had with anyone else. Jimin had a way of making Jungkook feel understood, even when he didn't have the words to express his feelings.

In school, they were always by each other's side. Jimin was popular, his sunny disposition making him well-liked by everyone. Jungkook, on the other hand, was more reserved, preferring to keep to himself. But Jimin never let him feel alone. He was always there, pulling Jungkook into conversations, making sure he was included in everything.

Their favorite spot was a small, hidden cove by the beach that they had discovered one summer. It was a place only they knew about, a place where they could be themselves without any worries. They spent countless hours there, talking about their dreams and fears, about what they wanted to be when they grew up. Jungkook would listen as Jimin talked about his dream of becoming a dancer, his eyes shining with excitement. And in turn, Jimin would listen as Jungkook talked about his love for drawing, about how he wanted to capture the world in his sketches.

It was during one of these afternoons, as they sat on the rocks overlooking the ocean, that Jungkook realized something had changed. As Jimin laughed at something Jungkook had said, his face lit up by the setting sun, Jungkook felt his heart skip a beat. It was a feeling he didn't quite understand, a warmth that spread through his chest and made him feel both excited and scared at the same time. It was in that moment that Jungkook realized his feelings for Jimin were more than just friendship.

But they were still just kids, and Jungkook didn't know how to deal with these new emotions. So, he kept them to himself, afraid of ruining the most important relationship in his life.

As they entered their teenage years, life began to change. They were no longer just two boys playing by the beach; they were young men, each with their own hopes, dreams, and struggles. Jimin's passion for dance grew stronger, and he started taking lessons at a dance academy in the city. Jungkook, on the other hand, found himself drawn more and more to art. He spent hours sketching, his drawings becoming more detailed and complex.

But with these changes came new challenges. Jimin's time became more divided, his dance lessons and rehearsals taking up most of his days. Jungkook understood—he knew how important dance was to Jimin—but he couldn't help the pang of loneliness he felt as they spent less time together.

One evening, after a particularly long day at school, Jungkook decided to visit the cove by himself. He sat on the rocks, sketchbook in hand, trying to capture the way the waves crashed against the shore. But his thoughts kept drifting back to Jimin. He missed their easy conversations, the way Jimin's laughter would echo in the cove. He missed the way Jimin would always be there, by his side.

As the sun began to set, Jungkook heard footsteps behind him. He turned to see Jimin, slightly out of breath, a smile on his face. "Sorry I'm late," Jimin said, sitting down next to Jungkook. "Practice ran longer than I expected."

"It's okay," Jungkook replied, but his voice was quieter than usual.

Jimin noticed the change in Jungkook's demeanor and frowned. "Kookie, is something wrong?"

Jungkook hesitated, his fingers gripping his sketchbook tightly. He wanted to tell Jimin how he felt, how much he missed him, but the words wouldn't come out. Instead, he shook his head. "No, everything's fine."

But Jimin wasn't convinced. He reached out, placing a hand on Jungkook's shoulder. "You know you can talk to me, right? About anything."

Jungkook looked into Jimin's eyes, the concern and care in them almost too much to bear. He wanted to tell Jimin everything, about the feelings that had been growing inside him for years, about the fear of losing him. But instead, he just nodded, forcing a smile. "I know, Jiminie."

Jimin's smile returned, and he leaned his head on Jungkook's shoulder. "Good. Because we're best friends, and nothing's going to change that."

But as Jungkook looked out at the ocean, he couldn't help but wonder if things were already changing.

High school brought with it even more changes. Jimin's dance career was starting to take off, and he was getting offers to perform in bigger cities. Jungkook, too, was getting recognition for his art, his sketches winning competitions and getting featured in local galleries. They were both on the path to achieving their dreams, but it also meant that they were spending even less time together.

One evening, as they sat in the cove, Jimin excitedly told Jungkook about an offer he had received to join a prestigious dance academy in Seoul. "It's an amazing opportunity, Kookie," Jimin said, his eyes shining with excitement. "But it means I'll have to move to Seoul for a few years."

Jungkook's heart sank at the thought of Jimin leaving, but he forced himself to smile. "That's great, Jiminie. You should go for it."

Jimin looked at Jungkook, sensing the hesitation in his voice. "Are you sure you're okay with it?"

Jungkook nodded, but the lump in his throat made it hard to speak. He wanted to be happy for Jimin, but the thought of being without him was too painful. "Yeah, I'm fine. You should follow your dreams."

Jimin smiled, but there was a hint of sadness in his eyes. "I'll miss you, Kookie."

"I'll miss you too," Jungkook replied, his voice barely above a whisper.

As they sat in silence, the reality of the situation began to sink in. They had always been together, through everything, and now they were about to be separated by distance and time. Jungkook's mind raced as he tried to figure out how to tell Jimin how he really felt. He had kept his feelings hidden for so long, afraid of ruining their friendship, but now he realized that if he didn't say something, he might never get the chance.

Taking a deep breath, Jungkook turned to Jimin. "Jimin, there's something I need to tell you."

Jimin looked at him, his expression serious. "What is it, Kookie?"

Jungkook's heart pounded in his chest as he struggled to find the right words. "I... I've been in love with you for a long time, Jimin. I didn't want to say anything because I was afraid it would ruin our friendship, but I can't keep it to myself anymore."

Jimin’s eyes widened in surprise, the words hanging in the air between them. For a moment, the only sound was the gentle crashing of the waves against the shore. Jungkook’s heart raced, every second feeling like an eternity as he waited for Jimin to say something—anything.

Finally, Jimin spoke, his voice soft. “Kookie… you’re in love with me?”

Jungkook nodded, unable to meet Jimin’s eyes. “I’ve been in love with you for as long as I can remember. I just didn’t want to lose you, Jimin. You’re my best friend, and I couldn’t risk ruining that.”

Jimin was silent for a moment, his mind racing as he tried to process what Jungkook had just confessed. He thought back to all the moments they had shared, the way Jungkook would sometimes look at him with an expression he couldn’t quite place, the way Jungkook had always been there for him, no matter what. It was all starting to make sense now.

“Kookie,” Jimin finally said, his voice trembling slightly, “I had no idea you felt this way. I mean, I’ve always known we were close, but… I never realized…”

Jungkook swallowed hard, feeling his heart sink. This was exactly what he had feared—Jimin didn’t feel the same way, and now everything would be awkward between them. He could already feel the distance growing, the chasm opening up between them.

“It’s okay,” Jungkook said quickly, his voice breaking as he tried to put on a brave face. “You don’t have to say anything. I just… I just wanted you to know before you left.”

Jimin shook his head, his heart aching at the sight of Jungkook trying so hard to hold it together. “No, Kookie, it’s not that I don’t care about you. I do. It’s just… this is a lot to take in.”

Jungkook nodded, looking away as he felt the tears prickling at the corners of his eyes. “I understand. I’m sorry for making things complicated.”

But before he could say anything more, he felt Jimin’s hand on his cheek, gently turning his face so they were looking into each other’s eyes. Jimin’s gaze was soft, full of warmth and something else—something that made Jungkook’s breath catch in his throat.

“You don’t need to apologize, Jungkook,” Jimin said softly, his thumb brushing away the tear that had escaped down Jungkook’s cheek. “I’m just surprised, that’s all. But… the truth is, I’ve always felt something special between us too. I just didn’t realize it was love. At least, not until now.”

Jungkook blinked, hardly daring to believe what he was hearing. “Jimin… are you saying…?”

Jimin nodded, a small, shy smile tugging at his lips. “Yeah, Kookie. I think I love you too.”

The relief that washed over Jungkook was overwhelming, and before he could stop himself, he pulled Jimin into a tight embrace. Jimin laughed softly, wrapping his arms around Jungkook in return, resting his head on his shoulder.

“I was so scared,” Jungkook admitted, his voice muffled by Jimin’s hair. “I thought I’d lose you if I told you.”

“You’ll never lose me,” Jimin whispered back. “No matter what, we’ll always be together. I promise.”

They stayed like that for a long time, holding each other as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange. In that moment, it didn’t matter that they were about to be separated by distance. What mattered was that they had each other, and they had finally found the courage to speak the truth that had been in their hearts all along.

The day Jimin was to leave for Seoul arrived sooner than either of them would have liked. The train station was bustling with activity, but to Jungkook, it all seemed distant, like a muted backdrop to the most important moment of his life. Jimin stood beside him, suitcase in hand, his expression a mix of excitement and sadness.

“This isn’t goodbye forever,” Jimin said, trying to keep his voice light, though his heart was heavy. “We’ll call and text every day. And I’ll visit whenever I can.”

Jungkook nodded, but the knot in his throat made it hard to speak. “I know. But it’s going to be hard not having you here.”

“I’ll miss you too, Kookie,” Jimin whispered, his voice trembling slightly. “More than you know.”

Jungkook couldn’t hold back any longer. He reached out, pulling Jimin into a tight hug, holding him as if he could somehow keep him from leaving. Jimin clung to him just as tightly, neither of them wanting to let go.

“You’ll be amazing in Seoul,” Jungkook said, his voice thick with emotion. “You’re going to achieve all your dreams, Jiminie. I just know it.”

Jimin pulled back slightly, looking into Jungkook’s eyes. “And so will you, Kookie. You’re going to do great things with your art. I believe in you.”

The train’s whistle blew, signaling that it was time for Jimin to board. With one last, lingering look, Jimin pressed a soft kiss to Jungkook’s lips—a promise that no matter how far apart they were, their love would remain strong.

“I’ll come back to you, Jungkook,” Jimin whispered against his lips. “I promise.”

And with that, Jimin turned and boarded the train, leaving Jungkook standing on the platform, watching as the train pulled away, taking with it a piece of his heart.

The years passed, and though they were separated by distance, Jimin and Jungkook kept their promise to each other. They stayed in constant contact, their calls and messages a lifeline that kept their bond strong. Jungkook poured himself into his art, his work gaining recognition and success beyond his wildest dreams. Jimin, too, excelled in Seoul, his talent as a dancer earning him a place among the best in the country.

But no matter how much time passed, they never forgot about their promise to be together again. And so, after three long years, Jimin returned to Busan, just as he had promised.

Jungkook stood at the train station, his heart racing as he waited for Jimin’s train to arrive. He had imagined this moment so many times in his mind, but now that it was finally here, he felt a mix of excitement and nervousness.

When the train finally pulled into the station, Jungkook’s breath caught in his throat as he saw Jimin step off the train. He looked different—more mature, more confident—but his smile was the same, bright and full of warmth.

As soon as their eyes met, everything else faded away. Jimin dropped his suitcase and ran towards Jungkook, his smile widening with every step. Jungkook met him halfway, pulling him into his arms and lifting him off the ground in a tight embrace.

“You’re back,” Jungkook whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

“I’m back,” Jimin replied, his voice trembling as he clung to Jungkook. “And I’m never leaving again.”

Jungkook pulled back just enough to look into Jimin’s eyes, his own filled with love and adoration. “I’ve missed you so much, Jiminie.”

“I’ve missed you too, Kookie,” Jimin whispered, tears filling his eyes. “But we’re together now, and that’s all that matters.”

Jungkook leaned in, capturing Jimin’s lips in a deep, loving kiss, one that spoke of all the years they had spent apart, all the love that had only grown stronger with time. As they stood there, holding each other, they knew that no matter what the future held, they would face it together, just as they always had.

Years later, as they sat together in their small house by the beach, Jungkook and Jimin would often look back on their journey with a smile. They had been through so much together—distance, heartache, and the struggles of chasing their dreams—but through it all, their love had remained constant.

Their favorite place was still the cove, where they had shared so many of their hopes and dreams as children. It was where they would go to talk, to laugh, and sometimes, just to be with each other in silence, the waves crashing gently against the shore.

One evening, as the sun set over the ocean, casting a warm glow over the water, Jungkook took Jimin’s hand in his, their fingers intertwining naturally. They sat in comfortable silence, the years of shared memories filling the space between them.

“Remember when we were kids, and we used to sit here and talk about what we wanted to be when we grew up?” Jimin asked, his voice soft with nostalgia.

Jungkook smiled, squeezing Jimin’s hand. “Yeah, I remember. And look at us now—we made those dreams come true.”

Jimin leaned his head on Jungkook’s shoulder, a content smile on his lips. “We did. But the best part is that we did it together.”

Jungkook pressed a kiss to the top of Jimin’s head, his heart swelling with love for the boy he had fallen in love with all those years ago. “I love you, Jimin. More than anything in this world.”

Jungkook pressed a kiss to the top of Jimin’s head, his heart swelling with love for the boy he had fallen in love with all those years ago. “I love you, Jimin. More than anything in this world.”

Jimin smiled, a warm glow spreading through him as he snuggled closer to Jungkook. “I love you too, Kookie. I always have, and I always will.”

They sat together, watching the waves as the sky slowly darkened, the stars beginning to peek out one by one. The sound of the ocean was a soothing lullaby, a reminder of all the moments they had shared here, from childhood to now. This cove had been the witness to their most cherished memories—secrets whispered in the dark, dreams shared under the stars, and the realization that what they had was something rare and precious.

As the first star appeared in the sky, Jimin tilted his head up to look at Jungkook, his eyes shining with love and contentment. “You know, I think our younger selves would be pretty proud of us. We’ve come a long way, haven’t we?”

Jungkook nodded, a smile tugging at his lips. “Yeah, we have. But I think they’d be even prouder to know that through it all, we never let go of each other.”

Jimin’s smile softened, and he reached up to gently cup Jungkook’s cheek. “That’s because you’ve always been my home, Kookie. No matter where life takes us, as long as I’m with you, I’m home.”

Jungkook’s heart swelled with emotion, and he leaned down to capture Jimin’s lips in a tender kiss, one filled with all the love he had for the man who had been by his side through it all. When they finally pulled away, they rested their foreheads together, their breaths mingling in the cool evening air.

“As long as we’re together,” Jungkook murmured, his voice soft but filled with conviction, “I know we can face anything.”

Jimin nodded, his heart full of love and certainty. “Always.”

They sat there in the quiet, content just to be in each other’s presence. The world around them might change, but the love they had found in each other was timeless, unshakable. It had withstood the tests of time and distance, and it would continue to guide them through whatever lay ahead.

And so, as the waves continued to crash gently against the shore, Jungkook and Jimin held each other close, knowing that no matter where life took them, they would always have each other. Their love was the kind that was written in the stars, destined to last forever.
