Tempted by her Daddies: Chapter 4
Tempted by her Daddies (Harem of Daddies Book 6)
âAlexei, you should eat more. You need lots of fuel. You too, Roman, youâre looking pale.â
Salem sighed as his mother fussed over his friends. They lapped it up and Alexei sent him a smug grin.
Bastard.
âYou going to eat that bread roll?â David asked Salem, snatching it off his plate before he could answer.
Salem sighed.
âDavid!â Charlene snapped. âSalem might have wanted that.â
âToo late,â he told her.
âSorry, Salem. He has no manners,â Charlene told him.
âNeither does this one,â Erica added, point at his brother, Con.
âHeywhatdidIdo?â Con asked, his mouth stuffed full.
âSwallow before you speak!â their mother snapped. âWhat will Alexei and Roman think of your terrible manners?â
Please let this end now.
As soon as the meal finished, Salem pushed his chair back. âWe should go.â
âBut you canât go yet. Alina is calling soon,â his mother said.
âShe is? Iâm sure she doesnât need us all here. Itâs you she wants to talk to.â
âActually, she requested that we all be here,â his father said.
Which meant that he was staying.
Heâd never deny his sister something if he could give it to her.
They all gathered around his fatherâs ancient laptop as the call came in. Heâd offered so many times to buy him a new laptop. But his father wouldnât hear of it.
âHi everyone!â Alinaâs happy face appeared on the screen.
He loved that his sister was so happy now. That sheâd found love with men who adored her.
âHow are you?â he asked her.
âIâm so good. Look!â She waved her left hand in the air.
His mum, Erica, and Charlene let out cries of excitement.
âIâm engaged.â
All of her men appeared behind her, looking pleased with themselves.
âThat is wonderful!â his mother said after everyone congratulated Alina. âWhere do you want me to book for the ceremony? When do you want to get married? Next summer? You will have to fly over so we can go dress shopping.â
There was silence and Alinaâs face dropped. âUm, Mum, we were actually thinking of getting married in three months.â
âThree months!â her mother exclaimed.
âWe donât want to wait any longer,â Trin said.
âOh, thatâs so romantic,â Erica said dreamily.
âI donât know where we can find somewhere to hold the wedding at such short notice,â his mum said. âAlthough thatâs the start of summer, so maybe a garden wedding?â
He had a feeling where this was going.
Alina looked at her men then back at them. âActually, mum, we were planning to get married here. In Escana.â
Silence ensued and his mother grew pale.
âIn Escana?â
âYes.â
âDo not worry about getting here,â Derik said. âWeâll send our cousinsâ plane to get you all.â
âAnd you will stay at the palace,â Jonan added.
Wow.
That was so generous.
âThatâs amazing!â Charlene said.
Erica, Con and David all joined in with their thanks.
But his father and mother were silent.
âWe canât come to Escana,â his mother said before she abruptly left the room.
Alinaâs face fell.
âI will talk to your mother,â his dad said. âWe are very happy for you all. Really.â He left the room as well.
Poor Alina.
When sheâd called, sheâd been so happy and now she looked defeated and sad.
âI will talk to them, honey,â he told her. âDonât worry. This is a really special time for you and your day will be spectacular.â
Alina smiled. âThanks, Salem. Alexei and Roman, you guys are invited too, of course. Youâre family now.â
Wonderful.
Salem walked toward the meeting room. Alexei and Roman were with him.
As they passed through an open office area, he caught sight of a television on the wall, broadcasting the news from Dublin.
âShit. Another shooting incident,â Alexei said, coming to a stop beside him.
The reporter was talking about the growing unrest in Ireland and then it switched over to where Patrick OâConnor was being interviewed by a different reporter.
âHeâs going to use this to his advantage,â Salem said quietly.
âThink heâll become the next Prime Minister?â Roman asked.
âHe will if he keeps going like this,â he replied. âHeâs promising to clean up crime and he has the sympathy vote since his wife died after an armed robbery several years ago.â
âDid you know that he and Riordan are related?â Roman said.
âWhat? Really?â Shock filled him. âHow?â
âTheyâre half-brothers. Different mothers. I think Riordan uses his motherâs last name. Thereâs about ten years between them. Iâve never heard him say anything about him. They might be estranged.â
Hmm. It was interesting, though.
âIâve just seen someone I need to talk to,â Alexei said. âGo on without me.â
âWe canât be late,â he told the other man.
He just waved his hand and moved off.
Not a great start.
They walked into the meeting room. The rest of the team was already there, and all talk stopped as soon as he entered.
Fuck.
Heâd led this team for the last three years as theyâd tried to infiltrate Pinkyâs circle to take him down.
And he had a feeling that meant nothing to most of them if they could instead gain the favor of the man standing at the front of the room.
Riordan Orr.
He was the darling of MI6. The guy they brought in to troubleshoot problem areas and get shit done.
Under other circumstances, Salem would have loved to work with him. But not when heâd been brought in to troubleshoot Salem.
âPlease, take a seat,â Riordan said. He had a faint Irish accent.
Roman sat and Salem nodded, sitting next to him.
Alexei strolled in.
âGlad you could join us,â Riordan said sarcastically.
âYouâre welcome. I know I always make your day brighter.â Alexei grinned, but the amusement didnât reach his eyes.
âIâm sure you understand why youâre all here.â
âBecause we canât catch that bastard, Pinky,â Mark said. He hadnât been on the team as long as the others, so Salem figured he thought he was safe from censure.
âI wouldnât use profanity, but yes,â Riordan said stiffly.
âWe were so close,â Genevieve said mournfully, from where she sat across the table.
The others nodded.
âWhat are your next steps?â Riordan asked.
Salem explained them. And then Riordan took them apart bit by bit.
It was fucking humiliating.
âHe tried to get a hold in Escana by using one of the Kingâs nephews,â Riordan said. âCan we explore that angle?â
âHow?â Alexei asked tightly. âBy using someone as bait?â
There was silence.
Oh. That fucker was thinking of doing that?
âThey will never agree to it,â Salem told him.
âPerhaps we can figure out a way to give him an opening. Someone could pretend to want to work with him, and lure him out into the open,â Riordan said to Salem. âYou have ties to Escana and the royal family.â
âI wonât use it.â
âThen I think your usefulness on this team is coming to an end.â
He clenched his teeth together. âI am going to my sisterâs wedding in a few months. I can speak to them then.â
âItâs too long to wait.â
He and Riordan locked stares. But neither backed down.
âKeep working on other angles. Speak to them before you leave for the wedding. Feel them out,â Riordan bossed as he left the room.
Genevieve let out a shaky breath as she stood. âWell, anyone else need a drink, now?â
Salem needed the whole top shelf.
