"Here is your contract Mr. Khan," I say sliding the file towards him,
He signs the contract and passes it to his co-founder, Ms. Eman Abru, or you could say she-devil.
"Just because my friend over here has agreed, I am accepting to sign this contract mr. siddque, or you know I didn't had much of a heart in this project." She smiles pointedly looking at contract,
"Eman," Mahib khan calls out, "Why don't we just sign it?"
She gives him a pointed look before signing on the contract, and gives it back to me,
"Thank you Mr. Khan and Ms. Abru, my team will contact with you shortly and then we can start our project as we planned," I say checking out the file and closing it, and get up from my seat,
"It was a pleasure to meet you Mr. Siddque," Mahib khan says getting up from his seat and shakes my hand,
"Same here," I reply, "I hope our project goes well."
"Inshallah," he says, "We are hosting our company's twenty years anniversary this weekend, I hope you can attend it."
I shake my head, "Congratulations on that, but I am travelling to Ankara tomorrow and I don't think I will be back to Istanbul so soon."
"It's alright, no worries." He smiles and looks his partner who just stood there without saying anything,
"The eagerness in your tone, I bet you are going back to your wife." Eman grins,
I nod, "You are right Ms. Abru." Mahib gives Eman a look to which she shrugs, "I should get going now, have a good day."
I exit there office, and go back down by elevator to the parking cellar, finding my car, I open it and keep the files on the back seat before driving off from the K group of designs office building,
While driving, I check for any missed calls from my wife to find none, I know I am behaving like a teenager but could you blame me?
Twenty minutes in, I reach my parents house and park my car in the garage before going inside the house, I see my mom seated alone in the living room and walk towards her,
"Salam mama," I greet her, she smiles seeing me and kisses on top of my head when I sit beside her,
"How was work?" She asks,
"Good Alhumdulliah," I reply leaning my head back on the couch, "What?" I ask I see her smiling at me,
"Nothing," she says, "Just really happy to see my son, is it not an excuse enough for a mother?"
I chuckle giving her knuckle a kiss, "You can always stay happy mama."
"How is Ayesha?" She asks,
"Good," I reply, "It was her last exam today, so she went out with her friend."
"I can see someone is excited to go tomorrow, huh?" She says pinching my cheeks,
"Mama," I chuckle, "Since when did you start teasing me? You were on my side."
She laughs patting my cheek, "I was kidding," she taps my shoulder, "Go fresh and up, lunch will be ready in a while,"
"Alright," I say giving her head a kiss before getting up and going to my room to change my clothes,
Before entering my room, my eyes caught the eye of the locked room in the corner, which we haven't opened it till now,
Shaking my head, I enter inside my room and take my cloths off, and look in my wardrobe for something to wear, after changing my clothes, I picked up my files and opened my suitcase to keep them in, so that I couldn't forget it.
I move aside the last formal set of my clothes and frown seeing a small rectangular wooden box below, placing the files safely in the compartment, I picked up the box and take it out of the suitcase,
Before I could open it, I heard my mom calling for lunch, deciding to open it later, I place it on the study table and walked out of my room.
While I was descending down the stairs, I take out my phone from my pocket and grin at the message notification from my wife, which she send me fifteen minutes ago,
She sent me a picture of her from the fair she went, I stare at the picture with a smile, she stood there with a beautiful smile on her face, her one hand on her hijab and one hand holding her flowey dress, she loves. Her presence was enough to dim the large jug fountain filled with flowers behind her.
She wrote below,
In case, you forget your wife. â¡ ~ Wife.
Could never forget her. ~ Me.
Seeing the low battery notification, I plug my phone to Mina's charger in the living room and walk towards dining room,
"Salam baba," I greet my dad who sat on the chair of dining table,
"Walaikumaslam my son." He replies fondly and gestures me to sit beside him,
Mama walks in from the kitchen with a large bowl of butter chicken and serves it to us before calling for Mina,
Mina sprints in and takes her seat before mama could yell at her again,
"Wow so delicious," Mina hums taking a bite, "See baba, mama only makes delicious food for her son."
"Of course my dear," mama smiles mockingly, "I feed you both rocks everyday right?"
"Absolutely not ayeeza," baba denies, "We love the rocks too."
"I see how you both don't stop troubling my mother, have you ever thought why she only makes good food for me? Think about it." I smirk and Mina pokes her tongue out.
"Alright stop," mama chuckles, "Eat quietly."
"This table looks incomplete without Ayesha right?" Baba says smiling, "And as much I hate to say, I kind of even miss Saso- mom."
"You are right baba." Mina agrees, "In no time how bhabhi became a main part of our family and how she takes cares of us, she is one in a million, right?"
"Absolutely not, my daughter in law couldn't be counted in millions, she is one in this whole world." Mama says and I chuckle.
In no time how my wife has won hearts of my family, could she be any more ideal.
We all engross in an easy conversation until mina frowns checking her phone, "Bhai have you watched the news?"
"Why what's wrong?" I ask taking the last bite of rice.
"Apparently there has been bombing threats in Istanbul, so the authorities have closed all airports and roads." Mina says worriedly.
I frown, "What are you saying, I have a flight tomorrow."
Mina gasps scrolling on her phone, "There was a bomb blast in Ankara."
"What?" Mama gasps,
I hastily get up from my chair and walk towards the living room to get my phone off charger,
My heart fell dangerously when I see numerous calls and message notifications on my phone.
"Mina put on the news channel." I heard baba say as I dial Ayesha's phone, which kept saying it was switched off,
Mortified, I kept dialling her number until I heard the news playing behind me,
"We have a news coming in just from Ankara, where an deadly suicide bombing took place at the Bursa ground where an annual spring festival was being held, it is reportedly said by the authorities that nearly twenty people died and forty five casualties were reported..."
I opened Ayesha's messages and look at the text she send me which was exactly the location shown in news.
I open her photo she send me and look at her smiling face then at the news shown in the news, which showed ambulance picking up bodies from near the flower jug, which was now destroyed.
I couldn't feel my legs, I couldn't feel my breaths, I couldn't hear anything, the only thing I see is her smiling face and the images displayed on the news.
"Bhai what's wrong?" I heard Mina, but I didn't knew what's wrong.
"Farhan did you talked to Ayesha?" Mama asks, but I didn't knew how to talk.
"She is okay, right?" Baba asks, but I didn't if she was alright.
I felt my hold on my phone loosening, my eyes on the images shown on the television,
I heard Mina gasp, "No..no the time, time." She whispers terrified,
"Mina what's going on?" Baba demands,
Mina cries, "The photo bhabhi send," she whispers, "She send it two minutes before the blast and....and,"
"And what?" Mama asks desperately,
"And she was there on the spot....where..where the blast took place," Mina cries holding my arm,
I could hear my mother crying, my father desperately making calls and my sister asking me is she's going to be okay,
All I could hear was her laugh, her smile, the one she smiled in the photo, the one she gives me in mornings, in nights, when I feel low, every time. The way her face lit up when I come home, the way she talks, the way she understands me, the way she exists..
"Promise me you will come back to me."
Her voice filtered in my mind, I look at the images displayed on the tv screen, and the words registered in my mind.
She asked me to come back to her.
How could I leave her alone?
The ringing in my ears decreased and my surroundings became clear, I snap out of my thoughts and look at my mom and sister crying looking at the news, I walk towards them and snatch my phone from Mina.
"Nothing happened to her." I say determinedly, "I will bring her back."
I walk out of the house, picking my car keys, my phone rings in my hand and I pick it,
"Farhan, did you heard about the blastsâ" I cut Bilal off,
"Ayesha was in that fair, do something, find her and find me any ticket." I say opening the car door and driving from the gates.
Bilal's voice says through the connected Bluetooth, "I am in Istanbul right now, There is no tickets available until day after tomorrow, I will try pulling some strings and also do something for Ayesha, don't worry brother."
As soon he hung up, I dial Murat's number and he answers in a frantic voice, "FarhanâAyesha,"
"I heard," I say, speeding up my car, "Did you try contacting her friend who she went with?"
"I did," he says, "She's out of reach, I contacted her family and they are worried too, mom fainted hearing the news, we are taking her to the hospital."
"What? Alright take care, call me if you get any information." I cut his call and try calling Dorok's number, which he didn't pick up.
I dialled Yousuf's number and he picked up on first ring, "FB, Bilal informed me, I am here on the premises with Hasnain, we are looking for bhabhi, don't worry."
"Yousuf she wore a brown colour dress and she had a black bag with her, I am sending you her photo if you find someone similar to it, inform me. And give phone to Nain," I say honking at the cars and drive past the signals.
"Farhan," Hasnain says.
"Nain, where is D? He is not fucking picking up my calls." I say frustratedly.
"I will try contacting him. Don't worry." He says cutting the call.
I punch the steering wheel frustratedly, and pull over my car at the freeway.
What is happening, where are you Ayesha?
My vision blurred and I blink away quickly looking at the road ahead,
Where should I go? How can I find her?
I am not ready to relish this pain again, I don't want to. Not with her.
I already survived my brother's pain, I won't be able to handle hers. I'll die this time.
I take a deep breath as my phone rang, I picked up Mina's call, "Bhai where are you?"
"Give it to me," mama says, "Farhan my love come back beta, we will do something about it, your baba is trying his best for the tickets, but going out like that in tension is not the best solution beta. Don't do this, please don't make us worry about you."
I sigh tiredly, is she might've been here she would definitely say to be calm and try to think coolly. I take a breath before saying,
"Alright I am coming back." I say turning the car on and drive ahead to take the u-turn.
I drive back to my parents house and walk inside the living room to find my family waiting for me,
"Bhai, Hajra is on line," Mina says giving me the landline,
"Hello Farhan?" Hajra says, "Bilal told me, I tried booking tickets from my cousin and the latest I got was for tomorrow night, there is tight security it is impossible to get ticket today, but I'll try and let you know, alright?"
"Alright." I say shortly.
"Don't worry we will find Ayesha." She says determinedly, "Bilal flew to Istanbul last night, I asked him to be with you, I am going to Ayesha's house right now."
I nod wordlessly, "Thank you Hajra."
"What did she said?" Mama asks eagerly,
"There are no tickets for today, even if I go by road, all the ways are closed. There is no chance for today." I reply holding my head in my hand.
"I tried calling hira but she didn't pick up." Mama says worriedly.
"She passed out hearing the news, I talked to Murat." I reply in a monotonous voice.
"Ya Allah," mama cries, "What happened all of a sudden? We were just so happy, what went wrong?"
"Everything will be alright, mama. We won't let anything happen to bhabhi," Mina says determinedly, "This time, we won't lose another member of our family."
We all look at Mina, stunned by her words.
"Am I wrong?" Mina asks and baba shakes his head,
"You are not." I agree, "We won't let it happen again."
Mina smiles determinedly, "I called Fanaa baji, said about the accident and she said the victims are brought in her hospital, she will give us updates."
Mama smiles looking at Mina, "I am really proud of you to handle everything like this."
The door bell rang and Mina went to open it, I stood up when I see Bilal walking in,
"Farhan," Bilal says walking inside, he greeted my parents and look back at me, "I tried contacting the mayor's son, he said he could only clear the roads till tomorrow evening."
I look down defeatedly, "What am I going to do?"
"Don't worry, I have let our people know over there, they all are looking for her." Bilal assures, his phone buzzes with a notification, "It's Yousuf, says they have released the names of the people in the attack, we need a laptop."
"In my study, over there." Baba says pointing at his study and we both quickly walk towards it,
I opened baba's laptop, and opened the site Yousuf send, I check all the lists of the casualties and didn't found her name.
My heart fell dangerously when I saw the name of the list below,
Dead victims
"I don't want to look in it." I whisper, my hands shaking on the keyboard.
"Farhan," Bilal calls out, "We need to." He says with difficulty.
"I can't do it." I say getting up from the chair, "Check it for me."
I wait for Bilal to check and my head started spinning when I heard him call my name,
"What?" I ask dreadfully.
"Her name is not here too." He says unsurely and I breath in a biggest sigh of relief,
"But," Bilal frowns, "If her name is not on both the lists, then where is she? What happened to her?"
"Did you check her friend's name too?" I ask nearing him, "Her name was Sakina, I can't remember her last name."
"Hold on," Bilal says and checks on both the lists, "No, no Sakina too."
I frown moving back, if not then where did she went?
"Are you sure she went on that fair?" Bilal asks,
"Yes I am. She texted me the name and she send me her photo which was the exact location of the blast, things aren't adding up." I mumble walking around.
There was a knock on the door and Mina walks in, holding my phone, "There's a call for you."
I take the phone from her and answer it, putting it on the speaker, "Yousuf?"
"FB," he starts hesitantly, "I-I um came to the victim camp, and-and.."
"And what?" I urge,
"And.." he takes a shaky breath, "There is a-a woman with the same black purse in the photo you send me.."
"Is it Ayesha?" I ask, my hearts beating dangerously.
"I don't know.." Yousuf says, "They are not letting me near her, she has the exact bag on her shoulder."
"What about the dress? The other things, does it matches with bhabhi?" Mina asks,
"No.. I can't see it," Yousuf's voice was uncertain.
"What's the matter?" I ask urgently.
"The thing is, the lady's face and clothes can't be recognised...because she is burned out," he says,
Mina gasps, and Bilal walks towards me,
"And she was just pronounced dead."
The phone slipped from my hand, and this time no one dared to pick it up,
"Wait wait," Bilal picks up my phone, "Yousuf we just checked the list, her name was not there."
"They are the unidentified bodies, Bilal." Yousuf says quietly, "They are not letting me near her, family is required, I have contacted with bhabhi's brother, he is on his way to recognise the body."
"Ouch." Ayesha hisses holding her hand,
"What's wrong?" I ask, pausing to chop carrots.
"Burned my finger." She says closing the oven door.
I walk near her and inspect her hand in my mine, taking an ointment from the first aid box, I take some and apply it on her hand.
"You need to be careful," I blew on her wound, "These burns are no joke." I say seriously.
She chuckles as I close the ointment tube, "I am used to it," she says watching me wash my hands.
"Well," I say walking towards the pot on the stove, "On my watch, you are not going to get hurt."
Ayesha laughs, walking behind me and wraps her arms around my torso, hugging me from behind, "My caring husband." She kisses my shoulder. "I would die without you."
I turn around and glare at her, "Why do you have to say that?"
She pouts, "I am sorry, please forgive me?"
I smile, giving her a quick peck, "How could I deny that face?"
"Farhan?"
"Bhai?" I snap out my thoughts, when I noticed water splashing on my face.
Confused, I look around to see that I was seated on a chair, and a concerned Bilal and Mina in front of me.
My eyes went on the phone, laying down on the carpeted floor and then it hit me.
"You weren't responding." Mina says watching me get up from the chair.
"This is not happening." I mumble walking around, "This is not happening, right?"
"It couldn't be her," Mina defends, "They said it was unidentified, right? It is not necessary to be her."
"Yes, it could be." Bilal says, "There could a same bag."
"But what if it's her?" I mutter dreadfully.
"Bhai don't think like that," Mina says, "let's hope for the best."
"Hope?" I mumble distastefully,
"Yes, Mina is right, let's not think of it, I will try pulling some strings in few of the hospitals and let them know about Ayesha, alright?" Bilal says taking out his phone, "Mina take your brother to his room, let's keep him away with it for a while."
I can hear them, I could hear remember Mina telling me to go to my room, when we step out of the study, I also heard the gasp of my parents when Mina told them,
I can hear every single beat of my heart, every single breath vibrating in my chest, but my mind doesn't go away from everything, from her.
When what I could always think of is her, then how am I supposed to take it of her?
My eyes go on the small wooden box by the table, and by some new force in me, I walk towards it, and open it.
I frown looking at the folded papers in there, I opened the bottom paper,
Dear future husband,
I paused. This is Ayesha's handwriting.
My heart started beating, looking at the living proofs of her.
I don't know who you might be, or when will I meet you, but let me tell you, I am fourteen today, and I had this idea of writing you a letter every year on my birthday, till we meet.
How does that sound? Romantic right? I can't wait to experience the love which all the dramas and books shows.
I hope you will be the best book for me.
Your future wife.
I smiled folding the letter back, there were total eight of them, and I read all of them, reading her feelings, reading how she would love, how she would want to be loved. She wrote about her days and I read all of it, imagining her voice talking to me.
I folded the second last letter and gulped, realising how much I want her in my life, and how everything seems baseless without her.
My eyes started to burn, when I picked up the last letter, I was about to open it when my phone rang.
My heart dropped seeing Murat's name on it.
Placing the letter down, I quickly got my phone.
"Farhan." Murat says frantically,
"What is it?" I ask immediately, my head started spinning.
"It wasn't her." He says, I could hear the relief in his voice, "That wasn't my sister, she was a forty year old woman, it was not Ayesha, she might be safe."
I sat back on the bed, breathing in the biggest sigh of relief.
It wasn't her.
She is alive.
"Alhumdulliah." I mutter, feeling a stone getting off my chest.
"That was so scary." Murat sighs, "I hope no one experience that."
"You are right." I say glancing at the box of letters, "How is mami?"
"Conscious, but not better." He replies, "I have filed a missing report for ayesha and her friend, if we don't find them in twenty four hours, the police will get involved."
"That's good." I pause, "Where is she then? If she's not any camp, any hospital?"
"Hajra your friend, visited us she said she could help with finding in hospitals and Fanaa baji said she could too, let's pray she's just safe, wherever she is."
"You are right." I sigh, "Alright, call me for any updates."
I sigh, closing the box with a last unread letter with it, I don't I could handle it, it's been dreadful enough already.
I lay down, taking my phone out, I opened her contact and read our previous chats.
Her last message was kind of ironic, and I hate it.
I stare at her picture and zoom in on her face, looking at the bright smile, those lively eyes.
If I get a chance to go in past, I would definitely not leave a chance to say how much I love her, every hour, every minute, every single second of the day.
"I will come back to you," I say looking at her face, "No matter what."
I wipe the corner of eye, hearing a knock on my door.
Mina opens the door and walks in with a tray of food in her hands,
"It's almost nine, dinner?" She asks placing the tray on the nightstand,
"No mina." I reply.
"Fine, atleast sit up." She grabs my hand and forces me to sit straighter.
"I don't want to eat." I say, looking at her grabbing the plate.
She looks at the plate and sighs, "Fine." She sits beside me, "Talk to me."
"About what?" I say looking at the dark sky from the windows, she really liked looking outside the moon.
"Anything." Mina replies, "Alright, I will start, remember the last time you both visited, bhabhi thought me how to bake brownies."
"She loves baking." I reply.
"I know," Mina chuckles, "She makes the best cheesecakes."
I faint smile touched my lips, "One day, while making one, she accidentally added salt instead of castor sugar."
"Really?" Mina chuckles, "Then what?"
I shook my head, "She told me to taste it, I did, didn't want to break her heart, so I ate all of it and had the worst food poisoning the next day."
"She must've been so guilty about it." Mina worries,
"Don't ask." I chuckle, "Almost cried in front of the doctor."
"She is just so pure hearted." Mina sighs,
"She is," I reply, "I've never seen a person with a kind heart like hers."
"You really love her don't you?"
I don't miss a beat, "I do." I gulp, "More than anything."
"What do you love the most about her?"
"Everything." I reply, "From the way she handles things to the way she understands me and my locked up emotions."
Mina pauses, "Why do you feel the need to lock your emotions?"
"Because I don't know how to express it, the next best thing, lock it in, so no one reaches thereâ"
"âAnd cause you a heartbreak?" I look at my sister, "You are afraid to let people in, you don't want to feel the pain when they leave."
I blink, realising I was chewing food, I look down at the empty plate on Mina's lap, and back at her smile.
"How did you?" I sputter,
Mina shrugs, "An expert trick." She keeps the plate back and passes a glass of water.
I drink it down, and keeps it back, she stands up grabbing my hand, "Let's get your fear out."
"What fear?" I ask as she drags me with her,
She pauses holding the door handle, "To experience a heartbreak. We both have been suppressing one since five years, why don't we relive it together?"
My heart thumped when she brought me in front of the room which have been locked for years.
Mina squeezes my hand, "What do you say?" Her voice breaks, "Do we remember our brother together?"
I blink my tears, nodding my head. She takes out the keys from her pocket and brings it near the lock, her hands shaking,
I grabbed her hands and help her unlock it, we both pause looking at the door, nodding at each other, we both push the door open.
Mina coughs as the dust flew across the room, reluctantly she steps in and I follow her,
As soon as I take a step in, everything started to hit me like a ton bricks, the memories, the talks, the person who used to live here,
Who is now gone, and the empty room was evidence of it.
"This is a little overwhelming." Mina sighs looking around the empty room.
"I feel like this is a dream, and Fahad bhai will walk in from his wardrobe and scold us for touching his things without his permission." Mina chuckles, wiping under her eyes.
"But I'd blame you." I say looking around the room, covered in dust and cobwebs.
Mina smiles walking towards the bed, there was a neatly folded shirt and dress pants folded on it, mina dusts of the dust from the shirt and picks it up,
"We were going to go Izmir the next day to finalise his wedding date." She says looking at the shirt, "Mama asked me to pick up a shirt for my brother, so I picked this one." She smiles looking at me, "I told mama my brother will look the most handsome in this and I can't wait to see him after school, only... I didn't got to see him after that."
She keeps the shirt back and wipes under her eyes, "I sometimes think if things would've been different if he didn't went that night."
"It wouldn't." I reply, "If he would've went the next day or next week, the end would be the same. His enemies were ready no matter the time, he..." I pause when I realise what I said.
"Because it was written this way?" Mina fills in, "You have understood the play of destiny, and as much it is painful to say, things had to be this way. And now you are learning to accept it."
I look at Mina, who was looking around the room with such an emotion which I was acquainted for years.
Grief. Guilt. Pain.
She didn't had that restlessness in her, because she accepted everything, she didn't kept hanging on it, but it pains her as it five years ago.
We both are grieving for our brother. All these years I had selfishly thought it was my only pain, because I wanted to take revenge, I knew my parents had each other, but I was alone.
But I forgot that even Mina was alone.
I walk towards my sister who looking down at the shirt of our brother and wrapped my arms around her.
She clutched my shirt and started sobbing.
Her hands were shivering, and I realise I was so late for this, he was our brother, we both faced a similar loss, but I selfishly went on my way and forgot about her.
And one hug. That's what it took her for breakdown.
The way she kept crying, the way she looked around the room, she needed this. She already lost her one brother and her other one just left her all alone.
"I am so sorry Mina." I whisper swallowing the gravel in my throat, "I am sorry I left you alone."
She says nothing and cries harder.
"I am sorry I couldn't play the role of your brother." My voice breaks, "You lost both of your brothers."
"Don't say that." Mina sobs. "You don't realise it but you mean a lot to me. And I will always love you no matter what."
"Why would you still love me?" I ask as a tear fell down my eye.
"Because you are my brother!" Mina snaps moving away, "We have a relation, a blood relation! And they don't end that way, you may have return years later but I would still love you, because bhai these relations don't break! The humans do, but the connection between the hearts won't. We lost our brother, but we still cry for him, his loss still pains us, why? Because we still love him and we would always wish for him to be in a better place than this world! Stop beating yourself for something that wasn't in your hand," she grabs my hands,
"Haven't we learn from this, relations, emotions matter with your loved ones, because they are the only ones who are going to be there for you, no matter what. No matter how many years later you return to them. Fahad bhai will not hold you accountable for his death, you accepted he is gone, start accepting your new life, you have so much in front of you. The grief will always be there, but you will learn to live with it, by remembering our brother with laugh, good memories, we would want cry, we will cry together, we would remember him for good, whatever we do we will always do it together."
I didn't realise there were tears on my face until mina wiped it with her hands.
"Unity is everything. This is what Fahad bhai wanted always. I don't remember him much, but you do. We will talk about him, share memories, cry remembering him, but never alone. You are in a difficult time, we all will find bhabhi, we all are with you. We didn't understood Fahad bhai, we didn't stood with him. But we will now. Always."
I grab her head and bring her into another hug.
"How did you got used to it?" I ask, "Because I am trying to and it's really overwhelming and scary."
"But we have to get out of it, don't we?" Mina says, "One step at a time."
I smile despite my tears. My little sister grew up so much, she understands everything and knows how to understand emotions.
"Thank you for this Mina." I say kissing on top of her head. "I may not always say this but I am really proud of the human you are becoming."
She smacks my arm moving away, "I knew I was always better than you."
I shake my head, smiling looking around the room, the walls doesn't haunt me, instead it reminds me of the person I was before.
How I used to live freely, express my emotions and overcome my fears.
My greatest fear was to unlock this room.
Because I was scared I was going to miss the person who ones this walls witnessed.
But looking at my brother, my wife, who always fight for peace, I came to realise that having peace, calmness in life is much more important than any revenge.
