Chapter 10- Surprisingly Sorry
Best Friends with the Player
Chapter 10- Surprisingly Sorry
Asher POV
My dad once told me that getting into fights with women will probably be one of the most challenging situations in my life. He's right. It's not like I purposely was looking for a fight with Kimmy, but I was angry and ticked off. I mean really? She's going on a date with Spencer what's-his-face! How can't I get angry over that? That shred of hope that one day Kimmy will realize I have feelings for her is ruined. If she's going on this date with Spencer, and another, and other, then when will she realize that I'm the one that wants to be with her.
It doesn't take a genius to notice that Kim is still angry with me. Giving me the silent treatment and avoid my look at all times. So after a semi long talk with Katie afterwards, I knew what I had to do. Even though I didn't like it much, and it was totally against everything I believed in and everything I told myself never to tell a girl, I knew I was going to have to apologize first. Just go with the flow, hide my anger, and suck it up. No matter how much it killed me.
So, here I am, after a long school day and a lengthy hard pep talk. Processing everything in my mind once again, I stood behind the closed door of Kim's bedroom listen to the laughs and giggles. My two quick knocks on the door made them stop completely. A few frantic whispers are shared until a blond chick opens the door; Katie.
"Oh, it's just Asher." Katie says nonchalantly. Wow, just Asher, like I'm no one important. Um, I'm sorry, who's known Kim longer?
"Oh, it's Kate." I respond to her back in a bleak tone; joking around obviously. Kate's pretty cool and I've got no problems with her. She sticks her tongue at me playfully, crossing her arms before turning back around to Kim.
"I think you should just stick to the original outfit." Katie tells Kim, who's slipping on her shirt when I walk over the threshold to her room.
"That's what I'm sticking with." Kim agrees, brushing her hair with her hands. She looks at me quickly with a worried look and then turns around. Kate looks over to me, biting her bottom lip dramatically and widening her eyes.
"So, I'll leave you guys alone. Give you two a moment to hash things out." Kate mutters uncomfortably, weaving her way around to exit Kim's room.
I stuff my hands in my pockets and sigh, watching Kim walk to her closet and walk back out. It took us both a few minutes until I decided to say something first, "So you're still going on that date, huh?" I said with some difficulty. Ugh, date.
"Yeah." She said bluntly, putting on two different shoes and then checking herself in the mirror in her closet.
I sighed taking a step closer to her, stuffing his hands deeper into my pockets until my keys were poking me, "Look Kimmy, I'm not here to talk you out of it. I know how stubborn you can be when your mind is already made up. And I realize that I was probably a jerk to you and not a great best friend. I'm sorry."
Oh my Lord that was the hardest thing I've ever had to do! Apologizing is not my strong suit, believe me when I say that. I don't apologize often because like many people I find it rather difficult to admit that I'm wrong. But like Kate pointed out, I was a jerk, and Kim is too good for me for her to deserve such behavior.
"I'm just going to just tell you the truth. I still don't want you going out with Spencer. I wish you could have been with me at practice and be there through my whole game but you weren't and you can't. I'm not trying to make this about me, and I'd be lying if I'd say I'm thrilled that you're going on this date, but I'm going to be happy for you because I know that's what you'd do for me, and this is what you want. I just don't want to lose you."
She looks up to me, rubbing her hands down her jeans with a sad look in her eyes. I didn't want her to leave upset for this date, but I needed her to know, and I needed to let it out. Now, all I need from her is to forgive me. That's all I want.
Kim's POV
To think right now, I'm making Asher feel the same way I felt when he first started flirting around with girls in 7th grade. I thought I was going to lose him to all those girls who we're prettier than me, funnier than me, more athletic than me; I thought it was the end of our friendship. The thought back then scared me too because Asher is my other half and we're just so close. Remembering the way I felt and the feeling that Asher was feeling, the same way I felt for years, hit me hard.
I'm not trying to make Asher jealous or replace him with Spencer, I'm not purposely going on this date to make him feel what I felt all those years back. It's not my intention, but Katie is right, he's scared that he's going to lose me or I'd forget about him, and there's no way that could happen.
"I'm sorry you feel that way Asher." I mumble, staring at the floor, "But I want you to know," I start to tell him, looking into his deep blue eyes that I've been envying for years, "You're going to be my best friend no matter what. You've been there for me when no one else was. You're not going to lose me Ash, just like how I didn't lose you when you started... going out with girls." I stated incorrectly, this term didn't seem as dirty as it really is. "Point is, yes, I'm going out on this date, but it doesn't mean that I'm not going to make room for you in my life. I need you." He grinned lightly, and I could tell as his shoulders slouched slightly that he felt a little better about the situation; more accepting.
"You will always be my best friend no matter what and I'm not leaving you, ever." I assured him looking at him straight in the eyes. I place both of my hands on either side of his face making sure he got the message and was taking me seriously. Asher is my pain in the ass most times, but I still love him. I wasn't going to leave him just because of a guy or a fight.
There's this silly quote from The Vow that I love, 'I stayed with him for all the things he did right and forgave him for the one thing he did wrong.' Well, I love Asher for all the things he does right, and I forgive him for all the things he does wrong because there are so many more things he does right than he does wrong. Replacing Asher is out of the question, not even an option.
"You don't hate me, do you?" Asher whispered in my ear when he grabs me for a hug.
I hugged him closer shaking my head on his shoulder. "No, of course not. I love you; you're the bestest friend a girl could ever have." I promise, loving the smell of his cologne or shaving cream, I don't know but something he uses smells good.
"Good, because I'm going to love you forever and ever and ever." He vows.
I smiled lightly, giggling, "I'll love you forever too Asher."
"KIM! KIMBERLY HE'S HERE, HE'S FUCKING HERE! Oh My God, I'm so sorry Mr. Taylor! I didn't mean to cuss, I swear!" She screamed and apologized to my dad who muttered to himself while walking up the stairs about teenagers and their language.
"Thank you for the apology." I tell him with a smile, "And if I can I'll try to make it to your game! I'll be the crazy, loud girl in the stands cheering for you." I said quickly as I gathered my stuff together and kissed him on his cheek. I grabbed my coat and smiled to Katie who was behind the door giving me a thumbs up. "Do I looked good?" I asked her.
"Perfect! Of course!" She replied with an eager nod.
"Ash?" I asked, smiling at him to be encouraging.
"Always stunning. Always," he said grinning.
The doorbell rang and I took a couple of seconds before opening it. Taking a huge breath I opened the door and my face dropped finding someone that wasn't Spencer. Hell I would have never guessed him standing at my front steps on a Friday evening.
"Tyler?" I questioned softly. Maybe he's drunk, maybe he got the wrong house, or maybe this is a horrible nightmare.
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" He asked anxiously but seriously. Yep, it's what I expected, he's highly delusional. When would he ever want to talk to me? I took a quick look behind the door finding a frighten Katie with her eyes bulging out of her sockets. Looking up the steps Asher froze giving me a questioning expression.
"Yeah sure." I said slowly slipping through a small crack to block the view for Asher. I closed the door behind me and shifted Tyler took a couple steps back moving uncomfortably.
"I'm just going to cut to the chase. Usually I don't do this but because your Ash's girl I might as well say it so he'll forgive me." Tyler started telling me bluntly which I'm thankful for.
I nodded my head starring at his cut above his brow. It clamped together between pieces of thread. Stitches! Darn, Asher got him good. Just like Asher, his lip was swelled a bit, and a bruise on his left cheek bone is starting to fade. At least no broken limbs, right?
My hand that rests on the door handle behind me slightly starts to move from under my hand. I grabbed the handle pulling the door fasten shut so the nosey people behind me wouldn't opened it. Can't a girl get a few minutes alone with her enemy since kindergarten?
"I'm.... Sorry." He said sourly almost sounding like a question. I cocked my head to the side just jokingly for him to go on. But he took me seriously and continued with his 'apology', "I'm sorry that I made you think that I took advantage of you Friday night and teased you about it. It was... Low. Even for me. And I apologize for anything else."
I hold the door handle tighter as either Katie or Asher still try pulling the door open. Tyler sees me struggling and gives me a puzzled look; I shake my head in response. "Thanks. I know that's probably hard for you to say since we both don't very much like each other."
"Yeah it is, you have no idea." He said, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. Well, what a sweet and quick apology.
"If you have anything else to ask or say I would make it quick. Asher is behind the door." I said quickly nodding behind me. He shrugged his shoulders not really caring, "Can we promise never to talk about that night again? Let's just put that night behind us like it never happened." I offered honestly not wanting that night to haunt me. I didn't want everyone to know about that, no one needed to know about that!
"Totally agree with you. So can we go back to hating each other now?" He asked smirking back.
I rolled my eyes, "The only reason I hate you is because you're a teasing, rude, asshole jerk." I explained to him crossing my arms over my chest.
"But I do it just to bug you, duh! How do you not know that by now?" He asked, pretending to looking shocked about it.
"You tease me just because you like seeing me worked up?! Oh then, I see how it is. You sickening bastard. I hate you so fucking much, honest to God." I try saying seriously holding back a laugh because somehow I'm finding this amusing.
He tries not to smile back as he slowly turns away nodding his head, "Why wouldn't I, you know how much fun and easy to is to get on your nerves?" He laughs, shaking his head as he puts his hands in his pockets. I shook my head unamused, "Just don't take it so seriously, just know what ever I say to you is all for fun and jokes." He assures me. He flips me off with a grin on his face. I just scowl, only to get laughed at.
"Uhh, should I come back another time?" A different voice speaks up. I turn to the voice of Spencer coming from behind Tyler. I giggled hiding my smile behind hand.
"No it's fine, Spencer, we're just clear something's out." I tell him mischievously.
"Hey man. What are you doing here?" Tyler asks Spencer. I narrow my eyes in confusion. Why the heck would Tyler even care? I don't need another Asher in my life to worry about who I'm dating.
"Here to pick up Kim. What are you doing here?" Spencer replies, pointing to me in the doorway. It's almost like they were having a secret conversation with they're eyes.
I purposely cough loudly to get their attention, "Uhh, should I come back another time?" I ask both of them pointing back and forth between them.
"No! We're good, ready Kim?" Spencer says to me.
"Sure let me get my bag... Ty get the fuck off my lawn before I call the cops." I smirked. Maybe it wouldn't be too bad to give Tyler his own medicine. If he wanted to be annoying I could sure as hell be twice as annoying as him.
"Come at me, bitch!" He state walking backward to his car. He flips me off once again as he drove way. I shake my head and let go of the door handle forgetting that I was holding it back. The door flew back hitting my friends in the face. They shout and cuss. I squint my eyes hearing their protests of pain.
"Sorry." I mumbled turning slightly to see them both behind the door holding their noses and faces.
"Damn hell, Kim you gave me a bloody nose!" Katie complains running to the bathroom.
"Sorry!" I shouted to her, "I'll see you later." I tell Asher. He kisses my cheek before I leave, which doesn't help the blush rising to my cheeks hoping Spencer didn't see that.
Asher smiles, patting my back as I turn away from him, "Have fun." He shouts out the door as I walk with Spencer to his car. Waving him goodbye I smile. I'm happy that Ash and I sorted our feelings out. I hate not speaking to Asher, I do love him and he's my best friend.
"Ready?" Spencer asks breaking me out of my thoughts.
"Ready!" I said excitedly, "So where are you taking me?"
He chuckled winking over to me, "How good are you at driving?"
