Chapter 5- Party
Best Friends with the Player
Chapter 5- Party
School is over, parents are working late, Nick is sleeping over at a friendâs house, and Asher won his game 23- 6; everything is going along perfectly. Perfect for me to go out and enjoy the party. I wanted to be stunning for this party. I wanted everyone to turn their heads to me and gawk on my every step. I deserved to be shallow for one night, right? People are going to be shocked seeing Kimberly Taylor, dressed up, walking and mingling at a high school party.
I left my bathroom to put on my dress at the last minute. Shower done, make up still going, hair still in curlers, thirty minutes left. I was putting on the rest of my mascara and eyeliner when the doorbell rang and the front door clicked open.
Of course Asher would let himself in, I thought, giggling to myself.
"Kimmy!" Asher boomed, running up the stairs. I heard his feet stomping up the stairs and his presence entering my room. "You ready?" he breathed heavily.
"Almost done. Youâre looking snazzy," I commented, eyeing him up and down. He was wearing a white button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and khaki pants. I guess that's what guys wear to parties. Why do guys have to be so simple in life when girl actually have to try?
"Thanks. I would say the same to you but youâre in a robe and slippers...so," he smirked, balancing his hands out like it was a decision he was going to have to make later.
I laughed, âI know, I know." Giggling, I took the curlers out of my hair, and cleaned up my makeup mess, clearing off the counter and putting things back where they belonged. I went to my closet changing into my dress that hung perfectly in plain view showing off its beauty.
âSo youâre still going to wear that thing, huh?â Asher mutters, sitting on the corner of my bed as he waited.
âOf course, I bought it for tonight.â I remind him as I slip it on. I look in the mirror, holding some pins between my lips as I pin all my curly hair on one side, slipping on a pair of black heels. I can look stylish went I want. Iâm not all jeans and sweatpants all the time. I looked at myself in the mirror one more time, spinning around 360. My shaded pink lips stretched into a wide smile. Stunning and shinning like the North Star! If I do say so myself.
I grab the matching black clutch that held my phone, driverâs license, money and house keys, and walk out of the closet. I look over at Asher sitting on the edge of my bed staring at me with his mouth hung open. Iâm totally satisfied now; if I can get that look from my best friend, imagine the looks I would get from everyone else!
I hope Spencer will be there! Then he would surely be able to see how pretty I really am for him and fall in love with me! Maybe this will be the night that we'll finally be together! If not, damn Iâm screwed. But I wouldnât be there for nothing; I was planning on having fun. Iâm planning on trying to have a good time and enjoy myself.
"You look- Damn- No I meant...um Nice. You look nice, Kimmy," he stuttered, clearing his throat.
"Thanks,â I reply with a genuine smile, âReady to go?" I said taking him out of his thoughts and leaving my room.
"Yeah, yep. Leaving.... Now," he said, sounding nervous. I giggled at his sudden embarrassment or the unsteady feeling for being near me. I don't know what the problem is with me in this dress. Iâm covered more in this dress than I was in a bikini!
He's never given me these looks before when I was in a bikini. Why was he giving me these looks now? Heâs looking at me differentlyâ¦.likeâ¦. I shook my head- Nonsense Kimberly! He's your best friend! Of course not, youâre not like the other girls he dates! The word date is even the wrong word, because he doesnât actually date.
He placed his hand on my lower back, directing me to his car. I do have to admit, it was a stupid idea to wear this dress since it was almost below freezing out. It was the end of October in New England and surprisingly, there wasn't any snow- so far. It was stupid of me to be walking out "half naked" as Asher pointed out and not bothering to remember to get a sweater or jacket.
Getting into Asher's car, I tried warming up my arms and quickly put on the heat. Once Asher came in the car, I heard him chuckle lightly, smirking widely. "What?" I snapped. Of course he was going to rub it all in and tell me 'I told you so' and crap. Asher loved to be told he was right.
"You know what," he chuckled darkly. "Hey isn't this weather so nice?"
âBeautiful.â I dead planted, sitting on my hands to keep warm.
âItâs perfect pants and shirt weather. The fall is beautiful-â
"Alright, Asher, I get it. I'm not giving in though." As we stopped at a red light, he smirked over to me, putting his hand on the knob for the heat.
"So then, you don't mind if I turn off the heat? It's getting a bit too warm.â I pressed my lips in a straight line looking over to the light. Green. I looked over to him as he didn't give much notice to the change.
"Go," I ordered.
"Alright shutting it off the-"
âNo, go. Green," I yelled putting my hand on his thigh, pushing on the gas.
Cars honked their horns just when I made the car move. The car jolted in forward motion and then finally went back to a steady speed. I let out the huge breath I carried, leaning my head back against the seat.
âKimmy wants to get in my pants, huh?" Asher snickered. I gave him a stupid look as he looked down at my hand still clutching into his thigh, my finger nails digging into the fabric of his pants. I quickly retracted my hand, feeling my face burn up with embarrassment.
I look away, staring out the window. The sudden heat from the car kicked in making my feet un-numb. The car filled with an awkward silence and the soft tone of music played in the background. Ten minutes later, still in silence, Asher pulled up to a grand split house. All around the house was glass, big tall glass windows that wrapped all around the house. The rest of the house was made of dark and light colored stone. Inside, you could see lights streaming out the windows, looking through the windows, people dancing and drinking, the sound of the booming music echoing onto the streets. The house is alive and full of energy.
"Ready?" Asher asked interrupting my thoughts.
"Party on,â I smiled stepping out of the car. Hooking my arm through Asher's, we stepped into the house.
Asher's POV
Have you ever been in love with someone that left you speechless every time you saw them? Every time they pass by you, touch you, sending an electric jolt up your body. The warm, gentle, happy feeling you have when youâre with her. That you would do anything to keep her safe, to make sure that nothing would ever hurt her. That's how I felt about Kimmy.
I know she's my best friend ever since Kindergarten, but over time, I've just kept falling for her harder and harder. And it's not like I can control it! Somethingâs you cannot just control. Some of the things she says or does make me fall in love with her even more. Don't get me started on the things she wears! God that dress, the dress looked perfect on her, really sexy, but I couldn't say that! That would ruin our friendship for sure. Iâm sure she doesnât feel the same way about me. Even in sweatpants she turns me on! Didnât know that was possible. Kim went from geek with braces, glasses and pony tail 24/7, to girl that wears make, no braces, and contacts. I guess what people say are true. You first got to go through the ugly to get to the pretty.
Iâve known Kimmy for eleven years and what I didnât know was how sheâd be at this party. I guess, leaving her in the hands of some friends, wasnât the smartest thing. Kimmy is drunk. For the first time in the biggest social high school party sheâs attend she got drunk. No, this isnât Kimmyâs first time being drunk. Sheâs been drunk twice in her life. Once, during Christmas with only a few friends in Zacâs basement. Second time so happens to be right now. Â You know what drove me even more insane? Sheâs flirting with every guy who talks to her. Every guy but me!
I know, shocker; Kimmy getting drunk right. It rarely ever happens and sometimes, later, she doesnât even know what sheâs done! Sheâll have one drink and say sheâll only have one drink, then someone will bring her another, and then another, and before you know it sheâs tipsy. Â I hate it, it drives me insane! How would you feel if you saw the love of your life hit on other guys, that were A. drunk, and B. your best buds?
Like right now, staring at her in the living room of Dylan's house flirting with the team captain of the soccer team, Josh. Iâm pretty sure she doesnât know Josh that well, but Iâm pretty sure they both are a little tipsy into remembering a name to a face. I thought she was into that Spencer guy that walked her to class the other day. Man oh man, does that Spencer dude piss me off. The way he looks at her and makes her laugh, it makes me want to punch him in the face.
I know stuff about Spencer that no one knows about. So I have my reasons not to like him. Heâs a decent guy, I guess, but if he has any interest with Kimmy then I hate him. Spencer can be a good guy from what I heard from other people. But I knew more to him that met the eye. A lot of people donât know it, but Iâm one of the very few people that know Spencer that well.
"Hello, Knight. Yo, man, done staring yet?" Dyl shouted, waving his hand over my face.
"Yeah, I'm cool man," I said taking my eyes away from Kimmy.
Dylan chuckled shaking his head at me. "Dude, when are you just going to go for her already?!"
"Go for whom?" I said smoothly, taking a sip of my beer. Still on my first beer I swear.
"Kim, obviously. You keep staring at her; you never let her out of your sight, youâre together 24/7-"
"Roberts, we're best friends it's not like that-"
"Bullshit, Knight. I see the way you stare at her. Must kill you right now to see her with Josh." I clenched my jaw, grinding my teeth. Was I really that obvious? Did I look like some love struck puppy when I was around her?
He bellowed laughed, clapping me on the back. "Dude, don't kill yourself over this. Just tell her. I bet she would feel the same way." He tells me, then shrugs his shoulders and says, âWhat girl wouldnât want to be with you?â
"She thinks I'm the best player sheâs ever seen, and when she doesn't, she looks at me as her best friend. What am I supposed to do about that?" I asked, shaking my head. Kimmy doesnât look at me like I look at her.
"Women like being desired. Just throw her up against a wall and start kissing her. Chances are, she'll kiss you back, and if she doesn't, at least you tried. You've got to do something or else you'll lose her," he preached.
I looked at him puzzled, giving him a narrow look. "That line is from a movie isn't it?"
"Psh, no! Why would you say that?" he said laughing and shaking his head, covering up his lie as he drinks his can.
"Roberts, it's from the movie The Art of Getting By. Kimmy made me watch that movie with her like twenty-three times." Itâs not even a good movie to be honest. The commercials are better than the movie.
"See what I mean! You know her like you know yourself. I'm telling you man, just go for it." Roberts insists, punching me playfully on the shoulder. I grinned, shaking my head. There was no way I was going to humiliate myself in front of Kim.
Taking my mind off that, a new face that I haven't seen in school before walked by and I was intrigued. Her long dark, black hair moved swiftly back and forth, her sunset flowery dress fit her exotic personality, and she has a very nice tan that Iâm sure every girl would be jealous of.
"Hey, Gorgeous, where you heading off to? Need my help?" I shouted to her, smiling my wide glowing smile that made girls speechless. She giggled, winking at me and walking over to the cooler that served beer. I walked over, picking up a beer and popping it open for her.
"Thank you," she said in a beautiful exotic accent.
"Your accent... Where are you from?" I asked with a curious smile.
"Brazil. I'm the new exchange student." I looked at her with wide eyes and smiles. I took a step closer to her, making her giggle and blush.
"And how new are you to Jefferson High?" I whispered in her ear.
"Long enough to know that you are Jefferson's number one player. From what Iâve been told," she said with the roll of her tongue. From her unsteady gaze, I could tell this wasnât her first beer either.
I raised my eyes at her, surprised. No way has she been here that long that I haven't noticed her. I would have made out with her in the first day without even trying! Oh yeah I'm just that good and sexy looking. The only reason I had this whole bad boy, player act even started was because I heard that girls get jealous if you date other girls. So in my mind, I thought that if I started dating and making out with girls and Kimmy finding it all out, I thought she would get jealous and from there it would be easy to see her feelings for me. I mean it sounds easy, right? Kiss a few girls a day, pleasure them, flirt and being charming. Thatâs so easy for me.
You can tell my plan hasn't worked out too well yet...
"Then, baby, won't you come play with me," I said seductively.
*****
I would have to say a good hour later, I was coming out of the bathroom, leaving my hot Brazilian date behind to finish getting dressed. I wasn't drunk, but she was. I couldn't afford to get drunk, not unless I wanted to bring home Kimmy and myself in broken pieces.
Grabbing a coke from a cooler, I walked over to my boys who were huddled around the island. When I got closer, I realized they were all taking shots. Well, actually, Zac and Dyl were having shot races as everyone chanted, cheered, and watched.
I peaked over to the living room to see if Kimmy was still there, but with my unfortunate luck she was not. Where could she be? She was hanging around with Josh earlier, maybe if I find Josh Iâll find Kimmy. Curiosity got the best of me and I went over to confront Josh and ask him where Kimmy was. But that was a total waste of time when he just slurred on and on-drunk- about how many girls he kissed that night.
"So you don't know where Kimmy is?" I asked clearly one more time.
He growled, pushing past me, "No I don't. Now stop being such a buzz kill and let us enjoy the party, WHOA!" he screamed lifting his hands in the air.
I returned to my boys just in time as Dylan and Zac finished their race. "Hey Roberts, have you seem Kim around anywhere?" I asked with a serious looking face.
"Um nope, sorry, can't say I have." He replied laughing. âSheâs, like, right. Overâ¦. Here. Sheâs here.â He chuckles pointing to places around the island where Kim clear wasnât around. I think heâs had one to many to drink.
âShe was around here? Was she look for me?â I ask, trying to figure out what he was saying. He nods his head chuckling, leaning against Zac for support.
"Oh! Please tell me somebody took a picture of Ty's hot, drunk, sexy, date!" Luke shouted to us, walking over. We all shook our head besides a drunken Zac who nodded his head frantically that I thought it was going to swing right off him.
âHow drunk is Ty?â I asked narrowing my eyes at my friends. Last I saw Tyler he was downing a bottle of beer.
âDrunk!â A few of them said at the same time.
"What a dog," Roberts laughed in disbelief.
"Who is she?" I asked curiously. They both shook their heads not knowing the girls name. Well it surly isn't Kimmy, I know that 110%. They hate each otherâs guts! "I'm going to go look for Kimmy and then head out. I'll see you guys later." I tell them. I turn back around pointing a finger at them, âDonât drive, and youâre all cut off.â I tell them with a serious look. They all roll their eyes chuckling at me.
When I said my final goodbye they all whined, convincing me to stay and have another drink. But I couldn't bear the thought of not knowing where Kimmy is. I check every room of the house looking for her, and not once do I spot her. That's when I started asking some people she was with earlier, until one guy said he saw her walking out with a group of people, and that she was falling over and flirting with some guy.
Oh Jesus Christ Kimmy! What the hell are you doing?
